The Chalice

Like A Little Child
As a young child, I remember telling my aunt “I wish I was a grown up.” She told me to enjoy being a child because when you become a grown up you had to pay bills and make all kinds of hard decisions. I have remembered that my entire life. I understood what she was saying once I had to make all those decisions. It can be very overwhelming. As an adult, one day while running my “mom” taxi, I made a remark about the flowers and wondered what made them so beautiful. My daughter, Jenna, just matter of factly said “Mom, God made them that way.” Wow, to be like a little child. A friend told me one time that she didn’t know what to tell her child when

they had lost a loved one. When she finally got the courage and told them, their response was “Mom, don’t worry, I will see them again in heaven.” It just makes you stop and wonder…to be like a little child. When attending training for Children Worship and Wonder, the story of Jesus and the Children was told. While watching the story and reading the verse in the Gospel of Luke, I realized even though we are all children of God, what does it mean to be “like a little child.” He tells us that to get into heaven, we must receive Him like a little child. I wonder…do you remember what it is to be “like a little child?” As we come to worship this Sunday, on Children’s Sunday, leave your grown up self at home. Come like a little child to worship God with total dependence, full trust, frank openness, and complete sincerity.

Sunday, April 28 12pm Noon Fellowship Hall and Family Life Center
As First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we continually seek ways to serve others both within our own community and beyond. One of the ministries we support is Week of Compassion (WOC). (WOC is the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). WOC seeks to equip and empower disciples to alleviate the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and promotions of mission opportunities.) Week of Compassion has challenged Disciples Churches to become a part of the “Circle of Compassion” - 100 Disciples Churches to raise $10,000 for the endowment fund for Week of Compassion. First Christian Edmond has accepted this challenge! We are hosting a dinner and an auction event on Sunday, April 28, in the Fellowship Hall and Family Life Center to support the “Circle of Compassion” endeavor. Tickets are on sale now: $5 for each person (children under 5 are free.) Please join us on Sunday, April 28, at noon for a delicious lunch. In the 1950’s a group of individuals formed a ministry to raise funds and build the Oklahoma Christian Retirement Community (OCRC) or the Oklahoma Christian Home as it was commonly known. This ministry provided care to retired individuals who had faithfully served the church. Edmond First Christian continues to support this ministry as a number of our members are long-time residents. Today there are over 30 individuals residing in Bradford Village, Edmond’s former OCRC, who may need future financial assistance. The Disciples Retirement Community of Oklahoma (DRCO), formed in 2005, is working to provide future benevolent needs. The DRCO board envisions a healthcare ministry that would embrace caring for Disciples of Christ senior adults across Oklahoma. In January 2013, the Care Partners Ministry was formed. Donations and grants are needed to fund this ministry as plans develop to model it after two best practices programs: “Caregiver-to-Caregiver Network” by Southern Caregiver Resource Center in San Diego, CA, and “Caregiving Team” by Interfaith CarePartners in Houston, TX. The Care Partners Ministry is a collaborative ministry serving Oklahoma’s elderly, extremely ill, physically/mentally challenged and their caregivers. This ministry helps seniors maintain their independence and helps caregivers focus on the importance of self-care. Teams of trained volunteers help the individual or caregiver access community resources, provide services, assist in self-care, and are a listening ear. Volunteers respond uniquely to the Care Partner’s needs, while relying on the power and support of the overall team. Volunteers are being sought from DOC congregations across OK. This is an exciting time for the DRCO and the Christian Church in Oklahoma. Please prayerfully consider financially supporting this new ministry. For those already contributing, the DRCO expresses gratitude. For more information and updates, contact Rev. Devon McAnally, Associate Regional Pastor for Health Care Advocacy, at [email protected] or visit www.okdiscipleshealth.org Contributions may be mailed to: DRCO 301 NW 36th Street, OKC, OK 73118.
