KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North COMMUNITY SAFETY MEETING
Police Chief Vern White, Fire Chief John deHooge, Paramedic Chief Anthony Di Monte, Chief of By-Law Services Linda Anderson, and Chief of Integrated Public Safety John Ash will each speak on a panel on Community Safety on Saturday, April 17th starting at 3:30 p.m. in the Mlacak Centre (2500 Campeau Dr.). This is a rare opportunity to meet the key personnel who deal with our safety on a day to day basis. In November of 2009 a Kanata North resident was brutally attacked on his way home from work at the Kanata Signature Centre, while biking home along one of the community pathways. This incident prompted a review of pathway safety in the area and the desire for a community safety meeting dealing with this and other broader safety issues as a whole. The meeting is being held to receive feedback on safety issues from members of the community and to provide information on what is being done by the City to improve our safety. The meeting will involve an open house, the panel discussion, and breakout groups to discuss the issues and come up with recommendations for action. All present will be sent a report from my office highlighting key concerns and actions items. The open house will have more than a dozen information tables. Those invited include policing, neighbourhood watch, traffic safety, fire, paramedic, by-law, public safety and emergency management, corporate security, school crossing guards, OC Transpo, community lighting, cycling and pedestrian safety, youth on the move and the Resource Centre. Help make your community safer and join me on April 17th to make a difference. .

WALK WITH ME FOR WORLD HEALTH DAY
World Health Day is being celebrated between Apr. 7th and 11th this year. To demonstrate a healthy activity in Kanata North I invite you to join me on Sat. Apr 10th at 9 am for a walk around the Beaverpond. We will meet at the parking area next to the Beaverpond at the end of Walden. Construction may start in this area later in the year so this is an opportunity to enjoy the woods as they are today. You may even see the beaver that has moved into the pond as well as the birds that are returning from the south and possibly other wildlife.

KEYROCK PARK DEVELOPMENT SOON TO BE UNDERWAY
Keyrock Park was to have been built out by Richcraft under a Front Ending Agreement with the City as insufficient funds had not yet been collected from the new development in the area. It took so long to negotiate the agreement that sufficient funds became available and Richcraft decided not to undertake the work. The City normally takes 2-3 months to tender the work, which would have put off construction until summer. Fortunately the contractor who had agreed to do the work for Richcraft was prepared to do it at the same price quoted in 2008 provided the City agreed by April 15th. To meet our procurement policies staff obtained a number of additional quotes that showed a saving of about $100,000. Last week the City Manager informed me that there was sufficient information for him to approve work being done by the contractor so action should start on the park by the end of this month with a projected completion of July 15th. Staff are also working to get the Brookshire and Sandhill Parks underway and anticipate a start in late May and completion by fall. I appreciate the efforts put forward by surface operations staff and our new park planner in moving these long awaited projects forward.

VIMY PIN
The Vimy Pin was created by the Vimy Foundation, a charitable organization, to commemorate Canada's momentous victory at Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917. It is the Foundation's goal to have millions of Canadians wear the Vimy Pin every Vimy Ridge Day (April 9th), as proclaimed by the Government of Canada in 2003. In partnership with the Navy League of Canada, Kanata Branch, the commemorative lapel pin is available until Thurs. Apr. 8th at Client Service Centers at City Hall, Ben Franklin Place, Kanata and Orleans. The price is $5.
