TODAY’S GAME: • The Generals open the 2014 home schedule today at 7:05 p.m. and play the first of five games with the Mississippi Braves. • RHP Taijuan Walker makes a rehab start for the Generals tonight. This will be his 40th start in a Jackson uniform. GENERALS RECAP: • Starter Jordan Pries and relievers Jordan Shipers, Stephen Shackleford and Stephen Kohlscheen combined to limit the Lookouts to only 2 hits as Jackson shutout Chattanooga 4-0 on Monday night. • Pries (6.0,1,0,0,0,1,HB) earned the win in his double-A debut, allowing only 1 hit in 6.0 scoreless innings. Shipers (1.1,0,0,0,1,0), Shackleford (0.2,0,0,0,0,0) and Kohlscheen (1.0,1,0,0,0,2) combined to hold the Lookouts scoreless over the final 3.0 innings. • LF Nate Melendres (3x4, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) led the team with 3 hits, while falling a home run short of hitting for the cycle. THE PRIDE OF POWDER SPRINGS, GEORGIA: • OF Jamal Austin has hit safely in 4 of the first 5 games he has appeared with 3 multi-hit games, batting .364 (8x22) with 1 run scored, 2 doubles, 4 RBI and 1 stolen base. BLASH CONTINUES TO BASH: • Jabari Blash continued his onslaught of the Southern League Thursday with his 10th home run in his first 30 Double-A games. • The grand slam on Thursday was his second as a General (last on Aug. 30, 2013 at Huntsville). • Blash has a hit in each of his first 5 games of 2014, batting .263 and leads the Southern League currently with 6 RBI. BREAKING DOWN THE ROSTER: • The Opening Day roster features 15 players with Double-A experience and 11 that participated in MLB spring training. • The average age is 23.7. PRYOR ON A REHAB ASSIGNMENT: • Mariners reliever Stephen Pryor, a native of nearby Ringold, GA begins a MLB rehab tonight. • Pryor was placed on the 15-day & 60-day disabled list April 15, 2013-end of season with a tear in his right latissimus dorsi muscle…included rehab assigments with Everett and Tacoma. • Pryor was placed on the DL to start 2014 recovering from surgery to repair the torn latisimus dorsi tendon in his right shoulder. AT THE HELM: • Jim Horner became the 10th manager in franchise history, taking over for Jim Pankovits. • Horner begins his 8th season in the Mariners organization and first in Jackson. He was the Manager for the High Desert Mavericks in 2013. GENERALS VS. MISSISSIPPI: • The Generals and M-Braves meet 10 times in 2014 with this being the only time they visit The Ballpark in Jackson. • The Generals went 9-6 against the Braves last season and are 87-87 all-time. • The Generals are 33-51 against the Braves in Jackson and 54-36 against the Braves at Trustmark Park, in Pearl, MS. WALKER ON A REHAB ASSIGMENT: • RHP Taijuan Walker was placed on the Seattle 15day disabled list to start the season with a right shoulder impingement. He pitched in minor league intrasquad games, but did not appear in an “A” game during the spring spring • He made one start for A+ High Desert on 4/4 vs. Inland Empire. • Walker was added to Jackson roster on 4/9 to continue rehab. THE BASEBALL VERSION OF RAY LEWIS: • 6-0, 255, 19-year-old RHP Victor Sanchez made his much anticipated Double-A debut Sunday afternoon. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 5.0 innings, walking none and stirking out 6. • Sanchez, at the age of 19 years 2 months and 7 days. Sanchez is the youngest player to make a start for Jackson. Taijuan Walker was 19 years, 7 months and 27 days when he made his first start on April 9, 2012. • Sanchez is rated by Baseball America as the No. 7 prospect in the Mariners’ organization. FROM JACKSON TO SEATTLE: • The Mariner selected RHP Dominic Leone on Friday before ever appearing in a Triple-A game. • Currently LHP Roenis Elias (made MLB debut on 4/3) and Leone have jumped straight from Jackson to Seattle. • Of the current Mariners roster their are 4 members of the 2013 Jackson roster. OF Abraham Almonte, SS Brad Miller, RHP Dominic Leone and LHP Roenis Elias. THAT’S A LOT OF STEPHEN’S: • The Generals currently have four pitchers with the first name Stephen. They are Stephen Kohlscheen, Stephen Landazuri, Stephen Pryor and Stephen Shackleford.
