Why is English important for a journalist?
Nowadays, there is no such thing as ”Romanian journalism”, ”British journalism”,
”French journalism” or ”Australian journalism”. Unlike other domains, the journalism is
universal, therefore it needs an universal language which is, today, English. Due to these facts,
it is essential for us to understand the importance of English, in order to be a good and
professional journalist.
First of all, the most important notion of the journalistic world is the information. Due
to the globalization, we have access to information from all over the world, in every domain,
and very often, the information is given in English. Let’s take, as an example, the international
news agencies. The pieces of information about certain facts, received from these agencies,
are used by Romanian journalists as a reliable source and as an useful start for their news. If
they didn’t know English, which is now the international language, they wouldn’t be able to
transform the information received in news for the Romanian public.
Secondly, English is essential for a person who wants to write about different conflicts
or even wars. In this case, English becomes not only the language that the journalist uses to
gain the information needed, but also a matter of life or death. Let’s take for example our war
reporter, Adelin Petrișor. In Iraq or Afghanistan, it was English the language which opened
him the gates needed, and also the language that was used to transmit him the instructions that
would protect him in that dangerous environment. It is impossible to imagine a war reporter
that is unable to communicate with the others.
Thirdly, English is important not only for the reporters who gather information at the
scene, but also for the person that presents the news for the public. The moderator of a talk
show, for example, must also be very fluent in English, in order to be able to translate the
questions and the answers when a foreign person participates in the debate. A person who has
no English knowledge will never be able to be a reporter, a news anchor or a moderator.
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that today, English is not anymore an
advantage for a journalist, but a real condition for becoming one. The journalists’ weapon is
communication, and nowadays, the international expression for quality communication is
English.
