BRIEFS

PATRIOTS 27, JETS 25

Pats block Jets’ upset bid

Decision due soon
on Goodell testimony

NY loses sixth in a row
as 58-yard attempt on
final play is rejected
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. —
Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes, and the New
England Patriots held off the
New York Jets 27-25 when
Nick Folk’s 58-yard field goal
attempt was blocked on the
last play Thursday night.
The surprisingly competitive Jets suffered their sixth
straight loss after taking a 19-17
lead with just under 9 minutes
left in the third quarter on
Chris Ivory’s 1-yard run.
Stephen Gostkowski put
the Patriots (5-2) ahead to stay
with his second field goal, a 36yarder with 4:10 to go in the
third. Brady’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Danny Amendola gave them an eight-point
lead with 4:10 remaining.
The Jets (1-6) made it 27-25
on Geno Smith’s 10-yard scoring pass to Jeff Cumberland
with 2:31 left, but Smith’s pass
for the 2-point conversion was
incomplete.
Ivory had 107 yards rushing.
The Jets kept it close with
four field goals by Folk in the
first half.
The Jets gained 301 yards
through three quarters against
the Patriots’ weary defense,
reaching deep into New England territory on every drive
before finally crossing the goal
line on Ivory’s 1-yard dive to
give New York a 19-17 lead with
8:58 left in the third quarter.
Geno Smith completed 3 of
4 for 39 yards during the 80yard drive, recovering from a
sloppy second quarter when he
was 1 of 5 for a yard.
The Patriots regained the
lead (20-19) on Stephen Gostkowski’s second field goal of
the night, a 36-yarder from 36yards.

Chris Ivory, who rushed for 107 yards, is knocked out of bounds short of the goal line in the
third quarter. He scored on a 1-yard run for the first of the Jets’ two touchdowns.

A neutral arbiter is expected to decide early next week
whether NFL Commissioner
Roger Goodell should testify
during an appeal of Ray Rice’s indefinite suspension, a
person familiar with the case
told The Associated Press on
Thursday.
Goodell said last week
he’d leave the decision to former U.S. District Judge Barbara S. Jones. She was picked
by the commissioner and the
players’ union to hear Rice’s
appeal earlier this month.
The hearing is tentatively set
for November.
“I think Judge Jones is the
one who ultimately is going
to make the rules and determinations,” Goodell said at
the owners’ meetings in New
York.

about his availability for
Sunday’s game at Green Bay.
Coach Ron Rivera said after practice the standout
rookie is in the concussion
protocol and will meet with
independent doctors Friday
to determine if he’s ready to
play against the Packers. Rivera said it’s unclear when
he’ll make a decision on Benjamin’s status.
If Benjamin can’t play,
Rivera said it would be a
“considerable” loss for the offense “in light of who he is for
us.”
The first-round draft pick
from Florida State has
emerged as Carolina’s best
wide receiver. He leads all
rookies with 416 yards receiving on 31 catches, including four touchdowns. Only
tight end Greg Olsen has
more receptions than Benjamin for the Panthers.

Bucs fire executive
after arrest for DUI

EAST RUTHERFORD,
N.J. — New York Giants
might not have top cornerback Dominique RodgersCromartie, who is battling a
back and hamstring issue,
for Sunday’s game against
the Cowboys. But middle
linebacker Jon Beason has
seemed to recover enough
from his foot and toe issues
to be able to play.
Running back Rashad
Jennings, nursing a sprained
knee, is definitely out of Sunday’s game and will not travel
with the team. That leaves
the brunt of the Giants rushing chores on the shoulders
of rookie Andre Williams (71
carries, 229 yards, two TDs).

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired director of player development
Isaiah Harris on Thursday
after he was arrested for
driving under the influence.
The 35-year-old Harris
was in his first year with the
team.
Harris was arrested on a
misdemeanor DUI charge
and released on $500 bond.
He worked in the Bears’
front office when current
Bucs coach Lovie Smith
coached in Chicago.

Panthers’ Benjamin
might miss game
CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Panthers rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin missed
his second straight day of
practice Thursday with a
concussion, raising concerns

Pats’ Ridley, Mayo
out for season
FOXBOROUGH, Mass.
— The New England
Patriots placed linebacker
Jerod Mayo and running
back Stevan Ridley on injured reserve, ending their
seasons.
Both players damaged
their right knees in last Sunday’s victory at Buffalo.
