Quite simply, warehouse pricing saves you time and money. Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Brown’s! With the power of the internet, today’s car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize what’s a good deal and what’s not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot, we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, that’s where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value. We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelly Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelly Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Don’t wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days.

What is Warehouse Pricing?

Reduce Reduce your family's consumption, garbage and even budget with some simple acts: • Buy items in bulk to reduce packaging waste. Skip paper and plastic bags by bringing your own cloth shopping bag. • Trade bottled water for filtered water in a reusable water bottle and use washable rags instead of paper towels when you're cleaning your home. • Decrease energy usage by turning off lights when you leave the room and unplugging noncritical electronics. Reuse Find fun ways to reuse items: • A swap party is a fun way to share gently used goodies such as books and clothing, while spending time with family and friends. • Create new meals using leftovers. Last night's chicken breast can become tonight's chicken noodle soup. • Find new uses for items instead of throwing them out, such as cutting old T-shirts into rags. Recycle Recycling is a great-and simpleway to be more Earth friendly. Many cities offer recycling programs with curbside pick-up to make recycling easy. • Recyclable materials include plastic, paper, aluminum and glass. Items that are recyclable have a recycling symbol and a number on them. • Get your family involved by setting up color-coded bins for recyclables and use a chart to track your family's recycling. • Support recycling in the classroom through programs such as Elmer's Glue Crew. To learn how your child's classroom can get involved in the program and begin recycling today, visit www.elmers gluecrew.com. Be Car Care Aware Beware The Perils Of Potholes bouncing excessively on rough roads. These suggest the steering and suspension-key safety-related systems-have been damaged. These largely determine your car's ride and handling. Key components are shocks and struts, the steering knuckle, ball joints, the steering rack or box, bearings, seals and hub units and tie-rod ends. • Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight path, and uneven tire wear. These symptoms mean there's an alignment problem. Proper wheel alignment is important for the life span of tires and helps ensure safe handling. • Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls, or dents in the rim. These problems will be visible and should be checked out as soon as possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and the road in all sorts of driving conditions. Where To Get Help If you've hit a pothole, the Car Care Council can help you find a repair shop. The council's Web site features a "Find a Shop" locator at www.carcare.org. The Car Care Council promotes the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council's "Car Care Guide" or for more information, visit www.carcare.org. *** I have friends in overalls whose friendship I would not swap for the favor of the kings of the world. -Thomas A. Your pet's tags should be up to date and include your cell phone number (remember, you're on the road). Prior to leaving, you also may want to visit the veterinarian. If your pet usually gets carsick or restless when traveling, the vet may be able to suggest medications or other treatments that could help. • Check your insurance. See if your pet is covered by your car insurance. Progressive protects dogs and cats up to $1,000 if they're hurt when you're in an accident or in the event of a loss like a car theft or fire. The coverage is free to auto and RV customers with Collision insurance. For more information, visit www.progressive.com/pet. *** The weak can never forgive. Most drivers know immediately when they hit a pothole. It's also important to know what to do next. (NAPSA)-As the ravages of winter subside and temperatures rise, there is probably a pothole out there with your name on it, cautions the Car Care Council. Record cold temperatures, snow and rainfall in many parts of the country have created the perfect storm for the motorists' dreaded "perils of potholes period." Most drivers know immediately when they hit a pothole. The heart-stopping, teethjarring noise is hard to mistake. It's not always immediately clear, however, if it hurt the vehicle or how much. Hitting a pothole can damage tires, wheels, steering and suspension, wheel alignment and more. Motorists who experience any of the following warning signs after hitting a pothole should have a professional technician inspect the vehicle. Warning Signs • Loss of control, swaying when making routine turns, bottoming out on city streets or

(NAPSA)-Eighteen percent of travelers vacation with their pet, according to the U.S. Travel Association. If you're packing up your pet for a road trip this year, here are a few easy tips that can help you hit the road knowing that your four-legged friend will have a comfortable ride and you'll have a safe, relaxing vacation: • Prep your pets for travel. Ease them into a longer journey by taking them along on shorter jaunts around town in the days prior. Once the big trip arrives, maintain your pet's feeding and bathroom schedule as much as possible. Make stops roughly every three hours for water and exercise. If your pet has a favorite toy or treat, bring it along. The familiarity will make travel easier. • Pack a pet travel tote. It should

Simple Ways To Be Earth Friendly Every Day (NAPSA)-Now more than ever, families are hearing the phrase "Reduce. Reuse. Recycle." Not only are the "three Rs" critical to the planet, they are also a great way to save money and spend time with your family. However, many people may not understand how simple-and fun-it is to incorporate these activities into their home and daily lives. Every year, people focus on recycling on Earth Day, but protecting the environment is something that can be done every day and by every member of the family, including the littlest members. It's important to teach children about the "three Rs" by encouraging Earth-friendly actions in the home and at school. Elmer's is helping to educate children about environmental stewardship in the classroom through the Elmer's Glue Crew Recycling Program. The Elmer's Glue Crew program promotes recycling by encouraging teachers and students to collect and recycle empty glue bottles and glue sticks. In 2009, more than 1.2 million elementary school-aged children participated in the program and more than 2 million glue bottles and glue sticks were recycled. Here are some simple ways to be more Earth friendly every day and get the entire family involved:

OGH’S OBSTETRICAL UNIT, NURSERY EXPANSION WILL ENHANCE COMFORT AND EFFICIENCY Olean General Hospital has begun a significant renovation project in the fourth-floor Obstetrical Unit and Nursery to make mothers and newborn babies more comfortable, and allow staff to perform their clinical duties with greater efficiency. For many families the Obstetrical Unit and Nursery is their first experience at Olean General Hospital. Although patient satisfaction scores are at 99 percent, it’s become time to update the unit that was last renovated in 1991. Since then, nearly 15,000 babies have been born in the unit, said hospital officials. “The renovation is needed because during a high census period our nursery space is not adequate. Our patient volumes have increased dramatically over the past five years. Sometimes it’s been difficult to complete special testing procedures in the nursery due to lack of space,” said Mary Beyth, RN, Nurse Manager for the Obstetrical Unit and Nursery. The three-phase project, expected to cost $500,000, is scheduled to be completed by the end of July, said Joseph Gaughn, Director of Facilities Services. The project’s first phase will involve tripling the size of the 14-bed nursery to 600 square feet, and adding a new waiting room with a refreshment station, Mr. Gaughn said. The expanded nursery will be able to accommodate higher volumes and offer more space for special procedures such as hearing testing, said Mrs. Beyth. “The project’s second phase will bring an updated nurses’ station so staff can perform their clinical tasks more efficiently,” said Mrs. Beyth. The final project phase will focus on the 14 postpartum rooms for mothers. “These rooms will get new patient beds, furniture and oak-trimmed bassinets. Olean General Hospital also is looking to make the postpartum rooms more accommodating for visitors. We want to make these rooms more family-friendly, including having each one equipped with sleep chairs so family members can visit newborn mothers,” said Mrs. Beyth. Additional upgrades will involve having new finishes added to the patient rooms and corridors to coordinate with the interior design of the rest of the hospital,” Mrs. Beyth noted. In support of the project, “The 2009 Employee Campaign set records in both the number of employees contributing and the amount raised. Last year, 377 employees participated, a 21 percent increase over the previous year’s record participation of 311 employees,” said Olean General Hospital Foundation President Karen Fohl, who is also Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Olean General Hospital. “This OB renovation project is something the employees feel passionate about, therefore participation was very high in the campaign. It raised $70,000, an increase of more than 24 percent over the $56,276 raised the previous year,” Mrs. Fohl said. Meanwhile, “We are currently in the midst of a community Capital Campaign to support this project because it’s for the babies. It is our hope that donors will consider making gifts for Mother’s Day in honor or memory of their mothers this year. In recognition and appreciation, the Foundation will gladly send a special card to the mother being honored in this special way,” added Mrs. Fohl. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization which raises funds to financially support Olean General Hospital’s mission of providing high-quality, cost-effective healthcare to those in the communities it serves. fb MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, polar explorer Richard E. There you’ll find an entire museum devoted to housing a rather extensive collection of umbrella covers. • In the United States, January is the least popular month for weddings. • It’s been claimed that 19th-century English naturalist Charles Darwin devoted eight years to studying the lowly barnacle. • We all know that the day after Thanksgiving is commonly known as Black Friday, thanks to all the crowds seeking out deals on Christmas gifts, but have you ever wondered how it got that name? It seems that the moniker originated back in 1965 when the Philadelphia police department came up with the name after having to deal with the traffic jams and shopping crowds. *** THOUGHT FOR THE DAY “Everybody believes in something and everybody, by virtue of the fact that they believe in something, use that something to support their own existence.” -- Frank Zappa (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

These giant men, many weighing over 300 pounds, can blow up hot water bottles like balloons, snap baseball bats like twigs, lift telephone poles overhead, rip phone books and license plates like pieces of paper, and smash walls of ice and concrete. The Power Team has several world record holders, former NFL football players, and professional wrestlers. They have been endorsed by over 50 governors, senators, and congressmen for their positive contribution to the lives of America’s families. In 1976, The Power Team became the “Original” strength team and evangelistic association, utilizing visually explosive feats of strength to communicate positive messages to audiences in churches, civic centers, stadiums, and coliseums all across the nation, as well as the world. 3/20fb FACTS ABOUT THE FRESH AIR FUND FRESH AIR FUND FRIENDLY TOWN PROGRAM- Fresh Air children, boys and girls from six to 18 years old, visit over 300 Fresh Air Friendly Towns in the summer. Fresh Air children on first-time visits to Friendly Town host families are six to 12 years old and stay for up to two weeks. The program also has a special one-week option for New York City families who would like to host children on their summer vacations in the country. Sixty-five percent of all children are reinvited to stay with the same host families, year after year. Reinvited youngsters may continue with The Fund through age 18, and many spend the entire summer in the country. Fresh Air children and volunteer families often form bonds of friendship that last a lifetime. Independent Health Members- Independent Health has alerted GOACC to a mandate that applies to fully-insured and self-funded groups in certain states, including New York. The Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA) requires that group health plans allow employees and dependents who are eligible for, but not enrolled in, a group health plan to enroll in the plan upon meeting certain conditions. A model notice for use by employers has been released by the US Department of Labor and can be found at www.dol.gov/ebsa/chipmodelnotice.doc Independent Health has advised that “Groups that renew or renewed their plan year between February 4, 2010 and April 30, 2010 are required to send the model notice to their employees. All other groups must provide the notice to their employees before their next plan year renewal date and on an annual basis thereafter.” GOACC assumes no responsibility in this matter but is passing on information that has been identified and received from the carrier. fb

Who Contributes What
Divorce and economics are changing the rules. Gone are the days when only the father of the bride is expected to pick up the wedding tab. Families today are much more flexible. One bridal consultant, Peggy, estimates that about 70 percent of weddings are paid for from multiple sources. Depending upon the financial ability of everyone who wishes to be involved, you can divide the expenses in myriad ways. The important thing to remember is that you must have the details surrounding financial contributions ironed out before making commitments with wedding service suppliers. Even if it’s possible to cancel contracts without huge penalties, you don’t need the embarrassment or aggravation. Wedding planning is supposed to be fun. There may be a number of family members who would like to help you out financially. Work your way through the list of possibilities. Jan, another bridal consultant, suggests that you write down what is promised. When you get your finances lined up, use your planning notebook to record details of the discussions and money offers. If you’re really concerned about someone reneging later on, you may want to give this person a copy of your notes. On the other hand, if you’ve gotten a financial commitment by less- thanhonorable means, be prepared for some repercussions. Opening up discussions with all participating family members early on will actually take the pressure off. It’s your wedding and you need to know exactly where you stand. You may need to revise plans or refigure your own financial contribution. There are actually quite a number of ways to finance a wedding. Take a look at some of the following options. • If the bride’s mother or father is wealthy, the wealthy parent pays for everything. • When the bride’s divorced parents still have a friendly relationship, they can simply split the costs. They can do this equally or on a different split based on each parent’s means. Usually, one parent assumes most or all of the planning responsibility. • Bride’s divorced parents agree to pay for everything and divide areas of responsibility and expense. Robin, who consults on many weddings, proposes the following example: The mother’s list centers around the ceremony and includes invitations, bride’s dress/ veil, location, rentals, decorations and transportation. The father’s list centers around the reception and includes catering, cake, location and related rentals, music and decorations. • Grandparents and/or other family members step in and assume the wedding expense. While this option occurs more often than you might expect, it generally results in a modest, rather than lavish, wedding. After all, for most grandparents, the traditional wedding was held at home-very

all-in-the-family. • If the bridegroom’s family is wealthy (and the bride’s is not), they pay for everything. In this situation, ceremony invitations are still sent out in the bride’s parents’ names. The bridegroom’s parents host the reception and issue those invitations. Sometimes both sets of parents consider themselves sponsors of the wedding ceremony and those invitations will reflect this by using both sets of names. • B r i d e g r o o m ’s divorced parents pay for weddings when bride is from overseas. Refer to the second and the third options in which the bride’s divorced parents take on the financial

responsibility. It’s basically the same concept. • Bride’s and groom’s families share the cost. This is becoming the preferred way of keeping everything fair and balanced. Consultant Toni told me that the groom’s parents tend to be more involved in the planning when the bride’s parents are divorced. The offer to share the financial responsibility is extended by the groom’s parents to the bride’s parents. It’s still considered unfashionable for the bride’s parents to ask for help. If your fiancé’s parents don’t voluntarily come forward and he doesn’t want to discuss the idea with them, move on to the next option.

deals they offer. If you are planning to use an outside wine supplier, look for one that will give you a good deal and allow you to return unopened bottles. There is no sure way to determine how much wine you will need. The average bottle provides four to six glasses, and you will probably need half a bottle per guest. Chances are you will not use all of the wine, so don’t let waiters open all of the bottles at the start of the reception. As the reception draws to a close, tell the waiters not to open any more bottles. There is no reason why you have to take out a mortgage to serve good wine at your reception. With all the choices available, the hardest part will probably be limiting your choices. To make the selection process easier, consider throwing a wine-tasting party and inviting some of the wedding party and guests over. After all, they are the ones who will be drinking the wine. Offer several different choices in brown bags with labels. The favorites will be the first bottles empty.

A Lucky Sixpence For Your Shoe
Wealth and good fortune for the newlyweds is brought to the couple if a lucky sixpence is worn in one of the shoes of the bride. The luck attributed to the sixpence came about in 1551, when it was introduced by Edward VI, of England. Later becoming a part of the wedding tradition for brides of the Victorian era, it is enjoying a comeback among brides of today. Last minted in England in 1970, the sixpence is an authentic souvenir of gentler times. “Once upon a time, long ago,” relates Beverly Clark, renowned wedding expert and author, “it was customary for the bride to place a shiny, silver sixpence in her slipper on her wedding day. Good fortune would be hers, not just for one special moment, but throughout the voyage on the sea of matrimony, or so the fable goes.”

Pick That One
By Ronda Addy Brides and grooms want their big day to be special for them and their guests. One way to make it special is to serve good wine. You taste and select the food and the cake for your wedding, so why shouldn’t you do the same with the wine? Before you start shopping for wine, you need to check with the venue where your reception will be held and make sure they allow alcohol on the premises. If so, the number and types of wine available will depend upon where you live. If you live in an area with several vineyards, you will probably have more choices. When selecting wine for your reception, you need to take several factors into consideration, including the preferences of your guests, the time and length of your reception, the type of food served, and most importantly, your budget.

The guests you invite to your reception will play an important part in your decision. How many actually drink wine? Do they enjoy drinking a glass or two, or do they just sip enough to be social? Do they prefer red, white or dessert wine? Would most of them be happier with beer? Would they care if you didn’t serve any wine? Answering these questions will give you some idea as to what kind of and how much wine to order. The time of year and day you are having the reception can also influence the wine you serve. In the summer at an outdoor reception, you will want to keep guests cool and serve lighter, refreshing wine. In the winter, you will want to keep guests warm and serve red wines instead of white. People are likely to drink less in the afternoon, so if you are having an afternoon wedding, you may need less wine. Are you serving chicken, beef or fish at your reception? The wine and food should go together. Unless you have daring guests who like to try new things, you should stick to old favorites like Merlots or Chardonnays. You have enough things to spend money on at your wedding. Don’t go overboard with the wine. Negotiate with your caterer or supplier to get the best deal you can. Find out what kind of package

Chill!
By Ronda Addy You have so many things to do before your wedding day that you can’t imagine getting everything done. Everyone has their own stories, good and bad, of what they did and maybe you should consider doing this, that or the other for your wedding. You are getting stressed out, which doesn’t make you happy in what should be a happy time. You need to realize that planning a wedding can be stressful and be prepared to deal with that fact. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that everything will go perfectly. This will only add to your stress when things don’t. Focus on what you have to work with, not on what you don’t have. Everyone will have their own ideas about your wedding, but keep in mind you can’t please everyone. You and your spouse-to-be are the only ones you need to please because it is your

wedding. In order to deal with stress, you need to recognize it. Symptoms include headaches, moodiness, poor concentration, stomachaches, problems sleeping, racing thoughts and irritability. Should these symptoms persist or get worse, they could indicate a more serious condition, so pay attention to what your body is telling you. After you have acknowledged you are feeling stressed, there are a few things you can do to cope with it. These include: • Space out deadlines and set them far enough ahead to allow for problems. Don’t let everything go until the last minute. • Delegate responsibilities to people you trust. Check in with them occasionally but let them handle things. • Set boundaries and be assertive. If others are interfering too much or taking up too much of your time, let them know how you feel without being too aggressive. • Don’t take everything so seriously. Try to laugh when things go wrong. • Spend time with your spouse-to-be. Discuss everything and make sure the wedding plans are going the way you both want them to. • Stay healthy. Get

enough sleep, eat right and exercise. Avoid outside stimulators like alcohol, drugs, caffeine, nicotine and sugar. • Take a breather when necessary. When feeling stressed, practice some relaxation or meditation exercises or go for a walk. Don’t be afraid to talk to others about how you are feeling. • Pamper yourself. Go to the movies, read a book, take a bubble bath or spend a day at the spa. • Keep your activities in check. It’s only natural for others to be excited for you and want to get together to celebrate but don’t overextend yourself with too many social obligations. If you don’t have time to get together, let others know that. Your friends will understand that you are busy. With so much emphasis put on the wedding, it can be easy to forget that the event is just the beginning of your marriage. Your wedding will be over within a matter of hours and then the real work will begin on creating a long, successful marriage. If your wedding isn’t perfect, it’s not the end of the world. In fact it, it might make it more memorable, so go with the flow, as they say. Don’t let things get to you and keep your stress under control.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Introducing Kids to Home Improvement Q: Recently, when a roofing crew made significant repairs to our roof due to storm damage, my two sons and daughter were fascinated by all the activity. They followed the crew around and pestered them with questions. I think learning about home repair is a valuable skill, and I’d like the kids to be involved in more projects, but I am unable to perform many home-repair tasks myself. I also wonder if they’re old enough to learn various tasks: They are 10, 8 and 5. Do you have any suggestions? - Gloria G., Fort Worth, Texas A: Getting kids involved in home improvement and repair projects can be very rewarding. Of course, their age, abilities and maturity should be taken into account when deciding how much they can be allowed to do. A 5-year-old shouldn’t be hammering nails, but a 10-year-old would probably do a brilliant job (and handle the hammer responsibly). There are programs out there for kids. Some are offered by publicservice departments, others by nonprofit organizations (including

Scouting, which teaches kids a myriad of life skills), while others are paid classes geared to different age levels. Check around and see if something is available for all three kids, or at least the two older ones. Look around your home as well. Not all home-improvement projects have to be big or involved. They can be as simple as patching a nail hole or hanging a picture. Sit down with the kids and plan out how you’ll all tackle the project. Who will gather the tools and supplies needed, who will do the actual work, who will help carry items back and forth? If you have a trusted neighbor who frequently does home repairs and is willing to teach the kids a thing or two, you have another option to allow them to learn. Keep in mind that the kids might only be initially interested. But teaching them new skills and letting them take on more responsibility can have rewards far beyond just the simple act of fixing or improving something. HOME TIPS: Take a child’s age and maturity level into account when teaching home improvement skills, for their own safety. c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

EASY: The easy way to find a buyer for items you want to sell is a reader ad in the Moneysaver Shopping Guide or Shopping News. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • William Howard Taft, the 18th president of the United States, was a large man. Quite a large man. In fact, he was so large that his 300-pound bulk got stuck in a White House bathtub, and he had to summon help to extricate himself. • The French town of Versailles was originally built solely to house the staff of the extravagant palace. *** Thought for the Day: “The telling of jokes is an art of its own, and it always rises from some emotional threat. The best jokes are dangerous, and dangerous because they are in some way truthful.” -- Kurt Vonnegut (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Freeze juice boxes for small coolers; they help keep snacks cool and will be perfect to drink as they melt. Milk jugs can be cleaned and filled with water to be frozen. They make long-lasting ice blocks that maintain a cold temperature better for a larger cooler filled with food.

I use a measuring cup. Microwave on high until boiling, about four minutes. Let it set in the microwave for a few minutes and then remove carefully. You also can boil the mixture on the stove, and it will make the room smell fresh.” -- R.F. in Indiana • “Window blinds can be dusted by wiping each blade with a dryer sheet. It discourages dust from settling, and I find that I have to dust them less often.” -- C.S. in Delaware • “Use pencil shavings (most are made of cedar wood) around the base of plants that attract pesky bugs. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel *** • On May 11, 1947, the B.F. Goodrich Company of Akron, Ohio, announces it has developed a tubeless tire. While Goodrich awaited approval from the U.S. Patent Office, the tubeless tires underwent high-speed road testing. Within three years, the tubeless tire came standard on most new automobiles. *** • On May 13, 1958, during a goodwill trip through Latin America, Vice President Richard Nixon’s car is attacked by an angry crowd and nearly overturned while traveling through Caracas, Venezuela. President Eisenhower dispatched U.S. troops to the area to rescue Nixon, and the vice president left Venezuela ahead of schedule. *** • On May 16, 1968, Donald E. Ballard, U.S. Navy Corpsman, is awarded the Medal of Honor for action in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam. While directing the removal of a wounded man, an enemy soldier tossed a grenade into the group. Ballard vaulted over the stretcher and pulled the grenade under his body. The grenade did not go off. Nevertheless, he received the Medal of Honor for his selfless act of courage. *** • On May 15, 1982, “Ebony And Ivory,” a duet by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, takes the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100. This continued the pop-music trend of pairing successful duos, such as Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, and Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

And he must hold to this illusion even when he knows it is not true.” *** • If you’ve never heard of the quagga, don’t blame yourself. The creature, once found on the plains of Africa, has been extinct since 1883. An odd-looking creature, this subspecies of zebra was once thought to be half-zebra, half horse. Though the front part of its body had the zebra’s stripes, those stripes faded out mid-body and the rest of the equine looked remarkably like a common horse. ***

In 1888, Bertha drove an experimental three-wheel model on a surprise visit to her mother 65 miles away, becoming the first person to drive an automobile over a long distance. During the journey, she unclogged the car’s fuel line using one of her hairpins. She also used the garter on her stocking to fix a broken ignition.

BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 1” by Stephenie Meyer and Young Kim Reviewed by Ealish Waddell In case you’ve been living on a desert island for the past couple of years, the gist of the novel “Twilight” is this: Quiet girl moves to gloomy town and falls for brooding classmate, who turns out to be equally drawn to her, despite the pesky fact that he is a vampire who might at any moment snap, kill her and consume all her blood. With talk of soulmates, destinies and lots and lots of yearning, it’s pure wish-fulfillment for romantic misfits who just long to be understood. Perhaps that’s why the stories seem to have struck a chord not just with dreamy tweens, but with readers of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to the hit movies and endless parade of tangential merchandise that surround the “Twilight” phenomenon, now there’s another version of the original story being offered up to these voracious fans. In concert with author Stephenie Meyer, artist Young Kim has created an extremely faithful graphic-novel adaptation of the tale. The book is labeled “Volume 1” and only covers the first half of the prose version, but it’s a strong enough effort to give readers hope that the rest of the planned series will be equally effective. Mostly black and white with a few judicious splashes of watercolor, Young’s version of “Twilight” is certainly appealing visually. The style of the layout, characters and backgrounds owes much to the contemporary [SET ITAL]manhwa[END ITAL] techniques common to comics in Kim’s native Korea (similar to [SET ITAL]manga[END ITAL] in Japan) -- the art is vivid, fluid and inviting, with a soft, often sketchy quality that’s pleasing to the eye. Meanwhile, the narrative is brisk and easy to follow, deftly hitting all the important plot highs that the expectant fan will be waiting for with palpitating heart. For while it’s certainly possible for this to be a reader’s first exposure to “Twilight,” it is even more likely to be a supplement to the story for those who have already digested the plot elsewhere. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 7, 1902, Mount Pele on the French Caribbean island of Martinique begins the deadliest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The city of Saint Pierre was buried and 30,000 people died when a cloud of gas with a temperature of more than 3,000 F sent an avalanche of boiling ash down the side of the mountain. • On May 4, 1970, in Kent, Ohio, National Guardsmen fire their weapons at a group of antiwar demonstrators on the Kent State University campus, killing four people, wounding eight and permanently paralyzing another. In 1974, a federal court dropped all charges levied against the Ohio National Guardsmen.

As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

it’s going to be hard work, right in the first line of Chapter One, then moves quickly into the all-important first step: Find out where your money’s going (spreadsheets are provided in the book). Step two, facing your debt, is where Vaz-Oxlade takes things beyond the typical “get out of debt” book. Not only are debts written down and categorized, they’re critiqued and analyzed for what they really cost.

There is plenty of hands-on help. Focus on long-term goals. Decide what you really want, because with debt control, it matters. Write down your core values, prioritize and set a goal. Find friends who are compatible with that goal (spending less to have fun). Swap bad habits for good ones. “Debt-Free Forever” explains how to get a handle on disappearing money (what happens when the pocket monster eats all the change when you break a $20), 401(k) plans, insurance, credit cards and more. There are worksheets, guidelines, instructions on how to make a budget -everything you need to become debt free, except for a pencil, piece of paper and a calculator. Vaz-Oxlade has a television show called “Til Debt Do Us Part” (about couples in debt) on CNBC and has written 11 books on finances. As she says on her blog: “Money is only a tool. You can use it to your advantage or you can misuse it to your detriment. You decide.” David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected] NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • Here’s a great, decorative way to absorb excess odor in damp spaces (like bathrooms or basements). Wrap a plastic container with pretty shelf paper and add charcoal briquettes or kitty litter to the box. Place a lid on top with holes poked in it. It will absorb the moisture. Check it periodically and replace the contents.

There are scams galore, including those that promise (for a fee) to take your payments and make arrangements with lenders to accept a smaller amount each month. (Unless you send the check yourself, you really don’t know where it’s going.) However, there’s a new book out that talks about strategy, and it’s one you can trust: “Debt-Free Forever (Take Control of Your Money and Your Life)” by Gail Vaz-Oxlade (Collins, $14.95). There’s a lot of no-nonsense tough love in Vaz-Oxlade’s plans, and there should be if a strategy to reduce debt is going to succeed. After all, the average consumer has $16,000 in credit-card debt. But under the humor (yes, there’s that, too) is a sound plan. She tells you upfront that

However, a recent National Parkinson Founda-tion (NPF) survey reported that people under 45 are not likely to recognize the symptoms. The majority of people with young-onset Parkinson's disease see two to three physicians before receiving a correct diagnosis. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive source of information on PD, NPF has launched a Web site, www.parkinson.org. "People can visit their physicians prepared with the most current information and focused questions-which in turn can provide a quicker diagnosis, and ultimately the most appropriate and best available care," says Joyce Oberdorf, NPF's president. Among young-onset Parkinson's patients, these symptoms are reported: tremor (70 percent), general stiffness (39 percent) and loss of sense of smell (16 percent). For more information, call NPF toll-free at (800) 327-4545.

The success of this 7-Layer Pasta Salad comes with each layer contributing a different taste or texture.

(NAPSA)-Experts say all you need for a picnic is good food, good company and a little creativity. For example, if you don't have a picnic basket or cooler, use old book bags lined with cold packs to carry your feast. When it comes to having fun, go back to basics with board games, Frisbees, cards and imagination. Play games such as charades or hide-and-seek or form teams and play softball or dodgeball. Make the menu a team effort as well, with each guest contributing a dish or a beverage. This 7-Layer Pasta Salad combines a variety of flavors and textures into a winning picnic dish. Plus, it can be made a day ahead and customized to your family's

taste. In this case, the seven layers of flavor are enhanced by the addition of a heart-healthy salsa or ranch dressing. One manufacturer, Litehouse Foods, makes a variety of refrigerated dressings, dips and more in small batches without preservatives, MSG or trans fats. They use canola oil, which is recommended by the American Heart Association as part of a heart-healthy diet. For more salad ideas, visit www.30salads30days.com. 7-Layer Pasta Salad (Serves 8) 1 cup fresh spinach 3 cups medium shell pasta, cooked, drained
