President

It is my pleasure to welcome Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro of the Department of
Education, distinguished guests, the University faculty and staff, family and friends and of
course, the Class of 2015 to our 107th Commencement Exercises.
Ladies and Gentlemen, good afternoon.
It may not be clear to some of us here, but the role of educators is huge in this country’s
development. You hone and mold future leaders. You are the king/queen-makers.
In this year’s theme, Futures of Education and Innovations in Teacher Education, it is
important to emphasize that even against the backdrop of technological advancement, some
tenets of teacher education should be kept intact – honor and empathy.
First, teaching education should continue and reaffirm the importance of honor in the
profession. It should remain as an inviolable tenet in the profession, for our educators are the
fountains where the future of this country springs from. There should be no compromise on
values.
Second, education is a social activity. More than just fostering the culture of excellence,
it is the duty of the educator to empathize with the plight of the students. Mastering this skill is
important in motivating teachers and students. It makes them feel less alone.

In the advent of advanced technology, it is easy to forget things that matter the most. We
are always tempted to make shortcuts and find the easiest way out of our problems.
Technology, though a force of good, also limits personal interaction. It is for this reason that I
emphasize on these two key principles of an excellent educator – honor first before excellence
and empathy.
As you close the doors of being college students, open the doors to be the students of
the world. Armed with principles, educate with passion.
Today, we celebrate new beginnings. This is the start of your journey and vocation to
educate and impart all things that you have learned here with other people. The university is
very proud of you. We are confident that you are imbibed with the proper skills and values that
reflect the principles upheld by the university. As a fellow educator, it is my great honor and
pride to refer to you now as my colleagues.
Colleagues, as you search your way in your career, please do consider serving the
country.
Serve the Filipino People.

Thank you!
