Grass Valley Express Lube Car Wash has new look, equipment and owners
He still works for the company as their operations manager. Argento opened the Port of Subs location in Grass Valley and Nevada City and still operates the Nevada City location at 407 Hollow Way. The new Gold Country Express Lube and Car Wash features three oil/lube service bays under the management of Tyler Scott who started working at Gold Flat Express Lube in Nevada City nearly three years ago. A Wyo-Tech graduate, Scott and four lube techs offer services from a simple oil change to transmission flushes. “On average we can do an oil change in about ten minutes” says Scott. “Four by fours take a little longer. We can also replace interior and exterior vehicle lights.” Gold Country Express Lube features Chevron products while the Nevada City location still features Unocal. In addition to the three

After an extensive, nearly four month remodel, the former 10 Minute Oil Change on South Auburn in Grass Valley is now open under the name Gold Country Express Lube and Car Wash. Local businessmen Mike Argento and Steve Nelson have again joined forces up to bring new life to the facility. Argento and Nelson have been partners in the lube business since they opened Gold Flat Lube Express in Nevada City in 1996. Nelson owned and operated Sutherland Oil Company for 38 years before selling the company in 2005 to Hunt & Sons, Inc.

oil/lube service bays, a fourth bay has been remodeled to facilitate full service, interior/exterior vehicle detailing. “We offer all kinds of detail packages including tar removal”. Another byproduct of the remodel was a spacious waiting room. “We took down a wall of one of the old service bays and really expanded the office and waiting area. People enjoy it. No more waiting outside in the heat or rain”. The five bay, self service car wash also experience a major overhaul. All new equipment was installed and the parking/waiting area resurfaced. “One of the nicest things about the car wash is that each wash bay features a dollar bill accepter, so no more searching for quarter or token change machines” said Scott. Gold Country Express Lube and Car Wash is located at 712 South Auburn Street in Grass Valley. The Express Lube and Detail Shop is open Monday through Saturday 8:00am to 5:00pm while the Car Wash is open 24 hours everyday.

Christmas, Holiday Events Getting Set To Kick Off
Holidays at the Empire Mine. The Empire Mine will once again open their doors to the public to attend their annual Holidays at the Empire Mine, Friday, November 25, and Saturday, November 26, from 11:00am to 4:00pm. This family event gives visitors a glimpse of Christmas past with volunteers dressing in period costumes as they portray people who worked at or visited the Empire Mine in its heyday. At The Bourn Cottage you will be greeted by Mr. and Mrs. William Bourn, owners of the Empire Mine, and/or Mr. and Mrs. George Starr, Mine Superintendent. Activities include tours of the holiday decorated living quarters and a visit to Katie’s kitchen for cookies and cider. Local harpist, Kurtis Bershaw, will be performing holiday music in the Cottage. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand greeting children in the Clubhouse. Hotdogs and hot and cold beverages will be available for sale outside the Clubhouse. You can visit the historic Mine Yard as volunteers portray workers of the past and enact a working day at the mine. The 44th Annual Cornish Christmas will kick off on Friday, November 25 from 6:009:00pm on Mill Street and Main Streets in downtown Grass Valley. This year there will be a total of five Cornish Christmas Fridays with the other four taking place on December 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd. This is a free, family event featuring a variety of handcrafted items, sweets and treats being sold by street vendors that compliment downtown store offerings. There will be dedicated areas for kids featuring go karts, pony rides, interactive activities and entertainers. The Cornish Choir will again be singing each Friday at 6:30 and 7:30pm on the Union Steps on Mill Street. This year’s downtown Grass Valley collector’s holiday ornament is The Union Building will be available for purchase for $13.75. New this year to downtown Grass Valley is Santa’s Workshop which will be open on Mill Street Thursdays and Saturdays 2:00-6:00pm, Fridays 4:00-9:00pm and Sundays 1:00-3:00pm through December 23rd. Professional pictures will be available for purchase and kids will receive a free candy cane after visiting Santa. Gifts and treats will also be available for purchase. Kids will also be able to drop off letters to Santa at the Santa Express Mailbox and no charge gift wrapping will be available for shoppers with a receipt from a downtown Grass Valley merchant. Each year Nevada City’s downtown area transforms into a Christmas card come to life with the hilly streets outlined with twinkling white lights and authentic gas lamps, artisan vendors, wandering minstrels and carolers dressed in Victorian attire. Holiday activities for all ages include children’s pony rides, carriage rides, live entertainment, yuletide treats and libations, and of course, Father Christmas. A special $5.00 round-trip Holiday Shuttle service is offered from the parking lots at the Nevada County Government Center at Highway 49 and Maidu Ave. Shuttle hours are 4:30-9:00 pm Wednesdays and noon-6:30pm Sundays. Safety tips for holiday lights
Use only lights that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory. Use only lights that have fused plugs. Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord. Make sure the extension cord is rated for the intended use. Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. Use only insulated staples to hold strings in place, not nails or tacks. Or, run strings of lights through hooks. Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). Portable outdoor GFCIs can be purchased where electrical supplies are sold. Turn off all holiday lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

“We sell stuff that people need every hour of everyday”
It all started out as a simple internet wholesale business run out of his house. Today it is a 5,800 square foot business that resembles an on-going warehouse sale of new merchandise ranging from boots to tools to gloves to magnifying glasses to walking sticks to tarps…and the list goes on and on. To say the least, Swasey’s Public Wholesale is a unique shopping experience. Owned and operated by Grass Valley native Mark Swasey, the business located at 140 East McKnight Way in Grass Valley has become a destination shopping location for many local residents, no matter the season. “I started the business in 1995 out of my house in Colorado, selling products wholesale to hardware stores and on the internet”, said Swasey. “I continued with the business after moving back to Grass Valley in 1996. My wife and I had a 775 square foot house that was full of tote boxes. You had to move boxes just to open the refrigerator door”. They then started to rent storage units, eventually totaling six, just to meet the needs of the business. In 1999 they ended up renting space at their current McKnight Way location, which too has expanded over the course of 12 years. “When I first moved into this location I was still in the wholesale business but would get some walk-in traffic. I didn’t even have cash register”. In 2003 Swasey closed the internet portion of the business to concentrate more on his growing, local retail business and by 2008 the total conversion to retail was complete. Today, Swasey’s Public Wholesale sells a wide variety of products. The inventory has many standard items, but the store itself is ever changing depending on the season or the needs of customers. “We have people

This time of the year Swasey’s Public Wholesale is known for their tarps. They feature seven grades and 75 sizes of tarps, up to 170’ x 170’. They also feature canopy piping and covers. “We can cover just about anything” say Swasey. One of the more enjoyable parts of business are the customers. “We have a very loyal clientele, in all age groups” says Swasey. “I get to know most by name. Surprisingly the mix is about 50/50 men and women customers”. Swasey’s Public Wholesale is open seven days a week from 8:00am to 5:30 Monday through Friday and 8:00am to 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

Robert Cray Band in concert Robert Cray is one of the most popular artists in blues and soul music will perform at the Center for the Arts on Friday, November 18th at 8:00pm. He helped to shape the blues on the national scene in the 1980s with his breakthrough album Strong Persuader in 1986. His soulful and creative guitar work has been a dominant force in blues. Over the years Cray’s musical influence has been recognized and acknowledged. The Blues Hall of Fame will induct Cray as a member on May 4th this year. Cray was born in Columbus, Georgia. An Army brat who grew up all over the country before his folks settled in Tacoma, Washington in 1968, Cray listened intently to soul and rock before becoming immersed in the blues. The cinematic set caught a brief glimpse of Cray when he anonymously played the bassist of the frat party band Otis Day & the Knights in National Lampoon’s Animal House. Grass Valley Express Lube Car Wash has new look, equipment and owners
He still works for the company as their operations manager. Argento opened the Port of Subs location in Grass Valley and Nevada City and still operates the Nevada City location at 407 Hollow Way. The new Gold Country Express Lube and Car Wash features three oil/lube service bays under the management of Tyler Scott who started working at Gold Flat Express Lube in Nevada City nearly three years ago. A Wyo-Tech graduate, Scott and four lube techs offer services from a simple oil change to transmission flushes. “On average we can do an oil change in about ten minutes” says Scott. “Four by fours take a little longer. We can also replace interior and exterior vehicle lights.” Gold Country Express Lube features Chevron products while the Nevada City location still features Unocal. In addition to the three

Another byproduct of the remodel was a spacious waiting room. “We took down a wall of one of the old service bays and really expanded the office and waiting area. People enjoy it. No more waiting outside in the heat or rain”. The five bay, self service car wash also experience a major overhaul. All new equipment was installed and the parking/waiting area resurfaced. “One of the nicest things about the car wash is that each wash bay features a dollar bill accepter, so no more searching for quarter or token change machines” said Scott. Gold Country Express Lube and Car Wash is located at 712 South Auburn Street in Grass Valley. The Express Lube and Detail Shop is open Monday through Saturday 8:00am to 5:00pm while the Car Wash is open 24 hours everyday.

Christmas, Holiday Events Getting Set To Kick Off
Holidays at the Empire Mine. The Empire Mine will once again open their doors to the public to attend their annual Holidays at the Empire Mine, Friday, November 25, and Saturday, November 26, from 11:00am to 4:00pm. This family event gives visitors a glimpse of Christmas past with volunteers dressing in period costumes as they portray people who worked at or visited the Empire Mine in its heyday. At The Bourn Cottage you will be greeted by Mr. and Mrs. William Bourn, owners of the Empire Mine, and/or Mr. and Mrs. George Starr, Mine Superintendent. Activities include tours of the holiday decorated living quarters and a visit to Katie’s kitchen for cookies and cider. Local harpist, Kurtis Bershaw, will be performing holiday music in the Cottage. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand greeting children in the Clubhouse. Hotdogs and hot and cold beverages will be available for sale outside the Clubhouse. You can visit the historic Mine Yard as volunteers portray workers of the past and enact a working day at the mine. It all started out as a simple internet wholesale business run out of his house. Today it is a 5,800 square foot business that resembles an on-going warehouse sale of new merchandise ranging from boots to tools to gloves to magnifying glasses to walking sticks to tarps…and the list goes on and on. To say the least, Swasey’s Public Wholesale is a unique shopping experience. Owned and operated by Grass Valley native Mark Swasey, the business located at 140 East McKnight Way in Grass Valley has become a destination shopping location for many local residents, no matter the season. “I started the business in 1995 out of my house in Colorado, selling products wholesale to hardware stores and on the internet”, said Swasey. “I continued with the business after moving back to Grass Valley in 1996. My wife and I had a 775 square foot house that was full of tote boxes. You had to move boxes just to open the refrigerator door”. They then started to rent storage units, eventually totaling six, just to meet the needs of the business. In 1999 they ended up renting space at their current McKnight Way location, which too has expanded over the course of 12 years. “When I first moved into this location I was still in the wholesale business but would get some walk-in traffic. I didn’t even have cash register”. In 2003 Swasey closed the internet portion of the business to concentrate more on his growing, local retail business and by 2008 the total conversion to retail was complete. Today, Swasey’s Public Wholesale sells a wide variety of products. The inventory has many standard items, but the store itself is ever changing depending on the season or the needs of customers. “We have people

This time of the year Swasey’s Public Wholesale is known for their tarps. They feature seven grades and 75 sizes of tarps, up to 170’ x 170’. They also feature canopy piping and covers. “We can cover just about anything” say Swasey. One of the more enjoyable parts of business are the customers. “We have a very loyal clientele, in all age groups” says Swasey. “I get to know most by name. Surprisingly the mix is about 50/50 men and women customers”. Swasey’s Public Wholesale is open seven days a week from 8:00am to 5:30 Monday through Friday and 8:00am to 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

Nevada County Concert Band to perform The 60 piece band made of local musicians will be playing a variety of music during their Winter Concert on Sunday, December 4 at the First Baptist Church, 1866 Ridge Road in Grass Valley. The concert which will feature holiday, pop and big band tunes will begin at 2:30pm and last for roughly two hours. Admission is free, although donations for local non-profits are always accepted.
