Where are we going ……..
One sunny morning, I was scanning news paper pages to find something new, since was fed up of daily dose of molestation of girls of all age groups, rape cases etc. Every day news of few motor cyclists involved in molesting or rape and murder catches headlines. No one around me at home, I burst out my frustration on my husband and a cool answer comes, “This has to happen!!!” I decided to invite my female friends to ponder over the issue and introspect. Society displaying their anger and demanding severe punishment for the culprits by fast track court, police to do more for our security etc are fully justified. But, are these steps enough? Will these steps be able to eradicate this menace from society, or, is there a scope to do something ourselves as well? Magazines, newspaper or other print / electronic media is full of advertisements wherein semi nude women endorse all products from beauty to electronics. Can’t marketing be done without such pictures? Why have women offered themselves to pose in this manner for the advertisement industry? Whom do these girls impress? Is this a respectable and acceptable profession to earn their bread? TV serials, movies and majority of jokes being spread in the environment through whatever media project women in poor light. Movies are the major source of sending good messages to society. Are they being successful? Few weeks back, I saw Grand Masti and Shudh Desi Romance, till now I am thinking what was the message, these movies were made to convey to the society, and sadly younger generation enjoys, accept this life style and movies earn a huge moolah. We see India is getting modern and has become an open society. Are we going towards Modernization or Westernization? Are we elders convinced that our values and culture are not relevant in today’s age? Are we ready to accept this big change? Historically man woman relations are well known

and nothing has changed from its inception. The crime in focus is directly proportional to the increasing gap between “Have and Have Nots”. One side we have college boys and girls moving freely in all skimpy dresses and crossing all limits with no hesitation and on other side we have large slums and poor families whose children are deprived of all the fun. How will you control them? The day fast track court announced death sentence to all four culprits of Nirbhaya’s case, next day there were two more cases of rape and murder. Even in Kolkata, every day such crime makes news paper headlines. Where is the deterrence of death sentence? Today majority of women want to work, contribute to their family and lead a professionally satisfied life. After all each one of us has spent 15-20 yrs of our life studying. Sitting at home, as a house wife / bai is obviously not the answer. But large no of women are being employed at a show window of many corporate / private / Govt /public sector offices with the sole aim to present pleasing figures to the staff or public. General talk is that beautiful ladies in an office add the colour to the organization. I respect all professions, it is required and must for each one of us to accept and respect. Every citizen can’t become doctor or an engineer. But getting selected to a job just because we accept to behave and dress in a different manner is not accepted. I remember when we were at Pune, a known friend asked me to join her in glamour industry. She reminded me that I am tall and shall fit into modelling for which she was ready to help, since she was into this industry since past few years. Out of curiosity, I asked, what will I have to do there? Prompt answer was, nothing much, dress up well, maintain smiling face and earn lot of money. Unwritten understanding is to look attractive, may have to wear less cloth, deep cut or any similar outfit. Is this the only strong point women have, which industry wants to exploit? To my horror, majority of women have accepted that. Rather than our figure, which is dear to all of us, why can’t we present our intelligence, talent and qualification and be, as part of contributors to an organization in a better way. Whenever anyone talked of dress code in any state / school / college resistance comes from ladies / girls only. I recall, when Delhi University

wanted to impose dress code, students of Miranda College openly commented in front of media camera, “Our body, we will show, we are in a democratic country. People can close their eyes, if they don’t want to see”. To some of us, definition of democracy is limited to this only. Another thought provoking situation: after a week of the incident at Mumbai in which photo journalist was raped, another girl came up as a victim of same crime by same people. Not to discount the crime and the courage of the girl to come up, I draw your attention to the words spoken by the girl; “I and my boy friend wanted a quite place, so we went there”. If this is, what we want from democracy, are we not party to increasing the gap between “Haves and Have Nots”? Is this all we mean by open society? I am a teacher by profession and watch new generation closely in school. Even the children of junior classes are influenced by western living style and we as teachers are helpless in controlling them. To my surprise even their mothers are supporting them. Parent teacher’s day is more of a fashion show for mothers rather than the main aim of analyzing the child’s performance. Today’s generation is carefree and disrespectful to their parents and teachers. I wonder how this society will shape after couple of years. Perhaps, we as elders have accepted this change, and then these are the pit falls of the change. Then why so much of hue and cry against increasing crimes. Many of you must be feeling that I am addressing a very small ambit of the problem. Increasing population, illiteracy level, Govt not doing enough to reduce large gap between rich and poor and lack of parental guidance etc are major contributor to this crime as it is evident from the fact that most of the crime are being committed by people belonging to lower strata of society. But my focus is limited to what can we do within our control. Bigger picture has to be seen collectively and results shall be far reaching. In no way, I am trying to be controversial, these are some of my thoughts, while analyzing, why crime against the women is on increase? The simple answer is the increasing gap between “Haves and Have Nots”.

Women today have established themselves very well in all the male dominated professions to include space programs, sports, business, administration and defense services etc and earned lot of respect. But at the same time coming to my main concern, can we bring in some change? Can we move towards modernization and still maintain our moral values and culture. The world recognizes Indian cultural values and wants to adopt, and we are in a hurry to shed. Jago Grahak Jago!!!
