KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North
Last Column Until After the Election
Due to the Municipal election rules, and to make it fair for all candidates Councillors will not be writing columns, sending mass emails, updating my City website or doing city advertising from Sept 10 to Oct 25. During that time ongoing events such as Expo 55+ can still take place and be advertised but no new events can be started. Municipal business will still be ongoing so you can email or call my office on items of concern in the community and that concern will still be addressed. Direct any election related item directly to the candidate concerned.

Update on March Road
The construction schedule for the March Road widening has been revised to have the ultimate divided multi-lane configuration of March Road operational by the end of October of this year between Morgan’s Grant Way and Maxwell Bridge Road. To achieve this goal, there is a lot of construction work remaining to be completed at the intersection of March Road and Klondike Road, including traffic signals, lighting, road excavation, curbs, and sidewalk. In particular, the ultimate traffic signal configuration needs to be completed, which includes the installation of the signals for the west leg of the Klondike intersection. The intersecting lanes of Klondike Road with March Road also need to be constructed to properly line up with the ultimate intersection configuration. Traffic signals are scheduled to be operational at both Klondike Road and Maxwell Bridge Road by the end of October as well as final lane configurations for both Klondike Road and the Halton Terrace connection. Activating the traffic signals later in October, once all northbound and southbound lanes are fully constructed and operational, will also drastically reduce traffic queues both northbound and southbound along March Road. Pedestrian accesses at Klondike Road are being reviewed to make movements as safe as possible during the ongoing construction.

Sandhill and Brookshire Parks
The landscape contractor has initiated construction on Brookshire Park and has staked the layout at Sandhill Park. The same contractor is building both sites and is managing resources to have the parks completed some time in October. The contractor is first preparing the water play area in Brookshire Park, since truck traffic to pour concrete is one of the most disruptive activities on site. They will move to do work in Sandhill Park shortly thereafter. A meeting is being held with the help of resident volunteers to select the appropriate play equipment from the tenders received, which will be installed once the physical work is done on both sites.

BPA Receipts
There has been recent publicity about thermal paper receipts containing a chemical, bisphenol A (BPA). BPA can often be found on receipts collected from supermarkets, automated teller machines, gas stations and chain stores. Although BPA can transfer from paper receipts to the skin, the level of absorption is low and the health risk is also considered to be low. The City has numerous cash registers and debit/credit cards machines that use thermal paper to produce receipts but all paper now being received is BPA-free and older product in stock is being exchanged as a precaution.

Revisions to Retail Site Plan on March Road
The developer of the retail plaza on March Road at Maxwell Bridge has submitted a revised site plan to increase the size of the Sobey’s store from 3716 to 5057 square metres. Construction will be starting soon on this store and other outlets with opening of businesses in 2011.
