Independence day celebrationbring your friends for a great

“Touch the Sky”
Oh, for summer days, laying on the grass
watching the clouds. We let time slip away as
the forms unfold before us, as the sun warms
our face, and the gypsy breeze plays with our
hair. When was the last time we have allowed
ourselves this great pleasure? When was the
last time we have just allowed ourselves to Be,
without being driven to Do? If there is a time for
the re-creation of our souls, it is this: when we
can allow our imaginations to meander in the
clouds and feel our spirit dance on the wind.
John Magee wrote a wonderful poem that
gives some sense of the blessing of such a
summer day- a day given over to the touch of
the sun and the breeze, and the great gift of
being alive. Dear friends, may we know such
days as we embrace the summer before us.

On her way there, her train took her through the World's
Columbian Exposition in Chicago, with its alabaster
buildings proclaiming the promise of a bright future.
Then it took her through the Kansas wheat fields of
America's heartland,
and brought her up to the majestic view of the Great
Plains from high atop Pike’s Peak in Colorado. She saw it
all, one nation, one land, one people. And on the
pinnacle of Pike’s Peak, she wrote the poem we sing
today, America the Beautiful.
When Richard Nixon visited the People's Republic of
China in 1972, this song was played by the Chinese as the
welcome music. The Chinese characters for United States
literally mean "Beautiful Country." And it is, in fact, just
that. The Beautiful Country.

HUNGER KNOWS NO SEASON...

Sharon Perez, who faithfully takes our
food pantry donations in each month
is reporting that the donation
receptacle has been very light in
recent months. Emmanuel designates
the first Sunday of each month as
Food Pantry Sunday. Please remember to bring some
non-perishable food items and place them in the
receptacle located in the foyer. Our donations go to the
Kettle Moraine Food Pantry which is located just south of
Wales. Thank you.

WEDDING JOYS!

America the Beautiful, which will be
the centerpiece for our July 5
Independence Day hymnsing, was
written by Katharine Lee Bates. Bates was an English
professor at Wellesley College just outside of Boston. In
1895, at the age of thirty-three, she took a train trip to
Colorado, to teach a summer course at Colorado
College.

Adult Fellowship News....
We mourn the passing of our dear member, Nancy Allen.
She enjoyed attending our meetings and events and we
thoroughly enjoyed having her as part of the group.
Regular monthly meetings will resume in fellowship hall on
September 8 at 1:00 PM. Until then.....it appears we’ll be
spending the summer eating.....
JUNE 9
We’re going to Ron’s Cozy Corner for lunch. Meet at
church at 11 AM- reservation for lunch at 1l:30 AM.
JULY 14
Lunch at Maxim’s in Oconomowoc. Meet at church at 11
AM- reservation for lunch at 11:30 AM.

Potluck picnic, 12:00 noon in fellowship hall. Bring a dish
to share and a white elephant prize for bingo. (Planning

Nancy Allen

passed away on
April 27th following a courageous
battle with cancer. She joined
Emmanuel
along
with
her
daughter, Gail Tamez just two
years ago....our time with her was
too short... We miss her warm smile and her jovial
disposition. Nancy was member of our Adult Fellowship
ladies group and regularly attended worship until the
cancer took her health.
A service in celebration of her life was held at Emmanuel
on May 3rd. Along with her daughter, Gail and Gail’s
family, son-in-law Sal and grandsons Andrew and Robert,
Nancy is survived by three daughters and one son and
their families, three brothers and a sister. She was
preceded in death by her husband Morris, her daughter
Patricia, her granddaughter Grace and her parents, Paul
and Harriette Yearwood.

Nancy was a lifelong nurse, having graduated from
Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1960. Activities
she enjoyed included scrapbooking, writing poems,
gardening and collecting dolls. She
loved life and loved her family.
She was lovingly cared for by her
family with the aid of Aurora at
Home Hospice in her final weeks.

This is always a good message,
but I thought it particularly
appropriate with our rummage
sale in the near future!
Jesus, looking at him, loved him
and said, “You lack one thing;
go, sell what you own, and give
the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; then come, follow me.” Mark 10:21
Jesus' challenge to the rich ruler to give up all possessions
is quite unsettling, as many of us would be the first to
admit that we, indeed, have more than we actually
'need'. We may not be Warren Buffett rich, or Oprah
Winfrey rich, but rich enough, most of us with a house,
job, education, transportation and food.
Doris Powell, author of Stewards in the Household of God,
says, “Years ago when this was the Bible passage read in
church, I worried about what our minister might say. After
pointing out that Jesus would not be likely to ask the
same thing of everyone, he went on to suggest an
approach to faithfully deal with possessions. Step 1: Go
through your possessions, identify your excess, and give it
away. “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone
who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”
-Luke 3:11 Step 2: Learn to distinguish “needs” from
“wants” lest you reacquire an excess. Step 3: For those
possessions you've kept, find ways to share them.”

Sale is Coming on Saturday, August 29th!
Until then, there is lots to do….

Donate!










Prior to Sunday, August 9th: Place your items in the
garage. If you have items that are delicate or fabric,
please place them under the rectangular tables
against the wall on the Parking lot side in Fellowship
Hall for Kristen to deal with.
On or After Sunday, August 9th: Smaller items can be
brought to the last two rooms on the left hand side in
the Sunday School wing. Larger items can be put in
the garage.
Baked goods or other homemade items can be
delivered starting Sunday, August 23rd up through
the day of the sale. Use your best judgment on how
long they can sit. Please, no items that need
refrigeration and pre-package all items in a sellable
wrapping or container.
We can only accept flat-screened monitors or
televisions for donation. This is because Goodwill and
other agencies have stopped accepting tube style
screens and TV’s.
Please no adult clothing other than coats, shoes,
purses or hats.

Sort!


This can be done by anyone at anytime. Just go to
the Sunday School rooms anytime after August 9th
and place any unsorted items by the sign for their
categories. If a category for the item has not been
created yet, grab a piece of paper for a sign and
start one.

Price and Display!


Starting on Sunday, August 23rd through Friday,
August 28th masses of wonderful things will need to
be brought from the donation rooms and garage to
fellowship hall. They will then be organized, displayed,
and priced for sale.

Sell, sell, sell!



On Saturday the 29th we will need some early risers to
come at 6am and set up.
Shifts beginning at 8am until 4pm will need to be
staffed to sell the items.

Clean-up!


On Monday, August 31st any items remaining after our
blowout “name your price” free-for-all on Sunday the
30th after church, will need to be packed up for the
Charity truck.

valuable or precious items that you would want a reserve
price to be met before selling or that need special care,

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
Family Promise of Western Waukesha County

Our third round of hosting Family Promise is finished. Thank
you to everyone who participated. I'm sure you will agree
that in addition to helping others, we have a great
opportunity to get to know our fellow church members
better. Here is an update on some of the families we
have hosted.

Mark your calendars....the Emmanuel Praise Band, Float &
Kids will be in this year’s parade!
Parents: keep that date open so your kids can
participate!
Everyone else: as the time draws closer, we’ll be asking
for donations of wrapped candy for the kids to hand
out...and come to the parade to support all involved

Guest Preachers in June and July...
Pastor Nansi will be away on vacation and attending the
UCC General Synod in Cleveland...in her absence, this
will be the schedule of Guest Preachers. THANK YOU ALL
for volunteering!

MISSION & OUTREACH
Singing Bowl

Thanks to everyone who generously gave
your loose change to Doctors Without
Borders. It will go far to help their mission. We
raised $511.62.
Just a reminder our Singing Bowl collections continue for
Dryhootch for the months of June, July, & August.
Dryhootch provides veterans and their families with a
stable, substance-free environment, offering programs to
gather, grow and enhance their post-service lives. Please
give generously to our veterans who have given so much
to us! Thank You.
Social Concerns will be collecting books for Prader-Willi
Homes of Oconomowoc clients. They need books from
preschool thru high school. Board books, picture books,
children’s cook books, books about presidents, nature
books. Just about anything. These children love to read
no matter what level they are. Prader-Willi Syndrome is a

Chy Chy and Kimberly are living in their own apartment in
Waukesha and doing great. Chy Chy loves her
apartment and is working with workforce development
and going to school to get her CNA.
Amanda and baby Jayden are doing well. Jayden is 3
months old -Amanda and baby live in Okauchee.
Amanda is still at McDonalds and Jayden is in a near-by
day care.
Cody, Rachel, and Amiah are a happy family. They love
their new apartment in Sussex. Cody has a full time job,
and Rachel is staying home with the baby. They have
reconnected with Rachel's family and they are an
excellent support system for this young family.
Stephanie and Avery have been a joy to host. Everyone
loves holding that precious baby.
Mitchell attends Silver Lake middle school and Denise
continues to work with FP to find housing for her family.
One of her 13 year old twin girls is scheduled for an MRI at
the end of the month to diagnose a heart problem.
Several other families have graduated through the
program, but they were not hosted at our church. Our
next hosting week is currently scheduled for August 2-9.

Dousman Meals Drivers- Looking for people available
over the lunch hour during the week to deliver hot meals
to home-bound people in our area. The meals are
prepared and picked up at 3 Pillars, delivered to the
client and then their empty trays and your clipboard are
returned to 3 Pillars. If you available from about 11:45 AM
– 1 PM, PLEASE CHECK THIS OUT! Our faithful drivers would
love you to join in this ministry. You need not be available
each day....even one day will be helpful.

PRECIOUS METALS RECYCLING

Keep those bags of cans coming! Place
your aluminum cans and other precious
metals (brass, copper etc.) in bags outside
the garage. THANK YOU!

EMMANUEL SUMMER FUN NIGHT!

Games! Potluck! Good times for all ages! We’re even
going to put the volleyball net up to see who’s middle
name should be Spike! In addition, for those adults who
aren’t into volleyball, Dick Hawkins will be teaching a 45
minute class on New Testament scriptures that aren’t in
our Bible (the Non-Canonical scriptures.) See below for a
description…
THE NON-CANONICAL SCRIPTURES…
These are ancient texts used by the early church that
aren’t found in our Bibles. The earliest years of Christianity
were filled with roiling creativity and passion. Many
people wrote versions of the life of Christ (gospels), texts
trying to understand what Christ’s life, death and
resurrection meant (theology), and encouragement to
other believers. These texts were used during worship
services throughout the Christian world. But in the church
controversies of the first through fourth centuries, there
had to be winners and losers as to who was included in
the final canon (the 27 books that made it into the New
Testament). Over the centuries, the other non-canonical
works fell out of use, and then were forgotten entirely…
until recent archaeological digs. Needless to say, the
theological world was excited when they discovered this
whole new treasure of writings!
Aug. 20 from 7-7:45pm, Dick Hawkins will be giving an
introductory study on these scriptures not found in the
Bible. Come and jump into this whole new world that has
been discovered!

May 31st was Graduate Day at Emmanuel....we offer our congratulations to all...
Drew Powell: After school is over I am going to live it up and have all the fun I can have
before I leave for Fort Jackson in South Carolina for my Basic Training for the Army Reserves.
After that I go to Fort Lee in Virginia for my a.i.t. Training (specific job training). When I return
in February I will be looking for a new car or truck and I'll be looking for a job as a mechanic
since my military training will be a 91Bravo a wheeled vehicle mechanic. I will also be
attending a technical school for more schooling.

Xavier Hazelberg: After high school, I'm planning on attending UW- Madison; at this

Ryan Dockstader: Ryan graduated with his Associates Degree from UW Waukesha, and
starts a 2-year stint at Carroll College in September to get his BA in Early Childhood Education.
He wants to be a teacher- and will be a great one because he loves kids! He loves them so
much that he’s going to be the music teacher for our church school next September, too!
Ryan won an award of Achievement from the Yoga Club for making an outstanding positive
impact on the campus community. He was nominated by the club’s adviser, Dr. Subhangi
Stalder. He also received the Lynn Knight scholarship and the Founders scholarship from
Carroll University. Here is a portion of Dr. Stalder’s comments, read at the graduation ceremony about Ryan: I
cannot think of anyone more deserving of the yoga club achievement award than Ryan. Ryan has been the
vice president of the club but actually most of the time he actually did the president’s and treasure’s jobs as
well. He is very caring, kind and sensitive person. It was with his diligence, creativity and persistence the club
succeeded this last year. Ryan single handedly often did work for all three officers. His work to start the $1
campaign for Nepal Earth quake was very noticeable and allowed the club to reach its goal of $1000. Ryan
also was the recipient of the Lynn Knight Yoga Club scholarship this year. He has assimilated the true essence
and spirit of the yoga club.

Marie Mayer: Marie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a
double major (political science & English) from the College of Letters &
Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Future plans??? Finding a
job!!

Peggy Hazelberg: I graduated with honors of Magna Cum Laude from Carroll
University with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing on May 10, 2015. I have always had a
passion for pregnant mommies and newborns and is very pleased that I got a job at
Waukesha Memorial Hospital as a Labor and Delivery Nurse. I start my job on June 8.
Thank you to the wonderful congregation for always being so supportive of me going
back to school!!!
