What to Expect From a Hearing Test If you suspect that you are suffering from hearing loss? You might be overwhelmed, anxious and afraid. You may be wondering what your next step is and what the future will hold for you. Ask your doctor for a list of hearing specialists. These practices typically have both a Hearing Instrument Specialist and provider on staff for patient convenience. A hearing test is needed to determine if hearing instruments will be beneficial to your situation. Testing is quick, simple and painless. An audiometer is the main device used to evaluate hearing. You will sit in a soundproof booth while wearing headphones or earphones that are connected to the audiometer. The audiometer plays sounds at varying frequencies and volumes in each individual ear separately. You will be instructed to raise your hand or press a button every time you hear a sound. The hearing specialist will use an audiogram to plot the decibels of loudness administered and what you were able to hear. By plotting this information on a graph, they will be able to quickly see what levels and frequencies you were unable to hear and determine the extent of your hearing loss.
