About the Scholar Recognition Program
The program began as an Otsego County Chamber of Commerce initiative. It has grown to be a program that enhances relationships between the business community, schools, and institutions of higher and continuing education while recognizing outstanding scholastic achievement by a member of the graduating classes of the public, private and parochial secondary schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory areas. The program also recognizes teachers nominated by each student scholar for having a significant and beneficial influence on his/her education. Student representatives are chosen on the basis of scholarship, as well as leadership and service to his or her school and community. Teachers can be from any grade level and any subject areas, from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Scholar Recognition planning committee consists of representatives of Mang Insurance, DCMO BOCES, ONC BOCES, Catskill Area School Study Council, SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick, SUNY Delhi, USC/The Business College, The Daily Star, and Alan Lincourt Photography. In this booklet, you will see a brief profile of each selected student and teacher to be honored, along with a profile on the sponsors who have made this program possible. Enjoy!

Maria Andrews is inquisitive, talented, selfless, and humble. Maria is academically at the top of her class and has challenged herself with nearly all of the upper level courses offered at Afton Central School. She appreciates the challenge of critical thinking, and devours books. Maria is a young lady who does not easily recognize her own accomplishments, yet continually strives to take on more for the good of others. She gives her time to many areas in the community, including her local church and soup kitchen. Maria is a gifted musician, both vocally and instrumentally, and lends her talents to sporting events and many school activities. She has received countless academic honors throughout high school and has taken advantage of nearly every opportunity presented to her. Maria is an extremely responsible and impressive young lady and very deserving of this honor.

Lucille Dwyer Mrs. Dwyer has been a huge influence in my academic career since I was very young. She helped me in both third and sixth grade to improve my reading and writing ability which until then had been sorely lacking. Spelling will always be difficult for me but I am so grateful to her for opening up to me the worlds that books offer to everyone. She is my role model and I aspire to have her optimistic outlook on life, and her talent of connecting with others.

Jeff Rhone* Teachers are bound to affect their students in some way, but my teacher Jeff Rhone has made a big impact on my life. He has become a friend as well as a teacher. I learned so much from Mr. Rhone, but not just Spanish verbs. Mr. Rhone never sweats the little things and is always there to help, which are two qualities that I really admire about him. He always wants us to improve ourselves in every way possible. I hope that one day I can be as upbeat and supportive as my teacher Mr. Rhone.

She hopes to one day be a successful doctor.

Dorian Bunting-Cliffe* Mrs. Bunting-Cliffe is the orchestra teacher at Bainbridge-Guilford High School; however, many of her students start playing stringed instruments at a young age. She serves as a mentor for me because she goes above and beyond the duties of teaching. Mrs. Bunting-Cliffe has a true passion for not only music, but working with kids, and she positively influences each of her students with this love for music education. In high school, it is nice to have someone to look up to and help you understand life’s lessons. Mrs. Bunting-Cliffe has gone above and beyond being a teacher, in order to be a positive role model for me and impact my life in a special way.

Tom Fralick Mr. Fralick doesn’t teach for the money; it is clear that he genuinely enjoys every second of his job. He knows all his students personally and is receptive of their varying learning styles. His lessons are always easy to understand, practical, interactive, and above all, enjoyable. Whether it was launching soda bottle rockets in Cub Scouts, experimenting with lasers in Physics class, or writing ukulele jams to help us remember Avogadro’s number, Mr. Fralick has always sparked my interest, proving that science can be fun while at the same time showing its application in the real world.

Cooperstown Central School
Hope Dohner

Sponsored by Mirabito Energy Products

Hope D. Dohner’s determination and academically competitive nature make her an admirable student. She has incredible insight and dedication to the practice of learning. This immense passion for learning, cloaked by a genuine sincerity and multitude of questions, is Hope’s most admirable trait. Her ability to ask insightful questions leads beyond the scope of classroom application, and she approaches the most complex situations with a calm and unwavering nature. While many individuals stare at the clock satisfied with the time, the select few continue to ask, “How does it work?” Hope is one of these individuals. Hope’s passion for understanding and explaining the physical world is present in her daily life and has inspired many of her peers to read and lead discussions pertaining to current science research. Hope’s fervent curiosity and research has blossomed throughout high school and will continue to grow as she attends college for mechanical engineering. Joseph M. Powers, Jr. I am so lucky to have had Mr. Joseph Powers as my Physics teacher. I had loved physics even before I began studying it, and his natural ability to expound on physics concepts in many different ways spurred my curiosity and passion. He has guided me by instruction and example to explain simply and to ask decisively; his intellect and sense of humor make for fantastic conversations. My passion and my self-assurance would be nowhere near their current level if it were not for his talent as a teacher and for his friendship as a fellow physics fanatic.

She proves her focus and willingness to learn daily, pursuing academic and personal success with intensity and integrity. Her diligence, her insight, and her clear perspective have translated to swift success. Seemingly shy, when called upon, or when she feels it necessary, she speaks with insight and conviction, effectively articulating her well-founded ideas. Not surprisingly, she enjoys the sincere respect of both students and faculty. There is little question that Sarah Clark will successfully pursue whatever goal she chooses and quietly inspire others in the process.

David Ainsworth Mr. Ainsworth has pushed my mind in directions I didn’t know existed. Through his guidance I have learned how to gain more insight from literature and art in general. This has deepened my perception of the world and my understanding of certain areas. Through the Creative Writing Club, which he advises, and many compositions, I have learned how to express myself in new and subtle ways. Furthermore, he has bent a listening ear and encouraged me to reach for new levels of satisfaction along the way.

Hunter-Tannersville Central School
Stephanie Lane

Sponsored by Mang Insurance

I have had the pleasure of working with Stephanie for three years. In her freshman year, Stephanie struggled and was faced with a choice: give up or step up. Fortunately, Stephanie chose to step up. She utilized every resource available to help her succeed. She came to school ready to learn and determined to apply herself. She rewrote papers, made the most of AIS, and stayed after school for extra help. Eventually, Stephanie became an independent learner, honing her active reading skills and ability to synthesize ideas gained in class and through her own research. I am most proud of the way Stephanie challenged herself. While many of her peers sought the easier path, Stephanie enrolled in challenging courses like Shakespeare, chemistry, AP English and Italian. It is Stephanie’s commitment to growing and challenging herself that will ensure her future success. She is an exemplary role model for all struggling students. William Burch* Mr. Burch has helped me throughout high school by being there for me. He made his class fun and interesting, so I started to do better in his class and actually tried to do my best. Then, he was told by other teachers how I was not doing so well in their classes while he was boasting about how well I was doing in his class. When he found out that I was doing poorly in the other classes he pulled me aside and basically inspired me to do better in not just his class but all of my classes. He inspired me by telling me how I should do my best because I was a smart kid who was being lazy when it came to school. After that day and his talk to me about doing better, I started to try harder. Now I am going to college to further my goals. I also know if I need help with anything he will be there for me.

Laurens Central School
Josiah Wenck

Sponsored by Kelly Zack-Decker

What can one say about a student that consistently works on developing his skills in everything he attempts? His parents are no doubt thrilled, classmates are encouraged and challenged, and teachers are both pleased and keenly satisfied. In an educational climate where mediocrity tends to reign supreme, it is refreshing teaching and observing such a student as he diligently applies what is being taught, questions what may he may not completely understand, and then works to create products that each of those mentioned previously can truly appreciate and be proud of his academic achievements. Josiah Wenck is this type of an individual. His work ethic is commendable; his personality and sense of humor very enjoyable; and his prospects for future growth and development will be a joy for all who have shared in his growth. So simply put: congratulations Josiah on being selected as a student scholar and, thank you! Tom Tirado Mr. Tirado has been my high school English teacher for the past few years. During these years, he has proven himself an individual that exhibits characteristics of honesty, kindness, thoughtfulness, as well as many other fine traits that provide for a comfortable working environment, which enhances the education of all his students. He constantly extends his actions beyond the duties of a teacher, spending his limited free time to help me and others improve their college essays. Mr. Tirado has made a huge impact in my education and I believe will continue to do so for all of his future students.

Kelly Zack-Decker As an alumna of Laurens Central School, class of 1987, I am honored to sponsor Laurens Central School. Congratulations Josiah and Mr. Tirado. You are both deserving of this recognition. I, along with your families, friends, fellow students, and educators are proud of your accomplishments and the contributions you make to your school and community. I trust that you will both continue to pursue excellence in all that you do.

His willingness to help others, even when not asked, is one of his greatest assets. Due to Sean’s strong work ethic and friendly persona, he will no doubt be successful in everything he does.

Paige Harris I have chosen to nominate my engineering, calculus and physics teacher Ms. Harris. She is a great teacher. She has given my class some wonderful engineering projects to teach us various engineering principles. She also has a deep understanding of Calculus and Physics and passes that knowledge on to me. She has made my senior year fun because every day when I come to class I learn a new thing. I enjoy her classes and she has taught me so much about engineering this year.

Early in his senior year he demonstrated his leadership ability by being a major force behind The Kindness Revolution at Milford, a new school-wide program to heighten awareness of bullying. Eli enjoys sports and played soccer with a passion. In addition, each spring Eli would compete in the 400 hurdles with temperatures near freezing and snow in the air. It is always a treat to hear Eli’s drumming at musical events. Eli has become an accomplished and creative drummer. Eli is highly motivated, challenges himself, and takes his academic achievements seriously. This year Eli is participating in a college preparatory engineering program. Next year he will continue these studies at RPI. As a hard working student, Eli has the character, motivation, creativity, and intelligence to succeed in all he does. James Austin* Quirky, interesting and intriguing are a few words I may use to describe my long time mathematics teacher Mr. Austin. I first met Mr. Austin in eighth grade taking Algebra. This was my first experience with his outrageous humor and undying love of mathematics. I was eager to return, not only because of the way he taught the material, but also the connection he formed with his students. Mr. Austin and I have shared many longwinded conversations about our love of jazz music and soccer. He is a frequent audience member at performances and has become a dear friend to me in my last year of high school. I thank Mr. Austin for all his help and guidance. I will miss my fellow mathematics enthusiast next year.

Andrea Robertson I will never forget Mrs. Robertson. She has always gone beyond her duties as a teacher to help me in any way possible. In ninth grade my science fair partner and I were able to attend a conference to see actual research related to our project. We reached beyond our own expectations and won first place, and I believe it is because Mrs. Robertson allowed us to see the real world applications of our project. She has also helped me through many personal challenges with support and encouragement. It is teachers like Mrs. Robertson who have made me love school.

Larry Miller Mr. Miller has had a great influence on me over the last two years not only as a student, but also as an individual. He has taught me a great amount about heavy equipment and forestry. He has also taught me how to deal with different types of problems and situations and how to step back and think about what to do to increase safety and overall production before acting. William Clemons* Mr. Clemons really is as great as everyone says. I only had him for one semester in Anthropology class, but during that time he led me to think beyond the usual textbook answers. Mr. Clemons once stayed after school with me for over two hours because I had asked for help on a college application essay. What other teacher is that dedicated to his students? Mr. Clemons goes out of his way to relate to each one of his students and to make them feel special, and that is one of the many reasons he is such a good teacher.

Jeff Crockett What does every teacher do throughout our education? They teach. Some are mentors, others role models, some like a parent, or even a friend—but there are a few teachers throughout our education that make a difference in our lives. These teachers specifically go out of their way to help you, make time to catch you up, share jokes and hold intelligent conversations with you. They take time to teach you a subject you’re not scheduled to take, and stay after school whenever you need. They teach you to the fullest, making class a fun environment and fuel your thirst for knowledge. They push and really teach you. That is what Mr. Crockett has done for me; he is that teacher.

Jessica DeVries If you asked Mrs. Jessica DeVries how many children she had she would replay, “six, but one’s not mine by birth!” That sixth child is me. Over the past seven years Mrs. DeVries has been a very special person in my life, being there to make sure I was set up for success in life. Mrs. DeVries has been my second mother in a number of ways. Unatego Central School
Katrina Clark

Sponsored by Country Club Auto Group

Katrina Clark, a senior at Unatego High School, is a three season athlete (soccer, basketball, and track) who also writes for our school’s newspaper and is an active member of the National Honor Society. Academically, Katrina is an excellent student whose drive and dedication to her studies has been a constant. Yet Katrina’s true talent is in the arts. Not only does she have a true gift with a pencil or a paintbrush in producing exquisite works of art, Katrina’s creative eye works in other venues as well. Planning on majoring in film in college, Katrina hopes to craft films that address societal issues as well as to simply capture and retell amazing stories of people. To that end she has already directed and produced short films including a moving piece dramatizing the potential impact of cuts to education that was forwarded to our local representatives. In short, Katrina is an incredible individual who is going to achieve any dream she pursues. Jennifer Mileski Ms. Mileski is not only an amazing teacher, more importantly, she is an amazing person. Few people radiate an inexpressible positivity and warmth that others benefit from, but she does so with ease. She has so much passion for what she teaches and it is this passion that has pushed me to change my once rather pragmatic mentality. We all claim we understand that we should do what we love, but she has truly shown me this by challenging me to think differently. I strive to be like her constantly by equaling her passion in my own pursuits.

Laurel Carpenter* Mrs. Carpenter has been an inspiration to me for years. She has been my pastor’s wife for the longest time, but she has also been one of the many guardian angels God has sent to watch over me. Without her resilience and her desire to trust God through all odds, I would not know what it meant to really respect someone. She demands excellence; she demands the best of everybody, which I believe is one of the many things that have made me so determined to give everything I have to everything I do.

Michael Freeman

Sponsored by Kraft

I am not surprised at all by Michael’s recognition as a scholar. He embodies the word in every means possible. Whether he is in school or out in the community; whether he is leading a Student Council event, practicing a speech for Forensics or Drama Club, or working to make our community a better place in an Eagle Scout project, Michael never ceases to amaze. He is a powerful and inspirational young man who loves to learn and to study. Not only does he dazzle those around him with his dedication and commitment to learning, but he inspires us all, students and teachers alike, to be and do better. Michael is someone who is destined to change the world by leading, teaching, and modeling the highest degree of morality, academic integrity, consideration for others, and a genuine pursuit for excellence.

Simone Tucker If a student has ever said that no teacher cares about their students, Mrs. Tucker is living proof that the student is wrong. I have never encountered a teacher so willing to give her all to students who too often give nothing back. Mrs. Tucker’s compassion shines through in numerous ways. She is involved in nearly every one of my extracurricular activities and supported me every step of the way, picking up the ball where other teachers have let it drop. Her selfless efforts and unending support make Mrs. Tucker an inspiration to all who know her, myself included.

Her honors include GCMEA All-County band, GCMEA All-County chorus, and GCMEA All-County jazz band. For the past three summers, she has participated in the New York Summer Music Festival where she has had the honor of receiving instruction from faculty members at Julliard and the Manhattan School of Music. Nina’s extracurricular activities at WAJ include being the co-treasurer of the senior class, manager of the Softball team, and a member of the National Honor Society. Her volunteer work includes GCCA Sprouts Program and the WAJ Traveling Christmas Group. Nina is the daughter of Mr. Anthony Savasta and Mrs. Dawn Savasta. In the fall she plans to attend either the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam or Hartwick College. Leslie Beauregard My most influential teacher would have to be Mrs. Leslie Beauregard, my instrumental music teacher. Mrs. Beauregard has influenced me with her passion for teaching and compassion for her students. Mrs. Beauregard is a teacher who goes out of her way to make sure that her students are well-prepared for anything that comes their way. Seeing this dedication and seeing her having fun while teaching her students inspired me to pursue a music career, because I wanted to experience the fun for myself. I admire her love for what she does and feel honored to have worked with her.

She has given me a phenomenal foundation in science, specifically biology. Her teaching style is unique; it is more interactive and she puts a lot of effort into making sure her students understand the material. Mrs. Head helped to spark an interest in science for me and made choosing what I want to do in the future much easier. I’m choosing to study nursing and I’m confident with this decision because of what Mrs. Head has taught me.
