• Physical properties of wood • Usage of wood • Engineered wood

General about wood
1) Chemistry of wood 2) Physical properties of wood

1. Chemistry of wood
• Ability to burn • Non-conductant of electricity • Does not dissolve in water

1. Chemistry of wood
Three main components of wood :
• Cellulose (41-43%) • Hemicellulose(around 20%) • Lignin (27%)

2. Physical properties of wood

• • • •

Strength Hardness Stiffness Density

Physical properties of wood
• • • • • Growth rings Knots Heartwood and sapwood Color Water content

Growth Rings
• If there are clear four seasons, growth can occur in a discrete annual or seasonal pattern, leading to growth rings.

Knots
• A knot is a particular type of imperfection in a piece of wood; it will affect the technical properties of the wood, usually for the worse, but may be exploited for visual effect.

Heartwood and sapwood
• Heartwood is wood that as a result of a naturally occurring chemical transformation has become more resistant to decay. • Sapwood is the younger, outermost wood; in the growing tree it is living wood, and its principal functions are to conduct water from the roots to the leaves . All wood in a tree is first formed as sapwood.

Water Content
The general effect of the water content upon the wood substance is to render it softer. Drying produces a decided increase in the strength of wood.

Usage of wood
1)Wood as a fuel 2) Construction 3) Future usage and recreation

1. Wood usage from fuel to design elements
• Wood has a long • history of being used as fuel, which continues to this day, mostly in seldom occupied living places. It has huge variety of application • Adding a starting from woodstove or industrial use for fireplace to a running home is often felt mechanisms to to add ambiance design elements. and warmth.

2. In construction
• Wood has been an important • construction material since humans began building shelters, houses and boats. New domestic housing in many parts of the world today is commonly made from timber-framed construction.

Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) is a project for metropolitan reforestation that contributes to the regeneration of the environment and urbanisation.

Future wood usage and recreation.

Engineered wood

Osb plate
• Minimal overlap in size; small amount of assembly joints; Hardness, strength and integrity; Suitablefor cutting, milling, drilli ng and further processing; Can make all kinds of wooden construction joints; The use of Class 2 in a wet environment according to ENV 1995-1-1; Does not harm the healthemission class E1; Excellent stability of the nails in restricted areas kraštinÄ—se; High strength bolts for pulling; Excellent treatment of the edges;

• High yield - a homogeneous plate structure; • Time saving for the formation of uniform properties in all directions of plate; • High resistance to fire • Bearing interior construction elements for use in wet environments; • The main board of the floor structures; • Scaffolding; • Packaging, pallets and containers; • Construction of exhibition stands; temporary construction fencing, decorative interior use, the possibility of furthersurface treatment.

Conclusions
• All in all, we can state that wood is one of the most universal materials in terms of physical and chemical properties and can be applied in huge variety of spheres from factories to individual needs and still is in great concurence with modern era materials and technologies involving it.
