Video Conferencing Notes
- Video conferencing in its most basic form is the transmission of image and speech, back and forth between two or more physically separate locations (Imagine a telephone call where you can see the speaker or a television through which you can talk). - Two-way – can be just sound or sound and images (moving images) - Cameras simultaneously swap live pictures between the TV screens in each location. - Cameras can be set to show the whole room, zoom in on one person or focus on a whiteboard/overhead projector or a special document camera can be set up to send shots of papers, graphs or overheads. - You can view pictures you are sending at the same time using the picture in picture function on the screen. - Videotaping of the entire meeting is also available if taping is required. - Three or more Videoconferencing. locations can be connected using multi point

Can be used for: • Family celebrations • Sales presentations and Product launches • Company meetings • Training • Distance education/learning - ie, foreign language and cultural exchanges

Useful for: • Sharing teachers and expertise • Educating people from a distance • Learning languages – converse with people abroad • Making quick decisions • No need to travel • No jet lag • Convenient locations

Why Use Video Conferencing in the First Place?
When a live visit is not possible, videoconferencing makes a face-to-face visit possible and an ongoing relationship can take place. Videoconferencing is usually easier than visiting so communication can be more frequent, saving time and resources. In an educational sense students have a greater opportunity to form meaningful relationships with children or others who may be very different from them.

Why Don’t Some People Use Videoconferencing?
Fear of not being able to handle the technology Some fear cameras and having to see their own picture and hear their own voice. Others simply don’t think they have to communicate with people outside the office. We believe that people simply don’t know when to use it. They simply haven’t discovered the uses; ie. they have to change the way they work.

Better use of resources — Budget, manpower etc Improved communications Reduced travel costs — Airfares, Hotels, Meals, Rental cars etc Better time management possible Reduced non productive time Accelerated decision making possible Additional staff participation at meetings More time efficient meetings

Types of Call
Video conferencing can be point-to-point (between two end-point s), or multipoint (combining two or more end-point s into the same "conversation"). When you begin to combine diverse endpoints into one setting where audio and video from each can be shared in real-time, whole new levels of interaction are enabled and entirely new ideas for communication can result.
