o T e m o c l e W
Welcome to the City of Melrose! We are proud of our community for many reasons. Melrose is a beautiful place to live, with Big and Little Birch Lakes, Lake Sylvia and other nearby lakes. Enjoy fishing or just a day on the beach. The City sits on the banks of the Sauk River and straddles the Lake Wobegon Trail system, which has more than 46 miles of trails extending from St. Joseph to Osakis, with a branch north of Albany to Holdingford. We are also conveniently located on the I-94 corridor. Melrose is located midway between Alexandria and St. Cloud, Minnesota – just a half hour from either city.

A Word From The Mayor

e s o r l e M

According to the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association, historically, Melrose has had competitively low rates for electricity when compared with the entire State of Minnesota. This is not only attractive to our friendly residents, but it is also a benefit for business and industry. Melrose is a multi-cultural city with a diverse Hispanic population and has a wonderful authentic Mexican restaurant. The Melrose Historical Society Museum is a wonderful place to relive the past and to learn many interesting facts about our beautiful community. Melrose has a multi-park and green space system, two churches, and a lively downtown to serve its residents and visitors. The City has an excellent educational system comprised of public and private elementary schools and public middle and high schools. Melrose, through its cooperative efforts with CentraCare Health, offers state-of-the-art health care services to the community’s residents. These services are enhanced by the new 2009 medical clinic and hospital additions. In addition, this health care is augmented by pharmacy, dental, orthodontic, chiropractic and optometric services. Outreach specialists serve the community on a regular schedule. Finally, the City offers senior, congregate care, and assisted living facilities, along with age-in-place opportunities. Melrose has several large industries such as Jennie-O Turkey Store, Melrose Dairy Proteins, Stearns Electric Association, Melrose Metalworks, Inc. Leedstone, and Proliant Dairy, Inc. In addition, Carstens Industries is known for its fiberglass manufacturing including duck boats for Cabela’s sporting goods stores. Carstens Industries is also under contract to make the fiberglass hulls for one of our newest businesses, Warrior Boats, Inc. Melrose is home for the corporate headquarters of the 10-facility Central Minnesota Credit Union financial institution. Arvig also has a location in Melrose, with their state-ofthe-art communication services, along with their local programming channel. Recent retail additions to our community include Cornerstone Restaurant and Dollar General. For businesses - either retail, commercial or industrial - Melrose is the perfect place to set up shop. We are eager and willing to assist you in any way we can and have experienced staff available to work with you in your endeavor. You can be confident that all your needs can be met in our community and we hope you enjoy your stay. Melrose is a wonderful place to call home! If you are seeking a more permanent stay – and we hope you are – Melrose has a wide variety of housing opportunities to meet your needs and desires. For those with business-related interests, Melrose has a new Industrial Park located just off of I-94, experience with incentive and assistance programs, and a desire to help. Respectfully, Mayor Tim E. Vogel

The first permanent white settlers, including the Adleys and Wheelers, arrived in the Melrose area in 1857, gradually displacing the native Ojibwae and Dakota. The new town was originally called the Maineite Settlement, but probably the Adleys renamed it for their ancestral home, Melrose, Scotland.

History of Melrose
back to Waite Park 29 years later, it was a blow from which the town almost did not recover. Melrose has seen continuous progress ever since. Two granite companies, a brewery, a newspaper, several major manufacturing plants, many stores and services, churches, financial institutions, health facilities and a strong agricultural base helped it grow and flourish over the years. Today it has both a proud heritage and a vital future, as it has become a regional leader in medicine, manufacturing and communications.

Clark’s Flour Mill, Melrose, Minnesota, 1870.

Eventually Melrose had a hotel, stage coach station, post office, school and a few homes. But it didn’t begin to thrive until 1867, when cousins Edwin and William Clark arrived and bought the Adley property. The Clarks built (or possibly rebuilt) a dam and mill and began selling flour and grist. They built a block of brick buildings, opened stores, a bank and sawmill and brought the railroad to town. By the time Edwin, known as “the father of Melrose,” left in 1893, Melrose was a bustling community with churches, railroad depot and assorted stores and businesses. Settlers from New England were soon joined by Germans and Irish who were seeking better lives for their families, religious freedom, free land, new adventures, or escape from military service. Many Irish worked on the railroad, especially after 1894, when Melrose became a division point of the Great Northern. When the headquarters were transferred

Melrose is a community with excellent employment, good infrastructure and a productive agricultural base. Its location adjacent to I-94 in Central Minnesota’s lake country provides quick and easy access to business markets, abundant recreational opportunities, and a sensibly-paced lifestyle, all within an easy commute of major metropolitan markets. Two of the area’s largest manufacturing industries are located in Melrose. Jennie-O Turkey Store, Inc., one of the world’s largest turkey processing plants, employs over 800 people and processes 1.3 to 1.5 million live pounds of turkey per day. Most of these turkeys are grown within a 50- to 60-mile radius of the processing facility. Jennie-O Turkey Store, Inc. products are distributed to customers in all 50 states and approximately 40 foreign countries. Melrose Dairy Proteins, LLC is a milk-processing facility owned by Land O’ Lakes, Inc. and Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. With its approximately 130 employees, the company processes nearly 1.3 billion pounds of milk into over 130 million pounds of cheddar and Italianstyle cheeses annually. The company also supplies dairy permeate to Proliant Dairy Ingredients, Inc., a whey drying facility located adjacent to Melrose Dairy Proteins, LLC. CentraCare Health – Melrose is a 25-bed critical access hospital with an attached clinic, 75-bed skilled nursing home and a 41-unit senior independent apartment building with assisted living services available. A full range of health care services and convenient access to a variety of specialists are provided on this growing medical campus in Melrose. CentraCare Health – Melrose employs more than 250 people who serve nearly 10,000 residents in and around western Stearns County. According to the most recent statistics from the State Demographer in 2010, Melrose had a population of 3,601 with 1,315 housing units. While single-family residential construction has slowed in the past years, commercial and industrial construction has continued at a robust pace. In 2012, Melrose realized exponential growth in commercial and industrial development. From the opening of the Warrior Boats manufacturing facility, to the expansions of Melrose Metalworks, Carstens Industries and CCC, by year-end Melrose added 48,304 square feet of new construction. In addition, the downtown area welcomed Melrose City Meat Market and Main Street Nutrition. This, coupled with the new construction of Cornerstone Buffet & Restaurant and the Dollar General Store made Melrose one of the faster growing communities in the area. Melrose Public Utilities supplies electrical power for the City, while Stearns Electric Association supplies it for the surrounding communities. Arvig provides telephone, television, high-speed Internet services, voice and data networking and computer services to the area. There are six restaurants/fast food outlets, three banking facilities, three supermarkets/grocers and many other stores and services. The city has five parks, a golf course, a branch of the Great River Regional Library system and a weekly newspaper, The Melrose Beacon. Melrose’s most important asset is its people. Through their dedication, work ethic and values, they contribute to the community’s development and prosperity.

Agriculture Industry

The agriculture industry continues to be an integral part of Melrose’s success. Dairy and turkey, along with pork, beef and crops are the dominant agricultural industries in our area. The dairy industry continues to have traditional 60- to 90-cow farms with pipeline milkers, while most expansions now include a milking parlor, free stall cow housing, and dairy herds of 150 to 1000 cows. According to the 2010 Minnesota Agricultural Statistics, Stearns County had 67,000 dairy cows on 746 dairy farms with an average of 92 cows per farm. The average cow produced 19,600 pounds of milk annually compared to 10,000 pounds of milk produced annually in 1975. A few reasons for the increase are better feeding practices, improved genetics and also more attention shown to cow comfort. Stearns County is the #1 county in Minnesota for milk production, total milk cows and total cash receipts for livestock sales, along with cattle and calves on inventory.

There are a number of turkey farms in the area as well. A majority of them have contracts with Jennie-O Turkey Store to raise a certain number of birds. A majority of the turkeys that are contracted with Jennie-O Turkey Store are processed at the plant here in Melrose. There are also pork and beef producers in the area, however much of the hog finishing has gone to contract finishing, so not as many small farmers in the area have been choosing to raise pork. Cash crops are also raised in the Melrose area. These crops include corn, soybeans and alfalfa. Some of these crops will be sold to the feed mills in town or hauled to another site. The majority of the alfalfa that is raised as cash crops is sold locally to dairy farmers or brought to a hay auction. Stearns County is the #1 county in Minnesota for hay production and oat production. Another major change in the crop market for the area is the increase and expansion of ethanol plants in the area. The Melrose economy continues to be vibrant and is highly dependent on the agriculture industry.

Phase III is an organization which has provided over the last seven years physical, intellectual, social and wellness activities for the Melrose area’s older adults. The ultimate goal of Phase III is to see built in Melrose a state-of-the-art Wellness Center as an adjunct to our excellent existing health care delivery system. With over 440 dues-paying members from the outset, Phase III has used members’ dues to leverage a matching grant from the Initiative Foundation for drafting preliminary concept plans. Using the wellness center concept as now developed in Osakis (pop 1900) as a model, Phase III and its nine-member board foresee such a wellness center as a huge asset to Melrose and the surrounding communities – attracting business and retirees to a community which is focused on the future. While a Wellness Center is Phase III’s ultimate goal, providing physical, intellectual, wellness and social activities is already taking place. Over the last seven years, over 30 classes have been offered in the Senior Activity room on the lower level of the City Center. Others have been offered at the high school as part of Community Education. Senior Strength Classes meet at the City Center as does the Phase III 30-member Forever Young Singers for their weekly practices. The annual June meeting and picnic provide members with a great social occasion as does the fall social, women’s luncheons, and the Annual Phase III Garden Tour. Wine tasting at Spiritz Liquor and Whispering Oaks Winery are some of our other varied activities and the Men’s and Women’s Phase III book clubs include over 25 avid readers who meet monthly. Staying physically, intellectually and socially active is the key to good health for older adults. A wellness center in Melrose built on the Osakis model would help ignite an increase in the types of activities which keep people engaged and healthy. Contact any of the following board members for more information. Bill Meyer, Joe Timmins, Don Andersen, Jim Mohs, Carol Ricklick, David Tomsche, Bruce Kociemba, Loren Meyer or Carole Austing.

The Sauk River Players presented “Into the Woods” during the summer of 2013. It combines the well-known fairy tales of “Cinderella,” “Rapunzel,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and “Little Red Ridinghood” with the story of “The Baker and his Wife” who desperately want a child.

The Sauk River Players have, for over 30 years, presented musicals in the summer. The group began as summer entertainment and a showcase for adult and student talent in the Sauk Centre, Melrose and Albany areas. It was started by Cal Meyer, Marit Elliott, Jackie O’Brien, and Red Howard as a musical group that would present family-friendly shows. Early in the 80s, the show traveled between Melrose and Sauk Centre theatres. Over the years, they have produced traditional shows such as Annie, Oliver, Sound of Music, South Pacific, Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, etc. The group has even produced a unique musical about a man-eating plant, Little Shop of Horrors, and was one of the first amateur groups to produce Into the Woods after its debut on Broadway in 1988. The cast is typically made up of anywhere from 30-70 singers/actors of all ages, depending on the show. Wizard of Oz was one of their largest with 72 performers. Rehearsals run about six weeks in the evenings during June and July. Production week is the third week in July at the Melrose High School Auditorium. Cost of tickets is low and usually shows are meant for all audiences. Ticket and audition information is available by calling Audrey Hiltner at 256-5160, ext. 1001. Director is Marit Elliott.

TOWN & COUNTRY PLAYERS
For over four decades, the Town and Country Players have presented plays in Melrose. They were started by Cal Meyer, Barb Meyer, Jesse Lovelace and Mark Sieve in 1969 as a vehicle for comedies produced by and for adults once a year. More recently, this group has included some high school students and many adults and produced small-cast musicals such as 9 to 5, Bingo-The Winning Musical, Quilters, Cotton Patch Gospel, The Fantasticks, The Tammy Wynette Show, Cash: Ring of Fire and Honky Tonk Angels. These shows are generally presented in spring. Rehearsals begin in late January or early February and are performed at the Melrose High School Auditorium.

2013 production of “9 to 5.”

Melrose Area Schools provide an excellent Community Education program. The program includes activities and opportunities for community members of all ages. Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) programs are offered for children birth to kindergarten and their parents. What will you do at ECFE? Parent/Child Interaction - parents and children explore and learn together in the classroom doing projects, puzzles and educational games without the distraction of other siblings, the phone or the laundry! Circle Time - teachers, children and parents participate in songs and games together. Children’s Time - time for the children to play, eat a snack and listen to a story with their friends and an early childhood teacher. Parent Discussion - parents share practical advice and discuss parenting topics of interest with each other and a parent educator in an adjoining room with a oneway mirror to observe the children as they play. School Readiness is also offered, which is a preschool program for children who are four by September 1. Children meet twice a week in a preschool room and engage in activities that will prepare them for kindergarten. We also offer a 3-year-old preschool. The Adult Basic Education programs include Citizenship class, English as a Second Language, and General Education Diploma classes. These classes are offered in the afternoon and evening at no charge. The hospital has the latest medical and diagnostic equipment to ensure quality medical care at the local level. The transaction satisfied the lease and ended all association between the City of Melrose and CentraCare Health. CENTRACARE HEALTH - MELROSE CLINIC
525 Main St. W, Melrose, MN 56352 (320) 256-4228 Clinic Years in Business: 42 (since 1972) Brief History: The Melrose community was served faithfully for many decades by two independent physicians – Dr. A.H. Zachman and Dr. L.B. Kuhlmann. As they approached the latter part of their careers, the Melrose citizens became concerned about who would follow in their footsteps. They formed a committee to recruit new doctors and had a flier posted in the University of Minnesota Medical School student lounge. This flier was noticed by then medical students Allen Horn and James Mohs. Later a friend, Tim Scanlan also became interested. The three students were aggressively recruited by the people of Melrose. After they finished their training, they came to Melrose and in 1972 built a clinic. As the community grew, so did the number of physicians. The clinic was an independent entity serving the health care needs of the Melrose area until May 1996 when it integrated with CentraCare Health in St. Cloud in order to expand patient services, specialty coverage and information systems. This integration has allowed the physicians of CentraCare Health – Melrose to continue their emphasis on cost-effective, quality health care in a rapidly changing health care marketplace. Another significant result of the integration was the construction of a clinic in 1999. The 1999 clinic provided

much needed room for additional physicians and allowed for combining the clinic and hospital lab and X-ray services. The staff of CentraCare Health - Melrose promotes the optimal health of patients and the community by involving individuals as much as possible in their own health care. An emphasis on patient-centered care, education and preventative health care, as well as new technologies and skills, will ensure that the providers and staff of CentraCare Health - Melrose will meet the health care needs of the entire area well into the future. One of the original founders of the clinic, Allen Horn, M.D., reluctantly gave up seeing patients in January 2005 due to increasing responsibilities as President of CentraCare Clinic. In 2012, he retired after serving 10 years as CentraCare Clinic president and more than 30 years as a family medicine physician in Melrose. James Mohs, M.D., who initially only planned to stay for two years, retired from the practice in December 2006 after working in Melrose for more than 33 years. Mary Schwieters, M.D., who resigned from the clinic in 2008 to be able to spend more time with her children, also works as a locum to help out in the clinic when needed. The current physicians include Drs. Dante Beretta, Kurt Schwieters, Julie Klasen, Patrick Heller, and nurse practitioners Erin Bjork, Beth Frazier and Sheila Wing. For 42 years, the clinic has offered comprehensive family health care to an ever expanding service area in central Minnesota. In December 2009, the clinic moved to a new, larger clinic site, adjacent the old clinic. A new laboratory and retail pharmacy also opened in this addition. The former clinic space was renovated and is being used for visiting specialist clinics. CentraCare Health - Melrose clinic is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The telephone numbers are 256-4228, 3525297 and 837-5200.
