A WELL RUN BUSINESS
“Business is a combination of war and sport.” Andre Maurois

“Business is in itself a power.” Garet Garrett
“Business is never so healthy as when, like a chicken, it must do a certain amount of scratching around for what it gets.” Henry Ford

“Business, more than any other occupation, is a continual dealing with the future; it is a continual calculation, an instinctive exercise in foresight.” Henry R. Luce

“Do more than is required. What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers merely following? The extra mile.” Gary Ryan Blair

STAFF TIPS
Raise staff morale: Keeping your staff happy is essential to consistent, quality production of goods and services. You can do this by ensuring the following are made part of company provisions:
1. Communication: “A key problem in many organisations is the perception of a disconnect between management and staff lower down the chain. If you are to keep your employees happy, it is vital that you listen to their concerns and ideas – and, where possible, act upon them.” Be Flexible: “While it can often be difficult to arrange employee leave and to work around unexpected sick days, you should attempt to be as flexible as possible when negotiating with your workforce,” and “It is also important to remember that you have a legal obligation to properly consider flexible working patterns for most parents with children under the age of 16, or disabled children under the age of 18. Try to take the initiative and make an offer of these arrangements before being asked by your employee. This will help to put you on a firm footing when it comes to negotiation.” Benefits and incentives: “The scale of your benefits package will likely depend on the size of your firm. Do not presume that you have to operate a company car scheme or build a gym in your offices. Instead, concentrate on personalised incentives that raise staff morale while encouraging good teamwork. Staff events, paid for by the company, are a great way of making your employees feel valued and simultaneously helping to forge relationships within your workforce. Consider things like bowling or a simple meal out as a way of solidifying your team.”

OFFICE GUIDE
Downsize your office if you can and focus on design and functionality over sprawling, boring and bland office spaces. Design is a key element to focus on. Design: A design of an office, not matter how small should include the basics that can be gained from making spaces serve dual functions. Matching office design with sustainable business energy solutions can turn your business into a well run machine.

Considering the layout is very important to design along with bringing personality and functionality to a work environment :
"How are decisions made in your business? All companies, and especially small firms, must be clear about more than just their budget before they can start designing their offices, says Richard Shugar, the principal and owner of 2fORM, an architecture firm based in Oregon. He advises his clients to consider the flow of internal direction when designing the office. He says: "It's not only just about their business model, but how it's how they plan on running their business. How do they plan on communicating from within? Is it top down? Does the president make decisions and people follow? Or is it a collaborative environment where people work together? How does the space incorporate everyone so that the employees feel like they're getting vested in the company?“ Even if you're dealing with a space 500 square feet or smaller, the positioning of each employees matters. Is the CEO situated in the corner with a big office, or stationed on a desk with the interns? The placement of employees in a confined area reflects the flow of direction of the organization. For example, Shugar, who manages six employees, sits right in the middle of his office. It gives him a chance to see what everyone is working on, and it gives his employees ample opportunity to approach him..”

MANAGEMENT TIPS
Know-How is Not Enough. “Just because you’re an expert in your field doesn’t mean that you have what it takes to be a business owner. When you hang out that open sign on day one, it is unlikely that customers will flock to you right away just because you know what you’re doing. You’ll need marketing and administration (at the very least) to grease the wheels of your company.” Wise Bread Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals. “Goals you set for yourself, or others, should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-based.” About.com

Do the most important thing first. Trapani calls this "running a morning dash". When she sits down to work in the morning, before she checks any email, she spends an hour on the most important thing on her to-do list. This is a great idea because even if you can't get the whole thing done in an hour, you'll be much more likely to go back to it once you've gotten it started. She points out that this dash works best if you organize the night before so when you sit down to work you already know what your most important task of the day is. Penelopetrunk
