HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Varied reasons for coaching shuffle
Some lured by a new
challenge; others find
ideal job opportunity
By MEGAN RYAN
Staff Writer
[email protected]
After 15 years at Decatur,
Kyle Story was ready for a challenge.
Building a football team
from scratch at new Frisco Independence is certainly that.
Story is one of several
coaches occupying new posts,
whether at a new school, an alma mater or first-ever seasons
at the helm. All took different
paths to the top but face the
same tricky transitions.
Story had to bring together
a senior-less roster boasting
only a handful with varsity experience culled from three other Frisco high schools as well as
out-of-state newcomers.
“I’ve always wanted that
challenge of opening up a new
high school and kind of putting
your stamp on it,” Story said.
While Story decided to
move after his kids went to college, new Grapevine coach
Randy Jackson left Plano East
after one season so his children
wouldn’t have to move in high
school.
Plano schools have separate
schools for underclassmen and
upperclassmen, to which Jackson never adjusted.
“I just couldn’t wrap my
brain around not having nine
through 12 in one building and
not knowing the freshmen,” he
said. “I’m a relationship person. I just feel like if you’re going to get kids to lay in traffic
for you and all that, then you
better start getting to know
them as ninth graders.”
Jackson’s quick exit seemed
like destiny for new Plano East
coach Joey McCullough. The
former Plano West assistant
Brad Loper/Staff Photographer
Kyle Story jumped at the opportunity to build the Frisco
Independence football program from the ground up. Independence plays its first game Friday at Princeton.
went up against Jackson for the
position a year ago and lost out.
“I wanted it last year, but
like I told our players when I
first talked to them, there’s a lot
of lessons in life that can be
learned from it,” McCullough
said. “I was disappointed, but
at the same time, I didn’t get
bitter. I just tried to get better.”
Now the first-time head
coach is living out his dream of
leading his alma mater.
It’s a bit like coming home
for former White Oak coach
Gerry Stanford as well. The
new Flower Mound Marcus
coach lived in the Colleyville
area for 20 years.
“I’m real familiar with everybody and the kids, having
kind of always been around
Marcus football either coaching against them or playing
against Marcus throughout my
childhood,” Stanford said.
Ryan Cox and Mike DeWitt
had easier switches — both
were promoted from defensive
coordinator at Lovejoy and
Coppell, respectively. Matt
Green moved on to Marble
Falls after two seasons at Lovejoy while Joe McBride shocked
many by packing up at Coppell
for Dripping Springs.
DeWitt said McBride told
him of his departure on a
Wednesday, and he was interviewing for the job by Friday.
Everything was done in a week.
“If you had told me I’d be a
head coach at Coppell, I would
have probably laughed just because this is a top program in
the state,” DeWitt said. “This is
not a job you get if you’ve never
been a head coach.”
While DeWitt said he was
content where he was and
hadn’t been seeking head
coaching jobs, Cox said his situation is a dream come true.
“I told the kids the other day
that I appreciate them, I thank
them for letting me live my
dream,” Cox said. “That’s the
only thing I’ve ever wanted to
be is a head football coach. …
Most kids say fireman and doctors and police officer and all
this other stuff. I wanted to
coach football.”
