Healthy Key Lime Pie Fat-free sweetened condensed milk and fat-free yogurt trim the fat and calories from this luscious lime pie. 1 1/4 cups low-fat graham cracker crumbs 4 tablespoons trans-fat free vegetable oil spread (60 percent to 70 percent oil) 1 tablespoon sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup cold water 1 envelope unflavored gelatin 22 Key limes or 4 to 5 regular limes 1 can (14-ounce) fat-free sweetened condensed milk 1 1/2 cup plain fat-free yogurt 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In 9inch glass pie plate, mix crumbs with spread, sugar and salt to moisten. With hand, press onto bottom and up sides of pie plate. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, until golden. Cool until ready to fill.

2. Meanwhile, to 1-quart saucepan, add water; sprinkle with gelatin. Let stand 2 minutes to soften. Cook on low to dissolve, stirring. Remove from heat. 3. From limes, grate 2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 1/2 cup juice; if using Key limes, do not use grated peel -- it will make filling taste bitter. In bowl, whisk lime peel and juice, milk and yogurt. Whisk in gelatin mixture. 4. Spoon filling into crust. Cover; refrigerate at least 2 hours to set. Serves 10. • Each serving: About 235 calories, 5g total fat (1g saturated), 6mg cholesterol, 185mg sodium, 42g total carbohydrate, 7g protein. Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc. is offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls course, every Wednesday and Friday, throughout the month of May, starting May 5th and ending May 28th. The class is scheduled 2:00pm - 4:00pm, at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, NY. Each class will build upon the previous week making it extremely important to attend all sessions. Cost is $10.00; reimbursable after successful completion of the program. Scholarships are available upon request. A workbook is provided and refreshments are served. Pre-registration is required by contacting Melissa Williams, Project Coordinator with the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc. at 585-593-5223 ext. 15, by Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Space is limited so don’t hesitate to register today. fb

Things can move pretty quickly in the world of sports, and nothing can change the landscape of one’s favorite team quicker than a sudden trade -- particularly to one’s division rival. Such is the case at the Pennsylvania and Maryland border these days. Donovan McNabb has hit the Beltway, and Philadelphia isn’t sure what’s hit it yet. Donovan McNabb was to the Philly fan what Patrick Ewing was to the Knicks fan -- both were larger-than-life stars who possessed enormous talent but, alas, couldn’t bring home the championship. No matter what they accomplished during their lustrous careers, without a championship, McNabb will turn 34 next season. And though McNabb has lost his mobility, his style of quarterbacking would seem to suit Shanahan well. While it has always proven foolish to underestimate McNabb and Shanahan, make no mistake about this Redskins team, it is not the “Hogs” of the ‘80s. And while that may seem like a high bar to measure a team by, it is an appropriate one. Those are the teams that won the NFC East and took home titles. Philadelphia now turns to Kevin Kolb, 10 years younger than McNabb and the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 300 yards in each of his first two career starts. Those are the sorts of things that have Philly fans showing optimism. And guess what Kolb does during his offseason? He hunts hogs (no lie). Philadelphia better hope so, because McNabb will be loaded for bear when he makes his burgundy-clad return to Philadelphia. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter and publisher of The Kansas City Luminary. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

ring McNabb will be known as “the guy who got tired in the Super Bowl,” just like Ewing, one of the greats of his era, will be remembered for “the finger roll.” For the past 10 seasons, McNabb has been the face of football in Philadelphia. McNabb is the Eagles’ all-time leader in career wins, pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns. Despite this, McNabb never seemed to earn the respect befitting a quarterback of his stature. The boos started to rain in Philadelphia, and when the Cowboys ushered them out of the playoffs last season, the team’s brass seemed anxious to usher him out of town, too. McNabb joins a Redskins franchise that has been in complete disarray for more than a decade. With the exception of the brief Joe Gibbs nostalgia tour, the team has over paid free agents, pinned its hopes on coaches like Steve Spurrier and Jim Zorn, and squandered draft picks. Now, led by Mike Shanahan, skeptical fans are wondering if McNabb and the former Denver coach can bring visions of John Elway to Redskins Park. Like Elway when he took the Broncos to the

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A FRESH AIR CHILD THIS SUMMER! Sign up NOW to make a difference in a Fresh Air child’s life! Volunteer with The Fresh Air Fund’s local committee or apply to become a host family and ensure that summer 2010 is special for New York City children. Each summer, close to 5,000 children, ages six to 18, enjoy two-week vacations with volunteer host families in suburban and small town communities across 13 Northeastern states and Ontario, Canada. Local Fresh Air Fund committee members recruit host families, reach out to the community and coordinate fun activities for families and children. As one committee member explains, “Volunteering with The Fresh Air Fund has allowed me to make a real difference in the lives of deserving children, while getting to meet other enthusiastic community members who care deeply about the program. It has been a very worthwhile experience from the beginning!” Volunteers in Central New York need your help to create another fun-filled summer for children from New York City’s low-income communities, such as eight-year-old Justin of Brooklyn. “We made hot dogs and s’mores over the fire. I’ve never cooked outside before!” For more information on how you can join your local Fresh Air volunteer team or become a host this summer, call Marie Canfield at 315-446-8453 or The Fresh Air Fund at (800) 3670003. Try using one as a table protector when repotting plants. Or, use one to drag a pile of soil or mulch around the yard. They can even be draped to create a greenhouse type of effect if you are expecting an unseasonably cold night. • "If your broom or mop has a hole in the top of the handle, you can thread a shower curtain ring through that hole to hang it up better. Some of the loops are too small to hang, in my opinion, but if you get a nice-size shower curtain ring, you will have plenty of room." -- M.G. in Illinois Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton

After leading in the Cup points standings for four straight races earlier this season, Kevin Harvick is looking to take over in NASCAR's biggest series. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) Year of Harvick? All things considered, this could be the year Kevin Harvick has been awaiting. Harvick, 34, replaced Dale Earnhardt at Richard Childress

Racing after Earnhardt's death in the Daytona 500 in 2001. He won his first (now) Sprint Cup race in his third try. He has won the Nationwide Series championship twice. He was Raybestos Rookie of the Year in both Nationwide and Cup. But Harvick hasn't actually won at the Sprint Cup level since the 2007 Daytona 500. "It's been a decent start to the year, for sure," he said. "Obviously, we've had a couple of chances to win and haven't quite gotten that done, but the guys are doing a great job." Decent start, huh? Harvick led the Cup point standings for four straight races, though he fell to fourth after a subpar showing at Martinsville. He and wife DeLana run Kevin Harvick Inc., which is near the head of the class in the Camping World Truck and Nationwide series. Ron Hornaday drove one of the Kevin Harvick Inc. entries to the Truck championship last year. Everything seems to be coming up roses for the Bakersfield, Calif.,

native, who manages to have fun in spite of business obligations. "I think having fun -- and running well -- is something that eases your mind on everything else," said Harvick, "and there is just no pressure when you are racing in Nationwide or the Truck series. You can go and really push the limits, and find those limits, and do things you normally wouldn't do just because there's

really nothing at stake. "It's fun. It eases my mind. It lets me relax. Some people would rather relax by not doing anything. For me, I'm at the track. I would rather be in a vehicle on the race track because I feel like there is always something you can learn. It's just a matter of approach as to how you relax, and that's how I like to relax." What isn't relaxing is chasing

Jimmie Johnson. "It just motivates you to keep working on your stuff and keep trying to make it better," said Harvick. "They (Johnson's team) haven't won three out of the first six races by being lucky, though. They win them because they have all their stuff together and when they get a lucky break, they capitalize on it and make things happen."

Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. E-mail Monte at [email protected]. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On April 16, 1947, in Texas City’s port on Galveston Bay, a fire aboard the French freighter Grandcamp ignites ammonium nitrate, causing a massive blast that destroys much of the city and takes nearly 600 lives. The fire department tried to douse the flames, but the ship was so hot that the water from their fire hoses instantly vaporized. • On April 17, 1964, the Ford Mustang is officially unveiled by Henry Ford II at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The car debuted that same day, and almost 22,000 Mustangs were immediately snapped up by buyers. Named for a World War II fighter plane, the first models carried a starting price tag of around $2,300. • On April 18, 1983, Joan Benoit wins her second Boston Marathon in the women’s division with a time of 2:22:43. The inaugural Boston Marathon was run on April 19, 1897, and was a men-only event until 1972, when women were officially allowed to compete. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

CCMH REPORTS HIGH MARKS ON HCAHPS SURVEY The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) recently released its latest patient survey findings in which Charles Cole Memorial Hospital exceeded patient satisfaction levels among most hospitals in the state as well as the country. The website, www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov allows the public to compare hospital results against other hospitals to measure how well facilities care for patients. Visitors can compare up to three hospitals and also view how they compare to the state and national results. CCMH scored well in areas including: nurses and doctors always communicated well, patients always received help as soon as they wanted, pain was always well controlled, staff always explained medicines before giving them, patients’ rooms and bathrooms were always kept clean, and patients were given information about what to do during their recovery at home. Hospital Compare was created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Department of Health and Human Services and members of the Hospital Quality Alliance: Improving Care Through Information. fb

Handy Celery When I buy celery, I immediately chop it up, separate it, and put it into snack size bags. It’s ready, washed and edible. I do the same with carrots and fruits that can be cut up and put in baggies. Lynne Extra Frozen Veggies When I use frozen vegetables from a bag for dinner, I save a small portion in the bag in one spot in the freezer. It’s usually too much for the two of us to finish the whole bag anyway. Then when I make soup, I have small amounts of different frozen vegetables ready to add to my soup. A small amount of different vegetables adds color and nutrition to all kinds of soups. Judy W.

OGH HOSTING ANNUAL MEETING OF WESTERN NEW YORK/ROCHESTER REGIONAL AUXILIARY Dozens of auxilian and volunteer leaders from area hospitals will be attending the annual meeting of the Western New York/Rochester Regional Auxiliary on Monday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Olean General Hospital’s first-floor Education Center. The meeting will open with a welcoming address by Timothy J. Finan, President and CEO of Olean General and parent company Upper Allegheny Health System. The keynote speaker will be Jennifer Carter, Director and Trustee of Auxiliary Services for the Healthcare Association of New York State. “We will have nearly 40 auxilian and volunteer leaders from rural and metropolitan hospitals attending this meeting,” said Suzanne Gaughn, Olean General’s Manager of Volunteer Services. “Olean General is thrilled to be hosting this annual event,” she added. Following Ms. Carter’s presentation and tour of the hospital’s gift shop, a luncheon meeting will feature a roundtable discussion and an opportunity to network with other auxilians and volunteer leaders, Mrs. Gaughn said. “We will discuss Auxiliary and volunteer programs used throughout the region to support our hospitals and the patients they serve,” she said. “This should prove to be a very beneficial roundtable discussion with a lot of information sharing,” Mrs. Gaughn said. Olean General and Bradford Regional Medical Center are members of Upper Allegheny Health System. fb

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It seems that Warren G. Harding, the 29th president of the United States, was something of a gambler. During one hand of poker he bet the White House china -- and lost it. *** • The Australia Zoo was recently the site of an attempted escape -- by a 137-pound orangutan named Karta. The ingenious primate evidently short-circuited the electric fence around her enclosure using a stick, then stacked up more sticks to climb over the fence.

S.W. SMITH MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY AND BOOKMOBILE NEWS Get ready to “Make a Splash at the Library” by joining the Summer Reading Club at the S.W. Smith Library & Bookmobile. Starting June 3, 4 & 5, patrons can register to join one of three clubs: K to 6th grade, Teens or Adults. Patrons who read 10 or more books will be invited to a Pizza Party in August. The Smith Library is located at 22 Church Street in Port Allegany, PA 16743; telephone no. 814-642-9210. The Library has received an Accountability grant from Port Allegany High School to purchase materials to aid in literacy. So far, 85 new children and young adult books have been purchased. New audio books have been purchased through memorials given to the Library. Stop in to see our newest selections. The Library will also have e-books, the latest development in the reading world, for circulation. A recent article in Newsweek magazine highlights the importance of reading and public libraries. Libraries must keep abreast of the technology available, but holding that book in one’s hands and turning the pages will continue to provide that special connection. Computers were used 345 times at the Library in March. Patrons may bring their own laptops using the Library’s wireless connection during library open hours. A patron has purchased two nonfiction books to be circulated by SWS: Too Good to Be True (The Rise and Fall of Bernie Madoff) by Erin Arvedlund (the untold story of the Madoff scandal, by one of the first journalists to question his investment practices). The other book is Game Change by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin which tells the story of Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime--the 2008 Presidential Election. Intensive research has been accomplished by these authors on subjects that impact all our lives. A little effort on our part to read the results of their hard scholarship will be more valuable to us than the radical shouting of some newscasters. f

The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to hire an outside contractor to fast-track Vietnam veterans’ claims for “presumption of service connection” illnesses caused by Agent Orange. Part of the process will be to determine what, if any, other information is needed on a claim. That will mean medical records and exams. This is supposed to push the claims through more quickly. Getting started will take time, however. At this point a contract should be awarded soon. Solutions proposed to the VA will take 90 days. Actually doing any of the work will take 150 days. Even if you weren’t in Vietnam, if you have any of the illnesses that are considered presumptive from Agent Orange exposure, file your claim now. VA chief Eric Shinseki recently added three more illnesses to the list. It’s expected that 200,000 veterans will file in the next couple years, based on those three new illnesses. In case you haven’t seen the whole list of presumptive illnesses, here it is: acute and subacute peripheral neuropathy, AL amyloidosis, B cell leukemias, chloracne (or similar acneform disease), chronic lymphocytic leukemia, diabetes mellitus (Type 2), Hodgkin’s disease, ischemic heart disease, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease, porphyria cutanea tarda, prostate cancer,

respiratory cancers, soft tissue sarcoma (other than osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma and mesothelioma). Shinseki has said that his No. 1 goal is to clear the backlog of veterans claims. Although it hasn’t worked well in the past with outside contractors, many of those contracts were written before he came aboard. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected] PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Second-Guessing Dog’s Death Dear Paw’s Corner: I recently lost my dog “Mischa” to an illness, and I’m overwhelmed with sadness and guilt. Her death was very sudden; one day she was fine and then she was not. I can’t help wondering if there was anything I could have done to prevent this from happening. Did I give her the wrong food? Was there something in her medications she might have had a reaction to? I’ve had no answers from the vet. Am I wrong for constantly second-guessing myself? Should I just get over it? - Devastated in Dallas Dear Devasted: First, I’m very sorry for your loss. Pets are so much a part of our families that losing them can be incredibly difficult. “Getting over” the loss of a pet isn’t something anyone should be told to do -- it’s not unusual to feel sadness for a pet years after its death. A close friend of mine still speaks fondly of his dog King, who died when he was a boy. And I often miss pets I lost years ago. I personally feel that adults can grieve openly for pets in a way that they can’t grieve for humans. We have to bear up and be brave at the loss of a relative or friend, perhaps be the one who must organize everything. But for a lost pet there are no such barriers to just grieving for them. On the other hand, you want answers for Mischa’s sudden death. More questions should be asked of the veterinarian. What did her symptoms point to -- an infection, a reaction to something? That the vet has no answer at all is curious, but I’m not familiar with the circumstances. Continue pressing for answers from the vet.

before the wart leaves. If home remedies bring no success, the family doctor can step in with more involved treatments. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past six months, I have had no energy. I teach third grade. My doctor checked my thyroid gland, and it turns out it’s not working well. I am now taking replacement thyroid hormone. How long does it take for me to recover my former energy? Also, my cholesterol was high. Is that part of this deal? -M.O. ANSWER: It can take three to six months for your hormone level to reach a normal plateau. That’s when you’ll feel like your old self again. A person with low thyroid hormone often has a rise in blood cholesterol. The level will fall as soon as the replacement hormone is working. The booklet on thyroid problems discusses both underand overactive thyroid glands. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What causes skin tags? They hang from my neck and under my arms. -D.H. ANSWER: Their cause isn’t known. Your doctor can clip them off without any fuss. By age 69, 60 percent of us have one or more of them. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2010 North America Synd., Inc. DONOHUE: Would you address plantar warts? I’ve been told they’re from a virus in the body and that nothing can be done for them or keep them from recurring. Is this so? -- D.W. ANSWER: All warts, wherever they are, come from an infection with one of the more than 100 human papillomaviruses -- HPV. Individual members of the HPV family have a preference for particular body sites. Some head for the soles of the feet to cause plantar warts. “Plantar” is derived from a Latin word meaning “sole of the foot.” If a plantar wart isn’t kicking up a fuss, it can be left alone. It’s not going to do any harm. Many such warts disappear without any treatment. Some can return, and there is not a whole lot to do about preventing a second visit. However, there is much to do about a plantar wart that hurts. The method chosen for wart removal must not leave a scar. A scar on the bottom of the foot causes more trouble than does a wart. Look on the shelves of any drugstore for wart-removal products that contain salicylic acid, and follow the directions for application carefully. Be patient. It takes more than one application to get rid of the wart. Duct tape sometimes works. That’s right -- duct tape, the tape you buy in a hardware store. Cover the wart with a piece of it for six days. Remove the tape, soak the foot and then gently rub the wart with a pumice stone, obtainable in drugstores. Reapply the tape after 12 hours. You might have to repeat this procedure for two months

During National Healthcare Decisions Day at Olean General, Sister Dana said, “We’ll also have organ donation information available and we’ll provide assistance for those who want to register.” She added, “There’s a tremendous need for organ and tissue donors.” According to the officials from Upstate New York Transplant Services, “In the U.S., there are nearly 100,000 individuals waiting for transplants and many thousands more in need of tissue and cornea transplants. Due to the shortage of donated organs and tissues, not everyone receives the transplant they need.” For more information about advance directives or organ donation, contact Sister Dana at 375-6970. fb

OGH SUPPLYING INFORMATION, REGISTRATION ASSISTANCE DURING NATIONAL HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY Free public information and registration assistance will be available about advance directives when Olean General Hospital participates in National Healthcare Decisions Day on Friday, April 16, 9 a.m. to noon, in the first-floor Education Center. Sister Dana Hollis, OSF, manager of Pastoral Care Services at Olean General, and Nancy Krall, a patient representative at the hospital, will provide information and registration assistance for people to complete healthcare proxies which specify desired treatment in the event they cannot communicate their healthcare decisions. “By creating an advance directive, you are making your preferences about medical care known before you’re faced with a serious injury or illness,” said Sister Dana. “This will spare your loved ones the stress of making decisions about your care when you are unable because they will know your wishes.” Advance directives allow adults to specify the kinds of care and treatments they do and do not wish to receive, she said. Currently, only about 25 percent of adults in the U.S. have executed an advance directive of any kind. A living will is one type of advance directive. “It is a written, legal document that describes the kind of medical treatments or life-sustaining treatments you would want if you were seriously ill with little hope of recovery and unable to speak for yourself,” Sister Dana said. However, a living will doesn’t let you select someone to make decisions for you. A healthcare power of attorney is another kind of advance directive. This states whom you have chosen to make healthcare decisions for you should you become physically or mentally unable to do so. It becomes active anytime you are unconscious or unable to make medical decisions.

COLLECTING By Larry Cox Q: I have four Jim Beam bottles and wonder if I should hold on them. Can you advise me? -- Robert, Grand Junction, Colo. A: In 1953, the Jim Beam company packaged its bourbon in a special Christmas/New Year ceramic decanter. Because the holiday decanters sold well, others were soon produced. For example, in 1955, the company issued the Regal China series, the following year political figures and an elephant and donkey were featured, and a series honoring American states began in 1958 to commemorate the admission of Alaska and Hawaii into the Union. Although you didn’t tell me which Beam bottles you have, a collector told me that most are worth less than $10 each. There are, of course, exceptions. Some of the heavy hitters include Don Giovanni, $140-$180 (1980); First National Bank of Chicago, $1,900-$2,400 (1964); Foremost-Speckled Beauty, $500-$600 (1956); and Fox, Red Distillery, $1,100-$1,300. On the other hand, a special Franklin Mint issue is valued at $5 by Michael Polak, author of the Antique Trader Bottles: Identification and Price Guide (Krause, $19.99). If you collect or love bottles, this excellent guide should be in your personal library.
