What’s cooking in the italian kitchen?

It is all about passion. To conceive a dream you need a lot of it , to make the dream come true you need logics. Thank God Italians do not lack any passion; it is apparently in our genetic heritage, if anything we tendentially get to be dominated by it. When Fiocchi of America was conceived the family passion ruled and dictated that we were to “ make it happen “ at all costs in the North American continent. We started in a small warehouse in Springfield (MO), importing from Italy containers of finished goods, as a second step , we purchased some land in nearby Ozark and we started a shotshell loading department. We faced many challenges : we needed to adjust what was a typical European product to the American hunter and shooter tastes, we had to figure out what was the ideal solution to market the product, we had to set up production equipment to add to flexibility, train personnel and find capable and trusted collaborators. Today, with over a quarter of a century behind our backs, the passion is there more than ever and logics kicked in (and why not also some sheer luck) and with this cocktail we plan to move forward in the future. Passion goes toward Marketing endeavors, logic leans more towards Production investments : in the last five years we successfully managed to find the right mix. Fiocchi of America strongly pushed towards new products and new lines to better fulfill our customers demand; we opted, with our traditionally production oriented mentality, to enhance production in the USA, instead of outsourcing the product as many do. The effort was titanic for a Group of our size but it was successful and paid back. I wish in this brief opening address for the 2011 Fiocchi of America catalogue to thank wholeheartedly our “mother“ Company in Italy that supported our efforts and together with us launched new procedures that will enable us to better and more efficiently manage future research and development projects and enhance the management of investments. I have to say that my cousins are really patient with me. Coming from a technical back ground and being the masters of our production capacity they have to put up with the evils of the Sales and Marketing man. They strive for stability and method, I go for changes and ever new venues, and I know that the day I will retire they are going to throw a huge party! But unfortunately we need both realities; the ability to find a comfortable equilibrium is the key of the success and the s e c r e t t o a v o i d h e a r t a t t a c k s a n d u l c e r. Ye a r 2 0 1 1 m a r k s a r e t u r n t o n o r m a l i t y for the ammunition market that was the object of eighteen months of unprecedented demand. Fiocchi of America tried to put to profit this positive interlude and to find in our kitchen new recipes to offer to our customers. The development is going to go through the exploitation of new materials and new concepts , both for products and for the marketing side of them, and namely the packaging. Fiocchi of America will push further the development of new lead free hyper performance products aimed at our hunting and Law Enforcement markets ; the collaboration with our friends from Tundra TM has been a great success and the new products for our Centerfire Rifle and Pistol markets are going to be a testament to it. Many of them will be featured in our new LE Catalogue that is going to appear around midyear. We have developed with Cyalume a unique tracer round in 12 gauge , aimed at the clay target and hunting shooting market. This product is the first one in history that is non pyrotechnical by design ( no danger of fire in the field ), non toxic , ( EPA approved ) and biodegradable. The performance of this round , that packs 3⁄4 oz. of shots together with the chemitracer device is nothing short than phenomenal ! Fiocchi of America in a conjunct effort of our R & D departments in Italy and U.S.A. is adding new calibers for Rifle Centerfire range and new bullet configurations that will prove to be very popular; the same concept is applying to new Pistol Centerfire products that are on the drawing table as I write and that will see introduction on the market towards the end of 2011. On the packaging side we are proudly introducing two concepts , adopted from previous technologies pertaining to the military side , but perfecting them for the civilian market: Canned Ammo and sealable “ Buckets “ for shotshells. The Canned Heat ammo line will allow for safe and prolonged storage capacity, the shotshell ‘buckets“ will allow the hunter to keep the product sheltered from the elements , and will definitively take care of the problem of damp or wet shotshell boxes on the field. Both packaging (if I may say so) are looking spectacular and will add excitement to every retail operation. The product offer in both packaging is not a substitution of the traditional box, but we are sure it is going to be very popular and we are planning to pack in this configuration more and more product during the next years. Last but not least Fiocchi of America would like to thank all of our customers that so much contributed to our success and have been an inexhaustible source of suggestions and ideas. For at least the last three decades, waterfowl hunters in the United States have been forced to use non-toxic shotgun shells. The “good old days” of shooting lead shot for ducks and geese have been over for quite some time. Still, the search goes on for the ultimate replacement for the knockdown power and performance that was available with lead shot. In fact, the Tundra has one of the lowest concentrations among all non toxic shot materials, making it just about the “greenest” shot on the market. Additionally, Fiocchi’s Tundra nontoxic shotgun shells are paired with non-toxic primers, unlike many competitors. The benefits of Tundra are many. Obviously, it is an improvement over steel, but it comes as close to lead as any nontoxic material on the market. First and foremost, Tundra allows the hunter to utilize any choke constriction. By comparison, steel has warnings that advise hunters not to use full choke when shooting steel shot shells. Thus with Tundra, that old favorite, family heirloom shotgun with the full choke can now be safely fired in the marsh again! Tundra retains its softness and does not get brittle like normal tungsten, bismuth or steel. Since it deforms (due to being soft) it will not damage barrels even those constructed from Damascus steel no matter what the choke (even full turkey chokes). Now imagine using that old side by side shotgun of grandpa’s and crushing ducks at sixty to seventy yards. Another by product of Tundra is that it is denser than all other shot material, thus it carries more energy and retains that down range as well. This makes longer “killing” shots possible, a great option on late season educated birds. Besides having more energy or knockdown power, the density of Tundra shot helps create a more effective pattern in most guns. Mike Love, Fiocchi area manager, gave a good example of the characteristic of Tundra shot. Mike explained that common steel shot is very brittle as are other non toxic shot materials. Yet, he advised that a Tundra pellet can be easily deformed by pressing on it with a common ink pen. No more damaged teeth when eating cooked meat should the hunter miss a pellet when cleaning birds! The engineers at Fiocchi knew they were on to a great discovery with the Tundra composite material. During the R & D process, they developed two different weights or densities of the material, 9.5 and 12.5 g. For comparison, the 9.5 g density is 123 % heavier than steel, while the 12.5 g version is 160% heavier than steel and 115% heavier than lead! Now imagine the improvement that will have on your hunting success!

It goes without saying that since Tundra is denser or heavier in weight than steel, it will not have the blazing muzzle velocity advertised by steel loads. Mike Love stated that typical velocity in the Tundra 9.5g, 2 ¾ inch, 12 gauge load will be approximately 1340 fps. The Tundra 12.5g version lists 1350 fps in the 2 ¾ inch 12 gauge shell. Moving up to a three inch 12 gauge load, the Tundra 9.5g has a velocity of 1350 fps, while its denser brother the 12.5g offering lists 1280 fps velocity. The 12.5g is simply a purer material, thus more dense in composite than the 9.5g. Currently, only twelve gauge loads are offered, although twenty gauge ammo is expected in 2011.

Fiocchi Ammo - An Interview with Carlo Fiocchi by www.luckygunner.com The Godfather. The Sopranos. Pop culture’s presentation of Italian family businesses here in the US – particularly ones that somehow involve firearms - isn’t always flattering or glamorous. But is this presentation realistic? Or could the reality of a multigenerational Italian family business actually be better than the movies? Better yet, is there one that could even be called a true American success story? To answer those questions, the folks at LuckyGunner.com recently caught up with Carlo Fiocchi, a 4th generation Italian ammunition manufacturer. What we learned surprised us…and if you’ve watched either The Godfather or The Sopranos like we have, then his answers about Fiocchi Ammo will really surprise you too.

Fiocchi America In 1983, Carlo Fiocchi and his family decided to bring the Italian heritage and NATO-spec quality of Fiocchi Ammunition to the American domestic market. From 1983 until 1996 Mr. Fiocchi worked to create a beachhead in America for their product before taking a break to consult for third-parties in the firearms and optics markets. As the reigns passed in 2005 from the 3rd generation (who still consult for the company from retirement) to the 4th generation, Mr. Fiocchi’s younger cousins called him back into the business to lead the US market sales. Since that time Mr. Fiocchi has been a busy man: “We have grown over 500% since 2005.” At a time when many employers are cutting their payrolls, this growth has been good for Americans in Ozark, Missouri where Fiocchi America employs about 90% of their work force (the rest are in Nevada). We asked what percentage of Fiocchi ammo that is sold domestically in the United States is actually loaded here, the answer to which you can see in the breakdown over on the right. In a nutshell, more than 75% of the ammunition sold by Fiocchi in the U.S. is loaded here in the U.S., a statistic not widely known in the arms industry.

instead of focusing on the next quarter, we focus on the next generation when it comes to investments, strategies, and marketing.” He seemed convinced that their current product lines, combined with their cutting edge non-toxic innovation, will keep the next generation of Fiocchi’s with plenty of work on their hands, “We actually have 5th generation Fiocchi’s working externally right now, even though none of them currently work in the family business” (which is apparently part of their secret formula to holding the family business in tact across generations). Oh . . . . and Mr. Fiocchi’s answer to our question of how he spends his days? Remember, this is a 4th generation Italian ammunition manufacturer who fits the part: tall, dark, handsome, thick accent, and an expensive pin-stripe suit. We expected to hear about late meetings in cigar-filled rooms with fellow international arms dealers, leisurely flights on private planes to private yachts, or perhaps even skydiving and driving Formula-One cars. Instead: “I don’t sleep a lot,” he replies and then proceeds to layout a schedule that usually starts with emails at 6am in his office and ends around 1am with phone calls to his cousins in Lecco, Italy discussing component production, supply chain management, and new product innovations. As the interview drew to a close, it began to make more sense. Extract from editorial by bob Rogers in Shooting Sports Retailer Jan/Feb 2011 Contributing writer Jeff Fletcher reports in Light Up Your Ranges, a new development in clay target shooting, especially under the lights (think Monday Night Shooting). The story is all about Fiocchi’s new Cyalume ChemiTracer shotshell which, when fired, visually leaves a reddish trail light on its way to the flying clay target. The result is two-fold: shooters can see where their shot is going (leading or behind, over or below the target) and, most significantly, allows spectators to see a crop of shot powdering a clay bird. In this article, Mr. Fiocchi opens up about his family’s history during the allied bombing of the Fiocchi’s family plants in After only a short time, anyone who speaks with Mr. Fiocchi can tell that he has a northern Italy during World War II, how the Fiocchi family thinks commanding grip on the domestic ammunition market; his prestigious Italian speech about business and ammunition, and even what Mr. Fiocchi almost melts into boyish excitement when he starts discussing new product development, thinks about his American competitors like Remington and the speed at which markets currently change, and the measures Fiocchi America employs Winchester. . . . so let’s get started, capisci? to meet those changes head on. However, his tone of voice became almost reverential when he spoke about his American competitors like Remington and Winchester, “who I respect immensely.” Many Americans may not realize it, but Fiocchi actually has a long-standing partnership with Hornady. “We have a great relationship with Hornady. They are a family business also and I think our cultures of honor and integrity are a great match. We both have a family reputation to uphold and besides, they just make a top notch product.” While Fiocchi currently loads Hornady projectiles into a variety of cartridges, Mr. Fiocchi recalled how they started by loading the Hornady V-max bullet into the 5.7x28mm cartridge for FN Herstal and quickly moved the partnership into more product lines. Additionally, Fiocchi loads Sierra projectiles into a number of their center-fire rifle cartridges. The Future of Fiocchi When we asked Mr. Fiocchi where he wanted to be in 10 years, he said with a laugh, “At the beach, but that is never going to happen because it isn’t in my nature.” When we asked Mr. Fiocchi to tell us where he envisioned Fiocchi USA in ten years, he proceeded to launch into a long list of initiatives and product launches, centered mostly around the non-toxic market, that he estimated will keep him busy for at least seven to ten years. Here is a brief overview of what to look for from Fiocchi: Law-Enforcement Product Line - Fiocchi has developed a frangible FMJ round with a compound core (instead of lead) that is approved by the Fish & Wildlife Service which they plan to build a law-enforcement ammunition line around. Reloading Guide for Non-Toxic Ammunition - Fiocchi is currently developing a thorough at-home reloading guide for non-toxic ammunition because working with non-toxic primers requires unconventional combinations of components and assembly processes. Look for this to be released to the US market in the next 6-12 months. Cowboy Action Product Line - Fiocchi plans to release a complete line of cowboy action products by 2011, starting with 45 Long Colt, 44 Special, 32 S&W Long, and 30-30. When asked about the future of Fiocchi as a family business, he disclosed, “Since it is a 100% family business, matters are always politically delicate. . . . but the upside is that

Through gatherings like the annual family Christmas dinner, which they still observe to this day, Carlo Fiocchi was steeped in family legend and reared in the vocabulary of small arms ammunition from a very young age. “My first memories of life are in the ammunition business, from as early as 3-4 years old,” Mr. Fiocchi, now 54, warmly recalls through a thick Italian accent. Fiocchi Munizioni, the 100% privately held Italian parent company, has had its share of setbacks since it was founded in 1876 by Giulio Fiocchi. During World War II, he explains, “we were basically occupied after 1943 by the Germans and the plants suffered tremendously from air raids.” Thankfully, as the 2nd and 3rd generation of Fiocchi’s have told him, “the family decided to reach into what was left of their savings, pour it back into the business, and rebuild – which was not atypical for other European family businesses at the time,” recounts Mr. Fiocchi. While the destruction wrought during WWII almost eliminated the Fiocchi family from the ammunition business, their resilience and desire to rebuild created somewhat of an opportunity for them: new factories, new technology, new equipment. Engineers at Heart Mr. Fiocchi explains that while his passion is in sales, marketing, and building his brand in the marketplace, his family has traditionally been one of engineers: “My family members are almost all engineers. We produce or design the vast majority of our own machines in our internal design shop. Our engineering department creates the specs, the dies, and the prototypes.” The customers, he points out, are ultimately the benefactors of this product-centric approach. For example, Fiocchi is NATO-certified which means they can supply all the NATO militaries and police forces: “This is an advantage for us because our factory can produce ammunition that is proven.” When asked if that means ammunition sold to the United States civilian market is of similar quality, Mr. Fiocchi responded, “Yes, they are ran from the same production lines. It makes no sense [to split them up] if you consider the costs between making it well and not so well.”

But now comes possibly the next big draw: events staged like a mini fireworks show that Fiocchi Ammo is still entirely owned by the founder’s family after being in business for over 130 years! are produced around visual impacts that attract fans to bleacher seats. Its latest product, seen in the aforementioned video, is called the ChemiTracer, the shotgun shell developed for Fiocchi by Cyalume Technologies, maker of military-grade chemiluminescent light instruments (think break-apart light sticks), a cartridge that includes tracer-like components that allow shooters and spectators alike to see the shot pellets come out of the gun, tracing their way to hits or misses on clay targets. Think of it as Sporting Clays on steroids. ChemiTracer, the world’s first nonpyrotechnic shot gun tracer, creates a daytime-visible trace that travels with the cloud of the shot allowing shooters to instantly determine how to correct their aim. Cyalume and Fiocchi anticipate presenting the new ChemiTracer shotshell platform with a planned full product launch in 2011. The non-toxic, non-flammable, non-incendiary Chemi Tracer shotgun shell dramatically enhances training capabilities for both the law enforcement and target shooting markets while eliminating all of the fire hazards and environmental issues associated with conventional tracer applications. Carlo Fiocchi, Vice-President of Marketing and Sales, Fiocchi Ammunition USA, claims that the new ammo product has far-reaching possibilities for training. “The ChemiTracer is a transformational technological break through which has the potential to revolutionize training for our shooters,” he said. But that may only be the cake below the icing. The really good stuff comes when shooters and non-shooters, alike, see the product in action. At that point, spectators could become participants and participating shooters means growth sales for retailers.

Fiocchi Tundra Waterfowl and Upland/Game bird You need an alternative to steel that flies and hits like lead. You want to be able to shoot it on your old or new gun without concerns about barrel damage from the payload. We went to work to make that happen. The result is our Tundra line of tungsten-composite shotshells. With the right combination of materials (tungsten, stainless steel, a binder, and graphite coating) we have found the alternative to lead and steel that does the job without damaging your barrels. Since it behaves like lead, our Tundra can be shot and choked like lead. The pellets are round, fly true, and penetrate and deform on contact with the game like lead. No odd-shaped pellets, no brittle or broken pellets, no gun damage, no lack of deformation, and reduced cripples. Just dead birds. That’s why Tundra will work for you. Wipe down the old guns and get them back in the hunt. Fiocchi offers Tundra in two weights (densities)-heavier than lead and heavier than bismuth. We offer 12 ga. and 20 ga. loads in 2 ¾” and 3”, and shot sizes from BB to #6, for everything from geese on the fly, ducks over decoys, and turkeys to pheasants and everything in between. Fiocchi Golden Pheasant Line The best we can make for pheasant hunters-that is our Golden Pheasant. With a long-standing history of successful bird hunts, our Golden Pheasant loads combine hard, nickel-plated shot with powder and primer combinations to ensure consistent performance in the most demanding hunting conditions. We go the extra step with nickel plating. To nickel plate the shot, it must first be copper plated to get the nickel to stick. So, nickel-plated shot is like copper plated shot, but harder so the benefits are greater. The major benefit of nickel-plated shot is increased surface hardness which means the pellets stay rounder, fly truer at longer range to deliver good patterns, cut through feathers, and penetrate deeper for quick, humane kills. Most pheasant hunters go to great lengths to hunt pheasants-don’t skimp on the most important gear of the trip. Make sure Fiocchi Golden Pheasants are along for the hunt. Available in 12ga. Fiocchi offers high-velocity (1325 f.p.s) buckshot loads in 00 and #4 buck for hunting, home defense, or law enforcement. Fiocchi also offers a reduced recoil load at 1150 f.p.s . that still delivers plenty of energy on target with much less recoil. This load also works well for home defense and LE training (it may or may not function various semiautomatic shotguns). Fiocchi Aero Slug Line Fiocchi’s use of the distinctive attached wad makes sure our slug arrives on target. They work well in smooth and rifled barrels to deliver excellent accuracy. All of our slugs are full-bore for maximum impact. Our heavy-hitter is a 1 oz. at 1560 f.p.s., 2 ¾”. Used by military re-enactors, in ceremonies, for training exercises, in theatrical productions and hunting dog training, blank ammunition provide the report and realism of conventional ammunition without projectile. Fiocchi’s popper Blanks (offered in 1,000 round bulk packaging) are the most popular and successful loads on the US market for use in hunting and dog training competitions. Our Rubber Buckshot and Rubber Baton rounds are an ideal resource for LE use in the less than lethal field as they are for game management when the objective is to deter the presence of an animal more than the elimination of the same. All Fiocchi centerfire blanks are manufactured using brass cases. Most rimmed calibers now incorporate crimped primers for greater reliability when used in revolvers.
