Another Great Bay Cruise

Having just returned from the Bay Cruise, my “boating batteries” have been recharged. We had a great time with the assembled fleet. My nomination this month for one who promotes Camaraderie on the Water is Fleet Captain Scott Brown. Scott has served as Fleet Captain multiple times. He was tested somewhat on this latest trip as we started out with two days of wind that scrambled the schedule. But he made phone calls and passed on the info of plans “B” and “C” that kept the cruise flowing. His efforts were greatly appreciated and the result was some great fun on the water. See Scott’s Trip Report and some of the associated pictures in this issue. The October NVYC Board meeting was a week later than usual due to the cruise. It was a busy meeting and some significant actions were taken: The committee working on the lease with the City presented a draft document that meets the club’s needs and contains most of the language drafted by the City. The Board action was to authorize the Commodore to send this version to the City with the message that we are prepared to sign this document. Hopefully, this will eliminate further “additions” by our landlord. After much work, we are very close to obtaining the long term lease that has been our goal for some time now. Many thanks to current committee members Clay Parker, Larry Wolfe, Avi Strugo and Steve Vartan and the many folks before us that have also worked on this issue. There has been a lot of work toward the deck project too. Unfortunately, it has not succeeded in navigating all the hoops of a City Building Permit as yet. Review of our plan brought the following issues: 1) necessary compliance with FEMA regulations which means another water surface model effort for the City. This is underway. 2) Necessary compliance with Accessibility Standards. This means a paved accessible parking place and a ramp onto the deck. Plans will be adjusted to show this. 3) Bringing our restroom facility to Accessibility Standards. This one is more involved as we have to both figure out what we can do in the space available and look ahead to the long term need for facilities. Steve Vartan has agreed to draw up some ideas for discussion. 4) The work window for earthwork on the bank of the river has closed and will not reopen until after the rainy season. Translation: we have some time to solve the first 3 items. New member Chris Fultz is also working with the design engineer and will prepare a material take off so that a budget can be established for this project. The above points out that the road to a deck is not smooth but we are persistent and plan to be ready for an early spring construction. Don’t forget to greet our new members, and better yet, bring a prospective member!

There are a myriad of things going on at our club we need to note in this month’s epistle. By the time you receive this we may have already had the Halloween event at the club! Friday, October 31st is a regular dinner spice up with costumes and prizes. You have probably seen the flyers Ellen Vartan was kind enough to create, so get out the costumes and join us for a fun evening and a wonderful dinner! There will be an “opportunity drawing” to help our Senior Project headed up by Karen Agnew and with Lovely Ladies from our club. Karen needs to have everyone save toiletries you get at hotels, etc. when you travel. The Ladies put them in baskets for the Seniors along with other goodies. They are really appreciated and make a big difference to the folks we serve. Please note the enclosure in this month’s newsletter about the hosts for our dinners. It is in the Operating Documents you received when you joined, but presented here, again, to refresh memories. Hosts should always contact the OD Coordinator prior to your event to get keys, instructions on how to open and close the building and what to do with cash and expense receipts. The OD Coordinator this year is Linda Sharp, 226-7488, [email protected]. Our Treasurer, Jim Robbers, indicates the procedures have been slipping and we need to get back to the established process needed for proper accounting. Have a safe and fun time on the water and join us at the club!
WHAT A GREAT past month. On September 19 we began the Marin/Blue Water Cruise. First stop was the Marin Yacht Club for two nights. The Friday night dinner at the club was a prime rib dinner. It was some of the best prime rib I have ever had. Saturday, Scott Brown arranged for a picnic lunch at China Camp State Park. What a beautiful day. Pictures were in last month’s newsletter. Sunday seven boats went under the Golden Gate Bridge, destination—Half Moon Bay. The Half Moon Bay marina was a beehive of activity of fishing boats selling their catch to the public on the docks. The next day we were off to Santa Cruz. The weather was perfect. After arriving, all seven boats rafted up to the guest dock. There was plenty of time for sight seeing and shopping. After two wonderful days it was back to Half Moon Bay, were we were invited to the Half Moon Yacht Club and like our club we met some of the friendliest folks you would ever want to meet. They were very excited about t ehe ground breaking for the following Wednesday for their new club house expansion. We left the next morning in the FOG. About two miles from the Golden Gate Bridge, the fog lifted----WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT. The Fleet Week Cruise was scheduled to start on Friday, October 10. However the winds came up and most of our group came into Vallejo on Friday and left for Sausalito on Sunday. Eight boats docked at Schoonmaker Marina. The weather was great and the air show terrific. Our boat, Dancing Wolf, anchored off of Alcatraz to watch the planes. Monday we awoke to the terrible sight of Angel Island burning. The cruise left Tuesday for Coyote Point Marina. Scott Brown, we can’t thank you enough for the great time and all the great times on this year’s cruises. P.S. Scott has asked if I would take on the New Year’s cruise to South Beach. Let me know your ideas. (I hope I don’t screw it up.)

Senior Program I can hardly believe it is time to activate the Senior Program. Where the heck did the year go. As you have heard, via Clay, this year we are going to include soaps, shampoos, etc. that we have all collected over the year. Our recipients wait for us each year, and they talk among themselves, so we have to be careful to do the same for all. I have a donation of small gift bags this year, so we will be putting items in them. We will be making about 75 bags so if anyone has any items they would like to include, please make sure you have at least 75 of the same/like things. I had thought of including sparkling cider in each bag, but realized it would take over 6 cases to have enough. If I have a little extra left from the donated cash, I will still do this. And of course there are the small stuffed bears [and beany babies], thanx to Kathy Nord and Jackie Finnegan. We have a few seniors who look to see what the animal is before checking the rest. We will meet on Monday, December 8th, at the Yacht Club at 9:30. As some of you know, I have heard from Vallegra's that over $1700 dollars of past gift certificates have not been redeemed. To make sure we have a tracking record, so we can help those who have not redeemed their gift, we will have to take extra time to post a gift number with a name, so allow a little extra time for Monday morning. Please let we know if you can make Monday to construct bags and deliver, or if you will only be able to make deliveries. All who participate in this program come away with a wonderful feeling. It is all of you members whom have made this such a big success. Joyce Craven & Jim Robbers have called me to say they are getting free Xmas cards in the mail, and can I use them? YES bring extra Xmas cards, and we will included them in the gift bags. Any ideas, just Remember we need at least 75 of each item, so all bags are the same Thanks in advance for your help and contributions. Be sure to make the check out to the Volunteer Center of Napa. Karen Agnew, Senior Christmas Program

Fleet Week 2008 Friday: Our Fleet Week cruise had an uncertain beginning when the day before we received a call from Schoonmaker Marina in Sausalito cancelling our first stop due to high northerly winds in the Richardson Bay. We quickly formulated plan B and the majority of our fleet went to Vallejo that easily accommodated us on K dock. Boats there were Starship, Lady Di, Cking Fun, White Pelican, White Cloud, Feisty Lady and Elsinor. Docking in the high winds was more than exciting especially for our new comer White Wave. (Toru it’s usually easier, Really!) Cocktails on Starship and later everyone joined together for a wonderful dinner at Zeo Friedos. We were amazed at the great meal at a great price. Saturday: Several of us hopped on the Bay Link Ferry to San Francisco to the Ferry Building and then on the F bus to Pier 39 to join the 1,000s of others for the spectacular air show. The weather was more than wonderful. We jumped back on the 3:40 ferry home which also gave us a wonderful, on the water, view of all the fleet week activities. Sunday: White Wave left for home. This was the first cruise out for Toru and Sumiko Manabe and we enjoyed their company. The wind picture seemed to be improving and with a tentative nod from the assistant harbormaster at Schoonmaker the fleet cast off our lines on Sunday morning for Sausalito. The bay was still choppy and rolling on the way there. The 300+ foot sailing vessel Maltese Falcon was anchored just Outside of Richardson’s Bay. What a site! At Schoonmaker we were joined by Grand Cru and Dancing Wolf. Unfortunately the North winds came up again making docking difficult. Starship was tied up ok but the was being bashed on the docks and had to be resituated (Dominique was much happier). As always everyone helps everyone and soon all were safely docked. Apparently the Asst Harbormaster and the Harbor master did not talk and they were a little surprised to see us but with the smaller fleet it worked out perfectly. We wound up the day with a beautiful sunset and dock party at the Lady Di. Later that night the Angel Island fire lit up the sky. Monday We mended all fences with our Harbormaster and decided to stay an extra day in Sausalito which also brought back the scheduled ableskivver and mimosa breakfast on the CKing Fun. Helping with the breakfast were Why Knot. Why Knot and Strange Trip were rumored to be at the Corinthian Yacht Club. Anyway we called our friends at Coyote Point. We were hoping that they would let us come a day late and have an extra day. As it turned out it gave them an opportunity to extend an event that was going on there. Amazing how things work out. Our stay here in Sausalito is wonderful with perfect weather. We biked and kayaked, collectively, made several trips to West Marine, and generally hung out. There was a great cocktail party on Dancing Wolf and then on to dinner at the new French restaurant on the wharf just next to us. Tuesday: Dancing Wolf left for home and the rest of the fleet is off to Coyote Point Marina and Yacht Club. What a great sail down on calm sunny waters. We were joined by Bob and Nancy Weeks by car. Bob had volunteered to cook dinner for us. CPYC let us use the barbeques and the club house for our event and that night we had a delicious barbequed tri tip dinner. Wednesday: Still at CPYC and just hanging out. There is lots to do here. We explored the Bay Trail and several of us went to a nature and wildlife museum close by. Thursday: Grand Cru left directly to San Franciso and Elsinor headed for home to prepare the Club dinner on Friday night; The remaining fleet (we are now 5 boats) Starship, Lady Di, Cking Fun, White Pelican, and Feisty Lady left for Oyster Point Marina and Yacht Club. The weather was unusually calm and we didn’t need to worry about wind today. This was our clubs first visit to Oyster Point. They opened the club for us and cooked a dinner especially for us. The general area is a huge basin with 3 Marinas and was situated on the Bay Trail that provided lots of biking or walking opportunity. Friday-Saturday: We cast off lines headed for South Beach Marina at San Francisco. Today is also warm with no winds. We join Grand Cru at South Beach and now are fleet is 6 strong. We enjoyed the most wonderful Days in San Francisco with temperatures in the 80’s and no wind. Our farewell cocktail party Saturday evening was on the Starship where the digital photos taken by everyone during the week were displayed on the big screen. Sunday: Everyone is off the docks between 8 and 10 with smooth seas for the trip home.

An update from Alan & Kristen Spence

Sunday Morning, November 2, 13:00 Well, we left Nuku'alofa this morning at 11:15 and are now on our way to New Zealand. We are planning to stop at Minerva Reef, which is 250 miles from here and reevaluate the weather at that point. We will decide to either hang out for a few days, or maybe not stop at all. We have been studying the weather, to the point of "analysis paralysis" and finally decided this morning to jump. We are not using a weather router, though we will be checking in daily with Des of Opua Offshore and he will let us know what to expect for the next day or so. Most of our friends (none of whom left this morning) are using weather routers, though everyone who does constantly complains about them. We will be in radio contact with folks who are getting the professional advice and have that information available. We have been looking forward to this passage with some anxiety for a long time now and the time is finally here. There are about 40 boats now at Pangaimotu, where we've been anchored for 9 days, about 8 boats left this morning. Rick on Morning Star is our only close friend who left with us. He is single handing, while Terri is taking care of final details from her mom's death and for their house. Rick actually left last week from Vava'u, but turned back after his sail ripped in a squall. Meridian (from Napa) also had gear failure in the same squall and also turned back. Yesterday, we had a scare when the generator started and ran fine, but was not producing any electricity. I got Steve on Orca III to look at it with me and we found a broken wire. All is now well. Without the generator, we do not have a refrigerator or a watermaker. We were quite pleased to have it operating again by the end of the day. Anyway, we will keep you apprised of our progress and covet your prayers. Alan and Kristen s/v Charisma
