Why literacy is Important
On the most basic level, literacy is defined as ³the ability to read and write´ However, different organizations have more specific definitions. While passing through the hectic schedule of your classes you ask yourself, ³When am I ever going to use this knowledge?´ Unless you went into architecture or certain types of engineering, medical or any other field you probably haven¶t ever used it (and if you were one of the kids asking that question, you probably didn¶t go into any of those professions). Therefore it is suggested not to think about the utilization of knowledge, think about the utilization of resources to achieve it. When you develop literacy skills, you are learning not just to read, but to think. You are learning to apply your knowledge in one area to other areas as well. Learning to recognize cause-and-effect relationships in stories helps you recognize them in real life, learning to effectively paraphrase information you have read teaches you good interpersonal communication, and interpreting the purpose of a work is very similar to evaluating the purpose of your life, which is essential to setting and achieving goals. On a personal level, literacy is important for survival, and it is necessary for helping your children succeed. On a more global level, the importance of literacy is ³essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, maintaining population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy...and literate societies are better geared to meet pressing development.´ Why is literacy important? Because illiteracy doesn¶t just affect those who are illiterate. Students who are now passing through difficult situations and educating themselves are not actually fighting their own war, but they are also fighting for the best life standards of the people of their area on national and international level. So, student should consider themselves as drivers of their nations and must try their best to enhance it.
