The Chalice

Circle of Compassion
By Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister
This Sunday will be an exciting day for our church family. First of all, we have one unified service at 10:45am. For those who have attended unified services in the past, you know that it is very inspiring for all of us to gather together as a church family in one service. The singing, the Spirit of worship and the whole atmosphere is dynamic. For your information, we have four unified services every year. Since we have 3 different services—the traditional and more informal 8:15 service, the contemporary 9:00 and the traditional 11:00 service that meet different tastes in our congregation—we limit the number of times we gather for one service. But we do enjoy meeting as one family on those occasions. The second joy of this Sunday will be the Circle of Compassion lunch that will take place immediately following our worship. The Circle of Compassion is the endowment that benefits our Week of Compassion. Remember that Week of Compassion is our Disciples fund that reaches out to communities in tragedy. For instance, this week there has been a tremendous response to the horrible explosion in West, Texas. The First Christian Church of Rowlett has been collecting material to bring down to West to help out. And our Week of Compassion offering money is already there, assisting those whose lives have been devastated by the explosion. The Circle of Compassion is a group of churches that have pledged $10,000 to the WOC endowment fund. The intent is that the proceeds from that fund will provide enough funding to WOC that their administrative costs are covered and for additional money to go to help people in need. In other words, 100% of your money given to WOC will aid our brothers and sisters who are suffering. Our lunch on Sunday is a fundraiser for the Circle and our goal is $10,000. We already have some funds

committed—our children’s ministry did their “Penny Drive” and raised almost $700—in pennies! So in addition to our meal—a bargain at $5—we will have many auction items available for you to purchase. There will be both a silent and a live auction. These auctions have always been a blast here in the past. Frank Gresh and Mark Nash will be our auctioneers and will be offering many items, from catered meals to massages, Jazz Lab tickets, jewelry, piano lessons, OU and OSU paraphernalia, there is even a children’s table with goodies for the kids like Beanie Babies and (get ready for this) a 12 volt Silver Mercedes Benz G Child’s Car! Parents, get ready to bid on that one! The meal is being catered by our own Russell Kious. Those of you who have eaten his feasts in the past will not be disappointed as he is working his magic once again. The theme is international and there will be four food stations featuring an international feast of Italian, Oriental (complete with Sushi!), Mexican and, of course, Oklahoma BBQ! So come and enjoy the party and raise money for a very worthy cause.

Circle of Compassion Dinner and Auction
THIS Sunday, April 28 12pm Noon Fellowship Hall and Family Life Center
As First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we continually seek ways to serve others both within our own community and beyond. One of the ministries we support is Week of Compassion (WOC). (WOC is the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). WOC seeks to equip and empower disciples to alleviate the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and promotions of mission opportunities.) Week of Compassion has challenged Disciples Churches to become a part of the “Circle of Compassion” - 100 Disciples Churches to raise $10,000 for the endowment fund for Week of Compassion. First Christian Edmond has accepted this challenge! We are hosting a dinner and an auction event this coming Sunday, April 28, in the Fellowship Hall and Family Life Center to support the “Circle of Compassion” endeavor. Tickets are on sale now and will be at the door: $5 for each person (children under 5 are free.) Please join us this Sunday, April 28, at noon for a delicious lunch. After lunch, we will be auctioning off some great items - with both a silent auction and live auction! Come check it out! If you have questions regarding this Sunday’s event, please contact Iris Muno Jordan at 341-3544, ext. 110.

Want to Help? Want to Volunteer? Want to Participate in a Worthy Ministry? Here are some wonderful opportunities for you...
CW&W Greeters Needed
Children Worship and Wonder will begin offering a service during the 9:00 am worship time. We are in need of Greeters. Greeters assist with welcoming, mentoring and guiding the children through the worship experience. There will be training for CW&W Greeters on Sunday, May 5, and Sunday, May 19, following the 11:00 am service. We need at least 12 wonderful individuals to start with so that the rotation would only require volunteers to greet once each month. If you love working with children, this is the perfect ministry for you! Email Michelle at [email protected] or call 341-3544 to sign up for training.
