Music Psychology Recap.
Exploring MUSICAL BEHAVIOUR: APPROACHES and RESEARCH METHODS

Approaches:
1. Biological – The physiological responses to music: Hormones, nervous system - The neurological responses to music: Brain regions/activity 2. Developmental – The Physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of humans - Musicality - Music identity - Vocal maturation 3. Social – Self perception, interaction with others and group behaviour (E.g. string quartet)

Methods: IT’S THE IMPLICATION, APPLICATION AND INTERPRETATION OF THE RESEARCH WHICH IS IMPORTANT: why research? What can it contribute? 1. Experiments: Testing theories, analytical techniques (ANOVA) 2. Observation: Objectivity, coding behaviour 3. Questionnaires: Capable of reaching more people at a shallower level. Social networks, rating scales 4. Interviews: Offer depth and quality as opposed to breadth of numbers. One can acquire complexity about individual experiences. 5. Mixed methods: One might follow up a questionnaire with an interview
