mountains’ majesty
Acclaimed as a top outdoor adventure destination, the Asheville area’s mountains are some of North America’s oldest. Catch a sunrise or sunset from the Blue Ridge Parkway, America’s favorite scenic highway. Or visit one of hundreds of waterfalls in nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park or Pisgah National Forest. Hike a trail through ancient laurels and rhododendron. The mountains surrounding Asheville offer an abundance of adventures in the highest peaks in the Eastern United States.

contagious creativity
There’s a passion for creativity in Asheville that inspires. In the River Arts District, you’ll find more than 165 artists showcasing new work. The Downtown Asheville Art District boasts 30 galleries within a walkable half-mile radius and features nationally known and regional artists. Street musicians entertain you. And harmonies, both old and new, resonate from our many performance venues.

a celebration of everything good
Asheville natives love to celebrate, keeping the festival calendar full year round. In the summer, there are weekly showcases of traditional mountain music and dance, and downtown street music festivals featuring new bands. Take part in a celebration of food, fine arts and innovation from fall to spring. To see a full listing of festivals, visit ExploreAsheville.com/ events.

do it your way
n the mood for craft-brewed beer, music at sunset, dancing under the stars or a morning hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway? How about a hot-stone massage to ease tired muscles, a visit to Biltmore – America’s largest home, a trolley ride, a wacky comedy tour unlike any other, or dinner at one of the many certified green restaurants that have made Asheville America’s Greenest Dining Destination? All this and more are waiting for you in Asheville … any way you like it.

grandeur at its best
Biltmore is America’s largest home and a mustsee. The family home of George W. Vanderbilt provides a rare look into the 19th century’s Gilded Age and the sumptuous French-inspired chateau. After the house and gardens tour, sample the fruits of this working estate’s vineyards at Biltmore Winery and explore Antler Hill Village. With acres of bike paths, hiking trails and river sports, a full Biltmore experience may take several days. The Summer Concert Series on the Library Lawn offers a chance to hear music with a picturesque backdrop.

beer city, usa
Asheville was named Beer City USA four years in a row, and with good reason. With 16 craft breweries (and counting), the arrival of Sierra Nevada and future home to New Belgium, the Asheville area is brew heaven. Pick up a brewery map at the Asheville Visitor Center and stroll through town to sample the latest handcrafted brew. An Asheville Brews Cruise or Amazing Pubcycle will introduce you to the best of what’s being brewed. Local events such as the Winter Warmer Beer Festival in January, Beer City Festival in June, Brewgrass Festival in September and Oktoberfest in October sell out fast, so get your tickets early.

family time = fun time
A trip to the Asheville area means fun for everyone in the family. Try a mild or wild raft trip on one of the many rivers, slip and slide on Pisgah National Forest’s Sliding Rock, and get wet in Pack Square Park’s Splasheville! Go airborne with a zipline canopy tour or see wildlife at the Western North Carolina Nature Center. Biltmore’s Antler Hill Village gives visitors a first-hand look at gardens and farm animals, and the estate’s Outdoor Adventure Center provides activities for young and old alike. If you’re a baseball fan, be sure to catch an Asheville Tourists game in the city’s downtown baseball stadium.

going to the dogs
Asheville is a pet-loving city. Just ask the team at DogFriendly.com, where Asheville made the list of Top 10 Dog-Friendly Resort Areas. It’s not unusual to see a dog lapping from a water dish next to his humans while they sip wine at one of Asheville’s many alfresco dining venues. There are plenty of places that allow pets, from petfriendly cabin rentals and inns to hotels. Canine and feline visitors can even get a massage or spa treatment and take home a handmade treat or toy.

asheville in print
Thomas Wolfe, O. Henry and Carl Sandburg helped establish a rich Asheville literary tradition that continues to inspire writers. More recently, several local novelists have put Asheville back in the spotlight.

Thomas Wolfe, Look Homeward, Angel (1929)

O. Henry (1909)

say cheers!
Shaken not stirred, frozen, on the rocks or neat. Locally crafted moonshine, gin and bourbon have inspired Asheville’s mixologists to create concoctions like Eclipse of the Moon, Ginny Hendrix and Moonswine Mary. And what better accompaniment to your favorite cocktail than live music? The city’s lounges, bars and entertainment venues are laid-back yet define vintage elegance. You’ll find music nightly in one of dozens of venues in Asheville, Black Mountain and Weaverville.

doing downtown
W
alk down Asheville’s historic streets and you can feel the buzz – that energy that happens when independent, creative people come together to share their talents and extend their hospitality. This is a walking city, with surprises around every corner. Colorful Art Deco buildings sit side-by-side with art galleries and fashionable shops, featuring everything from fine crafted jewelry to handmade chocolates. And wherever you go, there is the music of the mountains.

Download the magazine app for more downtown sights.

tastes of foodtopia®
Our mountain spirit and locavore sensibilities have created a food community that transcends the farm-to-table movement. Chefs here take inspiration from local and fresh ingredients. Dine at one of hundreds of independent restaurants, and you’ll find Asheville-produced artisanal cheeses, grass-fed meat, farmfresh vegetables from one of many tailgate markets and spicy condiments on the menu. We lovingly call it Foodtopia®. It’s a place where every bite is savored and meals are a celebration to be shared.

Conde Nast Traveler named Asheville one of the friendliest cities in the United States in 2013.
walk through history
Complementing the many hiking trails in the forests and parks that surround Asheville is the 1.7-mile Urban Trail. This “museum without walls” offers a winding walk through downtown Asheville that highlights significant places and events in the city’s history. Each stop is marked with art, 30 bronze sculptures in all, that honors the rich cultural traditions and brings history to life.

destination art
Inspired by mountain scenery and past innovators like Rafael Guastavino and John Cage, artists and art collectors have been attracted to the area for decades. Awaken your own creativity by visiting galleries and studios, and take home one-of-a-kind art to inspire for a lifetime. Fine art from nationally known and local artists are on exhibit at 30 galleries and the Asheville Art Museum in the Downtown Asheville Art District. A walking tour of the River Arts District lets visitors experience working artists’ studios. The Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway is home to the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Crafts by Guild artists can also be found at a Guild Shop in Historic Biltmore Village and on Tunnel Road in East Asheville. Art lovers will find more galleries in quaint downtown Black Mountain.

sounds of music
In Asheville, music resounds from unique venues to the streets. This is where the great Hungarian composer Bela Bartok came for inspiration, and where Gershwin first played Rhapsody in Blue for a small group of friends. Beginning with Cherokee rhythms and continuing through the jigs of ScotsIrish settlers, Asheville’s history is full of music. Today, it takes many forms and tempos, from the contemporary Moog Factory to the spontaneous Asheville Drum Circle. It’s easy to catch a live performance by nationally acclaimed artists in an intimate setting.

downtown’s square
Since 1797, Pack Square has been Asheville’s gathering place. Philanthropist George W. Pack gave the land to the city in 1901 with the stipulation that the historic square always be used as a public park. Today, Pack Square Park is where musicians perform, celebrations happen and good living takes center stage throughout the year. We invite you to cool off in a fountain, enjoy a picnic on the lawn or take in a free concert.

creative connections
sheville is where edgy artists blend with mainstream creativity and generations-old craft traditions to weave a rich tapestry of talent. Look beyond the colorful street performers, and you’ll find literary events, visual arts, craft demonstrations, eclectic concerts, dance performances and comedy – all the elements of a vibrant culture that make up the essence of Asheville.

A

inspiring beats
Appalachian mountain music finds its roots in the instruments and melodies of the Scots-Irish pioneers who settled in and around Asheville. The Blue Ridge Music Trails provide music lovers with a discovery guidebook and soundtrack to traditional music and dance in the greater Asheville area. Well-known performers like coming to Asheville for another reason. Just ask The Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, and Smashing Pumpkins, who have all recorded at the city’s Echo Mountain Recording Studio. Still others such as Gladys Knight, Warren Haynes, David Wilcox and David Holt now call Asheville home, drawn here by the city’s vibrant music scene and inspirational mountains.

gather by the river
Asheville’s riverfront was once home to textile and tobacco warehouses. Today, it is the River Arts District – a thriving community of artists who bring their own twist to ceramics, painting, photography, fiber arts, metal and woodworking. Pick up a map from the Asheville Visitor Center of the more than 100 studios. As you tour, stop in at an independent restaurant or brewery and say “hello” to a local.

stargazing
It all began in the silent film era when The Conquest of Canaan was filmed in Asheville. During the 1950s, Grace Kelly starred in The Swan filmed at Biltmore, while Robert Mitchum and Asheville were the stars of Thunder Road. Since then, the area has grown in popularity as a location for memorable films. Peter Sellers’ last movie, Being There, was filmed at Biltmore. Robin Williams walked Asheville’s neighborhoods while filming Patch Adams, as did the cast and crew of The Last of the Mohicans, starring Academy Award winner Daniel Day Lewis. Most recently, the area was the backdrop for The Hunger Games. Two recent film adaptations of novels by local author Ron Rash also have ties to Asheville: Serena, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, and The World Made Straight, starring Jeremy Irvine and Minka Kelly. Hollywood’s best actors and directors know a great location when they see one.

here’s nowhere better to renew and inspire love than in the Asheville area, where you’ll find something special and unexpected around every corner. Book a couples massage at one of the area’s day spas or relax together in a Japanese hot tub, stroll hand-in-hand through Biltmore Village, sip a glass of pinot noir in a cozy wine bar, or picnic on Biltmore’s grounds. It’s all here for the taking.

romantic adventures
Let romance and adventure take your breath away with a visit or honeymoon that includes rafting ancient waters, hot-air ballooning above the Blue Ridge Mountains, ziplining through treetops or hiking Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. When you come back down to earth, drink in the scenery from The Omni Grove Park Inn’s Sunset Terrace, or savor the flavor of handmade dark chocolates paired with fine red wine or champagne at one of the city’s many cocktail bars with a view.

orth Carolina boasts more zipline tours than any other Eastern state, and Asheville’s forest, mountain-to-mountain, treetop and urban canopy tours make it easy to get airborne. More pedestrian pursuits include hiking the rhododendron-lined Craggy Pinnacle Trail and paths in DuPont State Park, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, where Katniss and Peeta navigated to freedom in The Hunger Games. Climb Chimney Rock State Park’s winding trails to the top of the “chimney,” where the world spreads out and you can see forever.

up close and personal
The Western North Carolina Nature Center is the perfect place to meet Asheville’s first inhabitants. Here you’ll see frisky river otters, red wolves, black bears, the reclusive American hellbender and more. At Chimney Rock State Park’s Flock to the Rock, bird watchers can observe fall migrations. This natural wonder is home to bald eagles, peregrine falcons, great blue herons and pileated woodpeckers. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to many native and endangered species, including river otter, elk and the red-cockaded woodpecker, so be sure to bring binoculars.

navigate uncharted waters
Travel down Asheville’s French Broad River, one of the oldest rivers in the world, any way you want in this city that has been recognized as one of America’s Best River Towns by Outside magazine. Adventurous paddlers can learn stand-up paddleboarding – the newest paddling adventure – or test their skills maneuvering the river’s challenging currents and Class IV rapids north of Asheville. Novice river riders can enjoy relaxing tubing trips along the Swannanoa and French Broad rivers right in Asheville or sliding down Sliding Rock. When it’s time to relax, try one of our many swimming holes.

estled in the highest mountain peaks in the Eastern United States and just east of Asheville, Black Mountain offers small-town charm commingled with artists and unique culinary venues. Once home to the famous experimental Black Mountain College, where designer Buckminster Fuller taught and engineered the first practical geodesic dome, the town continues a tradition of artistic expression and free-spiritedness that can be found in its shops, museums and historic inns.

new south energy
Biltmore Town Square’s high-end shopping district is located in South Asheville. This pedestrianfriendly area offers one-of-a-kind stores with that distinctive Asheville flair and a weekly tailgate market in the warmer months, as well as national retailers and a variety of restaurants. From June through October, Biltmore Town Square becomes a soundstage for musicians who perform at free Concerts in the Park.

small-town charm
Just north of Asheville is Weaverville, a small-town community lined with bed-and-breakfasts, art studios and locally owned restaurants. Find history here, too, at the nearby Vance Birthplace, the log cabin that was home to Governor Zebulon B. Vance.

bohemia at its best
Just a five-minute drive from downtown across the French Broad River is West Asheville. It’s a destination in itself, with a thriving historic district, vintage shops full of fashions from the past, unique retail, brewpubs featuring seasonal beers and local music, and bakeries that turn out flaky pastries and fresh coffee all day long. This neighborhood is also home to nationally acclaimed creative chefs who share their dishes daily.

olorful greens, farm-tofork delights, food trucks, tailgate markets, elaborate handmade breads and pastries, craft liquors and authentic dining experiences. That’s what it means to be a locavore. Asheville’s independently owned restaurants and rich farming traditions combine to provide holistic dining experiences grounded in Southern Appalachian food seasoned with the spice of life. cheese lovers rejoice
The Western North Carolina Cheese Trail is a cooperative effort by many of the region’s farmstead and artisan cheese producers to showcase locally made goat and cow’s milk cheeses. This self-guided driving tour offers plenty of farms to see and cheese to sample in Buncombe County and its neighbors up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway. From cheddar to chevre to blue, these farms provide visitors with a taste of the art and science of fine cheese-making. Pick up a map at the Asheville Visitor Center, or go to ExploreAsheville.com/ foodtopia to download a map.

farm-to-fork fame
Asheville helped pioneer the farm-to-table movement more than a decade ago and hasn’t looked back. Today, small, independent farms provide local restaurants with produce, fruit, cheese and meat, making the 50-mile diet a staple of Asheville’s independent restaurants. In the hands of talented chefs, many of whom have received regional and national culinary awards, these ingredients become delicious creations. With accolades from Food & Wine, GQ and Garden & Gun, there is no end in sight to the innovative, naturally inspired dishes that grace restaurant tables throughout the area.

celebrating all year long
The culinary year kicks off with Restaurant Week in January where eateries showcase the cuisine that creates Foodtopia®. Now in its 10th year, the Artisan Bread Bakers Festival brings the nation’s best bakers to Asheville in mid-February for teaching and tasting. Look for parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, along with a selection of healing plants, at the 25th anniversary of the Herb Festival at the WNC Farmers Market in early May. Black Mountain’s family-friendly Sourwood Festival in August is a tribute to the tree and the bees that produce the finest honey. The Asheville Food & Wine Festival , a three-day event in late August, brings together local restaurants, craft beer and spirits, and artisan foods. Weekly chef challenges are held in the spring, with the region’s top chefs competing for the title prize. In September, Asheville Greek Festival celebrates with music, dance and exotic flavors. In late October, Pack Square comes alive with klezmer music and the HardLox Jewish Food and Heritage Festival . The Asheville Independent Restaurants celebrate with food and libations in November at the Taste of Asheville.

Asheville, recognized for its independent chefs, was named one of the Tastiest Towns in the South by Southern Living.

spirits in a spirited city
It was moonshine that spawned many a Southern legend. Now this homegrown liquor is gaining new respect in the hands of Asheville’s craft moonshine makers such as Troy & Sons and Howling Moon Distillery. With 16 craft breweries and five beer festivals, there is no shortage of seasonal beers and old favorites to enjoy at area brewpubs and bars. Cider, or honey wine, is another old and glorious beverage enjoying a renaissance in Asheville. Look for locally crafted spirits and sake at local bars and on restaurant menus.

here’s nothing like shopping in Asheville, where we like all things local. Take advantage of one of the many craft festivals, art walks and studio strolls throughout the year to find that something special. Whenever you visit, you’re sure to find just what you’re looking for. From festive clothing and glistening beads to gemstones, on-trend footwear, vintage fashions, national brands, and treats for Fido, Asheville’s many shopping districts are full of unusual, handmade items to suit every taste.

T

splendid shopping
With dozens of shopping districts, there is no shortage of original gifts. Sip champagne while searching for a rare first edition or peruse pottery in the historic Grove Arcade. Choose a piece of clothing or accessory on Wall Street. Fine art is on display in 30 stunning galleries in the Downtown Asheville Art District. Walk through the River Arts District, where you can buy a piece directly from the artist. Historic Biltmore Village and Biltmore Park in South Asheville offer national brands alongside quaint shops and eateries. Or poke around in one of several antique warehouses nearby. Meander through charming downtown Black Mountain or Weaverville for a handcrafted item. No matter where you choose to explore, we promise you’ll find a treasured object unlike any other.

fine art & crafts festivals
Fine and handcrafted arts are celebrated year round. Asheville Downtown Gallery Association Art Walks are every Friday from April through December. More than 25 participating galleries means there’s plenty to see. Celebrating its 13th year, the Weaverville Art Safari is a free, self-guided tour every spring and fall through the studios of artists living in Weaverville and nearby Barnardsville. The River Arts District Studio Strolls take place in June and November. Open studios are scattered throughout 19 historic buildings along the French Broad River and feature artists’ demonstrations and hands-on activities. The Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands brings together the creative work of Southern Highland Craft Guild members each July and October. The Big Crafty is a one-day event hosted in the summer and fall and showcases local indie artists and crafters. In August, Historic Biltmore Village comes alive with the Village Art & Craft Fair on the grounds of the historic All Souls Cathedral, featuring fine arts and crafts. East of Asheville, there’s plenty to see in the studios of artists in Black Mountain, East Asheville, Fairview and Swannanoa. The annual Blue to Black Art Weekend takes place in May and November. Spinning, knitting, weaving and felting are literally part of the fabric of Asheville. Don’t miss the annual Yarn and Fiber Crawl , a self-guided tour in mid-May.
