December 2012
President’s Message
The Holiday season is upon us and the hustle and bustle has begun. December is the month to review the year and look forward to a New Year. I am extremely proud of our Sierra Madre Library. It does so much for the people of Sierra Madre on a very tight budget and with a very small staff. Other Libraries with more financial resources and larger staffs can look to our Library as a model of efficient customer service. Our collections, programs and services are second to none even in this challenging fiscal climate. I appreciate and am grateful for the hard work of all of our Board of Directors, the Trustees, Library Director Carolyn Thomas and the Library staff. As President I am particularly blessed because I have such a wonderful team of people helping to make the Friends of the Library one of the strongest, most vibrant groups in Sierra Madre. Thanks also to all of you who contribute your time and money every year to support our mission. For almost 60 years the Friends have been an important reason that our Library is so special to the men, women and children of Sierra Madre. Finally, I’d like to extend the very best wishes from the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Library for a very Merry Holiday Season and a Happy, Healthy New Year to you and your loved ones.
Darlene Traxler

FRIENDS OF THE SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY FINANCIAL AND TAX RETURNS AVAILABLE
A copy of the Federal and California tax returns, along with a copy of the Treasurer's final report for the year ended June 30, 2012, is available in the Library for anyone wishing to review them. Please request at the front desk and return when you complete your review. If you have any questions, please contact Friends’ Treasurer, Sandra Dickey, at (626) 355-6190.

SILENT AUCTION OF COLLECTIBLE BOOKS A SUCCESS!
The Best Used Book Sale’s Silent Auction, held in October, was a great success. The 15 books sold earned $589 for the Library! We are planning another Silent Auction to be held in the Spring and would welcome your donations of exceptional books.

MEMBERSHIP

Our membership roster continues to grow slowly. As you know, numbers increase only when current members renew their memberships and new folk are added. Our Business memberships continue to grow as well. Thank you to G-E-M Plumbing for becoming our newest Business member! Please remember G-E-M when you have any plumbing needs. Historically and practically, membership dues fund two important functions within the Friends. Your annual dues support the production and mailing of our monthly newsletter, which serves to advertise and promote Friends and Library events. Dues also help pay for the administrative functions of the Friends Board. If these expenses are paid by membership dues, more income from our fundraising events can be forwarded directly to the Library. Would you consider helping us in growing our membership? If every current member were to encourage one friend or family member to join, we could double our membership, directing more dollars to our Library. Pick up a few Friends’ brochures at the Library and help us to grow!

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT BENEFITS SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY
Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Boy Scouting and to attain it one must earn at least twenty-one merit badges and complete a service project. When choosing his service project, Alex Tosh, 18, son of Meegan and David Tosh of Sierra Madre, noticed a need at the Sierra Madre Library and figured out a way to meet that need. Two rickety benches by the back door of the Library, the “free bench,” were the repository for donated periodicals and surplus books from the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library’s Best Used Book Sales. With little support and no cover, items on the benches frequently ended up on the ground or got wet before Library patrons could go through them.

PARTNERS PROGRAM

As you may or may not know, Patricia Hall, founder and director of the Partners for the past three years, recently retired. We thank Patricia for her foresight and follow-through in founding the Partners. Her creative ideas have contributed greatly to the ability of the Friends to continue to support our Library. Beth Smith-Kellock will be the new go-to person for the Partners. Please contact her if you have questions at (626) 355-8637. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the following Partners who have renewed their annual partnerships - dating from July 2012 to the presentAlice & Eric Clark, Toni Navarro, Fran Garbaccio, Patricia Hall, Meegan Tosh, Darlene Traxler, Mary & James Carter, Marlene & Harry Enmark, Patrick & Jill Holland, Barbara L. Hopp, Alan & Shirley Leahy, Sierra Madre Civic Club, Toni Buckner, Phyllis Chapman, Margaret Quigley, Thomas Reichardt, Beth Smith-Kellock & Ross Kellock, Rob & Wendy Stockly, Carolyn & David Thomas, and Winifred & George Swanson. We also welcome new Partners Heather & Dan Banis and Susan L. Quinn. You can now find information about joining the Partners in our newly updated Friends brochure and also on our website sierramadrelibraryfriends.org. We welcome your interest and partnership. Thank you, Partners, for your commitment and ongoing support of our Library. It is greatly appreciated.

Pictured are Alex Tosh (on the right) and his friend Theo Strickland (left) working on the bench.

Alex, a Senior at Pasadena High School and a member of Troop 103, had his plans approved by the City of Sierra Madre to be sure that what he constructed would be up to code. Working with his dad and two other scouts, Alex built the Library’s new “free bench,” an attractive, sturdy, and covered table that will serve the Library and the Friends well. In a letter to Alex, Library Director Carolyn Thomas praised his contribution and noted that it was a major improvement over what they had before. Stop by the Library to see our latest addition and perhaps to find a treasure among the items on the new “free bench.”

READER’S REVIEW

This month’s review is by Lida Bushloper

Dropped Names: Famous Men and Women As I Knew Them by Frank Langella This memoir is a cut above most Hollywood gossip books. As the title suggests, Langella includes accounts of his encounters with folk not in “show biz”—people like Tip O’Neill and The Queen Mother. Also, Langella doesn’t just recount his observations, he tells his own role and involvement in the action. He tries to be honest about his own faults and missteps. He is unfailingly forthright about his opinions, as in the piece on Roddy McDowell, opinions not just about McDowell, but also about how the film business has changed since his early days as an actor. As for dishing about these individuals, he has enough respect (or perhaps self-preservation) to include only people already dead. You can dip into this collection, reading only those sections about characters that interest you, or read it straight through. The order of the essays follows the order of the death dates of those dealt with. There is some foul language. But while he may sometimes seem harsh in his judgments, as he states about McDowell, he’s never really “bitchy or cruel, just deliciously entertaining.” CALL # STATUS: 921 New Book Section Langella
