College Football Playoff Watch

PRESENTED BY

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

Bill Nichols
SATURDAY’S NOTABLE GAMES

Travis Wilson, QB, Utah
4. Oregon at 17. Utah (+81⁄2), 9 p.m. (ESPN):
The Utes’ defense might hang
with the prolific Ducks but
will need Wilson’s best for an
upset. Despite his inconsistency, he is capable of burning Oregon’s suspect secondary. Oregon 42, Utah 30.

Panel doesn’t punish slow starters
The latest College Football
Playoff rankings teach us that it’s
OK to struggle and win ugly — as
long as you do so against a quality opponent.
Florida State needed a late
rally, overcoming a 21-point defi-

cit to beat then-No. 25 Louisville, 42-31, on the road and
maintain the No. 2 rank.
No. 3 Auburn trailed by 10 on
the road against then-No. 4 Ole
Miss, but got two big drives and
two fumbles for a 35-31 victory.

The Dallas Morning News

The Tigers stayed No. 3.
Mississippi State maintained
the No. 1 position after overcoming a 10-point deficit against unranked Arkansas, 17-10. And after trailing West Virginia by 13
on the road, TCU won on the fi-

12. Baylor (+51⁄2) at 15. Oklahoma

nal play for a 31-30 win that improved the Horned Frogs one
spot to No. 6.

Cassanova McKinzy, LB, Auburn
Texas A&M (+211⁄2) at 3. Auburn, 2:30 p.m. (Ch.
11): The middle linebacker has 52 tackles,
including a team-high 8 for loss. His fumble
recovery in the end zone against Ole Miss
basically saved Auburn’s playoff hopes. Auburn 44, Texas A&M 17.

Junior WR Josh Doctson
leads TCU with 38 catches
and 602 yards and shares
the lead with seven
receiving touchdowns.

11 a.m. (Fox 1): The Bears have the tiebreaker edge over TCU in
the Big 12 standings but trail the Frogs by six spots in the playoff standings. Their best win, 61-58 over TCU, was negated by
their loss at West Virginia. The Sooners need a victory to stay
in the Big 12 hunt. Baylor 34, Oklahoma 27.

3. Clint Trickett, QB, W. Virginia
23. West Virginia at Texas (+31⁄2), 2:30 p.m.
(Fox 1): Trickett threw for only 161 yards, albeit
in wind and rain, in last week’s loss to TCU.
But that was only his second game with fewer
than 300 yards passing. West Virginia 27,
Texas 23.

7. Kansas State (+6) at 6. TCU
6:30 p.m. (Ch. 4): The teams seem as closely matched as their
rankings. Both won big over Big 12 opponents Texas Tech and
Oklahoma State, and both won dramatically over Oklahoma.
Kansas State’s lone loss was to then-No. 5 Auburn (20-14) and
TCU’s to then-No. Baylor (61-58). TCU 37, K-State 34.

UPSET SPECIAL
SMU (+121⁄2) at Tulsa

5. Alabama at 16. LSU (+6 ⁄2)
1

11 a.m. (CBSSN): The Mustangs (0-7) rank at or
near the bottom of many key statistical categories. But they have had an extra week to
prepare for a team that has lost seven straight
games, same as they have. SMU 23, Tulsa 20.

7 p.m. (Ch. 11): LSU’s strength is rushing; Alabama ranks second
nationally in rushing defense. The Tide controls their playoff
destiny, with games against Mississippi State and Auburn, but
have struggled on the road. And the Tigers are 46-4 in night
games at home under Les Miles. Alabama 24, LSU 23.

STATEMENT GAME

14. Ohio State (+31⁄2) at 8. Mich. State
7 p.m. (Ch. 8): Ohio State ranks fourth nationally at 45.6 points
per game, one spot ahead of Michigan State (45.5). The Spartans have not lost a Big Ten game since November 2012. Buckeyes QB J.T. Barrett of Wichita Falls has completed 65 percent
of his passes with 23 TDs. Mich. State 36, Ohio State 33.

10. N.Dame (+21⁄2) at 9. Ariz. St.
2:30 p.m. (Ch. 8): Each needs a quality win.
The Sun Devils leapfrogged Notre Dame with
last week’s dramatic win over Utah. The Irish’s
only loss was to No. 2 Florida State, but their
best win was a squeaker over Stanford. Arizona State 38, Notre Dame 30.

Line through Tuesday. LAST WEEK: 6-3 straight, 58-32 vs. line. SEASON: 4-5 straight, 53-37 vs. line.
