From the Campus Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to Term 2! It is fantastic to see our students all back at school and ready for a big term of learning. Term two is a busy time of the year. Our teaching teams met on Monday during the Curriculum Day and have organised an action-packed term for our students in literacy, numeracy and inquiry learning. There are also a number of key events coming up, including cross country for our year 5-8 students, athletics and our choir performance at the new Coles shopping centre in the next few weeks. Next week there will be a public holiday on ANZAC Day (Thursday). The school will be holding an ANZAC Day assembly on Wednesday afternoon at 2:40pm and our community is most welcome to attend. Don’t forget that breakfast club will also continue to run from the canteen each morning. This week our Kinda Kinder program began, with a number of families attending with their preschool children. The program has been running here at Callistemon for two years now and has proven to be really successful. It is a terrific opportunity for parents to bring in their pre-school aged children in to school each Tuesday morning to participate in some fun activities, just like a play group would run. We are supported by Victoria University, who provide a number of undergraduate students to organise weekly activities. If you require further information, please contact Margherita Milotti, our leading teacher who is overseeing the program. During week two, all students across the campus will participate in activities linked to our College values in multi-aged groups. The activity afternoon will take place every second Wednesday during this term and is designed to reinforce the values in a fun way during a variety of activities that our staff organise. We have been really impressed with how well our students have adopted the values, as evidenced by our weekly awards at assembly. Also pleasing has been the response for designs of our new postcards. You can vote for the student-designed postcard of your choice by visiting the College website (http://www.thegrange.vic.edu.au/ ). Don’t forget to keep visiting the website for weekly updates of events and upcoming dates to remember. Also this week, we welcomed our 2014 prospective Prep families to the school with a Prep evening on Tuesday. Parents were able to visit classrooms, talk to staff and ask questions about the year ahead. If you know of a prospective Prep student, please ask their parents to contact the school for an information pack. Throughout the term, we will be hosting a number of student teachers in various classrooms across the campus. We have regularly supported the growth of practising teachers here at The Grange in partnership with many universities. Students are usually here in teaching blocks of a few weeks under the supervision of our experienced classroom teachers and your child may mention a new teacher assistant in their classroom during this time.
Regards,

Peter Knight | Campus Principal

Woolworths Earn & Learn
We have registered once again for the Woolworths Earn and Learn Program. Last year we collected over 57000 tokens and as a result we received over $2000 of wonderful resources, including board games, maths equipment and construction equipment. We want to try and make it to 65000 points this year to get more great resources for our school. You can start collecting stickers and placing

them on reward sheets available at Woolworths from Monday 8th April. You can then place your completed sticker sheets (and encourage your friends to do the same) in the special box in the foyer of the school or in ‘The Grange’ box at Woolworths. You will receive 1 sticker for every $10 spent in store. Thankyou once again for your participation and let’s see if we can work together to achieve our goal. Darryl Spiteri | Assistant Principal - Curriculum

Celebrating Cultural Diversity Schools’ Art Competition
March 2013 – Many students in Victorian schools were given the opportunity to submit Art-work that visually interpreted themes of multiculturalism, citizenship and cultural diversity. Out of hundreds of entries Dhimant Awasthi one of our Grade One students’ work was selected in the final 24 entries eligible for the final prize. All finalists’ work was displayed at Federation Square in the Atrium section and winners were announced March 24th with certificates and first place winners being announced and presented by the Victoria Minister for Multiculturalism - The Hon. Nicholas Kotsiras, MP. While Dhimant was not the outright winner we were very proud of his contribution in being selected in the final 24 entries. He looked so smart in his Grange School Uniform when he accepted his certificate and while he stood with all the other nominees. Well done Dhimant!!!!! This event was attended by Carol Graham, Jane Motley and a very proud Awasthi family!

OFFICE NEWS
Hot Noodles: Students are not to bring cups or bowls of noodles to be made up at school. These are a danger as children can be burned by the hot water. Asthma Information: Viv has displayed some asthma information in the Sick Bay window. Parents are welcome to visit this display.

Regards Kylie, Merilyn, Maureen, Di, Karen and Viv.

Swimming Carnival
On Wednesday the 6th of March, 17 students from our school went to the Wyndham Leisure centre to represent the Grange in the district swimming carnival, and participate in their selected events. All of our students did exceptionally well and tried their absolute best. On behalf of everyone, we would like to give a special mention to Imogen Brown, who qualified for the regionals in 50m butterfly, and to Jasmine Tran for 50m breaststroke. This event was held on Thursday the 14th of March. Imogen and Jasmine both did extremely well just to make it this far. I heard many comments from parents and staff working the event that thought all of our students behaved well and showed great consideration and value for all of the other schools that were participating in the event. Well done and congratulations if you were one of those students who was representing the school.  Written by Emma De Piazza and Sarah Nash.

From the Wellbeing Team

This is a system where selected students are assigned a teacher

mentor. The aim is for these students to feel more supported and engaged with their schooling. This is a proven method for improving behavioural and learning outcomes for students who require a little more support.

This is a simple system whereby yard duty teachers award a “You’re a Star”

sticker (there will be a set in each yard duty pack) to students they see doing the right thing in the yard. Examples of positive behaviours that will be instantly rewarded include; sharing equipment, playing fairly, looking after others, picking up rubbish, and including others.

All Callistemon students have been placed in house

based groups that will participate in fortnightly lessons focusing on personal and group development, whilst learning the college values and expected behaviours. These lessons are designed to be a fun and engaging educational opportunity within small, supportive learning communities.

Kinda Kinder will commence at The Grange P-12 College Callistemon campus as of Tuesday the 16th of April, and will be running for 19 weeks. Research has shown that when children transition to school into a familiar environment, their initial experiences in the prep year is more positive and the children are more ready to engage in learning upon entrance into the school. The Kinda Kinder program is a great opportunity to begin your child’s transition to school, not only in the year prior to school entry but from as early as possible. The longer the child spends in the school environment the more familiar it will be.

Student Injuries At School
The Grange P-12 College has a range of first aid protocols in place to deal with student injuries. These protocols include giving first aid, contacting a parent or other emergency contacts and if necessary, calling an ambulance. For this reason, it is important that parents and guardians ensure that the school always has up to date emergency contact details. DEECD wants parents to be aware of the following information: Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. The department of Education & Early Childhood Development does not hold accident insurance for school students, however reasonably low cost accident insurance policies are available from commercial insurers.

Canteen News
The canteen does not offer credit. Please do not ask as you may be offended when refused. If the canteen has supplied your child with a lunch due to your child forgetting their lunch please ensure that you pay the amount owing. If your child continues to come to school without lunch, the school will contact families and ask you to bring lunch in.

reminder to families

The canteen is often unable to change large notes. Could families please send small denominations to the canteen.

We would also like all families to update their children’s classrooms in their Munch Monitor accounts. Thank you.

Munch Monitor Discount!!!
Beginning Friday 1st March 2013, there will be a 5% discount for all Munch Monitor orders.

The group meets each Monday morning after assembly in the gyms foyer to share a coffee and biscuits, while discussing and planning for school events and to think of new ideas for future events. The coffee and Chat group is a unique opportunity to involve parents/families in the school community and to gather information and support from an important member of the school community; the parents and families. The group has already shown great support for the school with initiatives such as the Mothers and Fathers day stalls and raffles but we would like to look at ways of extending

this relationship between the school, current families and future families and we are looking for more family members to become involve to share their ideas, skills and knowledge. So if there are any Mums, Dads, Grandparents or Carers who would to become involved in the group please come along to our next coffee and Chat group.
