NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • Go Green Tip: If you need to replace holiday lights this year, check out LED lighting. It’s longer-lasting -- up to 10 times longer than CFLs. It’s more energy efficient -- 95 percent more efficient than incandescent lights. And lastly, it’s durable; there’s no filament to break. • Use a clothespin to clip coupons to your shopping cart. This will save you time at the checkout counter, since they’ll be front and center for use. • “Before piping frosting on cookies or cupcakes with a design, I first trace the design using a toothpick. Then, I know for sure the words or image will fit properly. Also, my kids can be the ‘tracers’ and finish up with the piping, saving me time and allowing them to participate.” -- L.C. in Nebraska • “Keep a few address labels with you wherever you go. You’d be surprised how handy they are for filling out forms and such. I just stick a label on and I’m on my way.” -- T.T. in Minnesota

*On Oct. 3, 2008, FDIC deposit insurance temporarily increased from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor through Dec. 31, 2009.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Dec. 1, 1913, the Ford Motor Company introduces the continuous moving assembly line. Ford’s new assembly line could produce a complete car every two-and-a-half minutes, allowing the company to sell cars for less than any competitor. • On Dec. 3, 1947, Marlon Brando’s famous cry of “STELLA!” first booms across a Broadway stage, electrifying the audience during the first-ever performance of Tennessee Williams’ play “A Streetcar Named Desire.” When the curtain went down on opening night, the crowd erupted into a round of applause that lasted 30 minutes. • On Nov. 30, 1954, the first known modern instance of a meteorite striking a human being occurs at Sylacauga, Ala., when a meteorite weighing 8.5 pounds crashes through the roof of a house and into a living room, bounces off a radio and strikes a woman on the hip. Serving Our Local Communities for Over 28 Years. AMERICAN RED CROSS Give Thanks, Give Hope, Give Blood This Thanksgiving Blood Donors Sought to Increase Community Blood Supply The American Red Cross Blood Services, Northeast Division is encouraging all current eligible and new blood donors to give blood this Thanksgiving week and throughout the holiday season to help maintain the community blood supply. Donating blood is a simple act that helps save lives. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood, and blood donors can give someone hope this holiday season by donating blood. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer blood donor. Blood is needed throughout the holiday season and during the cold winter months. Due to hectic holiday schedules, busy travel plans and inclement weather in the Northeast, blood donations can decline during this time. “By adding blood donation to Thanksgiving traditions, families can help avert a blood shortage and begin their gift giving season early,” stated Kay Schwartz, chief executive officer, American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region. “For those in good health, taking just one hour out of a busy holiday schedule to give blood is an active way of showing thanks. And, that one hour can give hope to patients who are less fortunate this Thanksgiving.” For more information about donating blood or to make an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) or visit donatebloodnow.org Individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Identification is required at the time of donation. Note: Local hospitals’ blood is supplied by Community Blood Bank. fb

A: When potatoes cook, the starch granules inside them swell. Vigorous motion after cooking -- such as the rapid spinning of a food processor blade -- ruptures the delicate granules, resulting in a gummy mess. The best way to make mashed potatoes is to simmer the potatoes (never boil) with just enough water to cover until fork-tender, and then mash them by hand with a potato masher, press them through a ricer or beat on low speed with an electric mixer. WRANGLERS 4-H MEETING On November 15th the Wranglers 4-H Club held a 4-H meeting at the Hamlin Memorial Library in Smethport. This meeting was from 5:00 to 7:00pm. At the meeting we did many things. First, we played a game so everyone could get to know everyone’s name. Then, we elected our president, vice president, treasurer, and our secretary. Our president is Rachel Speaker. Our vice president is Hailey. Our treasurer is Caleb Cooper. Our secretary is Samantha Walker. After that we played a game to see who knew their horse breeds and who didn’t. For this game we went around the room where our leader Kelly Davis put pictures of horses on a piece of wood and wrote on the back of the piece of wood that the picture was on. The number was so we could write the number by the breed we thought it was on the sheet of paper Kelly gave us. On that night everyone noticed many new faces from last year’s group of people. Written by: Alix Hezlep f HOME DELIVERY. A new library service available to anyone who can’t leave home because of illness or injury. Please call the S.W. Smith Memorial Library at 814-642-9210 for more information. At this time, service is limited to Port Allegany Borough and Turtlepoint. tf

THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF SHINGLEHOUSE Bill Murk will be in concert at the First Baptist Church, Sunday, November 29th, 6pm at the First Baptist Church in Shinglehouse, Pa. Bill Murk is one of the premier Christian violinists today. His rare, sensitive display of violin mastery and his fresh approach breaks old stereotypes and inspires a new appreciation for this instrument while bridging the musical gap between the generations. As a featured soloist at churches, conferences, conventions and crusades Bill has ministered in all fifty states and over forty countries! Whether ministering for 50,000 men at Promise Keepers, fiddlin’ at the Grand Ole Opry, leading worship with Don Moen, or accompanying and recording with such artists as Fernando Ortega, Amy Grant, Steve Green, Point of Grace, Larry Dalton, Buddy Greene, 4Him, or The Gaither Vocal Band, Bill’s desire is to draw people into the presence of the Lord. Bill’s life and ministry nearly ended in December of 1999 when he and his daughter were hit head-on by a speeding semi-truck. Their journey toward recovery is one filled with both miracles and hardships. For more information on this concert, please call Rev. Russell Horning at 814-697-6556. First Baptist Church is located at 120 West Academy Street in Shinglehouse, Pa. MAXINE SHEAR DISPLAYS ARTWORK AT CCMH Maxine Shear of Coudersport has a variety of artwork on display at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital’s Irwin Medical Arts Center as part of the hospital’s Community Art Showcase. Shear, who works primarily with pen/ink and water-colors, started painting at age four. A lifelong Coudersport resident, she estimates drawing and painting over 500 buildings in the area; many were done from pictures obtained at the historical society, she said. Shear attended art school for one year but is mostly self taught. Her work has been featured at art shows and auctions, including a display at the John White Gallery and joint shows with her daughter. Anyone wishing to purchase one of her pieces can call Shear at 814-274-8910. The project has featured artists Karen Wolf of Sweden Township, Pat Bosworth of Port Allegany, Alyson Leach, Leslie Kelley, and Suzan Richar of Galeton, Naomi Keller, Heather Chilson, and Lindsey Francis of Coudersport, and Mercedes Schwartz of Smethport, according to chairperson Betty Wei. Artists are featured for about six to eight weeks. “It’s a way for area residents to enjoy the talent and creativity of local artists and the hospital family is thrilled to make this opportunity possible,” she said. For more information on the Community Art Showcase, contact Wei at 814-274-7910. fb

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Dec. 5, 1964, the first Medal of Honor awarded to a U.S. serviceman for action in Vietnam is presented to Capt. During an attack on July 6, 1964, Donlon was wounded 4 times, but kept fighting, refusing medical attention. • On Dec. 2, 1975, Ohio State University running back Archie Griffin becomes the first player in history to win the Heisman Trophy two years in a row. Bill Backlog Leaves Vets in Lurch With the economy being in the shape it’s in, a record number of people have decided to sit it out -- and go back to school. Veterans are a healthy portion of that number. The new G.I. Bill, with its cash benefit, is a good impetus for veterans to enroll. The problem? Getting the money. The Department of Veterans Affairs didn’t expect to be so swamped with education claims. Recently, the delays in getting the funds out were so long that the VA

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was American actress and dancer Charlotte Greenwood who made the following sage observation: “Temperament is temper that is too old to spank.” *** • If you happen to own a Rolls Royce and want to swank it up a little bit, a mink jacket to fit the hood ornament is available for purchase. *** • San Francisco’s iconic cable cars are the only mobile national monument in the United States. *** • You might be surprised to learn that, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest swimming pool in the world isn’t found in one of the large industrialized nations as you might expect, but in the relatively small South American country of Chile. Built by a mega-resort on the ocean, the pool covers 20 acres, is more than 1,000 yards long and holds a whopping 66 million gallons of water. Construction took five years and cost more than $1.5 billion, and the estimated annual maintenance cost is more than $3 million. *** • Those who study such things say that lightning travels at one-third the speed of light.

came up with a way for veterans to get their checks pronto: Appear in person at the closest regional office, and a check would be cut while you wait. I imagine the VA hoped that would take care of the backlog and get things back on the right track. Well, it didn’t. Unfortunately, that payment at the regional office was a one-time deal. If you’ve done it once, you can’t do it again. Now the solution, it says, is to hire an outside contractor. Don’t those two words -outside contractor -- just send a shiver down your spine? It’s said that the outside contractors will weed through the backlog by doing enrollment certification. VA personnel will actually make the claims decisions. At this point, the VA has put out a solicitation for a contractor to handle the work. Bottom line: If you’re stuck in this no-check scenario, don’t give up. Stay in school. Talk to the people in the appropriate department and see if you can make arrangements to pay your tuition later. Maybe you can take out a school loan for expenses and pay it off when the checks come in. Just don’t quit. These education benefits are yours. You’ve earned them.

92 degrees. The number of treatments needed depends upon the severity of the problem. Shortterm hydrotherapy can be completed in as little as three sessions. Long-term hydrotherapy for a chronic illness can go on indefinitely. A veterinarian or therapist trained in canine water rehabilitation should oversee the hydrotherapy exercises. Licensing regulations vary from state to state, so owners must ask their vet for a referral to a therapist and pool facility with the proper credentials. As with choosing any professional, owners should take the time to tour the facility and ensure it suits them and their dog. The best facilities are clean and have up-to-date equipment and qualified staff. There are no degrees in canine hydrotherapy, so experience is a must. Canine hydrotherapy is a breakthrough treatment for dogs suffering from mobility problems, spinal injuries, severe arthritis, hip or elbow dysplasia, and other problems. It has been widely used to help humans with disabilities and arthritis pain, and it is only natural that it is finally being used as a treatment for canines.

We are proud to offer Diamond Naturals to our customers who value natural diets for their pets.

I have been offered $25 for it. -- Susan, Weatherford, Texas A: I found your doll referenced in Toys and Prices, edited by Karen O'Brien (Krause, $19.99). ~•~ ~•~ ~•~ Paw's Corner
By Sam Mazzotta Playing Nice Isn't This Cat's Nature DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have two cats. One we've had about three years, and the other is a stray we recently adopted that was emaciated and had an infected foot. "Carlo," our older cat, is neutered, and the new cat is a (probably unspayed) female. She is terrified of Carlo. Once they got into a fight, which made her even more terrified. We have kept her separated from Carlo until she is built up and her infected foot heals. We would like to reintroduce them to each other under our supervision, but don't know exactly how to do it. Any advice? -- Mary F. via e-mail DEAR MARY: For the moment, allow the new cat to heal. Then, take her to the vet to find out if she is spayed, and if not, get that done. Having her spayed probably won't guarantee peace in the house, but it will protect her from pregnancy if she gets outside. Getting the pair to get along will be difficult. It's not impossible, but there's a good chance that the best relationship they'll have is a mutual respect of each other's territory. Keep Carlo and the new cat separated when you're not home. When you are at home, have them interact in "neutral territory" (away from food dishes and cat boxes). Keep a shaker can of coins at hand. If their hissing rises in pitch or a paw swats out -- or all-out war begins -- shake the can hard near them. Gradually increase the amount of time that the cats spend together in neutral territory. Keep your voice calm but firm during these interactions. While they get used to each other, keep their food and litter boxes apart. If they improve relations, you can try gradually moving their food dishes into one common area. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

By Ronda Addy Hydrotherapy has long been used to improve the health of people, and in recent years, it has become a popular type of canine therapy. It can improve a dog’s mobility, muscle strength, endurance, range of motion and flexibility. Until recently, canine hydrotherapy was most prevalent in England, with several specialized facilities there as well as the Canine Hydrotherapy Association, a nonprofit group designed to connect members and set standards for treatment. The United States now has the Association of Canine Water Therapy. Canine hydrotherapy may be used for any number of reasons, including rehabilitation before and after surgery, fitness, weight loss, mental stimulation and fun. There are two basic types of hydrotherapy. One requires dogs to swim against the current in an exercise pool, providing them with a complete workout and good cardiac conditioning. The other requires dogs to walk against the force of water on an underwater treadmill, giving therapists more control over the speed and depth of water and resistance used. It also makes dogs fearful of the water more comfortable. Dogs typically undergo a program designed for their specific needs and their owner’s goals in a pool heated between 80 and

Some of these symptoms can be contributed to other diseases, and your vet will need to rule those out. There is no cure for CCD, but there is a drug treatment that can help. If your dog responds to it, they will need to be on the medication for the rest of their life. There are side effects, which you vet will discuss with you. They might also suggest changes in diet and food supplements to protect your dog’s brain cells. In addition to drug treatment, your vet might suggest you take some measures to make your dog’s life easier. Some of these may include: • Not moving or changing the furniture • Eliminating clutter to make a wide pathway throughout the house • Creating ramps where there are stairs • Recognizing your dog’s limits when it comes to introducing to them to new toys, food, animals or people • Sticking to a routine feeding, watering and walking schedule • Keeping commands short, simple and soft • Encouraging gentle, short, involved play sessions As your dog ages, it’s important to pay attention to their behavior and not to dismiss changes as signs of old age. You must be patient and empathize with how your dog must be feeling. Unlike people, they cannot voice their frustrations. Your continued love and respect are what they need the most. They’re still your best friend.

It Really Is For The Birds
By Ronda Addy Congratulations, you are now the proud parent of a feathered companion. You have everything in place-the cage, the toys and the food. You’ve made your home bird friendly. You’re all ready to go, right? Not quite. You need a vet that knows something about avian medicine. While any vet that pays dues to the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) can call themselves an avian vet, true avian vets have an avian certification from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). To earn this certificate, vets must have six years of extensive, documented avian experience or formal training, plus pass a series of complicated exams. To find a qualified avian vet, ask around. Talk with other bird owners, avian rescue facilities, breeders and organizations to see whom they use. Ask pet stores for referrals. Check the Yellow Pages for vets that treat birds and the Web site of the Association of Avian Veterinarians to search for an ABVP certified vet in your area. When you find an avian vet, check them out. Interview them by phone first. Find out where they studied, what their specialty was and if they have any additional training. Find out how many birds they handle on weekly basis. Next, visit the vet’s practice. Is it clean? How do the technicians interact with the animals? What kind of condition is the equipment in? If the vet is not avian certified, do they have access to someone that is? Can they be reached in an emergency? If they go on vacation or become ill, who takes over the practice? Bring your bird in for an exam so you can see how comfortable the vet and techs are with handling them. Does the vet spend some time with you chatting about potential health problems of your pet and what you can do to avoid them? Do they recommend a healthy diet? Do they recommend magazines that can help you learn more about your pet? Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification of things you don’t understand. If at anytime you are unhappy with your vet, don’t be afraid to switch. If you are limited in your vet choices, talk to your vet and let them know you

~•~ ~•~ ~•~ It’s Tough Getting Old
By Ronda Addy As your canine companion gets older, their muzzle will turn gray, their hearing and vision will diminish, and their energy will wane. These are all natural signs of aging. Should you detect more severe changes in your dog, especially in their personality, you might want to have them tested for Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD). Similar to Alzheimer’s disease, CCD stems from physical changes in the brain and strikes dogs age 10 and older. Dogs affected by CCD no longer learn, think or remember as they once did, which causes behavioral changes. Symptoms of CCD vary and often include: • Failing to respond to name or familiar commands • Failing to recognize or greet others or being

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • "I love to cut coupons that might look like a good deal. Sometimes, when I get to the store, I find that I would do better with the store brand. However, some people love certain brands, so I always leave the coupon with the item if I know I'm not going to use it. I'm always happy to share!" -- A.J. in Missouri • "You can create new Christmas postcards from last year's holiday cards. Print out a postcard template on adhesive paper and cut out matching-size pieces from the fronts of cards you received in the past. Write your message (or add it to the template before you print it), address and go. The biggest bonus is the price difference between firstclass mail and postcards." -- P.C. in Minnesota • "When making your favorite holiday cookie recipe, try this trick (if you can): Drop dough by spoonfuls on a small broiler sheet (or a plate covered with aluminum foil), then freeze. When frozen, the balls can be broken up and stored in a freezer-safe bag. To make a few cookies at a time, you can take them out and cook from frozen. It's magic." -- C.B. in Indianawill clean the air in the home of its recipient. Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Create Your Own Family Heirloom If you start now, you have time to make the best holiday gift your family has ever had. What I have in mind is called Life Story Writing. You’ll tell pieces of your

life story, either written down or as an oral history on tape or video, and give it as a gift to your family. Here’s a suggestion for getting started: As quickly as you can, make a list of your life’s early events, things your family might not know, jotting down a word or two to remind yourself later. Make the list as long as you can, and keep it handy because other things will come to mind as you get started. By events, I don’t necessarily mean big things. It’s in the small, everyday life occurrences you’ll find the greatest value. If you have a computer, use that. Copy the files onto CDs. If you have a tape recorder, use that to record your stories. Tapes can be duplicated. Or you handwrite your stories, if that is easiest for you. Still don’t know how to start? Here are some ideas to get you going. “I learned a hard lesson when ...” “One thing I never told my parents was ...” “The best day of my childhood was ...” “The first car I ever had was ...” “My first job was ...” “I got caught doing ...” The more details, the better. Even the smallest descriptive detail can make your story come alive. If telling your life story is

something you’d like to do, but you want help with it, ask among your friends who has a camcorder or who can transcribe what you write. Don’t believe that your story has no value. It does! Chances are your family will want more chapters! Consider this as chapter one in a family heirloom. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected] (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

THANK YOU TO ALL who voted for me in the November 3rd Election. -Clair Sweeley p FOR RENT- 2 bedroom apartment, has appliances, utilities are included in rent, $475/mo. No pets. 814-465-3373. 2/24p FOR RENT- 1 bedroom apartment in Port Allegany, Pa. $300 a month plus security deposit. For more information, call after 3pm 814-598-5206. 2/24p Share traditions your family has enjoyed yearly, too, and include favorites everyone would like this year. When my kids were young, they made a tradition of spreading out their sleeping bags by the Christmas tree after we decorated it, where they slept all night long. Once your list is complete (be sure to keep it manageable), mark the activities on your personal calendar. Then the kids can make a paper cutout garland -one cutout for each day until Christmas. To make the garland, cut apart brown paper bags to make two large pieces of paper. Fold each piece across the top, forming a double layer large enough to fit a gingerbread-shaped cookie cutter. Place the cookie cutter on the paper with the top of its head on the fold. Trace around the shape and continue until you have made 25 figures. Cut out the figures, being careful not to cut through the fold. Let the kids color features on the shapes. Number from 1 to 25, then open them up and print on the inside the activity that corresponds

KID-FRIENDLY HOLIDAY COUNTDOWN CALENDAR Before your holiday to-do list gets the best of you, here’s a preseason “get organized” project the whole family can do together. Not only will you get a handle on the approaching flurry of activity, but you’ll have fun with your kids as you anticipate daily events leading up to Christmas. In the next day or two, get together as an entire family and talk about the activities everyone would like to do in December. Consider the basics, such as attending the Christmas concert at church, wrapping gifts to mail to out-of-town relatives and friends, delivering Cub Scout wreaths and so on until the 25th.

with the day on the front. Lay 2 1/ 2 yards of wide holiday ribbon on your work surface and slip each figure over the ribbon, beginning with figure 1. Glue the backside of the ribbon to the figures to keep them in place. Then put a dot of glue on the inside bottom of each figure and pinch it shut. Hang the countdown line across your mantel or a large window. Each morning until Christmas, let the children open the gingerbread person for the day to remind everyone of the activity inside. “The grandkids are coming!” tip: Bake a batch of gingerbread cookies together. Decorate and share with neighbors and friends. *** Donna Erickson’s awardwinning television series “Donna’s Day” airs on public television nationwide. THE KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis HOLIDAY GIFTS FROM THE KITCHEN Whether the economy is up or down, gifts from the kitchen are easy and inexpensive to make, and are always welcome during the holidays. Sachets and potpourri make beautiful and aromatic Christmas gifts. Sachets can made of a variety of herbs or potpourri and are simple to make. The bath sachets may be placed directly into the tub or tied to the faucet so that the hot water passes through the herbal mixture as the bath is drawn. Sachet bags also may be placed inside clothes drawers, tucked into the corners of couches or armchairs, or placed inside of closets. Any number of creative combinations may be used to make potpourri. Spices, flowers, essential oils, your favorite perfume, dried herbs and citrus peels all make a wonderful potpourri. Using a fixative -- such as tincture of benzoin, styrax, orris root or muskene -- will extend the life of the perfume and ingredients. Most fixatives can be purchased at craft stores. Remember, gifts from the heart are part of the true meaning of

Christmas. These easy-to-make recipes for bath sachets, potpourri and rubbing lotion will be fragrant reminders long after the holiday season is over. BATH SACHETS 2 cups dried herbs (lavender, sage, rosemary, pennyroyal, lemon verbena, camomile, thyme or mint -- alone or in any combination) 8 (4-inch) squares of cheesecloth or cotton (8 small handkerchiefs work well) 8 (12-inch) lengths of ribbon or lace Place the herbs in a plastic bag. Roll a rolling pin back and forth over the herbs until they are slightly crushed. Place 1/4 cup of the dried herbs in the center of the cloth square. Gather the square in a pouf and knot a piece of ribbon or lace around the neck of the pouf to secure the herbs. Make ribbon or lace into a bow, leaving the ends long enough to tie the bath sachet to a faucet. Makes 8 bath sachets.

ROSE PETAL POTPOURRI 3 cups dried rose petals 2 cups dried lavender 1 cup dried lemon verbena 1 tablespoon dried lemon peel 1 tablespoon allspice 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon cloves 1 1/2 tablespoons orris root

In a large jar, combine the rose petals and lavender. In a medium bowl, mix together the lemon verbena, lemon peel, allspice, cinnamon, cloves and orris root. Pour the lemon mixture into the jar containing the rose petals and lavender. Cover jar tightly and shake ingredients. Let potpourri stand for 3 to 4 weeks, shaking mixture frequently to combine the scents. Makes 6 cups. To give as gifts: 8 small drawstring bags or 8 (4inch) squares of cheesecloth or cotton (8 small handkerchiefs work well) 8 (12-inch) lengths of ribbon or lace Place the potpourri in a decorative bag with a drawstring, or to make a sachet, place 1/4 cup of the potpourri in the center of a cloth square. Gather the square in a pouf and knot a piece of ribbon or lace around the neck of the pouf to secure the potpourri. Make the ribbon or the lace into a bow. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is known as The Kitchen Diva and is the executive producer and host of “The Kitchen Diva!” cooking show on Hulu.com. DOLLARS AND SENSE BY David Uffington Homebuying Scams: Don’t be a Victim The extension of the government’s homebuyer program has coaxed many would-be buyers out into the real-estate market. The program (an $8,000 credit to first-time homebuyers or a $6,500 credit to certain current homeowners) has convinced many that this is the time to buy. However, bad subprime mortgages and shady real-estate dealings are not a thing of the past. Yes, there are new laws governing the mortgage industry, but the game is the same -- only the specifics have changed. “Homebuyers Beware: Who’s Ripping You Off Now? -- What You Must Know About the New Rules of Mortgage and Credit” is a must-read for anyone who’s buying real estate right now. If you also are dealing with bad credit, this book can help. Author Carolyn Warren’s insider knowledge comes from a background in the mortgage industry (a dozen years), some of them spent in the subprime real-estate area. When she writes about the lies and the scams, it’s because she’s seen them up close. Warren provides hundreds of insider tips about buying or refinancing a house, including: • Nine ways to raise your credit score, including getting bad credit erased from your file. • The 10-step loan process: Know what to expect so you’ll be aware when things don’t proceed the way they should. • How to recover from a foreclosure and buy another house. • How to pick a real-estate agent. (No, they’re not necessarily on your side.) Twelve reasons to use a Buyer’s Agent. • How to refinance and not get ripped off -- 10 things you need to know. • Comparing loan options for the best deal. • Listening for code words that indicate you’re about to get ripped off. • What the Good Faith Estimate has to cover -- and what surprise costs could show up at closing. • Locking in a rate. • The truth about fees. What fees do you really have to pay? Why “no fee” loans can cost you more. • Junk fees explained: ancillary fee, e-mail fee, doc prep fee, doc review fee, courier fees, photo review fee, satisfaction fee and more are ways for lenders to get more of your money. By using even some of the ideas in “Homebuyers Beware,” you’ll save yourself thousands of dollars, and probably a few headaches, too. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected] (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

How many of you wait up to watch David Letterman on the “Late Show”? I do. And sometimes I wonder about what he thinks is amusing, like dumping a load of pumpkins from the roof of a skyscraper on to the street below, leaving the pavement full of squashed pumpkins. Or a load of cotton bales, leaving them all over the street. Or once a truck full of ice. Funny? I don’t think so. What do you think? And how do you like Sandra Bullock as a blonde in her latest movie, “The Blind Side”? That’s what you’ll be seeing for now. And speaking of Bullock, as yet I’ve had no word as to whether she will take up permanent resident in that mansion she purchased in the New Orleans Garden District. The good news is that my source tells me Chris Pine will soon be back from Philadelphia, where he’s been shooting a film. And when he returns, she will have him call me. Oh joy! Not since Clark Gable has an actor set so many feminine hearts on fire. Not Leo. Not George. CHRIS! And speaking of Leo, Tobey, et al., I presume they are busily doing their

holiday shopping, because of late they have not been capering up and down the boulevard. (Translated: nightclubbing.) It’s big. It’s heavy. It’s packed full of pictures and copy about Hollywood: The stars. Where they go. Where they eat. Things to do, and pictures of them doing it. It’s a big, big book titled “The World in Vogue” (Knopf). It costs $475, and if that’s what you want -- a colossal coffee-table book -- to me, this is it! This time, her hair was long and blond. That was Charlize Theron when she attended the premiere of “The Road,” along with Viggo Mortensen at the gorgeous Chinese Theater on Sunset Boulevard. Her man of the moment was there, but didn’t pose for the cameras. And to all of you who plan a trip to filmtown, be sure to take in the Chinese Theater. It’s a numero uno attraction. Candice Bergen joins the cast of “The Romantics,” which also stars Anna Paquin and Katie Holmes. Along with the passing years, Candice manages to keep busy before the cameras and also in her private life. How many of you remember her famous father, ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, and her beautiful mother, Frances, also an actress? George Clooney finds time not only to act, but to executive produce. (And, I might add, “to date the ladies.”) His next production will be titled “Delta,” about an unusual Memphis cop who lives with his mother and moonlights as an Elvis impersonator. At the moment, no word as to whether “Gorgeous George” will have a role in the film, too. Also at the moment, I cannot give you the name of his “lady love” because I do not think there is just one. ***

NOTICE
As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving is approaching and many families across the country will enjoy spending quality time together. Unfortunately, some families will not get to spend time together as a whole because someone they love is battling a drug or alcohol addiction. An addiction can cause a separation in families and will only end when the person receives the professional help that they need. If you or anyone you love is addicted to drugs or alcohol call Narconon at 1-800-468-6933 to speak to a trained counselor or you can visit our web site at www.stopaddiction.com for more information on how to save your loved one’s life and have a Happy Thanksgiving. fb Quote The man who has planted a garden feels that he has done something for the good of the world. -Vita Sackville-West

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING TWO Spiced Apple Pancake For the puffiest pancake, use a cast-iron skillet. If you don’t have one, choose a heavy 12-inch skillet with a bottom that is at least 10 inches in diameter and has an oven-safe handle. 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 2 tablespoons water 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons sugar 1 1/2 pounds (3 to 4 medium) Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 8 wedges 3 large eggs 3/4 cup milk 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1. Preheat oven to 450 F. In 12-inch cast-iron skillet, heat butter, water and 1/2 cup sugar over medium-high heat to boiling. Add apple wedges; cook 12 to 15 minutes or until apples are golden and sugar mixture begins to caramelize, stirring occasionally. 2. Meanwhile, in blender or food processor with knife blade attached, place eggs, milk, flour, pumpkin pie spice, salt and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar, adding liquid ingredients to blender first. Blend until batter is smooth. 3. When apple mixture in skillet is deep golden, pour batter over apples. Place skillet in oven; bake 15 to 17 minutes or until puffed and lightly browned. Serve immediately. Makes 8 servings.
