For Immediate Release Contact: City Manager’s Office POLICE DEPARTMENT – RETIREMENT AND APPOINTMENTS

Police Lieutenant Richard C. Wood will retire from the City of Watertown on March 25, 2013. He served the citizens of Watertown for over 22 years, having also mentored many Police Officers as they have moved through the ranks of the Watertown Police Department. He served as a Community Policing Officer for 5 years. Lieutenant Wood received the Officer of the Year Award in 2001 and the Meritorious Service Award in 1994 for a structure fire on State Street. In addition, he received the Life Saving Award in 2006 for rescuing teenagers from the Black River behind Jefferson Community College. With the retirement of Police Lieutenant, City Manager Sharon Addison, along with Police Chief Gary R. Comins, is pleased to announce that Michael J. LaBarge will be promoted to the position of Lieutenant effective March 25, 2013. Lieutenant LaBarge began his career with the City of Watertown on June 22, 1998 as Police Officer. He has strong leadership skills and is certified in many areas, including crisis negotiation and served as an Instructor for the Police Academy. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2008 and also served as an Administrative Sergeant. He received an Honorable Service Award for responding to an armed robbery and carjacking standoff and the Life Saving Award for a structure fire on Coffeen Street.

In addition, Jason J. Badalato will be promoted to the position of Sergeant effective March 25, 2013. Sergeant Badalato began his career with the City of Watertown on July 31, 2000 as a Police Officer. He has excellent negotiation skills and integrity, being certified in crisis negotiation. Sergeant Badalato served as the Field Training Officer in 2004 and became the DARE/Juvenile Aid Officer in 2007. He received the Officer of the Year Award in 2009.
