Reality vs. Myth: Living in a Nursing Home

In the past decade, nursing homes, like all areas of healthcare
have changed radically in terms of staffing, policy and procedure
and types of care given. Nursing home professionals’ goals are to
provide both quality of care and quality of life to residents. Many
people fear the move from their own home to the nursing home
and do not know what to expect in the nursing home. Nursing
home professionals understand these concerns, and want residents
and their families to know the difference between myths and real-
istic expectations of life in a nursing home.
Myth #1: A nursing home is like a hospital. Reality: A nursing
home is not a hospital. Many people, after a recent hospitalization,
think of the nursing home as an extension of hospital care. They
expect the same kind of intensive care they received in the hospital.
A nursing home is different. Think of it as a home with nursing
care available as needed, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Myth #2: All nursing home residents are confused. Reality:
Most people slow down physically as they age. For some this is
also true of their mental processes. Many people enter a nursing
home because they are considered too forgetful to manage their
own care. Often, however, this condition can be reversed with ade-
quate nutrition, exercise, social stimulation, and properly controlled
medication. It is realistic to expect a full range of capabilities and
personalities among residents in nursing homes. Some will have
completely lucid minds in fragile handicapped bodies. Others will
have healthy bodies but minds that are no longer functioning nor-
mally. Most will fall somewhere between the two extremes.
Myth #3: There is no privacy in a nursing home. Reality: Be-
cause so many nursing home residents need constant supervision,
nursing homes are designed so that staff can be aware of resident’s
whereabouts at all times. However, each resident has the right
to privacy. Staff, family members, and visitors are encouraged
to observe the common courtesy of knocking before entering a
resident’s room. The nursing staff, both professionals and nursing
assistants, are trained to respect the individual resident’s modesty
and prevent unnecessary exposure when providing personal care.
Family members should expect privacy and remind staff of its im-
portance if they seem to become careless in this area.
Myth #4: If I enter a nursing home, I will never go home. Re-
ality: The primary goal of the nursing home is to rehabilitate the
resident so he or she can return to the community. In fact, 30%
of all residents are discharged to home-like living arrangements.
Those who cannot return permanently make short visits, health
permitting. Physicians, families and staff should truthfully answer
the resident’s questions about the possibility of going home.

Arlington Christian School to hold Football
Benefit Extravaganza
Arlington Christian School’s will hold its first football benefit
extravaganza and silent auction March 25th. This event is open
to the public and will take place at the Downtown Douglasville
Conference Center catered by Atlanta’s Finest.
ACS will be introducing their new head football coach, former
UGA Hall of Fame and NFL standout, Robert Edwards. Robert
Edwards along with his Hall of Fame friends, Hines Ward, Takeo
Spikes and Terrence Edwards will be the featured speakers at the
event.
In addition to the presentation by the featured speakers and a
wonderful seated steak or chicken catered dinner there will also be
a silent auction which will feature autographed sports memorabilia
from the speakers and other items.
A reception with hors d’oeuvres and silent auction will begin at
6:45pm followed by a seated dinner at 7:30pm. General admission
tickets are available to purchase starting at $100 each. They also
have reserved priority seating and sponsorship tables available.

Panama Tan celebrates 15 year anniversary
On March 11th, Panama Tan and Spa will reach a major mile-
stone, as they celebrate their 15 year anniversary. Mother and
daughter team Brenda and Brandy Bell opened the store in 1995
in the Ingles’ shopping center on Highway 61 in Villa Rica, with five
tanning beds, and the business is still in the same spot. However, it
has grown now to 22 beds, since about six years ago the salon and
spa doubled the size of their space.
The salon has become very popular over the years, and has
always had a very strong desire to provide the best in service and
equipment to the people of Villa Rica. They have been voted one
of the top 250 salons in the US for five years in a row. In addition
to tanning, they also offer a Body Wrap which allows patrons to
instantly lose inches. Near the end of last year, Brandy graduated
from Elite Institute of Aesthetics, and the salon began adding ad-
ditional spa services such as facials, chemical peels, waxing, brow

Curves of Villa Rica Hosts Food Drive to Benefit
Local Families
Curves of Villa Rica is encouraging women in the area to show
their philanthropic strength by participating in the annual Curves
Food Drive. And, even though donating food to families in need is
its own reward, the club is offering compelling incentives for both
existing and potential members who participate.
From March 1 to 31, Curves of Villa Rica will collect non-per-
ishable items and monetary donations for food banks in the local
area. According to Fuller, members who donate a bag of gro-
ceries or make a minimum donation of $30 during the month of
March will receive a reusable Curves grocery freezer bag for free.
Non-members who do likewise between March 8 and 20 can join
Curves for free. Curves will waive the cost to join.
Fuller says that as part of this effort, Curves of Villa Rica will be
participating in a company-wide contest for the most food drive
donations collected by Curves locations across the nation.

two events
“A New Day” Sunrise Service will be held at the new amphithe-
ater in historic downtown Sunday, April 4, from 6:45am to 9:00am

Harvester Christian Academy’s 7th Annual Gala and
Auction to be held March 19
Harvester Christian Academy will hold its 7th Annual Gala and
Auction March 19th, 2010. This event is
open to the public and will be held at Central
Baptist Church on Central Church Road. For-
mer University of Georgia and NFL football
players, David Pollack and David Greene are
the featured speakers. Pollack, a first round
draft pick for the Cincinnati Bengals and
three time All American teams up with Da-
vid Greene, who retired as quarterback with
the most wins in Division 1 football at that
time. In addition to the presentation by the
featured speakers, a silent and live auction
featuring fabulous items will be held.
Auction donations include but are not lim-
ited to: Georgia sports tickets, autographed
sports memorabilia, vacation homes and
condos, restaurant and entertainment certifi-
cates, home décor, hair and spa certificates,
sporting goods, sporting tickets and more.
The Auction and Gala is sponsored by a large number of area
businesses and individuals.
Valet parking begins in conjunction with the opening of the si-
lent auction at 6:00pm. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be followed by
a seated dinner served at 7:00pm. General admission tickets are
now available and are $85.00 each until March 11th when the

Golden City Lions club to hold benefit fashion show
Ladies of all ages are invited to the second annual fashion show to be
hosted by the Villa Rica Golden City Lions Club. The show will take place

taurant in downtown Villa Rica. Exciting spring fashions and accessories
will be shown in a tea room setting while guests enjoy an afternoon buffet

Marvelous Master Bedrooms

Much more than just the place you sleep, today’s
master bedroom should function as a truly personal in-home retreat.
The private nature of this room invites the indulgence of sumptuous
fabrics, heirlooms and collectibles or an exquisite oriental rug, which
might be in jeopardy in other areas of the home.
Filling its role as the room’s focal point, the bed may be dra-
matically sleek or elaborately festooned. Either way it should make a
strong statement in the room’s interior while imparting an ambience
of luxury and leisure to the homeowners. Nothing says custom gran-
deur more than exquisite bed coverings with lavish accent pillows.
And contrary to what every ‘bed-in-a-bag retailer’ would have us
believe, beds with varying frames, box springs, and mattresses are

Canopy beds with side curtains were originally designed to deflect
chilly drafts in the days before homes were well insulated. Luckily,
we’re now left with the legacy of this exquisite and intimate bed
treatment. The lack of a real canopy bed is not a deterrent since the
bed curtains can be hung from the ceiling, from a carved corona, or
from ceiling mounted drapery rods. Even a small bedroom can enjoy
this romantic treatment by draping only the head of the bed.
Possibly more than in any other area of the home, the bedroom
needs window treatments to be both beautiful and functional. Pro-
viding there is a nice view, the window treatments should be designed
to completely clear the windows when opened. Styles, fabrics, trim,
hardware, and fabrication techniques can vary tremendously to sat-
isfy both function and beauty.
A small love seat or chaise positioned at the foot of the bed can
serve a dual role as a comfy nest for reading and as a rest for folding
back the bed cover at night. If space is at a premium, try two easy
chairs facing each other with an ottoman between.
A beautiful armoire can serve to encase the master bedroom tele-
vision and will need to be carefully situated if the bed is draped and
canopied so that the side drapery doesn’t interfere with viewing. Ide-
ally, the television will be equipped with remote headphones so that
the viewer will not disturb the person reading or sleeping. Today the
TV can be hidden behind a two-way mirror in a deep frame or placed
in a cabinet with a lift system to bring it up only when needed.
Side tables for the bed, once called night stands, are growing
even larger to provide storage and table top space for the acces-
sories of this user-friendly ‘nest’. The two bedside tables needn’t
be identical, but should reflect the personal needs of the individual
sleeper. In fact, current styles don’t call for the traditional ‘bedroom
set’ at all, but invite creativity and better functionality with individual
pieces that work well together.
Deep, rich wall colors create a sense of tranquility as well as a
hint of drama in a bedroom. Rugs, draperies, tapestries, upholstered
walls, furniture, and plants all can act as important sound absorbing
elements to provide an intimate setting or solitude. The wall color
should complement the other colors in the room. Ceilings can be
painted to create interest or a sense of extra height. Be sure to add
a little sparkle in the room. A large, custom framed floor-length mir-
ror can add interest as well as serve for dressing purposes. Lighting
must also be carefully selected. Lamps with fairly heavy shades and
three way switches allow for reading and task lighting while offering
a low setting to soften the mood. A jewelry chest is an added and
functional treat.
A wonderful master bedroom, even with minimal extra square
footage, should be used as an integral part of your living space.
Make it personal, cozy, functional, and private and you’ll find your-
self retreating there more often than ever before.

Ah, March! Time will tell if this month will come in like a lion or
a lamb - we will soon see. One thing I do know is that even though
you may still think we are experiencing brutal winter temperatures,
now is the time to get out in the garden and get started for one of
our best years yet.
What needs to be done in March? It is important to finish up your
tree and shrub planting this month. You may think it best to wait for
April and May, but realistically the earlier you can plant, the better
it will be for your plants. Planting trees and shrubs while dormant
allows them ample time to acclimate to their new surroundings be-
fore the brutal heat of summer sets in. This tip goes for transplant-
ing too. March is also a great time to plant pansies and violas if
you did not get a chance to get them in the ground last fall. It will
brighten up your beds and they will last for a few months until it is
time to plant summer color. While you’re out planting annuals get
some herbs, like parsley, started in your herb bed. Lastly, start your
seeds for plants that will be installed after the last frost date.
Don’t think you are off the hook, in the garden, if you don’t have
any new plants to install, March is also a great time to finish win-
ter pruning tasks on the plants you already have growing as many
shrubs will begin to leaf out as the temperatures warm this month.
If you want to make any drastic changes to your shrubbery, March is
a good time as you will not have to live with bare sticks for very long.
Many shrubs respond well to renovative pruning, especially holly,
nandina, and aucuba. Wait until after flowering to prune shrubs
that bloom in spring, these include azaleas and camellias. As far
as fertilization goes, only evergreens and summer flowering shrubs
and trees should be fertilized in March, wait until after flowering to
fertilize spring blooming plants.
Lastly, depending on your lawn type, you should have had fertil-
izer and/or pre-emergent herbicide applied to your lawn by March.
If you have a cool season lawn, however, now is the time to fix any
patchy areas with a light top dressing of seed and compost. You
will also want to do a once over on your lawn mowing equipment.
Sharp blades and well working equipment are a must for a good
quality cut.

Seven Strategies for Saving

Are you doing your best to save for your future? It
can be very challenging to begin a savings program.
After necessities such as food, clothing and housing,
there can be little left to put aside for future goals.
Unfortunately, failing to save could mean the difference be-
tween enjoying a comfortable retirement and giving up some basic
needs. Often it is a matter of making the decision to begin saving
now in order to buy a new home or car later. The goals you set are
important to you. Making changes to prepare for those goals can
make a difference.
For that reason, we’ve come up with seven strategies that you
can use today.
1. Don’t splurge with your tax refund. Instead of spending your
refund, use it wisely by paying down debt, funding an individual
retirement account, or saving it for future financial goals.
2. Take full advantage of your employer’s retirement contribu-
tions. Your employer may match a percentage of the contributions
you make to your retirement savings plan. It’s a good idea to do
what it takes to get the matching limit. It’s free money that can re-
ally help your bottom line during retirement.
3. Start small and stay steady. The first word is the most impor-
tant – start. You should begin as early as possible to get the most
out of your savings plan.
4. Pay yourself first. Think of your savings or investments as
a bill you must pay on a regular basis, much the same as a car
or mortgage payment. Be disciplined and make the the payments
according to a set schedule. For better results, establish an auto-
matic monthly deduction from your paycheck or checking account
to fund an investment or savings account.
5. Create separate pots of savings for upcoming life stages.
Retirement may be an important goal for which to begin saving,
but other goals or events need as much or more preparation. Don’t
short-change other goals while concentrating on one thing. Wheth-
er it’s a home, car or child’s education, it is important to give ap-
propriate attention to each.
6. If you have children, find the right education plan. You have
a number of choices when it comes to saving for a child’s edu-
cation. Finding the one that makes sense for your situation takes
planning and information. This takes us to the seventh and, quite
possibly, the most important point…
7. Work with someone you know and trust. Everyone’s needs
and goals are unique. Just as you go through many changes dur-
ing your lifetime, your financial goals may change. You should work
with a professional who not only knows about various plans and
strategies, but knows you and will stay with you through the long
haul. Most people feel the best guidance they receive comes from
a financial professional they know and trust.
In the end, it all boils down to making a plan, getting started
and staying the course. When you make the decision to finally start,
