Nevada City to host its 53rd Classic Bicycle Race this Father’s Day

trap on those biking helmets and get your game faces on bicycle racers - the 53rd annual Nevada City Classic is taking place on Father’s Day. The Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race is the oldest cyclist race west of the Mississippi and the second oldest race in the nation. It’s also one of the most difficult and technical races in the country, according to Duane Strawser, lead organizer for the Classic since 2001 along with his wife Connie Strawser. “To really call yourself a racer you’ve got Women’s Pro podium in 2009 - 1st place went to Shelley Olds, to have done Nevada City at least once in 2nd to Brooke Miller & 3rd to Katrina Nash. your career,” said Strawser, who has participated in the race himself on multi“As far as the spectators go, it’s one of ple occasions. the most spectator-friendly courses with excellent The Classic has drawn racers from all viewing areas. It’s over the country as well as others from also one of the higharound the world. It welcomes both new est speed courses in the talent and seasoned professionals such as US , with riders Lance Armstrong who won going over 50 mph, first place in 2009. which is a big part of

The 53rd annual Nevada City Classic

As a non-profit event, all proceeds from the Nevada City Classic go to other local non-profit organizations such as the park systems and hospitals, which use the funds to provide free screening for women’s cervical cancer and men’s prostate cancer. The race also helps bring revenue to Nevada City businesses and residents each year, according to Strawser. The Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race will take place from 1-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 16 in historic downtown Nevada City . It is highly recommended that anyone wishing to participate in the race register early as there is a limited number of entries in each of the five races to take place that day. the spectacle,” said Strawser. On average about 300 racers participate in the Classic each year, cheered on by around 4,000 to 5,000 spectators, making the Classic one of the nation’s largest bicycling events. In years past the Nevada City Classic has been funded by commercial organizations, but for the last 12 years support from local sponsors have been funding the event. “Once they saw that the money was going directly into the race itself and not toward personal paychecks or pamphlets a lot of the local sponsors started to jump back on board,” Strawser said. “It’s really something to benefit the community and it’s nonprofit.”

Three days of community events on tap
rab your cowboy hat and dust off those boots. It’s that time of year again. The professional and community rodeo is coming right up May 17-19 in Penn Valley. Established in 1956 as a fund raiser for the Penn Valley Fire Department, the rodeo was held each spring for 47 years until low community support caused its demise in 2004. Pioneer Motors Q & A
By Tiffani Collins
Journal Correspondent

investments come bigger than buying a new car, which is why we asked one foothills dealership owner a few key questions.

Tom Rubino, 49, President and owner of Pioneer
Motors, Grass Valley

Q: How long have you been in business?
A: “We’ve been in business for 24 years. Most of our shoppers are repeat customers or their friends who’ve been referred to us and that is extraordinary in our industry. I think one of the reasons for this is that we try to find the car that best fits our clients and not just whatever we have in stock. If we don’t have what our customers want, we go out and find it for them. We’ve been voted best dealership in Grass Valley for 12 straight years for that exact reason.”

ertified farmers and community vendors come together each week to not only sell their goods but also share as part of a community effort. Amidst the beautiful setting of the North Star House designed by Julia Morgan in 1905, the Nevada County Growers Market flourishes. “35 years strong, we continue to grow,” said Kriss Stillman, market manager. Original vendors Tofte Farm and John Drew of Bakbraken Acres (both of Chicago Park) continue to participate while new vendors are welcomed every year. A community event, the Nevada County

you get hungry, stop by the food vendors including Smiley’s Smokehouse. Wander through the booths amidst live local music. The Nevada County Growers Market rotates six different musical groups. Some are strolling minstrels while others perform by the food vendors. “We are a family friendly market. We encourage people to bring their children. The first Saturday of each

month we have a free local artist’s art project with kids. Mim Meakin conducts children events. They make masks, Christmas ornaments and greeting cards. Every time she visits she has a new project. It’s free for any child who wants to participate,” Stillman said. “On the third Saturday of every month Jerry’s tooling hosts free ironworking projects for kids. They’ve made sun catchers, wind chimes and jewelry.” “It’s a fun community event,” Stillman said. “Patrons support local farmers who are all certified and approved by the local agricultural commissioner. There are also certified organic produce vendors.

Cohelan sells jams, jellies, relishes, cooking sauces and pickles in season. “I am a certified grower so the produce I can is either something I’ve grown or something from my friends at the farmers market,” Cohelan said. “It’s really fun for me. I’ll buy apples one week then make applesauce and bring it to the market the next week.” In addition to the Saturday market, Nevada County Growers Markets also take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ❖

1. How long has the Nevada County Walkers Club been around?

more extreme. We also go to activities like the Grass Valley Downtown Art Festival, and the

2. How often do you meet up to walk?
Six days at week, sometimes seven for a special hike. Some days have more than one activity. We play bocce ball every other Tuesday at Pioneer Park. Sometimes we have game nights. It’s like a potluck; everyone brings a dish and their favorite game. We also have a Bunco night. We volunteer in the community. We do trail maintenance and participate in the world wide Clean the Water Day in September at Englebright Lake.

Nevada County free concerts in Pioneer Park. We also have are yearly twonight camping trip in the Lake Basin area. We climb the Sierra Buttes on that trip.

3. About how many people join the walks?
Usually around 15 people join the walks. It’s always a different 15. We had a moonlike kayaking event and about 20 people came out. 15 of them I didn’t see again until the next kayaking event. There is always someone new to meet and get to know along the trail.

5. What are the benefits of walking?
Socializing, which is a benefit for folks over 60 and retired. It is also a great way to stay healthy. It’s the least expensive way to exercise your heart and cardio vascular system. Walking keeps me in shape and helps mobility and balance. Physically, walking is the best thing you can do. There is always someone new to get to know. We are like minded and have many things in common. We enjoy the outdoors. Members can bring their dog as long as it complies with the law. Members can even bring their children or grandchildren. It’s a great way to spend time with them. Anyone can start walking, even if you have a cane or walker. On Wednesdays we have an elderly/recovering from an illness group that walk around the fairgrounds for about an hour. Members can graduate to more advanced levels.

4. Where are places you explore?
On Tuesdays at 9 a.m. we walk around Empire Mine State Park and on Fridays at 9 a.m. we walk Hirschman trail. In the spring and summer time we go on wildflower hikes. We start at lower elevations in spring and work our way up. In spring we start at Table Mountain in Oroville and by the end of summer we are hiking up at Mount Judah. Most of our hikes are seven miles; some of the special hikes are

Soap box derby fills the need for speed
Entries reach up to 40mph down hill
By Laura Albright
Marketplace Correspondent

H

old on folks, because it’s Soap Box Derby time.

On Saturday, June 22, 41 to 42 teams will race nearly 1/2 mile downhill on Nimrod Street in Nevada City (powered only by gravity) while being judged for creativity, speed and team spirit. Rich Bodine of Nevada County found himself researching soap box derbies for his local Cub

starting after the lottery entry in January. Each team member must be 18 years or older. Cars are judged based upon speed or artistic flair with three trips down the track. The cars designed for speed Pictured is a 2011 soap box entry can exceed 40 “Chariot” featuring Gary Apple. miles per hour. “Our goal is to have fun and raise money while we’re doing it,” Bodine said. “When we started we used the Portland model, but we wanted our own fundraising ideas and benefit. Pioneer park has been around since 1929 and is the biggest park in Nevada City. We wanted the funds produced by the derby to go toward fixing up the park and adding amenities,” Bodine said. “With the racing teams entry fee, sponsors, vendor fees and vendor donations, we’re able to raise quite a bit of money for the park.” In past years the derby has raised enough funds to add a Bocci Ball court and seating area. These improvements were done in conjunction with an Eagle Scout project. Just a few of the vendors included AJA Video Systems, Telestream, Ed Sweeny, Mike Bratton of State Farm Insurance, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Ridge Feed, The Union, KVMR and KNCO. (The last three have also entered derby cars.) Gary and Gloria Apple will be returning for their third time this year. With their “Mr. Potato Head” entry. “At eight feet tall it will go 40 plus miles per hour down the hill,” Gary Apple said. “And every race it may look a little different.” “I’m really surprised at how many people in our area and beyond our area have gotten wind of this event and can identify with it. Maybe they want to just be a kid again. It takes little money and technical skills. It’s for everyone. It’s a good Americana event,” Apple said. ❖ May 15, 2013

Scouts pack. In his research he found a long standing adult soap box derby event in Portland, Oregon.

Soap box “Big Fish”, featuring from left Rich Bodine, Gloria Apple and Gary Apple was entered in the 2012 Portland and Nevada City derbies.

“I was immediately inspired,” Bodine said. “I contacted the Portland group and asked if they wouldn’t mind if we borrowed their ideas. And they said yes. It took off pretty quick and now it’s our third annual event.” Bodine has helped organize many other events in the Grass Valley and Nevada County area, but said, “The derby is by far the most community event I’ve been involved with. It isn’t just the club members, but the entire community that gets involved. Our first year we had over 4,500 spectators.” An estimated 90 percent of the teams are local. This year 39 of the entries are local community members and two are from outlying communities: Yuba City and Sacramento. Each team of three, comprised of a driver, pit crew and volunteer designs, builds and enters their soap box car 22 Nevada County Marketplace
