Tech, Baylor plan
four-year extension
Texas Tech and Baylor are
in the final stages of extending their football series at
AT&T Stadium for another
four seasons.
Baylor school officials and
Tech athletic director Kirby
Hocutt confirmed Thursday
evening that the schools are
close to a deal through the
2018 season. This marks the
final year in the current contract. The two schools began
playing in Arlington in 2009.
Hocutt told the Lubbock
Avalanche-Journal the game
would be played Thanksgiving weekend in 2016 and ’18,
when Tech would normally
have hosted Baylor in Lubbock without students on
campus. In odd numbered
years, Tech will play at Texas
on Thanksgiving week, Hocutt said.

Texas A&M announced in
September that it had awarded men's basketball coach
Billy Kennedy a two-year
contract extension, through
2018. SportsDay obtained the
new agreement Thursday
through an open records request, and the extra two years
appear mostly cosmetic.
Kennedy will have no
buyout to pay to A&M, according to the document, if
he chooses to leave after the
2015-2016 season is completed. If he leaves before then of
his own choosing to take another
job,
he'd
owe
$500,000.
If A&M were to fire Kennedy without cause (based on
win-loss record) after this
season, the University would
owe him about $750,000
through May 15, 2016. If he
were to be terminated after
May 15, 2016, A&M has no
obligation to pay him.

Set guidelines would
benefit fans, but parties
happy with status quo

Interscholastic League
realigns its member
schools every two years, coaches and athletic directors from
each new district meet. What
they talk about will differ, but
one subject is always high on
the agenda:
Tiebreakers.
How is our district going to
do it? In ties with three teams
or more, what should be the
maximum game margin counted for point differential? Will
point differential include just
positive points for a win or also
negative points for a loss? After
a team is eliminated on point
differential, will the tiebreaker
stay points or go back to headto-head results? At what point
will we go to a coin flip?
“When we all come together
in the February meeting,” Mesquite ISD athletic director
Steve Bragg said, “we want to
make sure everyone is clear on
the tiebreakers and how we’re
going to interpret them.”
That clarity often turns
cloudy late in the football season. Over the last two weeks,
coaches and athletic directors
have been talking back and
forth, hashing out what happens in the cases of three, four,
five or even six teams being tied
in the standings. Bragg, who

schools in 10-6A, has been knee
deep in what-if scenarios.
“You don’t want to get to after Week 10 and people aren’t
clear on the wording,” Bragg
said. “You don’t want a lot of
conflict after the fact, so you
want to be proactive.”
What would be the most
proactive move?
Having the UIL create uniform tiebreaker rules. Instead
of each realigned district discussing and drafting its own
tiebreaker rules every two
years, the rules would stay the
same.
It would be less work for the
coaches and athletic directors.
And instead of fans — and yes,
sports writers — wondering
about the rules for a particular
district, the rules would be
clear across the board.
But there’s not a strong push
for the UIL to do it. No push at
all, apparently.
“I’ve been here in some form
or fashion for 20 years,” UIL
athletic director Mark Cousins
said, “and there hasn’t been any
interest, or very little, in having
the UIL determine the tiebreakers.”
The UIL does have a playoff
tiebreaker rule for football and
other sports, which districts
can use if they don’t create their
own rules. I don’t know of a
Dallas-area district that uses
the UIL rules, and that’s no
surprise considering the UIL
rules ignore point differential
and go to the dreaded coin flip
if a tie can’t be broken by headto-head results.
Most local coaches and athletic directors don’t mind creating their own playoff tiebreakers, perhaps because it al-
lows them to retain more control over their teams. (Some
coaches still grumble about the
UIL taking away their power to
choose the time and venue of
the championship games).
The UIL doesn’t want to
handle the tiebreakers, either.
With the districts creating
their own tiebreakers, the UIL
can direct disputes about playoff qualifiers and seeding back
to the district executive committees.
It isn’t important who creates the tiebreaker rules, most
coaches say. As long as they
know the rules ahead of time,
they can make their plans.
And because we’re talking
about tiebreakers, we can always plan for a few headaches.

Set guidelines would
benefit fans, but parties
happy with status quo

Interscholastic League
realigns its member
schools every two years, coaches and athletic directors from
each new district meet. What
they talk about will differ, but
one subject is always high on
the agenda:
Tiebreakers.
How is our district going to
do it? In ties with three teams
or more, what should be the
maximum game margin counted for point differential? Will
point differential include just
positive points for a win or also
negative points for a loss? After
a team is eliminated on point
differential, will the tiebreaker
stay points or go back to headto-head results? At what point
will we go to a coin flip?
“When we all come together
in the February meeting,” Mesquite ISD athletic director
Steve Bragg said, “we want to
make sure everyone is clear on
the tiebreakers and how we’re
going to interpret them.”
That clarity often turns
cloudy late in the football season. Over the last two weeks,
coaches and athletic directors
have been talking back and
forth, hashing out what happens in the cases of three, four,
five or even six teams being tied
in the standings. Bragg, who

schools in 10-6A, has been knee
deep in what-if scenarios.
“You don’t want to get to after Week 10 and people aren’t
clear on the wording,” Bragg
said. “You don’t want a lot of
conflict after the fact, so you
want to be proactive.”
What would be the most
proactive move?
Having the UIL create uniform tiebreaker rules. Instead
of each realigned district discussing and drafting its own
tiebreaker rules every two
years, the rules would stay the
same.
It would be less work for the
coaches and athletic directors.
And instead of fans — and yes,
sports writers — wondering
about the rules for a particular
district, the rules would be
clear across the board.
But there’s not a strong push
for the UIL to do it. No push at
all, apparently.
“I’ve been here in some form
or fashion for 20 years,” UIL
athletic director Mark Cousins
said, “and there hasn’t been any
interest, or very little, in having
the UIL determine the tiebreakers.”
The UIL does have a playoff
tiebreaker rule for football and
other sports, which districts
can use if they don’t create their
own rules. I don’t know of a
Dallas-area district that uses
the UIL rules, and that’s no
surprise considering the UIL
rules ignore point differential
and go to the dreaded coin flip
if a tie can’t be broken by headto-head results.
Most local coaches and athletic directors don’t mind creating their own playoff tiebreakers, perhaps because it al-
lows them to retain more control over their teams. (Some
coaches still grumble about the
UIL taking away their power to
choose the time and venue of
the championship games).
The UIL doesn’t want to
handle the tiebreakers, either.
With the districts creating
their own tiebreakers, the UIL
can direct disputes about playoff qualifiers and seeding back
to the district executive committees.
It isn’t important who creates the tiebreaker rules, most
coaches say. As long as they
know the rules ahead of time,
they can make their plans.
And because we’re talking
about tiebreakers, we can always plan for a few headaches.
