MEMBER OF THE MONTH KALEY AND BRADEN SAFDIR BY JUDY MORIN
KALEY WITH HER BLUE FRONT AMAZON NAMED “RATCHET’ AND BRADEN WITH HIS COCKATIEL “SNICKERS”

It is my pleasure to introduce
our members of the month, featuring Kaley & Braden Safdir of Palm City Florida. They both are natives of Florida, Kaley being born in Ft. Lauderdale, moving to Palm City with her Mom and Dad at the age of one. She and her Mom were members of TCEBC when

Kaley was young. In fact, if you attended the Expo and looked at our “Poster Boards” from the past she was featured at age 5 with her Lovebird on one of them. Her interest in birds came thru her Mom at an early age when they visited pet shops and bird Expos all over the area. Since then and the passing of her Lovebird she now has a

Blue Front “Ratchet” which is well bonded to her. Mom says “Ratchet” tolerates the rest of the family but Kaley is number one. Another pet that keeps Kaley busy is her quarter horse named “Louie”. Even though she hasn’t been riding him much lately, due to a back injury, he is still a part of her life. (Continued on Page 3)

PRESIDENT’S PERCH - By Kathy Dwyer
Our April meeting had plenty of great food and it was really nice to have a chance to talk to some of our new members. I’m excited to say that one of our newest members, Emily Recco has volunteered to take care of our Facebook page. She’s made improvements to it already and I know she’ll do a good job keeping it up to date and looking good. If you have submissions for Facebook, Emily’s email address is Jim & Kathy Dwyer The Heart & Soul of TCEBC have a picnic at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. We will meet at 12:30 and will plan to have lunch at 1:00 pm. There is a 3:00 pm nature boat trip that will take us back to Trapper Nelson’s exhibit. Admission to the park is $6 per car, up to accomplishments and it would have been wonderful if she could have been here to present Kevin the award. However, Toni (Kevin’s aunt) and Lynda Lynn, a friend of the family, will have the honors. I hope they have a great time. This month we will have our raffle table and refreshment table and any donation to either one would be greatly appreciated. I also need to mention that yearly dues are due. If you haven’t paid for 2013 this will be the last newsletter. We don’t want to lose you, so please send Judy Morin a check. Her address is on the back of the newsletter. Hope to see you at the eight people. The cost of the meeting. boat ride is $20 per person. We will have a sign-up sheet at our Kathy D. May meeting to get an idea of how many members will be coming and what type of covered dish you will bring. Friends and family are welcome to join us. We will be meeting at the large picnic area by the water. If you have folding chairs you should bring them. On May 24th Lynda Lynn and Toni Maschek will be going to Gainesville to present our Senior Scholarship awards. This year’s recipients are Kevin Maschek and Catherine Kang. Kevin is the grandson of our past Board member Eileen Jenny. She was very proud of Kevin’s

We’ve made a few changes for the meetings this Summer. As you know our May meeting will be on the 19th (the third Sunday) because of the Memorial Day weekend on our regular fourth Sunday. Pat Surniak will give a presentation on foraging toys and how to make them. I think everyone will have a chance to make a toy. It should be a lot of fun. Our June meeting has also been changed to June 2nd, the 1st Sunday in June. We are going to

MEMBER OF THE MONTH - (Continued from Pg 1)
Kaley is a sophomore at South Fork High School, where she is a cheerleader and on the La Cross team. Her brother, Braden, born in Stuart, has also been into birds, having his own Lovebird at an early age. He is in the fifth grade at Citrus Grove Elementary School and likes all sports, playing lots of Roller and Ice Hockey, Kickball and La Cross. After the passing of his Lovebird and being without one, he was the lucky recipient of a Cockatiel at the Expo and has named him “Snickers”. He is thankful to the person who gave him “Snickers”. Another pet that keeps Braden busy is his Bearded Dragon, “Lloyd”. Both Kaley and Braden are active in their Church – Episcopal Church of the Advent in Palm City – serving as Acolytes. We want to thank both of them for all their work at the Expo. Along with their Mom, Amy, they spent a great deal of time helping on Saturday evening setting up and all day Sunday most of it at the admissions table. Thanks to Mom and Dad for raising such great children, and bringing them to our area and once again members of TCEBC.

GUEST SPEAKER FOR MAY MEETING - PATTIE SURNIAK - FUN TOYS TO MAKE
Most of the toys will be ones that can be made at home,   that cost only  pennies to make. They are foraging and shredding toys. They are fun projects to make with the grand kids.  These  toys can help with some parrot problems such as plucking and boredom.  There will be some of the more expensive toys donated to the raffle table. One retails on the Internet for $59.00.  Pattie

‘ALERT’
REYNOLDS COOKING BAGS An e-mail states: "A lady at our club meeting yesterday brought in a box of the new Reynolds cooking bags made of aluminum and plastic made for the oven...They say you can use them up to 450...She used 2 bags at 375 for 40 minutes and after coming back in 30 minutes found her Amazon closest to the kitchen pumping for air and eyes were burnt from the fumes...Metallic fumes filled the air...There is no doubt this bird would have been dead in another 10 minutes...Other birds suffered eye irritations. She called the company and reported it and we will run this in our Please post this where you think you may save birds lives..

APRIL 2013 GENERAL MEETING - (Continued from Pg 3)
Judy also gave an expo report showing the total profit for this year was $4148.90 and a comparison of expenses and profit to last year’s expo. Motion to approve the report was made by Barbara Reilly and seconded by Barbara Roof and approved by all. A discussion followed on suggestions for possible improvements for next year’s expo. Kathy said it was unfortunate that Tom Johnson was moving and could not help us with a grand raffle this year. She also noted there were no large bird breeders there and had spoken to one who said the demand was back up for the larger birds and all hers had previously been sold. It was suggested that possibly club members could bring in birds and have an exhibit of the larger birds next year. Kathy said the new kitchen was nice. She also discussed our banner was missing from the Ft. Pierce location. Jim went to take it down and it had already been removed and could not be found. Kathy said our teenaged helpers did a wonderful job helping set up, clean and tear down. Kathy thanked Jim for all his help and George thanked everyone. Kathy will not be available for the June meeting she asked if we wanted to have the meeting and/or have the picnic June 2nd. This will be decided at the May meeting. A boat trip was also discussed. May meeting will be the 3rd Sunday, May 19th. Pat Surniak will do a presentation on foraging toys. Business portion adjourned at 2:35 and a covered dish and barbecue lunch was served. Jonathan Dickinson State Park - Flora and Fauna - What You Can See Nesting ospreys provide unique bird watching opportunities for park visitors. Several pairs of osprey have built their nests along the Loxahatchee River inside the park. The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is a large hawk that hunts fish, diving into the water to catch its prey. Unlike other raptors, ospreys have curved claws and special foot pads which allow them to carry large fish. Keep your eyes peeled for the large brown and white raptors as you hike along the Kitching Creak trail or take a canoe or kayak up the Loxahatchee River. Be sure to bring along your binoculars and watch as the adult ospreys bring fish back to the nest for the fledglings. Stop by the Kimbell Center for more information and to pick up a checklist of 158 bird species you may find within the park.
