BY TONY EVERS
STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC
INSTRUCTION
The new school year holds so much
promise. There is excitement unleashed
when school doors open and our teach-
ers, principals, and staff welcome our stu-
dents and parents. This year, the efforts
we’ve been working on take root. We
have new and more rigorous expecta-
tions for students in math and English lan-
guage arts that are based on Wisconsin’s
world-class academic standards. Our stu-
dents will take new assessments, aligned
to those standards and piloted last year,
that will provide better information on
their achievement and areas that can be
improved. And, our educator effective-
ness system will be utilized statewide to
provide teachers and principals with
feedback on their work that will help
them be better educators.
Change takes time to gain hold. We
adopted the math and English language
arts standards in 2010 and Wisconsin
became part of a consortium working on
new assessments shortly after that. By col-
laborating with teachers, principals, and
superintendents, we developed an evalu-
ation system that honors the work educa-
tors do with students inside the classroom,
with each other, and in the community to
move education forward. These are wor-
thy efforts, grounded in common sense
strategies that work because the singular
focus is to improve achievement for all
students. All of this supports our efforts to
make every classroom a center for learn-
ing and enjoyment.
Wisconsin has a strong educational
system. We continue to have some of the
nation’s highest graduation rates and col-
lege admission test scores. This is thanks
to the work of our students with support
from the parents, teachers, school admin-
istrators, and other school staff, as well as
their local communities. Yet, serious
action is still needed for our students.
Along with our top performance,
Wisconsin has some of the worst achieve-
ment gaps in the nation. This we must
change. A group of talented educators is
working on strategies and resources that
will help us reverse the achievement gap.
We will see results from their work in the
coming months.
It takes hard work sustained over time
by educators and communities to fulfill
our vision of a better education and
future for our kids. There’s no overnight
transformation. Together, we can ensure
every student returns to a classroom
where the joy of learning is valued and
experienced.

WE WI LL BEAT
ANY ESTI MATED
PRI CE! ! !
Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, I have a slight under-bite,
otherwise, my teeth are actually quite straight.
I had braces on my top teeth at a young age
and as I grew up my under-bite worsened. This
under-bite has resulted in some unnatural wear
and chipping on a couple of my top teeth. Do
you have any non-surgery solutions available?
Dear Ted, there are many options for fixing
underbites that are non-surgical but I cannot
comment on your options until I have
completed an examination and x-ray visit.
Sometimes orthodontics can correct your
problem other times crowns can be used to
change your bite. So surgery is always the last
option considered. It is important to
remember that once significant wear and
chipping has occurred, the teeth that caused
this chipping also need to be corrected to
recover the space that was lost from these teeth
erupting in to the chipped areas.
Dear Dr. Winter, I had a tooth break at the
gumline. I really don’t want a bridge as I have
heard they have to shave down the other teeth
and those teeth will be weakened. I am also
concerned that I might need bone grafting to
have an implant. What is your opinion about
placing implants the same day the tooth comes
out? Can this help me avoid a bone graft?
Dear John, the ability to place an implant the
day the tooth is removed is dependent on
several factors. First the remaining bone
should be intact and thicker than 1.5 mm so
that there is good blood supply to fill in the
gap between the implant and the remaining
tooth socket. Next there should be good
stabilization of the implant and if it can not be
placed with good insertion torque, it may be
better to graft the socket and come back in 3
months to place the implant after bone fill has
occurred. The literature supports both means
of placing implants but it is still dependent
upon clinician skill, bone quality and quantity
and cosmetic expectations of the patient.
We would be happy to perform a second
opinion or comprehensive examination and
x-ray visit for our readers! Please call us at
414-464-9021 to schedule your visit. We
invite you to visit our new website at
www.hamptondentalassociates.com For
photos and videos of our dentistry and
information about implants and cosmetics.
We look forward to meeting you!

BY MELINDA MYERS
GARDENING EXPERT, TV/RADIO HOST AND AUTHOR
What a growing season it’s been! If you
enjoy digging in the dirt as much I do, you know
how long it’s taken to get your garden and land-
scape looking right. Since we’re well into the
growing season, I’d like to share what you can
do to revitalize your garden, along with a few
planting ideas that work well in this region and
will shape the look of your landscape into the
fall, and seasons to come.
If you’re thinking about adding new plant-
ings or moving existing plants, start by making a
plan. Know what type of soil you have, and keep
in mind that some plants prefer sandy, fast-drain-
ing soil and do not tolerate heavy, poorly
drained soil. Other plants are more adaptable
and are less particular about their growing con-
ditions including how much sun they get.
Visualize the colors you’d like to see in your
landscape as the summer progresses and keep
in mind that different plants flower at different
times. Draw a sketch of what your landscape
looks like now, including flowers and their colors,
and draw another sketch of how you would like
it to look. For example – what colors would you
like to see by this fall?
As for proper plant selection – it’s simple:
choose the right plant for the right location! A
good way to start is to select plants that are
native to the region. These plants will thrive more
readily than exotics. If you’d rather spare the
expense of buying plants again next year, go for
the perennials, which will come up again in the
years to come. Native, low-growing plants also
require less pruning. The planting guide at
www.atc-GrowSmart.com is a good resource for
helping you select these types of plants. The
guide includes native grasses and flowers that
are ideal, whether you’re planting them under
an electric transmission line or the garden out-
side your back door. Print this guide and take it
to your local garden center or nursery, along
with your sketched plan.
Once you’ve purchased the plants you’d
like, you’ll need to add mulch. Your local garden
center or nursery can advise you on the proper
amount and type you’ll need, based on your
plan. Mulch the soil with shredded leaves, ever-
green needles, woodchips or other organic mat-
ter to conserve moisture. Mulching also keeps
roots cool, suppresses weeds and improves the
soil as the mulch decomposes. Wait to fertil-
ize…late-season fertilization can stimulate late-
season growth that is less winter-hardy. Next
spring, if you need to fertilize, use low-nitrogen,
slow-release fertilizer that won’t burn plants,
even in a drought. Plus, they promote slow,
steady growth that is less susceptible to pests
and needs less water.
And finally, keep in mind that there are
water-wise approaches to gardening. These
strategies will help minimize the amount of water
that your plants need, and how much you will
actually use. Where possible, install rain barrels
to capture the rain from your roof or directly from
the sky. Apply water directly to the soil using
soaker hoses and drip irrigation. Remember to
water thoroughly and less frequently to encour-
age deep, drought-tolerant roots. And always
water early in the morning, when possible, to
reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation.
Best of luck, and happy growing!

Colorful kites, including a new mega-
octopus kite 140 feet long and 50 feet wide,
will fill the skies over Veterans Park on
Milwaukee’s Lakefront at the 36th Annual
Maggiano’s Frank Mots International Kite
Festival, Sat., Sept. 6, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
and Sun., Sept. 7, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The
Kite Society of Wisconsin and Illinois along
with Gift of Wings are presenting the free
event. Parking for the event is also free.
The public is invited to bring kites and
take part in the Fast Track Grand Launch at
noon each day, when nearly 600 kites will
be set aloft. Event-goers without kites may
purchase them at the event.
Master-class professional kite-flying
teams will perform three times each day
beginning at 12:30 p.m. Professionals
include The Chicago Fire Kite Team, a preci-
sion kite-flying team; Team O2, a dual-line
pair; Mike Delfar, a dual-line sport kite-flyer;
and the team of Connor and Amy Doran,
top-12 finalists on “America’s Got Talent.”
Team Too Much Fun from Los Angeles will
make its Milwaukee debut, and Yves Laforest
and the Canadian Dream team, from
Montreal, will fly the new mega-octopus kite
and the giant manta ray kite. Additional
experienced individuals and teams from the
U.S. and Canada will perform.
At about 2:15 p.m., the Kaplan
University “Kids Mad Dash of 100 Kites” will
get under way, as children run to launch their
kites. Free kites will be given to the first 100
children participating.
“The Kite Whisperer,” Brett Williams, will
offer free kite-flying lessons throughout the
festival.
Food items including Johnsonville Brats,
Palermos Pizza, and Red Hot Chicago Hot
Dogs will be available for purchase.

HAPPY 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY BY

Milwaukee and
Waukesha Counties
www.comfortkeepers.com
Lulrene’s smile lights up
Harriet’s home and life.
Harriet and Howard built their
home when they first married 60
years ago. Harriet had been in the
hospital and then rehab. With a
desire to return home, their
daughter thought she might need
some additional assistance once
she got there. Comfort Keepers
has been there ever since.
Caregiver Lulrene has been with
Harriet since day one. Harriet said
that all of her caregivers are very
nice but, “Lulrene is the best.”
Lulrene’s energy and smile light
up the room when she enters
Harriet’s home and life, making a
difference in her quality of daily
living.
When Comfort Keepers
interviewed Harriet and Howard
the words, “how adorable they
are,” came to mind. Not everyone
gets to remain in his or her
beloved home and be happily
married for 60 years.
Comfort Keepers cares for
Harriet, helping her get her up,
dressed and going for the day.
Just that little bit of help is all it
takes to stay safe and secure in
their home together.
