We had a great March cruise to
Loch Lomond for St. Patrick’s
Day thanks to Scott Brown and
Kurt Stahr. The weather turned
out great, just a little rain on Satur-
day night. We had 9 boats and 1
land cruiser. Gary and Sherrill
Schager came down from Oregon
with their fifth wheel. We ate
corned beef & cabbage and had
live entertainment. Two Irish
lasses danced some traditional
Irish jigs before dinner. And, we
danced some not so traditional jigs
to live music after dinner. Again,
Karen Agnew showed her creative
“potatoness” by winning 3
rd
prize
in the potato carving contest.
Right around the corner is Open-
ing Day on the Bay, April 25-26-
27. This year’s theme is Mother
Goose & Friends. Sign up on
line. We will be at the Oakland
Yacht Club.
Building and Grounds manager
Tom Nunan has been busy. Check
out our new blue roof and new
gutters. The giant walnut tree is
gone which will make for more
parking. And, if all goes well the
new natural gas line to the club
house will be installed.
Advertising manager, Carol
Terry, has signed up advertisers
and collected, to date, $2100.00
for our newsletter.
Webmaster, Mike Noonan, has
updated our web pages. You will
find it much easier to check on
current information. CHECK IT

Mark your calendars! GPS class
is April 16
th
at our clubhouse.
There is still one opening. Also,
on May 16
th
guest speaker, James
Martin, will give a slide show,
The Islands of San Francisco
Bay.

Spring is upon us and there are lots of
good things going on at your club!
We have a new roof on the clubhouse,
so no more leaks during our social activi-
ties. While that was being done we also
installed gutters and downspouts to keep
ourselves from getting drenched coming
in the front door.
The City of Napa arborist looked at the
big tree near the shed and determined it
was too far gone to just take out the dead
wood, so the tree was removed and the
stump ground up. The branches were
more than a hazard, especially to any
vehicle parked underneath. It has really
opened up the area for additional usage.
Our cruise-in activities have begun for
the season. The Tiburon Yacht Club was
our first one with a total of thirteen boats
coming to our dock. They were a good
group to get the season started. We
needed to carefully manage the space at
dockside and now know how many boats
we can accommodate. More clubs are
lined up and we are implementing a new
rate structure for different sized craft.
This will help offset especially the costs
of electricity due to larger boats being an
observable trend for some reason. Tibu-
ron, for example, had more 40 footers or
larger than smaller craft with one 54 foot
yacht.
Our next big event at the club is our
Cinco de Mayo party on May 3
rd
. Mark
your calendars and a flyer will be coming
shortly. This is always a great time with
food, music and other activities!
Please get yourselves signed up to host
a Friday Night Dinner by contacting our
O.D. Coordinator, Linda Sharp. Her
information is: [email protected]
or 226-7488
On a personal basis, I will be out of the
loop for a while. A bad case of the
“kneezles” is requiring some attention so
you won’t have me to kick around. On
the other hand, no bad jokes for a while
might give all of you a well deserved
rest.
Have a fun and safe time on the water
and join us at the club!
Clay Parker
FROM THE
FLAG
BRIDGE
April 2008
Spring is that time of year that brings renewal of
the trees, flowers and grasses and the promise of
great boating weather if we can work around a few
puffy clouds and fresh breezes. The cruise out to
Loch Lomand was great. It featured a north wind
on the way home but I am happy to report all safely
made the passage and we were treated to dancing
girls, live music, the traditional corn beef and lots of
fun at our sister club.
This month will find a special event at our Friday
night dinner on the 18
th
. Steve and Ellen Vartan
have arranged for a “meet the wine maker” night
featuring their daughter, a wine maker from the
sierra foothills. Also on Saturday the 19
th
is the
Spring River Clean up Day that coincides with
Earth Day. Volunteers would help us make a good
showing at this worthwhile community event.
The use of the internet to keep our club calendar,
schedule cruises and just get out timely reminders is
becoming more and more useful. Mike Noonan is
taking this to the next level by overseeing some
changes in the programming that allow for greater
input and the ability for more folks to keep the in-
formation updated. Having a domain name like
nvyc.org for our club came about with great fore-
sight by members several years ago. In the begin-
ning, I am told, computer pioneers like Bill and
Marilee’s son helped introduce the club to website
possibilities. Philip Craig also was there and was
the one that registered a series of domain names that
could be useful to the club. Philip has continued the
annual registrations and acted as a trustee for the
registration process. In reviewing the “ownership”
of these names, your Board voted to request that the
names be held by the club rather than through an
individual. Philip agreed and has made the neces-
sary transfer. I honor him this month as one who is
promoting Camaraderie on the Water through his
long term actions of reserving our place on the web.
We lost one of our charter members on March 8.
Ria Donald Johnson was active in our club from its
inception until her passing. Her service as Commo-
dore and Treasurer made her a valuable resource
especially to those of us that do not have all that
history. Her enthusiasm for boating was conta-
gious. With her speedy powerboat, she often
greeted the club at the cruise destination, and after
all were safely tied up, offered a refreshing marga-
rita. I enjoyed working and cruising with her. We
can keep her spirit with us by carrying out our tasks
with her enthusiasm.

DELTA SUMMER ADVENTURE

Here's the somewhat "more-than-preliminary" schedule for the Sacramento Jazz & Delta Cruise:

1}
Rio Vista - Advance NON-REFUNDABLE payment required for reservations, space is

somewhat limited.
2}
Municipal dock, seldom crowded & does not permit reservations, alternative location will
be available
3}
State Park, lots of docks, but reservations may not be available
4}
Advance NON-REFUNDABLE payment required for reservation, space strictly limited to 12

boats.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In our last report we left you headed on your way to Sacramento for the Jazz Festival and
party at the Sac Yacht Club. After you get docked and get yourself acclimated to the facilities,
it's time to nail down your plans for your time here. There will a NVYC dinner at the de l'Etoile's
either Thursday or Friday night, and you will be shuttled back and forth to the de l'Etoile's by
Phil and Nancy.

After the weekend of fun and good music either at the club or downtown, we will spend
Monday night at Walnut Grove. Dinner will be at a restaurant in Locke. Docking is $20.00.

Tuesday we leave Walnut Grove at 10am and then stop at Isleton for lunch at Crawdad
Joe's. You will have a chance to walk around Isleton and see a town.like Locke.that was built
by the Chinese when they worked on the levees in the 20's. Both towns have the original build-
ings and amazingly they are still standing. We leave Isleton at 2
ish
and go to Brannan Island
Park for the night.

Brannan Island Park has showers (10 minutes for $1} and picnic tables, docks, but no
power. We thought that since we will have had a late lunch we probably would want a light din-
ner. So potluck grazing food will be the fare.

Next we are off to Sugar Barge on Bethel Island. Sugar Barge has a nice restaurant and
bar (yeal}. Wednesday night we will eat together in the restaurant.details later. Thursday you
are on your own for the day and evening. There is a pool and plenty of places to walk to occupy
your time during the day. Meals on your own.

Friday we are off to Pittsburg Yacht Club and their chef's Friday night dinner.

Saturday morning we all leave for Homellll

Loch Lomond Cruise Out
March 14, 15, and 16
th

By Scott Brown, Fleet Captain.

Our cruise to Loch Lomond Yacht Club was attended by 9 boats and one trailer, with 22 persons
participating in LLYC’s St. Patrick Day celebration

Eight of the boats left Napa early to make the Mare Island Bridge opening at 9:00 am to arrive
early at Loch Lomond due to a predicted minus tide at the destination, The Shaegers’ came by
Trailer and the Browns came from anchoring at China Camp the night before

Our fleet used up the entire available guest docking without an inch to spare. We attended Loch
Lomond YC’s Friday night $5 hamburger feed and were treated to a wonderful demonstration of
Irish folk dancing. Saturday night everyone became Irish and joined the Corn Beef and Cab-
bage dinner at the yacht club. The festivities included a Folk/Rock Band and a potato carving
contest. As always Loch Lomond YC held a great party and were wonderful hosts to our club.

Sunday morning we departed on a high ebbing tide which made for a choppy and wet ride with
lots of salt to wash off at home.

Thanks go to Cruise Captain Kurt Stahr for a great job planning and coordinating the cruise.

Attending Boats were:
C King Fun (Agnews’) ; Lady Di (Browns’) ; Why Knot (Newtons’); Lucky Bummer
( Weeks’); Dancing Wolf (Wolfs’) ; JudeezII (Nunans’); Starship (Stahrs’); White Pelican
(Landers’); Betty D (Magoons’); and Big Trailer (Shaegers’)

From your new webmaster - Mike Noonan

First thanks to Phillip Craig who had the foresight to snag the NVYC
domain name(s) for our club during the earliest days, thanks to Bill
Newton's son who originally created the site, and a big thank you to Scott
Brown for having the current website, NVYC.org, re-built from scratch and
directing the maintenance of same for these past few years. He used
Marketing Wizards, a firm here in Napa, to do the programming and
maintenance work. All of these people have generously donated time and
dollars to the funding of the site.

But we need to change this. We can't continue to get something for
nothing, and we need to be able to make changes to the site's data
ourselves rather than sending most changes to the Wizards for
reprogramming. My goal is to give the various Staff Captains the
templates needed to be able to set up the data, in plain text,
and then send it to me for loading it up to the website.

On the whole, NVYC.org has a great look to it, and I think it holds up
well when compared to other yacht club sites. Part of our website is open
to the general public, including signing up for our cruises, and part of
the site is for members-only.

I have reviewed all the pages for content, consistency, errors, ease of
access, ease of changing, etc. and have come up with a proposal for
enhancements. Like our boats, our site needs maintenance too.

But first I seek your input. If you will answer some or all of these
questions and e-mail them to me ([email protected]), I would appreciate
your time and opinions.

Go to www.nvyc.org and navigate the various pages. If you don't know the
login id and/or password call me at 707-224-3647. [I'm not comfortable
including this security information in this publication.]

- Do you know about the existence of the NVYC.org website?
- Do you know the members-only user-id and password?
- Did you know that you can get all the club's organization documents from
the website?
- What is the frequency with which you access the website?
none, 1 or 2 times per year, once a month, more that once a month
*If none, or 1 or 2 times per year, why so little?
*What feature(s) do you use the most?
- *What is the most useful part?
- *What is the least useful part?
- *What would you like changed?
- *What would you like added?
(* Please be specific)

I look forward to your responses by April 17th so that we may proceed with
the enhancements. However, ideas are always welcome at any time.

Thanks and good boating.
Mike Noonan

RE: AB2110 – Support

Dear Assembly Member Duvall:

This is to express my support for AB 2110, boating safety legislation you have
introduced on behalf of RBOC to phase-in a requirement that operators of ves-
sels propelled by engines pass a one-time, state-approved test and have a card
with them. I appreciate your efforts in authoring this measure and leading this
effort in the State Legislature.

AB 2110 will enhance safety on the waterways by ensuring that individuals have
the necessary knowledge on the laws and regulations that apply to the operation
of vessels, through certification, in order to reduce accidents, injuries and fatali-
ties.

I also appreciate the manner in which the certification program would be a
streamlined process that avoids the creation of a bloated new government bu-
reaucracy, and minimizes ay costs to be borne by boaters. The state Department
of Boating and Waterways [DBW] is the correct agency to oversee the certifica-
tion of boat operators.

Thank you for authoring this important measure.

Sincerely,
