Agribusiness is the coordination of all activities that contribute to the production, processing, marketing, distribution, financing and development of agricultural commodities and resources. This includes food, fiber, wood products, natural resources, horticulture, and other plant and animal products and services.

Agribusiness is a high-tech industry that uses satellite systems, computer databases and spreadsheets, biotechnology, and many other innovations to increase efficiency and profitability. Individuals choosing this pathway may serve as coordinators who oversee and contribute to the production, processing, distribution, marketing, financing, and development of agricultural merchandise and resources. These resources might include food, fiber, wood

f you’re an animal lover, you may find your niche in an Animal Systems career. Some who choose this career pathway work directly with animals – they train, feed, water, exercise, bathe and groom their furry friends, as well as maintain and clean their cages. Professionals in this field may inspect and grade livestock food products, purchase livestock, or work in technical sales and marketing. Some people in the animal systems career path work to develop better, more efficient ways of producing and processing meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products. Others advise agriculture producers on how to upgrade animal housing facilities properly, lower mortality rates, handle waste matter or increase production of animal products, such as milk or eggs. In addition, careers for hunters and trappers are available, which involve setting bait and traps, tracking animals and obtaining them through various methods.

This career pathway is becoming increasingly important in the field of agriculture, and the job opportunities are expanding every day. One popular field within Biotechnology Systems involves genetically engineering plants to enhance them in a variety of ways. For example, it is possible to make plants more nutritious, larger and more resistant to extreme weather. Individuals choosing this pathway may also work to alter the amount of chemicals necessary for successful crop production. The renewable fuels industry also contributes to the field of biotechnology, as the United States seeks methods of creating fuel from agricultural byproducts and crops including switchgrass, canola, corn and soybeans.

An environmental technician or engineer may focus on hazardous-waste management by evaluating and analyzing hazardous materials while also creating regulations in order to prevent accidents or dangerous situations. Others in this career path may work with city governments to maintain and improve water and air quality for local residents. concerns continue to rise. A shift in emphasis toward preventing problems rather than controlling those that already exist will also spur demand for these positions. More careers focused on preventing environmental issues are predicted to develop in the future, as more people begin to pay closer attention to their impacts on the environment.

Agricultural and food scientists/technologists should be able to work independently or as part of a team and be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both in speaking and writing. Most agricultural scientists also need an understanding of basic business principles. prepAre nOw To pursue a career in Food Products and Processing, a solid education in science is key. Take multiple science courses during middle and high school, which will create a good base of knowledge when entering college. f spending time outdoors interacting with nature is a favorite pastime for you, a career in Natural Resource Systems could be a good fit. These careers may involve working to develop, maintain and manage forests and natural environments, as well as acquiring various types of marine life for human utilization, animal feed, bait and other purposes. Individuals choosing to work as conservation scientists or foresters may manage, develop, use, and help protect forests and rangelands. Careers as conservation scientists and foresters are available all over the United States and may include managing, developing and helping to protect the country’s range lands and 737 million acres of forests. Nearly two-thirds of conservation scientists and foresters are employed by federal, state, or local governments – many by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Private sector jobs can be within consulting firms or scientific research groups. Employment of foresters is concentrated in the western and southern states, where many national and private forests and parks, and most of the lumber and pulpwood-producing forests are located. But working in this pathway doesn’t mean you can’t live in a city. Other careers in this pathway may require a bachelor’s or master’s degree in natural resource management, wildlife management or a related field. Technicians in all areas of Natural Resource Systems will require on-the-job training. prepAre nOw Many industry professionals point to their lifelong interest in the outdoors as a primary career motivator. Many FFA supervised agricultural experience programs, including wildlife management and outdoor recreation, will help you begin to learn the industry. The forestry career development event will help you learn basic tree knowledge, industry terminology and skills that foresters will need. General outdoor hobbies can also teach you a great deal about this career field. This helps producers of food, feed and fiber crops continue to feed a growing population while conserving natural resources and maintaining the environment. Individuals in this pathway also develop ways to improve the nutritional value of crops and the quality of seeds. They use genetic engineering to develop crops resistant to pests and drought.

ndividuals entering the Power, Structural and Technical Systems career pathway usually enjoy working with equipment and all things technical. Career professionals in this field apply knowledge of engineering, hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, power, structures and controls to the field of agriculture. They design agricultural structures as well as machinery and equipment. They develop ways to conserve soil and water and improve the processing of agricultural products.

eduCAtiOn requireMents This field has a wide range of educational opportunities, which makes it especially appealing to many students. Degrees for some of the more scientific-based careers range from an associate degree to a Ph.D. Other jobs require technical school training, resulting in certifications like certified welding machine operator or certified machinist. For some positions, initial and continuing on-the-job training is provided. Apprenticeship programs are also popular within these careers, which give an opportunity for on-the-job training but under the watchful eye of a longtime, certified professional. prepAre nOw High school career and technical education courses have proven to help many students determine if this pathway is their chosen career. Many career professionals credit their high school agricultural education or shop classes as the start to their Power, Structural and Technical Systems career. Enroll in these courses to gain hands-on experience and knowledge of the industry. The FFA agricultural mechanics career development event can also provide hands-on experience. Other career preparation experience can come through job shadowing current career professionals, or by pursuing an FFA supervised agricultural experience program that may include working for an auto mechanic, construction company, farmer or engineering company.
