THE ASHTON Park May Fair turned out to be a big success with crowds flocking to the town centre park on a glorious sunny day. We’ve got loads of pictures from the event on pages 13-16. Well done to West Kirby Light Opera Society for putting on their excellent production last month. We’ve got pictures from that as well as a feature on West Kirby’s very own classic car club and lots of local news from the area. There’s also features on gardening as well as a what’s on guide and business directory. Please remember to support your local businesses.

IN THE NEWS
Victory for Esther A JOYOUS Esther McVey has vowed to give the area a strong voice in Westminster after securing victory for the Conservatives in West Wirral. Ms McVey, who lives in West Kirby, won with a majority of 2,436 over Labour’s Phil Davies. She said: “What a journey this has been and what a momentous General Election, with people queuing at the polling stations and a phenomenal turnout. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible. To those who came out and voted and to those who came out and helped over the last seven years, without every single one of you this result wouldn’t have been possible. “We always said we wanted to have a strong voice for Wirral West in Westminster and that’s what we’re going to do.” Fake £20 notes COUntErfEit £20 notes have been in circulation in the Hoylake and West Kirby area. Local shopkeepers have reported they are receiving £20 notes and then realising afterwards that they are counterfeit. The two serial numbers to look out for are AE17687534 and AL27448990. Call Merseyside Police on 0151 709 6010. Roundabout completed THE eagerly-anticipated new roundabout on the A540 at Thurstaston was officially opened last month. Wirral’s outgoing mayor, Cllr Andrew Hodson, unveiled a plaque to mark the completion of the project, which will make for safer and more efficient traffic flow. Ian Chalmers, who represents Irby, Thurstaston and Pensby Amenity Society, said: “We are delighted that traffic flow will now be improved and exiting Station Road will no longer be like playing Russian Roulette.” Officer Geoff is on his bike PoLICE Community Support officer Geoff Graham has been back to school in West Kirby. He spent the day at Black Horse Hill Infants School helping children aged six years and upwards to cycle safely and ‘ditch the stabilisers’. Geoff is also active in the security marking of cycles. Geoff has worked with cycling charity Sustrans in other schools across the West Kirby area and has been teaching children of various ages how to ride safely, from ‘ditch the stabilisers’ to ‘riding safely on the road’. He is also available for the security marking of cycles and he can be contacted on 0151 777 2153. Improve your appearance without surgery

New cosmetic services at the Sandstone Clinic, West Kirby

WHen Wayne Roberts of the Sandstone Clinic invited me along to try out a new Laser Lipo treatment which would guarantee me inch loss I was a little bit dubious never having heard of it before, but thought give it a go “all I have to lose is inches”, writes Karen Schroder I arrived at the Sandstone Clinic and was met by Denise Roberts, a fully trained and qualified Laser Lipo technician, who very quickly put me at ease. After filling a medical questionaire it was time for the treatment to begin. I had decided to have my tummy area done as although I do sit ups every day, I still have a few wobbly bits to contend with. Taking a tape measure, Denise measured three areas around my stomach, I then lay on a bed with a cover over me whilst Denise explained the science behind the treatment which in itself is very simple, A belt with laser paddles was placed around my tummy, the laser beams then penetrate the skin to a depth of 9mm, to reach the layers of fat which then sets off a reaction which involves the fat being broken down and put back into the digestive system where it is then dispersed the natural way… After just 20 minutes the treatment was over and I was measured again, I was amazed I had lost a total of 21/2 inches off my stomach area. Denise recommended I go home and do 40 minutes of exercise to really ensure the treatments success. I have not put the inches back on and I would definitely recommend this treatment to anyone looking for a permanent and cost effective way to lose inches without having to resort to invasive surgery.

Language clubs are a big hit with pupils
At Avalon School, learning a foreign language is something the pupils have been familiar with for some time, with Spanish being taught as part of the curriculum for over 10 years. Since January this year, however, the school has also been pleased to offer both infants and juniors the chance to expand their foreign language knowledge with the introduction of two brand new lunch-time and after-school clubs for French and German. the ‘J’aime le francais’ and ‘ich liebe Deutsch’ fun with language clubs are run by local foreign languages teacher Sheena Harris. Sheena, whose three children are also pupils at Avalon, has been delighted and overwhelmed by the overnight success of the clubs. She explains: “I currently have almost 60 pupils attending and I have had to increase the weekly sessions from two to four in order to accommodate the different age groups.” the aim of the clubs is to allow the children to have fun learn-

ing French and German via a wide range of activities including songs, rhymes, story-telling and games with emphasis on the spoken language. Martin Lloyd, who joined Avalon as the new headteacher last September, is also thrilled with the success of the new extracurricular activities. “Avalon School may soon become the first primary school to gain language college status!” he joked. Joking apart though with local secondary schools like Calday Grammar teaching up to six different foreign languages, Avalon are certainly giving their pupils a head start with some unique and very valuable experience for the future!

Musical theatre alive and well

WESt Kirby Light opera Society produced another fantastic performance at the Floral Pavillion, New Brighton, last month. The cast of Once Upon a Time at the Adelphi received a standing ovation. The musical switches between the present day Adelphi and the 1930s when the hotel was in its heyday. There were lots of funny moments and great songs, which combined to make it a great night of entertainment. Congratulations go to musical director Robert Bowness and the cast. Can’t wait for the next show!

Wood burns faster when you have chopped it yourself – Harrison Ford

EArly SuMMEr FloWErS
GArdEninG by JAnET HEATH
JuNE is the month when shrubs and perennials are flowering at their best and the foliage is still fresh before the summer tiredness sets in. Trees such as Acer palmatum have wonderful coloured leaves in pale green, deep red or salmon pink depending on the variety. If you have a garden sheltered from strong wind, with a free draining soil that does not dry out, try one of the smaller varieties making sure to plant it well away from any buildings. The shrub, Weigela flowers in June and is easy to grow with a long flowering period. They have white, pink or red flowers and some varieties have purple or variegated foliage. This shrub will grow to 6ft or 2m in size but if it gets too large you can cut it back hard, preferably just after flowering. It grows best in sunny or lightly shaded positions. A smaller shrub for June is Cistus, of which there are many varieties both tall and lower growing. They are evergreen shrubs for sunny dry situations and have 2 inch flowers in white or pink, which look as though they are made of crumpled tissue paper. Lupins and delphiniums flower in June but can be damaged by slugs as they start to grow so keep a look out and grow them in drier positions that the slugs seem to favour less. The magenta purple flowers of the perennial Geranium Ann Folkard are striking and last for a long time. After the first flowering in summer, cut the leaves and dead flowers back and you should get a second flowering in autumn. Grow it in front of the yellow flowered Lysimachia punctata (Yellow Loosestrife) for a striking combination of magenta and yellow flowers. Although last winter was tough on plants, it may be worth considering the tender prostrate osteospermums Cannington roy or Whirlygig. this perennial has wonderful white and pink daisy flowers and does well in the sun. I have it planted next to the slightly tender small shrub Convolvulus cneorum (no it is not bindweed but a small well behaved shrub!) that has silver leaves and white flowers at the same time as the osteospermum. Both made it through the winter in a sheltered position. Janet Heath, Garden Mentor Tel 01244 318258 www.gardenmentor.co.uk

DID you know that West Wirral has it’s very own classic car club? Triumph Appreciation (Wirral) and Friends’ has been meeting every month at The Cottage Loaf, Thurstaston for almost 20 years, has over 50 members and is very active!

HI I’m Dave Evennett and I like cars! My Dad was chief designer at Meccano, the original makers of Dinky Toys, so what would you expect. During the early years after the war when toys were scarce I was brought up on a diet of Dinky Toys, Hornby Dublo Trains and Meccano Sets. Small wonder I still like playing with things like that, except these days they are usually a bit bigger! Thirty five years ago I bought, second-hand, a Triumph 2.5 PI Estate car (PI stood for Petrol Injection, something Triumph pioneered). This car was incredibly advanced and my love affair with Triumphs began. I found myself attracted to every model in the range and wanted one of each. Realsing my rescources and the demands of family life would seriously limit my scope I came up with a brilliant idea. I would get together with others folk of like mind and enjoy their cars instead....at their expense, of course. Sorted. I started by knocking on doors where ever I saw a Triumph on the driveway and to this day Bob and Peter are still amongst my best friends. A few years later we decided to try and attract more enthusiasts so we put a little invitation in the local rag and 35 people turned up! That night in the Cottage Loaf in Thurstaston ‘Triumph Appreciation (Wirral) and Friends’ was born. over the coming months I hope to introduce you to some of those friends and of course their cars. Treat for beer drinkers: CALDY Rugby Club are staging their ‘Twenty – 20 Beer Festival on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th May with a celebration of 20 beers all brewed within a 20 mile radius of the club. The Club is anticipating a larger than normal turnout of real ale enthusiasts keen to support the wealth of local breweries in the area in the marquee at Paton Field, Caldy. Marquee doors will be open 6pm – 11pm on Friday and 12 noon - 12pm on Saturday. Call Jane on 07747 842 144 for further details.
