Welcome To Melrose

A Word From
The Mayor

Welcome to the City Of Melrose. We are glad to have you here. We are a strong community
in central Minnesota. Our diversity makes us very well represented.

You can camp and explore while here in Melrose, as we have the Sauk River Park and Lake
Wobegon Trail. From Melrose you can bike to Fergus Falls or to St. Joseph, then up north to
Little Falls and back again. When you get done with all of that, you can head to Lake Sylvia or
Big and/or Little Birch Lakes in the summer. Melrose has wonderful restaurants, bars, history
museum, a golf course and bowling alley, to name just a few fun things to do.

Melrose is conveniently located right off I-94, mid-way between St. Cloud and Alexandria.
We are just a little more than an hour from the Twin Cities. We have a wonderful business
community. There are small businesses, corporate offices and large industrial businesses
that call Melrose home. From the Scherer pickling factory, to Jennie-O Turkey Store, we are
known worldwide for the products we sell and make right here in Melrose. Our large industries
include Jennie-O Turkey Store, Proliant Dairy, Melrose Dairy Proteins, Melrose Metalworks,
Stearns Electric and Leedstone, Inc. We have an excellent employee base for anyone. In the last
few years, we have had added new growth in the business sector in town. CentraCare Health
System has everything from a hospital, specialty clinics, assisted living to even a nursing home.
CentraCare is always developing something new to help our community. Melrose is also the
home of Warrior Boats and the Central Minnesota Credit Union. With the addition of the Dollar
General and Carstens Industries, CAP Enterprises and Melrose Metalworks, we have a very
diverse labor force.

We have two churches in town and with our school system, that makes us a one-stop
shop for anyone who wants to be part of it.

We have the room for any business to come to Melrose and we will attempt to give you all
the support you need to be successful.

Melrose is a city with a rich history of diversity, starting with the Irish and Germans and
today we have the addition of the Hispanic population. Diversity is something Melrose, which
is an old railroad community, is known for. I believe that our history proves we are a strong
city. As we continue to change and move forward, we still take time to stop and remember the
past.
With warm regards
Joe Finken

Melrose Commerce
and Industry
Melrose is a community with excellent employment, good
infrastructure and a productive agricultural base. Its location
adjacent to I-94 in Central Minnesota’s lake country provides
quick and easy access to business markets, abundant recreational
opportunities, and a sensibly-paced lifestyle, all within an easy
commute of major metropolitan markets.
Two of the area’s largest manufacturing industries are located
in Melrose. Jennie-O Turkey Store, Inc., one of the world’s largest
turkey processing plants, employs over 800 people and processes
1.3 to 1.5 million live pounds of turkey per day. Most of these
turkeys are grown within a 50- to 60-mile radius of the processing
facility. Jennie-O Turkey Store, Inc. products are distributed to
customers in all 50 states and approximately 40 foreign countries.
Melrose Dairy Proteins, LLC is a milk-processing facility owned
by Land O’ Lakes, Inc. and Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. With its
approximately 130 employees, the company processes nearly 1.3
billion pounds of milk into over 130 million pounds of cheddar
and Italian-style cheeses annually. The company also supplies
dairy permeate to Proliant Dairy Ingredients, Inc., a whey drying
facility located adjacent to Melrose Dairy Proteins, LLC.
CentraCare Health – Melrose is a 25-bed critical access hospital
with an attached clinic, 75-bed skilled nursing home and a 61unit senior independent apartment building with assisted living
services. A full range of health care services and convenient access
to a variety of specialists are provided on this growing medical
campus in Melrose. CentraCare Health – Melrose employs more
than 280 people who serve nearly 10,000 residents in and around
western Stearns County. In 2014, CentraCare Health – Melrose
increased access to senior living and assisted living services
by adding 20 apartment units to Park View Center. The 61-unit
building operates with a Class F Home Care license and offers
assistance to those in need of health services 24 hours a day.
According to the most recent statistics from the State
Demographer in 2013, Melrose had an estimated population of
3,636 with 1,322 housing units. While single-family residential
construction continues at a slower-than-desired rate, industrial
and commercial development has continued at a pace rivaling
or exceeding most central and outstate Minnesota communities.
Melrose businesses – industrial, commercial and retail, and service
providers – are continuing their long and much-appreciated
tradition of investing in the Melrose community by expanding

their businesses or starting new ones, resulting in the creation
of additional job opportunities – which is essential to every
prospering city. Notable projects starting in the latter part of 2014
included Munson Feed Company’s 5,000-square-foot truck and
dry storage facility and Melrose Metalworks’ two – 5,000-squarefoot buildings, one of which will be used for truck storage and
the other for dry storage and eventually production. In addition,
Kraemer Lumber Company is constructing a 10,000-square-foot
addition to house a new hardware store and an expansion of the
company’s office space. Recently, CentraCare Health – Melrose
completed a 20-unit addition to its onsite senior independent
living facilities and Proliant Dairy Ingredients added 35,000
square feet of warehouse space.
Melrose Public Utilities supplies electrical power for the City,
while Stearns Electric Association supplies it for the surrounding
communities. Arvig provides telephone, television, high-speed
Internet services, voice and data networking and computer
services to the area. There are nine restaurants/fast food outlets,
three banking facilities, three supermarkets/grocers and many
other stores and services. The city has five parks, a golf course, a
branch of the Great River Regional Library system and a weekly
newspaper, The Melrose Beacon.
Melrose’s most important asset is its people. Through their
dedication, work ethic and values, they drive the community’s
development and prosperity.

The Sauk River Players presented “Into the Woods” during the summer of 2013. It combines the
well-known fairy tales of “Cinderella,” “Rapunzel,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and “Little Red
Riding Hood” with the story of “The Baker and his Wife” who desperately want a child.

SAUK RIVER PLAYERS

The Sauk River Players have, for over 30 years, presented musicals in the summer.

The group began as summer entertainment and a showcase for adult and student talent in the
Sauk Centre, Melrose and Albany areas. It was started by Cal Meyer, Marit Elliott, Jackie O’Brien, and
Red Howard as a musical group that would present family-friendly shows. Early in the 80s, the show
traveled between Melrose and Sauk Centre theatres. Over the years, they have produced traditional
shows such as Annie, Oliver, Sound of Music, South Pacific, Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, etc.
The group has even produced a unique musical about a man-eating plant, Little Shop of Horrors, and
was one of the first amateur groups to produce Into the Woods after its debut on Broadway in 1988.

The cast is typically made up of anywhere from 30-70 singers/actors of all ages, depending on
the show. Wizard of Oz was one of their largest with 72 performers. Auditions are usually the week of
Memorial Day.

Rehearsals run about six weeks in the evenings during June and July. Production week is the third
week in July at the Melrose High School Auditorium. Cost of tickets is low and usually shows are meant
for all audiences.

Ticket and audition information is available by calling Audrey Hiltner at 256-5160, ext. 1001.
Director is Marit Elliott.

TOWN & COUNTRY PLAYERS

For over four decades, the Town and
Country Players have presented plays in
Melrose. They were started by Cal Meyer,
Barb Meyer, Jesse Lovelace and Mark Sieve
in 1969 as a vehicle for comedies produced
by and for adults once a year.

More recently, this group has included
some high school students and many adults
and produced small-cast musicals such as
9 to 5, Bingo-The Winning Musical, Quilters,
Cotton Patch Gospel, The Fantasticks, The
Tammy Wynette Show, Cash: Ring of Fire and
Honky Tonk Angels.

These shows are generally presented
in spring. Rehearsals begin in late January
or early February and are performed at the
2014 production of “How to Talk Minnesotan”
Melrose High School Auditorium.

Ticket and audition information is available by calling Audrey Hiltner
at 256-5160, ext. 1001. Director is Marit Elliott.

Phase III Activities
Club
Phase III is an organization, which over the last eight
years, has provided physical, intellectual, social and wellness
activities for the Melrose area’s older adults. The ultimate
goal of Phase III is to see, built in Melrose, a state-of-theart wellness center as an adjunct to our excellent existing
health care delivery system. With over 440 dues-paying
members from the outset, Phase III has used members’ dues
to leverage a matching grant from the Initiative Foundation
for drafting preliminary concept plans. Using the wellness
center concept as now developed in Osakis (pop 1900)
as a model, Phase III and its nine-member board foresee
such a wellness center as a huge asset to Melrose and the
surrounding communities – attracting business and retirees
to a community which is focused on the future.
While a wellness center is Phase III’s ultimate goal,
providing physical, intellectual, wellness and social activities
is already taking place. Over the last eight years, over 35
classes have been offered in the Senior Activity room on
the lower level of the City Center. Others have been offered
at the high school as part of Community Education. Senior
Strength Classes meet three times a week at the City Center,
as do the Phase III 30-member Forever Young Singers for
their weekly practices. The annual June meeting and picnic
provide members with a great social occasion, as do the
fall social, women’s luncheons and the Annual Phase III
Garden Tour. Wine tasting at Spiritz Liquor and Whispering
Oaks Winery are some of our other varied activities and the
men’s and women’s Phase III book clubs include over 25
avid readers who meet monthly. We are looking forward to
hosting a mystery dinner this spring in addition to possible
tours.
Staying physically, intellectually and socially active is the
key to good health for older adults. A wellness center would
help ignite an increase in the types of activities which keep
people engaged and healthy. Contact any of the following
board members for more information. Bill Meyer, Joe
Timmins, Don Andersen, Jim Mohs, Carol Ricklick, David
Tomsche, Bruce Kociemba, Loren Meyer or Carole Austing.

History of Melrose

The first permanent European settlers, including
the Adleys and Wheelers, arrived in the Melrose area
in 1857, gradually displacing the native Ojibwae and
Dakota. The new town was originally called the Maineite Settlement, but probably the Adleys renamed it for
their ancestral home, Melrose, Scotland.

When the headquarters were transferred back to Waite
Park 29 years later, it was a blow from which the town
almost did not recover.

Melrose has seen continuous progress ever since.
Two granite companies, a brewery, a newspaper, several
major manufacturing plants, many stores and services,
churches, financial institutions, health facilities and a
strong agricultural base helped it grow and flourish over
the years. Today it has both a proud heritage and a vital
future, as it has become a regional leader in medicine,
manufacturing and communications.

Sauk River Bridge, Melrose, Minn.

Eventually Melrose had a hotel, stage coach
station, post office, school and a few homes. But it didn’t
begin to thrive until 1867, when cousins Edwin and
William Clark arrived and bought the Adley property.
The Clarks built (or possibly rebuilt) a dam and mill
and began selling flour and grist. They built a block of
brick buildings, opened stores, a bank and sawmill and
brought the railroad to town. By the time Edwin, known
as “the father of Melrose,” left in 1893, Melrose was a
bustling community with churches, railroad depot and
assorted stores and businesses.
Settlers from New England were soon joined
by Germans and Irish who were seeking better lives
for their families, religious freedom, free land, new
adventures, or escape from military service. Many Irish
worked on the railroad, especially after 1894, when
Melrose became a division point of the Great Northern.

Lake Wobegon Trail

The Lake Wobegon Trail measures 54 miles in Stearns
County. The Stearns County segment of the Lake Wobegon
Trail extends from the Stearns/Todd County line to St.
Joseph and from Albany to the Morrison/Stearns County
line. There is an additional eight miles of Lake Wobegon
Trail in Todd County.

If you connect the Lake Wobegon Trail with Morrison
County’s connecting Soo Line Trail and the Central Lakes
Trail, which meets the Lake Wobegon Trail in Osakis, you
have the LONGEST PAVED RAIL TRAIL in the country – over
120 miles long.

The trail is open to bicycling, snowmobiling without

Agriculture Industry
The agriculture industry continues to be an integral part of
Melrose’s success. Dairy and turkey, along with pork, beef and crops
are the dominant agricultural industries in our area.

The dairy industry continues to have traditional 60- to 90-cow
farms with pipeline milkers, while most expansions now include
a milking parlor, free stall cow housing, and dairy herds of 150 to
1000 cows. According to the 2010 Minnesota Agricultural Statistics,
Stearns County had 67,000 dairy cows on 746 dairy farms with an
average of 92 cows per farm. The average cow produced 19,600
pounds of milk annually compared to 10,000 pounds of milk
produced annually in 1975. A few reasons for the increase are better
feeding practices, improved genetics and also more attention shown
to cow comfort. Stearns County is the #1 county in Minnesota for
milk production, total milk cows and total cash receipts for livestock
sales, along with cattle and calves on inventory.

There are a number of turkey farms in the area as well. A majority
of them have contracts with Jennie-O Turkey Store to raise a certain
number of birds. A majority of the turkeys that are contracted with
Jennie-O Turkey Store are processed at the plant here in Melrose.
There are also pork and beef producers in the area, however
much of the hog finishing has gone to contract finishing, so not as
many small farmers in the area have been choosing to raise pork.
Cash crops are also raised in the Melrose area. These crops
include corn, soybeans and alfalfa. Some of these crops will be sold

to the feed mills in town or hauled to another site. The majority of
the alfalfa that is raised as cash crops is sold locally to dairy farmers
or brought to a hay auction. Stearns County is the #1 county in
Minnesota for hay production and oat production. The Melrose
economy continues to be vibrant and is highly dependent on the
agriculture industry.

educational games without the distraction of other siblings, the
phone or the laundry!

Circle Time - teachers, children and parents participate in
songs and games together.

Children’s Time - time for the children to play, eat a snack and

Our Mission Statement:
“St. John’s – St. Andrew’s
Catholic
School
is
dedicated to providing a
Christ-centered environment which will foster the
growth and development
of each child.”
Our Philosophy:

“We maintain that
St. John’s – St. Andrew’s
Catholic School is a place
of spiritual and academic
growth for students,
staff, parents, and parish
community.

We strive to educate
students by fostering Oktoberfest celebration.
Christian values, promoting a feeling of security and self-worth, and meeting individual needs
through a comprehensive program.

We provide a variety of opportunities to learn basic academic
skills, while helping each student accept responsibility for his/her own
learning.

We emphasize respect for oneself; respect for other people, and
for all forms of life and the environment that sustains them.

We nurture a community of lifelong and compassionate learners
through Catholic values and following Jesus’ example through prayer,
service, and love.

• Accredited through the Minnesota Nonpublic School
Accrediting Association.
• All students participate actively in the Sacraments of the
Church and are involved in some of the liturgies, prayer
services, and social outreach. Religious and moral virtues
are rooted in the Scriptures and become a “way of life” at
St. John’s – St. Andrew’s School.
• Highly-trained teachers who care about each individual
student; their mental, spiritual, and academic excellence.
• Small class sizes allow
for more individual
attention for each child.
Grades K-2 in Greenwald,
Gr. 3-6 in Meire Grove.
• Religion, reading, and
math are very important
in our curriculum. With these basics, the rest of the
subjects will be easier to master at each level.
• Technology (computer and i-Pad) is taught to all students
and incorporated into their regular curriculum.

To illuminate the teachings of Jesus…using our hearts, hands and voices as Christian witnesses while striving
for academic excellence.

St. Mary’s Catholic School believes in developing the whole child—providing an interactive and
individualized education in a safe, welcoming environment. Parents, teachers, students, and school leaders
work together to help children reach their full life potentials—striving for academic excellence while fostering
self-confidence, a life-long love of learning, and respect for others’ differences.
Learning is designed to meet the many different ways in which children learn. Lessons help students prepare
for the challenges of today and tomorrow. Good moral character and spiritual growth are viewed as highly
as academics—giving students the foundation to shape their future rather than being shaped by it.
