Avenue 9 exhibition “Improvisations”
“Improvisations” is the theme of the Avenue 9 Gallery exhibition that opens with a March 23 reception and closes April 22. It features Maria Phillips, paintings, Barbara Morris, paintings, photography and prints, and Delbert Rupp, sculptural ceramics. Most of us can improvise a meal if we must, but it takes a fine chef and a well-stocked larder for the improvisation to truly please dinner guests. Phillips, Morris and Rupp improvise art based upon decades of art making and depth of life experiences. This results in stimulating esthetic effects. Each artist, in earlier years, practiced

a step-by-step acquiring of skills and methodical building of imagery. Now, they seek the unpredictable as they follow their creative urges in new directions. Phillips says: “It is liberating to improvise—as I paint, working large and with full body movements, my ideas continually change. I have to allow myself to ruin something in order to break beyond what is known and

comfortable to me.” Barbara Morris says: “Water streams through my art—I’ve been swimming since I was three. I think I’m part fish.” The fluidity of water makes it a perfect subject for improvisation. Morris, entranced by a book of photographs of deep-sea creatures, studies them as springboard to improvisations. Delbert Rupp, early in his career, did highly disciplined production pottery. Now, he manipulates wheel thrown vessels to create organic forms that develop as he works. He says: “I massage the clay with my hands when it is still soft, beat it as it becomes leather hard, and incise and scrape it when it is totally dry. The process of working the clay speaks to me and I relish surprises.” April 15 at lpm Delbert Rupp will demonstrate wheel throwing for ceramic vessels. Visitors to “Improvisations” are sure to be startled and delighted by this trio’s spontaneous, playful, inventive art.

March is Women’s History Month
She Improved the Lives of Many All Over the World—Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962)
As a child, Eleanor Roosevelt was made to feel that she was an “ugly duckling.” After losing both her parents, she was raised by her stern and proper grandmother, and her loneliness persisted until she was befriended by the headmistress at her boarding school. She “came out” into society, but preferred volunteer work at a settlement house to the social whirl. In 1905 she married her cousin, Franklin Roosevelt, a marriage made more complex by her domineering mother-in-law, Sara. While raising six children, Eleanor Roosevelt gradually found the determination to abandon traditional roles in favor of political and reform work. She joined the League of Women Voters, worked with trade union women, and pressed for women’s causes within the Democratic Party. After Franklin Roosevelt was paralyzed by polio in 1921, her public activities expanded. She became his political representative, especially after he was elected governor of New York State in 1928. After her husband’s landslide election in 1932, she feared the White House might encase her in sterile protocol. But her broad sympathies and great energy created a whole new image of what a First Lady could be. Eleanor Roosevelt held her own press conferences, toured the nation repeatedly, and pressed her opinions through newspaper columns and radio broadcasts. In the dark days of the Depression she made Americans feel that someone cared and would try to help. Even though Franklin Roosevelt did not always follow her advice, she pressed the cause of Black people, youth, the poor, and the unemployed. After her husband’s death in 1945, President Truman named her U.S. Delegate to the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, was largely her work, and the delegates rose in a standing ovation for her. Eleanor Roosevelt continued to be active in politics and in work for international cooperation. At a memorial service, Adlai Stevenson said: “She would rather light candles than curse the darkness, and her glow warmed the world.” ---National Women’s Hall of Fame

Author reading and book signing
The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader Author reading and book signing is sponsored by Sierra Club Yahi Group and will be held at the Chico Creek Nature Center on Friday, March 23 starting at 7 p.m. The new two-volume The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader pulls together nearly 100 stories from contemporary hiker/writers, historical journals, and classic environmental authors. The stories capture the diversity of people and experiences found along the 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, from getting lost or found, encounters with animals, enduring extremes of weather, and provide a taste of the culture and history of the trail. Join us for an evening of celebrating the Pacific Crest Trail on March 23 at Chico Creek Nature Center, 1968 East 8th St.. Anthology editors and lifelong PCT hikers Rees Hughes and Corey Lewis will read stories from the anthology and share a slideshow of trail images. If you are a thru-hiker, a section hiker, a day hiker or an arm chair hiker, join us for this evening of laughter, reflection, and celebration around this premier National Scenic Trail. 100% of author royalties from book sales are donated to the Pacific Crest Trail Association. Hope to see you there! Signed books will be available for purchase. For more information, call (530) 891-4671, [email protected]

Four Easy Ways Drivers Can Save Hundreds In Vehicle Ownership Cost
(NAPSI)—Caring for your car can put you on the road to savings. In fact, a savvy consumer can save hundreds of dollars a year on automotive expenses without buying a new car or changing his or her lifestyle. All it takes is a little time and research, and the good sense to choose better-performing products. Here are some easy ways to save money and have your current car last longer: Spend More to Save More Upgrading to one of today’s modern high-performance motor oils can make a meaningful improvement to your car’s fuel economy and engine life. For instance, independent studies have documented that Royal Purple motor oil improves fuel economy by as much as 5 percent and can significantly reduce engine wear. Using high-performance synthetic motor oil, as opposed to conventional oils, also allows for more miles between oil changes, reducing maintenance costs and the amount of time spent out of service. You’ll pay a little more for premium motor oil, but the savings in fuel and reduced maintenance costs more than make up for the higher price. Find out more at www. royalpurple.com. Shop for the Best Rate One of the easiest ways to reduce the costs associated with your car is to shop around for insurance. Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to do your homework. Get at least three price quotes. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet. Your state’s insurance regulator may also provide price comparisons. can be found by visiting the Insurance Information Institute’s website at www2. iii.org/individuals/autoinsurance/. Properly Inflate The U.S. Department of Energy reports that underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. One study estimates that 50−80 percent of the tires traveling on U.S. roads are underinflated. Surprisingly, car owners could save up to 2 billion gallons of gas each year by properly inflating their tires. Keep it Clean A clogged air filter can increase fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent. Air filters keep impurities from damaging the interior of the engine, so replacing dirty filters will save gas and protect your engine. (NAPS)—Before you try to stop your car again, you may want to start thinking about your brakes. Consider the strength and power it takes to bring a 4,000-pound or heavier vehicle from 60 mph to a quick, safe stop. Many drivers take their brakes for granted until they squeal, grind or, worse, stop working altogether. Before that happens, you can get your brakes checked at a qualified, licensed service center. Driving with worn brakes is dangerous for you, your passengers, fellow motorists and pedestrians. Regular brake inspections also help prevent expensive damage and avert potential safety issues.

service: • Your stopping distance is increasing, causing a longer braking distance • You have to push the brake pedal unusually far to engage the brakes • Your vehicle has a tendency to move right or left when the brakes are applied • The steering wheel shakes in your hands as you come to a stop. (This could mean your rotors are damaged, or “warped,” and need attention.) When your brakes or rotors need replacing, use quality, tested products designed for your vehicle. Most cars today are equipped with disc brakes. When you put your foot on the brake pedal, fluid triggers a piston in a caliper to press the brake pad against a rotor on the wheel. The friction of the pad against the rotor stops the hub and wheel—and, therefore, the vehicle. The friction from braking also generates intense heat and brake dust as the pads begin to wear. When pads get too thin, not only can braking ability be compromised, but the heat can damage the rotors and lead to even costlier repairs. Quality brake pads have a built-in wear indicator that makes a high-pitched noise when the pads are worn. It’s your warning to get your brakes checked as soon as possible. lifetime warranty and made for most vehicles on the road today and a variety of needs and budgets. Extend brake life by: • Getting regular brake maintenance • Not riding your brakes • Not slamming on your brakes • Removing brake dust and mud from your wheels with regular car washes • Making sure brake fluid is at the proper level. It’s a good idea to have your auto repair facility check your brakes every time you change your oil or according to the schedule in your owner’s manual. Used-Car Buyers Need To Check For Recalls
(NAPSI)—Every year, vehicle manufacturers issue millions of recalls to help maintain safety and value. But did you know that one in three recalled cars never get fixed? For various reasons, many car owners fail to act on recall notices-even though manufacturers will fix these vehicles at no cost. While some recalls are issued to correct minor flaws in original equipment, you don’t want to buy a vehicle that has costly hidden problems, either. If you’re shopping used cars, there’s an easy way to help improve your chances of buying one without open recalls. Go to recall.carfax.com to check vehicles for open recalls at no cost. Then, you can feel more confident about the used car you’re buying. You can also get more information about a specific recall at safercar.gov. Knowing about an open recall could help you avoid buying a used car with problems. Plus, fixing recalls helps maintain vehicle value and safety. To learn more, visit recall.carfax.com.

(NAPSI)— “Green driving” may be easier—and more important—to achieve than many people think. It’s important because, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, highway vehicles account for 28 percent (1.5 billion tons) of U.S. CO2 emissions each year. Fortunately, even if getting a “green” or emissions-friendly vehicle isn’t in your budget, you can still reduce your car’s footprint on the planet. Here are some tips to consider: • Stay tuned. Keep your car in shape by following the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance. Fixing a vehicle in need of a tune-up can improve gas mileage up to 4 percent. • Take care of your tires. Make sure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Keeping your tires aligned and balanced can also improve your vehicle’s fuel economy up to 3 percent. Don’t inflate your tires to the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Properly inflated tires are safer and will last longer. • Replace a clogged air filter. If you have an older vehicle with a carbureted engine, replacing a clogged air filter can improve your fuel economy up to 6 percent. Air filters keep impurities from damaging the interior of the engine, so replacing the dirty filter will save gas and protect your engine. • Upgrade your motor oil. Try highperformance synthetic oil. Premium automotive products such as Royal Purple synthetic oils are formulated with unique advanced additive technology that can improve the performance of the vehicle and allow for longer intervals between changes. With fewer oil changes, not only are you keeping the water and ground clean by reducing waste of used oil, you’re saving money by spending less time in the shop. Royal Purple motor oil has been reported to reduce fuel consumption by as much as 5 percent compared to ordinary petroleumbased or synthetic lubricants. It’s also been shown to produce notable horsepower and torque increases, so you can switch to an environmentally friendly product without sacrificing performance. • Recycle. Ask your oil change installer about recycling used oil. If you do your own oil changes, find a place that will accept your used motor oil. Royal Purple has partnered with Earth911 to provide recycling centers that take items such as used motor oil bottles, motor oil and oil filters. Learn more at www.fueleconomy. gov and www.royalpurple.com. To find a nearby recycling location, visit www. earth911.com.

“Sustaining Cultures”
CSU, Chico Janet Turner Print Museum Marks 100th Anniversary of Ishi Discovery with “Sustaining Cultures: Native Peoples” Print Exhibition, March 26-April 15 On August 28, 1911 a disheveled and starving man became an icon and symbol of the purported disappearance of Native American tribes and culture when he stumbled out of the nearby wilderness and into the 20th century. Found hiding in an Oroville rancher’s barn, this middle-aged man would come to be known simply as “Ishi.” Not knowing what to do with him, and unable to understand his language, the local citizenry took him to the Butte County Jail for safe-keeping. Soon word got out about Ishi and people flocked from miles around to get a look at “the last wild Indian in North America” and “a living Stone-Age man,” as the newspapers had described him. Anthropology professors at U.C. Berkeley heard about Ishi and after sending a linguistic expert to communicate with him discovered he was the last of his tribe, the Yahi. He was brought to their facility and given an apartment and job in exchange for teaching them about Yahi/Native American culture. The Turner Print Museum is marking the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Ishi with an art exhibition entitled Sustaining Cultures: Native Peoples. Presented March 26-April 15 in the Turner’s gallery space in CSU, Chico’s Meriam Library, the exhibit will feature contemporary prints by Native American, Inuit and Australian Aboriginal artists. Works in the exhibition were selected from the Turner’s 3,500-plus print collection. Four Inuit prints from Stephen and Barbara Morris, sponsors of the exhibition, will be displayed in the Turner lobby. Also on display will be a selection of ceramic works by Southwestern Native American artists on loan from Chico residents Pat and Jerril Kopp. “The prints represent Inuit, Pacific Northwest Coast and Australian Aboriginal artists,” said exhibit co-curator and Museum curator Catherine Sullivan.

“Our intention with the exhibition was to focus on the interrelated themes of cultural survival and the human interaction with the environment, exemplified by works in a variety of styles,” added exhibition co-curator Dr. Matthew Looper, faculty member in CSU, Chico’s Department of Art and Art History. Looper will give a short talk prior to a reception for the exhibition on Thursday, April 12. Festivities began at 5 p.m. at The Turner and are free and open to the public. Print styles represented in the exhibition include serigraph, lithograph, stone-cut, stencil, and relief. “Many of the styles are firmly rooted in distinctly Native traditions of representation, though some are influenced by international art styles such as Expressionism and Impressionism,” noted Looper. Looper said subjects represented in the print works fall into three distinct categories: Humans as a part of the natural world, expressed through animal symbolism; reverence for the earth and sacred sites; and survival of cultural values reflected in traditions and regalia. “Most prints represent the indigenous expression of culture, be that belief, myth or legend,” added Sullivan. “Often certain forms, such as a bear or raven have particular significance. The most compelling aspect is the storytelling within one image. Sometimes parts of one image may actually indicate past and present times overlapping, colliding or existing simultaneously.” Looper hopes that people who come to Sustaining Cultures take from the exhibition a realization that Native American art encompasses a wide range of styles. “Native American art is not something from the past, but is an enduring, vital practice that has relevance for the world today,” he said. “This exhibition represents a rare opportunity to view a wide range of Native American art in a variety of styles. Some works are small and subtle, while others are large and employ bold and unconventional color combinations.” Sullivan said it is the goal of all the exhibitions at The Turner to help foster learning through understanding and relating to the visual image. “For this particular exhibition the depth, breath and reverence for cultural traditions should be apparent and hopefully appreciated by the museum visitor.” A select number of prints from the Turner Collection that expand on the Sustaining Cultures theme will also be displayed in the Ayres Hall first floor cases on the CSU, Chico campus. These prints by Tony Rubey are a photo-lithographic story of Alaskan Eskimos donated by Professor of art James Kuiper and artist Elizabeth Newman Kuiper. The Janet Turner Print Museum is located in the Meriam Library at CSU, Chico, adjacent to the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology, and is open during exhibits Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call Turner Print Museum curator Catherine Sullivan at 898-4476 or visit www.janetturner.org. Groups and classes can go online to make arrangements for visits to The Turner, including visits outside the public viewing hours. The website has a section for class applications for docent tours and related activities. This form should be submitted prior to the visit to ensure a productive and educational experience for the class. Please note that the Normal Avenue Parking Lot, located across from CSU, Chico’s Performing Arts Center, is closed while construction commences on a new parking structure; parking is available near the Meriam Library on nearby Chico streets and also at adjacent Chico State parking lots.

Louis here...
Finally all the house guests have gone for awhile. I need the rest! It’s time to regroup. But how can I? Paulette wants to walk at least 2 times a week! Sometimes 3! But I am wise to her now. If she comes over, I run outside, ‘cause they can’t catch me out there. But now she calls in the morning, and mom grabs me and puts on my harness and leash and waits for her to come over. Rats! They fooled me. But, only once will they do that to me. The next time the phone rings, I am gonna watch my Mom, and if she comes near me, I’ll know what she wants, and I’m gonna run outside. Ha! Now I am wise to them. Well the phone rang once this morning, and it was a short call. I watched my mom, and guess what, she tried to catch me. I fooled her; I hid under the bed. Right in the middle so she couldn’t get to me! Now Paulette came over, and of course she rang the door bell, so I went running out thinking we had company (I love company), and mom nabbed me from behind. Wow, I got caught again! Drat, another long walk! That woman doesn’t give up! I need to do something else. And not walk! This week Mom took me to a dog park! But it was small. Of course the big dog side was huge! I guess they don’t think us little dogs need as much space, but I love to run, and it’s hard in a small space. But I met a lot of new friends. A couple of days later, Mom took me to a different dog park. Much bigger for us little guys. I think we are on a tour of dog parks. (I remember the one we went to in Oregon, it was big!) And the third dog park here was the best. It has grass, and a big hill to run up and down. There were a couple of pugs, many “Heinz 57’s” and even a French Bulldog like me. He looked a lot like my brother Max. His name is Kobe. Fun to play with. I enjoy running around at these places; they have new smells and lots of little guys like me. Now and then a Dummy will bring his big dog into the little guys’ space. People don’t like this. Some guy took an English Bulldog about 60 pounds worth into our space. The little dog section is for up to 25 pounds. Me, I am 25-1/2. I just make it, ‘cause no one can guess the 1/2 pound! He was really nice, but the parents of the little guys were upset ‘cause he is so big! I thought he was nice; he ran around a little bit with me, then they left. The next day when we went there was another one just like me, but much bigger! His name is Hugo. He is not nice! When another little dog tried to get a ball to play with, he started a fight! Wow, he can give us French Bulldogs a bad name. I don’t think I like him at all! Life is good here—yesterday I had a pedicure and a bath! The sun is shining, and it is warm. I really like it here, life is very good. Can’t wait for next month to get here. A lot of friends are coming: Darwin, Dave and Pat, Meaghan and Marcel, and Denise and Colette. It’s tennis tournament time again! I haven’t seen Denise since the summer before last! She is our neighbor in the mountains! Will be good to see old friends again.
