Avatar reveals the shape of Sonatas to come.

Korean korner. Hyundai and Kia press conferences at New York centered on South Korea's economic crisis. But Hyundai finally revealed its Avatar concept that strongly hints at the look of the new Sonata. The Avatar was yanked from the Chicago show at the last minute (AW, Feb. 16). So while we finally saw the Avatar, the new Sonata is out in South Korea already; it has a less distinctive grille than the Avatar. The Sonata also loses the "eyelash" headlights, although the character lines in the fenders and doors remain. The front-end detailing is the substantial difference. We'll give it this much: With its mini-'50s Buick-looking chrome toothed grille, the Avatar concept does not take the safely styled route marking so many midsize cars these days. Meanwhile, Kia introduced the two-door version of its Sportage. And Daewoo, once again, failed to show. Bond's next ride? he BMW 207 concept car will become a 5 Serieslevel sports car, BMW Americana m chief Vic Doolan confiied. The r 207 "will come into production in the not-too-distant future," looking much as it did at Tokyo last year, with the upcoming M5 sedan's 400-plus-hp V8 under its hood, Doolan said. "That would look quite nice next to a Bentley, wouldn't it?" Doolan suggested to a meeting of the Madison Avenue Sports Car Club and Chowder Society. Also in attendance was Dean Miller, the new top man at RollsRoyce of North America. "How much will it cost?" one Chowderhead yelled. "Oh. .. quite a lot," Doolan replied. Doolan said that the new BMW "sports/activity vehicle" will be built alongside the 23 at the Spartanburg, S.C., plant by the end of 1999, and will be available with the M5 engine. Manual transmissions will be available also. He also said that BMW will not share platforms with any of its other brands. Published reports have indi-

Subaru replaces dohc with sohc.

One cam is better than two. Like BMW, Subaru
wants to emphasize its sporting image. At New York, the company unveiled its '99 Impreza 2.5 RS. While it looked much like the '98 2.5 RS, an sohc 2.5-liter boxer four replaces the current dohc 2.5-liter boxer four. How does that enhance Subie's performance image? The boxer four's all-new valvetrain produces less friction than the dohc four, according to Subaru, and the valve angle has been increased for straighter intake passage. The changes in the valvetrain and intake systems result in greater torque in the low- and midranges. The engine makes about the same 165 hp as the dohc; it makes more than the dohc's 162 lb-ft, although Subaru didn't reveal the sohc's exact figures. The '99 RS due in August also has a refined gearbox, for smoother, shorter shifts, plus a new front bumper and fog lights. The Forester probably will get the new engine next. Subaru also showed the 2.5 RX, modified with such aftermarket performance parts as stiffer shocks and springs, fatter antiroll bars, and a performance exhaust.
