IN THE NEWS
Police on patrol POLICE have been tackling boozed up rowdy youths causing problems in the Greenbank Road and Gilroy Road area of West Kirby. Local police, with help from the Police ASB Task Force were out in force in the Greenbank Road and Dee Lane / beach areas of the town over the summer. A drugs warrant was executed in Gilroy Road, one person was arrested for possessing cannabis with intent to supply it. Housing Officers from Wirral Partnership Homes joined the patrol with four families warned about their behaviour. Two local males have been arrested over an incident in which a business in the area was threatened – both currently on bail. The mobile police station was set up outside Coronation buildings. Local residents have reported a noticeable drop in rowdy behaviour. In the courts A 46-year-old woman from Wallasey was convicted of shoplifting in West Kirby last month. The courts also dealt with a Tranmere man who was convicted of shoplifting in WK with a two month prison sentence. A 44-year-old WK woman and her 17-year-old son, from Orrysdale Road, appeared at Wirral Magistrates Court following a number of incidents in the West Kirby area. The woman was convicted of a Public Order Act offence that happened in the town centre. She was fined £60 and ordered to pay £175 in costs. The son was convicted of two Public Order Act offences and a separate offence of possessing a controlled drug (Class A) in West Kirby. He was made subject of a six week electronically monitored curfew. Heritage on show WIRRAL’S History and Heritage Open Days are taking place between 9th and 12th September. Among the buildings which are open to the public is West Kirby Methodist Church. Opened in 1904, replacing the smaller one next door, the church on Westbourne Road, is unusual for a non-conformist church in that the windows are nearly all of commemorated stained glass. The church had strong connections with the RAF West Kirby station during the war and the station’s standard hangs in the church. A display relating to the camp will be shown. It is open on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th from 10am-4pm and on Sunday from noon to 4pm. Whatever the weather, more and more of us are choosing to opt for a more ‘Mediterranean’ style of living – with more time spent in the garden and a growing fusion between outdoor and indoor living.

Blinds, awnings and shutters can really help to achieve this idyll – opening up your home, allowing you to maximise the al fresco experience as well as protecting the internal and external appearance of your home. local specialists, apollo Blinds have a huge range of stunning awnings, shutters and blinds, with designs to complement any interior look or design style. Mark McQuilliam and the team are at the leading-edge of contemporary design and installation and were an obvious choice to help guide us through the key choices for summers hottest home accessories…..

Patios and terraces are almost always designed to sit in full sun. a place to gather with family and friends, relax and unwind. too much sun, however, can be both dangerous and uncomfortable. adding an awning to your patio design helps both protect from the sun and offers useful protection for any passing showers! They help you create a totally useable space and maximise your outdoor usage – whatever the wonderful British weather throws at us! hugely practical, a well fitted awning can also help protect the exterior of your home from the elements whilst reducing glare to interior rooms. Now available in a wide variety of designs, styles and materials, awnings can be permanent or retractable, enhancing any grand design.

aWnings – Outside shelter, inside shade

Supremely stylish and completely contemporary, plantation shutters are today’s iconic design feature. They feed our passion for clean, bright, modern interiors and are also incredibly versatile. Shutters look magnificent in an elegant Georgian or edwardian setting and can oodles of additional charm to a traditional cottage style property. Modern homes can use shutters to create a design style adding a romantic, cosy feel to even the blankest of canvases. Best of all, plantation shutters are far from unaffordable, with a wide variety of styles, materials and finishes to chose from.

PlantatiOn shutters – stylish and tiMeless

Once again, these clever little blinds offer much needed protection from the sun, reduce glare and enhance design and interiors schemes. Most of us use our conservatories as an extension to our gardens or as a tV, family or dining room – all key living spaces which need to be ‘useable’. Well fitted conservatory blinds can transform ‘green-house’ environments into practical, comfortable spaces all year round. ‘Many of our blinds also offer protection against harmful UV rays,’ commented Mark. ‘They can also help minimise sun damage to your furniture and accessories, prolonging its life keeping your conservatory looking and feeling fresh.’

Interior design thoughts with Ally MacDermot, from Your Choice Interiors

“..the meeting took place in what I called the ‘processed room’ - it was one of six done for us by a decorator from Sloane’s years ago, and the term struck in my head. “It was THE most decorator’s room: the angora wool carpet the colour of dawn, the most delicate grey imaginable- you could hardly walk on it; and the silver panelling and leather tables and creamy pictures and slim fragilites looked so easy to stain that we could not breathe hard in there, though it was wonderful to look into from the door when the windows were open and the curtains whispered querulously against the breeze...” Francis Scott Fitzgerald- The Last Tycoon Beautiful, pale, untouched by anything other than a light breeze. A vision to hold only in your mind, and release as quickly in case you held too hard and crushed it. As Fitzgerald wrote “ the most decorator’s room”. Oh to interior design a room that no one would walk into, no children would play, no guests would touch those leather tables, let alone put a wine glass on them. A room where silver panelling gained no dust, and no clumsy visitors to render fragilites crashing to the ground. But those children are mine, those guests are my friends. Please don’t stand outside Mr Scrooge looking in at what you only dream of, please come in. As much as an “interior decorator” will want this whimsical illusion of perfection left untouched by even the most bated breath, the “interior designer”will be inviting people to enjoy this space. After all, you wanted the dream room, so enjoy it.

Where next for cash Isas?
Financial column with Simon Tutton, from the Hadlow Edwards Partnership
For many people a cash ISA is regarded as part of their longer term financial planning however with rates as they are now it is fair to ask if they are fit for purpose and if an alternative strategy should be considered. Over £178 billion is tied up in cash ISAs according to the Building Society Association* and interest rates on the majority of accounts are particularly poor. According to Moneyfacts July 2010, the top paying instant cash ISA paid 2.75% and the best fixed rate is 4.25% over 5 years with many accounts paying a miserly 0.10%. The rate of inflation at time of going to press is 3.2% meaning that your money will be losing purchasing power if your interest rate does not match this. ISAs can be transferred to alternative providers without losing the original tax benefits which means where you have a number of tax year ISAs lumped into one which is not proving a decent return the whole amount can be moved if you so wish. In addition, it means that you do not lose this year’s allowance. It is also possible to transfer cash ISAs to stocks and shares ISAs. Where a cash ISA is regarded as long term savings you could be well advised to consider this route. Historically, over the longer term, investing in stocks and shares have proved more profitable than deposits and have the added potential to make a real return on your money above inflation. They can also be used to provide a tax free income, which can be used to supplement a pension and provide tax free capital growth. However they do carry more risk to your original capital and it is particularly important that where you are considering switching a cash ISA to a stocks and shares ISA you take appropriate advice. ISA funds can invest in anything from low risk Government Bonds to high risk Emerging Market funds together with anything available in between. Where someone feels that they would like to consider an alternative to cash ISAs but do have concerns about fluctuations in the value of investments some of the low risk funds may well be a good way to put a toe in the water. These can provide the benefits of a greater return without carrying all of the risks of investment by spreading the risk between a number of different funds and assets. If you have accumulated a decent sum in cash ISAs and want to look at alternatives a full review of the options available could well be a profitable and good use of your time. *www.bsa.org.uk June 2010 Please note that the current favourable tax treatment of ISA’s may not be maintained and may be subject to future changes in legislation. Guides unveil their special stone
THE 2nd West Kirby Guides were delighted to welcome the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides of their District at an event to unveil a very special stone in Ashton Park. The stone was the idea of Veronica Ward who retired as the unit guider recently after running 2nd West Kirby Guides for 20 years. The Guide Unit has been involved with Ashton Park for many years and undertakes monthly service afternoons when the girls help with planting and litter picking and maintain a flower border. Several girls, who are now Young Leaders and Senior Section, also spent a considerable amount of time selecting the play equipment in the recently refurbished children’s play area and completing application forms to apply for funding. County Commissioner Sue Dutton, representatives from The Friends of Ashton Park and other guests joined them for the ceremony after which they sang some campfire songs. Amy Winterson was congratulated on gaining her Queen’s Guide Award with a special cake decorated with a Queen’s Guide Badge. This is the highest award that can be achieved in Guiding and Amy is looking forward to an official ceremony in London when she will meet the Countess of Wessex. Fifty youngsters from some of the most deprived areas of Swaziland, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Thailand and India have been given the chance of a lifetime to travel to the Wirral for a week of friendship, rugby and a host of cultural and sporting experiences. The initiative, led by Festival Chairman Jane Corlett, is part of the wider remit of the charity touraid whose aim is to create long term economic and social benefits for children from disadvantaged communities throughout the world by creating sustainable links between these communities and clubs

and schools in the UK. The boys will be hosted by local schools Pensby Sports College, Kingsmead, St. Anselm’s College, Birkenhead and West Kirby Residential School, all of whom have been working hard to raise funds to finance the boys’ trip. The focal point of the trip will be the Caldy International U13 Touraid Festival which will take place at Caldy Rugby Club on Sunday 26th September. Says Festival Chairman Jane Corlett “The festival will be a fantastic celebration of so many countries coming together under the banner of sport and unity and we hope that Wirral people will join us in supporting these youngsters whose lives have been blighted by so much deprivation and hardship. And even better, entry is free!” Over 30 tours have been arranged by Touraid over the last four years but this is the first in the North of England and the key say the organisers is ‘legacy’. Rugby is simply the catalyst. The real aim is to give these children the chance to improve their lives through the bonds they develop with the schools and clubs who will support them in the coming years through friendship and funding. Many of the boys are orphans whose team very often becomes their family through which

they learn to strive to improve their lives and that of their contemporaries back in their homelands. “It is a great example of how sport, so good at breaking down economic, language and social barriers, can make a real difference to the lives of these children.” For more information on Touraid and the Festival call Jane Corlett on 07747 842 144 or email [email protected] or go to www.caldyrugby. co.uk

AuTumn dRAWing in
SEPtEmBER and october are good months for planting so if you have a border where plants are congested, get to work in September.
Herbaceous perennials can be dug up, split and replanted. New plants can be purchased and planted. The soil will be warmer than in spring so plants will get away well before winter. It should be wetter in autumn so there will be less watering of new planting. Colour and interest in autumn can come from old favourites such as Asters in pink and mauve colours. If you want bright cheerful flowers then try Helenium Butterpat for a tall growing plant with yellow flowers which will last for some time, especially if you dead head regularly. Bees love the flowers. The Passion flower (Passiflora) also flowers in late summer and early autumn so if you can find it a sunny, sheltered spot you will be rewarded by the most beautiful exotic flowers scrambling thorough shrubs or up a wall or fence. Grasses start to look their best in autumn. Miscanthus sinensis varieties will provide a

non invasive plant with long feathery stems of silvery or purple grass heads. The variety Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light has green leaves with cream edges and reddish grass stems in autumn. Autumn is also the time to start scarifying the lawn to remove excess moss and dead grass allowing air and moisture to penetrate the ground. If you have a compacted lawn you can aerate using a fork to make holes in the lawn to about 3 ins deep every 6 inches or so. Hard work but it can help to revive the grass. Next feed with an autumn lawn feed then once that has been done you should top dress using a proprietary brand which is a mix of sand and organic soil. Winter lettuce and salads should be sown in early September. Remember to stake sprout and broccoli plants so they can survive the winds of winter ready to give you sprouts and tender broccoli in winter and spring. ouR picture this month is of Steve and Barbara irving with their current triumph, and was taken in June this year at the Aldford Village Fete, just outside chester. This car has the 2,500cc version of Triumphs six cylinder engine and with a few little improvements made to the suspension, it has no trouble keeping up with today’s traffic! Rumour has it that BMW saw these cars as rivals many years ago. Maybe that explains why they now own and sit on the Triumph name to this very day! Just like the TR6 sports car we discussed in the last edition, these lovely family/executive saloons were also powered by Triumphs silky smooth six cylinder engines. These always worked best with a manual gearbox and with the optional overdrive. This arrangement gave the cars six forward gears more than forty years ago; so whether you were on mountains or motorways, you could always find the ideal gear. Independent suspension on all four corners ensured smooth safe progress, power steering and power brakes took the strain. Shortly after buying their first Triumph 2000 saloon thirty years ago, Steve and Barbara loaded it to the gills and took their children on a family holiday in Wales. Steve, a motor mechanic, was very impressed with the way the car went up and down the hills compared with his

previous car and he became a complete convert. One day he gave the car an extra special polish and upon seeing it, his father John, there and then made an offer Steve couldn’t resist and a deal was done. John loved this Triumph so much that when we started our local club, “Triumph Appreciation” twenty years later, John became one of the very first founder

members. Soon after that he had his sons, his daughter and his grandson all enrolled; the family by then having at least three Triumph saloons between them. John, who still loves to come to our meetings has now sadly had to give up driving and part with his beloved Triumph 2000 after all those years, due to his age.... although I must add, not due to the car’s age!! HEALTH AND BEAUTY
with Angela Bartlett

Q. i have purchased a cream that claims to ‘act like botox’, but after six weeks of use i have seen very little difference in my wrinkles. Are there really creams that can achieve the same effect as botox? A. the short answer is: no! Due to the effectiveness of Botox for softening lines and wrinkles, many cosmetic manufacturers have jumped onto the ‘wrinkle softening bandwagon’ and have made all types of promises that are just not justified. A recent study* published in Dermatologic Surgery pitted Botox, against a placebo saline injection, and three different cosmetic products, that claimed superiority to ‘act like botox’. There were 77 women divided into groups of five to participate in the study. An outside investigator measured wrinkle improvements in the skin using the Facial Wrinkle Scar scale, at weeks 4, 8 and 12 after the treatments. the independent examiner noted the most improvement with the patients treated with Botox. there was a minimal difference between the placebo injection of saline and the other three wrinkle creams. So don’t be fooled by these ‘botox-like’ creams! *Beer, K.R. Comparative evaluation of the safety and efficacy of botulinum toxin type A. Dermatologic Surgery: 2006 February, vol 32, no 2 pg 184. Q. What is the current trend for eyebrows for Autumn 2010? A. i was a judge for the Young make-up Artist of the Year, olympia, London at the end of June and one of the thoughts that crossed my mind as i looked at the makeup models was just how much heavier brows are now than they were even twelve months ago. however, heavier does not mean wild and unruly - brows should be groomed and shaped to suit your eye shape. if your colouring can take it, darken them with eyebrow tinting or brow pencil to add definition and drama to the eye area. if you are unsure of how to achieve a good effect, visit a qualified beauty therapist who will help you.

BOOK REVIEWS:

SEPTEMBER MUST-READS
BY REBECCA CURRIE, FROM LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, WEST KIRBY

Fiction: The Finkler Question- Howard Jacobson A dinner between three long-time friends sets the bittersweet mood of this book. The three friends are Julian Treslove, a professionally unspectacular BBC producer and hapless romantic; his old school pal Sam Finkler a popular Jewish philosopher; and Libor Sevick, an old Czech and their former teacher. Sam and Libor have recently become widowers and Treslove’s unsuccessful record with women gives him the honorary status of third widower. After dinner and a sweetly painful evening of reminiscence, Treslove walks back to Regent Street. Lingering outside the oldest violin dealer in the country, he is mugged by a woman, who may, or may not, have called him a Jew in the process. From here on in Treslove’s whole life comes into question. A warm, funny, human, melancholic book. Longlisted for this year’s Booker Prize at the time of writing this review- I wait with interest to see if it makes the shortlist. Biography: Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother- Xinran Chinese journalist, radio presenter and author of Good Women of China, Xinran has brought together a collection of stories of Chinese mothers who have lost their daughters, either through the notorious Chinese one-child policy or through economic necessity. Some were given up for adoption, others abandoned on city streets, outside hospitals and orphanages or on station platforms. Others even had to see their baby daughters being taken away at birth and drowned. The book is divided into ten chapters, each telling the story of a different woman, and in some cases including the stories of the adoptive mothers. The book sends a heartrending message from their birth mothers to all those Chinese girls who have been adopted overseas (at the end of 2006 there were over 120,000 registered adoptive families for Chinese orphans, almost all girls, in 27 countries), to show them how things really were for their mothers, and to tell them they were loved and will never be forgotten. Children’s fiction (0-4): The Troll- Julia Donaldson (illustrations David Roberts) From the author of The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson, one of the most popular children’s writers of all time, here is a super new book combining trolls and pirates all inside one cover. Colourful, uncomplicated, with a salutary moral and lots of laughs, a book any small child will enjoy! And don’t forget Gareth Williams author of ‘Angel of Death’ will be talking about and signing copies of his book at Linghams, Heswall on Wed Sept 8th at 6.30 pm.
