RACE 11 - Taking a stand against favorites Dialed In and Uncle Mo in a wide open Kentucky Derby...The best wagering strategy for this race seems a value-based approach, focusing on price horses that figure to be overlays. With that in mind, the choice is 30-1 morning-line bomb SANTIVA, the beaten favorite in the Bluegrass, who ate kickback when boxed in for most of that race before fading to ninth. Throw in that the Bluegrass came over the synthetic Polytrack at Keeneland, and this horse gets a pass for his last. Take note that on dirt he won the Kentucky Jockey Club over this track last fall, and was second in the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds in February while racing four wide around both turns. His stalking style also looks well suited to what should be a lively pace, and being a son of Giant's Causeway, he is bred to stay a mile and a quarter. SOLDAT, a late arrival to Churchill this week after staying in Florida to prepare for this race, doesn't have much of a media story around him to drive down his price. What he does have, though, is talent and experience. He won the Fountain Of Youth this winter, which followed a romp in the slop at Gulfstream in an allowance there. Admittedly, his last race, a fifth in the Florida Derby as the favorite, was dismal and has led many to conclude he needs the lead to be at his best. Perhaps so...but would rather take a contrarian view that he simply had an off day, since he is training well and a price. Unlike the top two selections, SHACKLEFORD comes off the race of his life, a close second in the Florida Derby to Dialed In after setting a fast pace, and has trained lights out leading up to the Derby. He seems favorably drawn outside most of the other speed horses. MUCHO MACHO MAN beat the top choice in the Risen Star Stakes in February but he had the benefit of having already started this year, while SANTIVA was just kicking off his 3-year-old campaign. RACE 11 - Taking a stand against favorites Dialed In and Uncle Mo in a wide open Kentucky Derby...The best wagering strategy for this race seems a value-based approach, focusing on price horses that figure to be overlays. With that in mind, the choice is 30-1 morning-line bomb SANTIVA, the beaten favorite in the Bluegrass, who ate kickback when boxed in for most of that race before fading to ninth. Throw in that the Bluegrass came over the synthetic Polytrack at Keeneland, and this horse gets a pass for his last. Take note that on dirt he won the Kentucky Jockey Club over this track last fall, and was second in the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds in February while racing four wide around both turns. His stalking style also looks well suited to what should be a lively pace, and being a son of Giant's Causeway, he is bred to stay a mile and a quarter. SOLDAT, a late arrival to Churchill this week after staying in Florida to prepare for this race, doesn't have much of a media story around him to drive down his price. What he does have, though, is talent and experience. He won the Fountain Of Youth this winter, which followed a romp in the slop at Gulfstream in an allowance there. Admittedly, his last race, a fifth in the Florida Derby as the favorite, was dismal and has led many to conclude he needs the lead to be at his best. Perhaps so...but would rather take a contrarian view that he simply had an off day, since he is training well and a price. Unlike the top two selections, SHACKLEFORD comes off the race of his life, a close second in the Florida Derby to Dialed In after setting a fast pace, and has trained lights out leading up to the Derby. He seems favorably drawn outside most of the other speed horses. MUCHO MACHO MAN beat the top choice in the Risen Star Stakes in February but he had the benefit of having already started this year, while SANTIVA was just kicking off his 3-year-old campaign.
