All presenting donors at Red Cross blood drives in August are eligible to enter a raffle for a chance to win an Acer Netbook. One Netbook will be given away every day in August. “Summer can be a challenging time for the blood supply,” commented Kay Schwartz, chief executive officer, American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region. “We hope that the possibility of winning a Netbook will encourage blood donors to make and keep appointments during August. We are grateful for the support of Staples and hope people will take advantage of this offer as they get ready for a return to school and fall routine.” Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. The New York - Penn Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood products to 120 hospitals, and must have a sufficient supply of blood and platelets every day to meet hospital demand. Eligible volunteer blood donors are asked to please call 1800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in general good health may be eligible to give blood. Positive identification is required at the time of donation. *Netbook giveaway is provided in conjunction with Staples. Netbooks are non-transferrable and are not redeemable for cash. Your chance to win depends upon the daily number of presenting donors in August. One entry allowed per donation opportunity. Employees of the American Red Cross and Staples are not eligible to enter. All winners will be notified by 9/15/10. fb

IT’S BETTER HOMEMADE I make my own Italian salad dressing mix (I found the recipe from an online recipe site) of dry herbs and seasonings, which I keep in a plastic container or a glass jar with a sealed lid. Long ago, I bought the “make your own” mix that came with a beautiful glass shaker/server with a pour spout lid. After I used it up, I realized that I could make my own mix. I save hundreds of dollars each year by mixing the dry ingredients, and then adding them to the healthy Extra Virgin Olive Oil and water and shaking it into a delicious dressing. You can use your own jar or container as long as you have a sealed lid or cap for it. You could also make other types of dressing in the same manner. -Trish H. in Dravosburg, PA

THE KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis Green Tomatoes -The Fruit of the Vegetable Patch Every year, my small vegetable garden produces far more tomatoes than I can possibly use. As the season wanes, an abundance of green tomatoes forlornly hang photo by aschaeffer on the vine looking for enough sun to turn them into red jewels. I’ve begun searching for unique ways to use green tomatoes as a vegetable and as a fruit in my recipes. Scientifically, tomatoes are classified as a fruit, but since they don’t contain the sweet flavor of most fruits and are typically used in savory dishes, they’re legally classified as a vegetable. Tomatoes are low in calories and a good source of vitamins C, A and K. They are also a very good source of molybdenum, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium and vitamin B-1. In addition, tomatoes contain lycopene, which has antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties. My recipe for Green Tomato and Orange Relish uses green tomatoes like a pickled vegetable. It freezes well, and makes a delicious change from traditional cranberry relish for holiday meals. The spices and flavors of my Green Tomato Spice Cake act as a showcase for the tomato’s fruit-like qualities. Whether you decide to use your abundance of green tomatoes like a vegetable or a fruit, you can’t go wrong with these wonderful recipes! GREEN TOMATO AND ORANGE RELISH 4 medium green tomatoes 1 large purple or Vidalia onion 1 cup orange marmalade 2 cups dark brown sugar 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1. Core the bottom of the green tomato and cut them into quarters. Peel the onion and cut it into quarters. Using a food processor, pulse the green tomato and onion 8 to 10 times, until the pieces become small (“pickle-relish” size). Do not puree. 2. Using a 4-quart, heavy-bottomed pot, put in all the ingredients at once. Cook over low heat for 15 minutes, stirring until blended and the sugar begins to dissolve. 3. Turn the heat to medium and cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. The relish should be syrupy and slightly thick. If it does not seem to have thickened enough, cook the relish 10 minutes more. 4. Cool for 2 hours, and then put the relish in an air-tight container and refrigerate it. The relish can be refrigerated for two weeks. You also can place the cooled relish into plastic zip-lock storage bags and freeze for up to 6 months. Makes 5 cups of relish. GREEN TOMATO SPICE CAKE 1 box spice cake mix 1 1/4 cups water 1/3 cup vegetable oil 3 eggs 2 tablespoons light brown sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped 1 cup raisins (or dried cranberries, craisins or currants) 1 1/2 cups diced green tomatoes 1 large, peeled and diced, Granny Smith apple (about 3/4 to 1 cup) 3/4 cup powdered sugar 1 cup sweetened coconut, toasted, optional Whipped cream, optional 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. In mixing bowl, lightly beat the water, vegetable oil, eggs, and brown sugar until combined, about 2 minutes. Stir in the spice cake mix and flour, and mix until smooth. Stir in the vanilla, pecans or walnuts, raisins, tomatoes and apples. Blend well. 3. Spoon the batter into greased and floured 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Loosen the cake from the sides of the pan with a knife or spatula. Cool for 30 minutes. 4. Using a fine-mesh strainer or a sifter, sprinkle the top with powdered sugar. When serving, top each slice with a tablespoon of coconut and/or whipped cream, if desired. Factors such as the availability of funding, the need to invest in rehabilitation of existing park infrastructure, and other pressing needs in the entire state parks system will influence the sequence and timing of the improvements. The plan is available at w w w. n y s p a r k s . s t a t e . n y. u s / i n s i d e - o u r- a g e n c y / p u b l i c documents.aspx “Hundreds of thousands of people visit Allegany State Park each year to explore the vast mature forest that has developed over the past century as a result of its protection as a public park,” Ash added. “Throughout the master planning process, the members of the public have made it clear that they support maintaining and protecting the natural character of their park, and the master plan will help us preserve this magnificent wilderness.” The plan calls for the designation of a Park Preservation Area totaling roughly 52,000 acres, approximately 83 percent of the parkland. Within Park Preservation Areas, passive public recreation such as hiking, horse-back riding, skiing, biking, backpacking, camping, hunting, and fishing will continue as they have in the past. In the remaining developed portions of the park - which include roads, beaches, snowmobile trails, and developed campgrounds - traditional activities and operations would continue. Other highlights of the plan include: •Expand options for camping by converting campsites to RV sites in the Red House area, setting aside new areas for backpacking and primitive camping, and adding new cabins; •Expand and improve the existing networks of hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling trails, including creating a new 7.6 mile bikeway between Quaker Lake, Cain Hollow and Science Lake; •Improve boating opportunities by adding a new car top boat launch at the southern end of Quaker Lake, deepening the launch area at the existing Quaker Lake and developing a boat rental facility near the Quaker Lake beach area. State Parks has reinstated the master planning process throughout the park system, and Allegany State Park is among the first to complete a new master plan. Park master plans define a long-term, sustainable vision for parks by helping to identify best uses for a specific site, make the most of limited resources, and protect the environment. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees 178 state parks and 35 historic sites. Catch Summer Memories With Do-Together Fun Has it been a while since you let your hair down as a parent? Well, today’s the day to start. The relaxing, less-formal days of summer lend themselves to play and memorable family fun. And

it’s easy to get in the mode when you include your children at various turns in the day’s events. Thirty-four-year-old Margo Farrell, marketing researcher and mom to 5-year-old daughter Arianna and 1-1/2-year-old son Lucas, has discovered that you can make everyday moments special with the kids, even when checking off errands on a weekend “to-do” list. “My husband and I lived in West London, England, for five years where we enjoyed walking from our home to the post office, hardware store, restaurants and boutiques,” she says. “Walking was such an integral and pleasant part of our lifestyle that we intentionally looked for a family home in a ‘walking community’ when we returned to the states.” Now in Minneapolis, walking to neighborhood shops to do Saturday

errands has become routine. “The kids look forward to the jaunt all week long,” she says. “We might pick up a gallon of milk at the coop, find a birthday gift at the toy store or wander over to the bakery to grab freshly baked breadsticks for a special treat. Whether I have only a few minutes, a half-hour or even an entire summer day ahead of me with the kids, there is so much joy in discovering what is around us, right where we live.” Here are some easy, do-together summer ideas to enjoy where you live: --On a walk in a park, along a shoreline or in the woods, tell your children to be on the lookout for nature’s “chairs,” such as a smooth-sided boulder, tree stump or a cozy patch of grass. Stop, relax and share a special snack that you brought along. Tell a story from the point of view of a

squirrel, blue jay or the ant crawling on your cookie. --Visit your local zoo and let your kids be the safari photographers. Organize the photos on your computer when you return, for your own family nature show. --Sit on a hillside or special viewing spot and watch a sunset on a summer evening. Take turns describing the colorful changes in the sky. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. A Guardian Elder Care Facility
BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “Hellbound on His Trail: The Stalking of Martin Luther King Jr. and the International Hunt for His Assassin” by Hampton Sides Reviewed by Larry Cox James Earl Ray, the man who assassinated Martin Luther King Jr., was much more complex than the cardboard redneck he was portrayed to be. Even though he had the reputation for being slow-witted, he managed to escape from two maximum security institutions, juggled several aliases and avoided capture while traveling throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad in an attempt to reach Rhodesia, where he planned to become a mercenary soldier. As author Hampton Sides points out, Ray was profoundly screwed up, but in a profoundly interesting way. For example, he had plastic surgery, took dancing lessons, graduated from bartending school, got into hypnosis, enrolled in a locksmithing course and aspired to be a porn director.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was American actress and comedian Lily Tomlin who made the following sage observation: “Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain.” • According to Henry Heimlich, the inventor of the abdominal thrust technique known as the Heimlich Maneuver, the food upon which people most commonly choke is peanut butter straight out of the jar. • Astronauts on the International Space Station see the sun rise every 90 minutes. • You’ve probably heard that Eskimos have 50 words for different types of snow, but you might not realize that their language doesn’t have a word for just plain snow. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

What separates Sides’ book from others written about the King assassination is the unexpected details, such as his description of the flop house in Memphis where Ray set in motion his shocking murder. It is so vivid, one can almost see the grim, blistered walls and cracked linoleum floors, along with the heady smell of urine and Pine-Sol. After Ray checked into room 5-B and paid $8.50 for a week’s rent, he realized that the best view of the nearby Lorraine Motel where the King party was registered was from a grimy hallway bathroom. As King left room 306 at the Lorraine and paused on the balcony, Ray took his shot. It was a murder that would forever change the course of American history. The irony is that Ray might have gotten away with it if he hadn’t been so fastidious when it came to his laundry. A tiny identifying laundry tag stamped into the inseam of a pair of undershorts found near the scene of the King murder led to his eventual capture. Meticulously researched and elegantly written, “Hellbound on His Trail” is so good on so many levels that it will leave readers breathless.

Hot Days/Hot Deals Sale

Summer Reading The Dog Days are here. It’s hot, Independence Day is well past, and Labor Day is a long way off. Here are a few books that can alleviate the summer doldrums: “Head to Tail Wellness: Western Veterinary Medicine Meets Eastern Wisdom” by Stacy Fuchino, V.M.D. Alternative medicine has gotten sidewise looks in the past from vets and owners alike. It’s fine to go to an acupuncturist yourself, but what good does it do for a dog or cat? Dr. Stacy Fuchino, who has augmented his degree in veterinary medicine with studies in Eastern medicine and Feng Shui, argues that it does a world of good. He presents case studies from his own practice of pets with chronic illnesses that improved following treatment with a combination of Western medical treatment and Eastern practices. “Cat-echisms: Fundamentals of Feline Faith” by Ellis Weiner & Barbara Davilman This is a fine example of the pet-persona genre, which many cat lovers probably will find endearing. “Cat-echisms,” as the title suggests, bases its style on the Catholic method of outlining fundamental beliefs and principles through a question-and-answer series. This is a small book, short enough to read in one sitting or just to leave on your coffee table. “Stay” by Allie Larkin Finally, a bit of fiction to chew on. “Stay” takes a fur-laden twist when our heroine, Savannah, impulsively buys a puppy off the Internet. (I won’t go into all the reasons why Internet pet sales are wrong, but the author does take pains to point out many of them.) If you’ve ever owned

I have tried researching it but haven't been able to find out much. Can you help me? -- Sherry, Albuquerque, N.M. A: The Model 4H Electric Bridge Table was introduced by the Hammond Clock Company in 1932. Concealed within the table is a mechanism that automatically deals four 13-card bridge hands, all without the need to shuffle the deck. Since the device was marketed during the early years of the Great Depression and was expensive, they are extremely rare. I spoke to several experts, and they seem to agree that your table is probably worth "several thousand dollars." To find out exactly how much, the time has come to hire a good appraiser. When hiring an appraiser, don't hesitate to ask for references and his or her field of expertise. An appraiser who is an expert on pottery might not be all that helpful when it comes to bridge tables. *** Q: I have a Pepsi figurine that was made in Germany. How can I establish how much it might be worth? -- Minnie, Fairport, N.Y. A: One of the earliest Pepsi advertising slogans was "For Brain Fag and Body Drag," used in about 1905. Others followed, including "Pepsi Cola Hits the Spot" (1930s), "A Big OK, From the USA" (WWII-era), and "Be Socialable, Have a Pepsi" (1950s). I was unable to find your item referenced in Soda Pop Collectors Price Guide by Allan Petretti (Krause, $34.99), and suggest a dealer who specializes in soft-drink memorabilia. Here are three: Kim and Mary Kokles, P.O. Box 495092, Garland, TX 75049; Noel Barrett, P.O. Box 1001, Carversville, PA 18913; and William Morford, RD No. 2, Cazenovia, NY 13035. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service,

1/4 Page ofOur way saying “Thanks for Ads your business!”

In Our August 10th Issue!
Now’s your chance to save! To show our appreciation for your business and to help promote your Summer Sales, Back-to-School Sales, or whatever you choose, we’re offering 1/4 page ads at 1/4 off the normal price in our August 10th Moneysavers.

Ad Deadline: Thursday, August 5, 2010
1/4 Page Ad Dimensions: • 3.2” wide by 12” deep • 5” wide by 8” deep • 6.7” wide by 6” deep • 8.4” wide by 4-4/5” deep • 10.1” wide by 4” deep
If you are using a smaller size ad now, try a 1/4 page during our “Customer Appreciation Ad Sale”. If you run a quarter, half, or full page ad now, try an extra 1/4 page ad with that special item or offer that you want to highlight. Studies show that a quarter page ad is a very effective size. Readers recall the ad copy of a 1/4 page more than they recall ad copy from a smaller ad.

CALCULATE REBATE’S TOTAL COST I love to take advantage of rebates that give me the item for free, but there’s one small catch that shoppers would be wise to consider. Sometimes, the offered item is much more expensive than cheaper brands, and considering that sales tax is usually not included in the rebate, that can bump up the final cost considerably. For example, awhile back, a local store offered a free-after-rebate deal on an expensive brand of shampoo, which cost $9.99. Here in California, tax is more than 8%, so that “free” shampoo cost me over 80 cents, which isn’t much savings over the cheaper brands I normally purchase in the $1 price range. I ended up purchasing it anyway, but I did so with my eyes open, choosing to enjoy a high-end product at a bargain brand price rather than deluding myself into thinking I was getting it for free. Just keep in mind the total, final cost of a rebated item, including the tax and postage to mail it in (if it’s not done online), and compare it to similar, less-expensive products to see if it’s truly the bargain it appears to be. -Diva

(c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc. *** Quote: An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one. -Charles Horton Cooley *** THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Don't Mess With Hidden Wasp Nest Q: Last week, as I was mowing the yard, I noticed a yellow jacket buzzing around one of the windowsills on the back of the house. I didn't pay much attention until later in the day when I saw three hovering in that area, and one crawling under the sill. There may be a nest in that spot. How can I safely get rid of a yellow-jacket nest, if there is one? -- Julie in Kennesaw, Ga. A: I'm not fond of yellow jackets or wasps, so unless the nest is small and easy to remove -like a small wasp's nest on a gutter -- I defer to a professional. Your guess that the yellow jackets have a nest under or behind that windowsill is probably correct. However, to locate it and deal with it, the siding next to the sill may need to be removed. If your home uses vinyl siding panels, this task is usually somewhat easy and can be done without damaging the siding. But if there are yellow jackets under there -- and the nest could harbor many more than you've seen so far -- there's a risk of getting stung. So first, contact a pest-control professional who specializes in removing wasp, bee or yellowjacket nests. He or she may be able to look under the sill and siding without removing anything. Get a quote up front on how much it will cost initially to look at the infestation, and get the removal estimate in writing before the company proceeds with the work. COUCH THEATER -DVD PREVIEWS By DNA Smith PICKS OF THE WEEK “Crumb” (Criterion Collection) (Unrated) -- Director Terry Zwigoff’s documentary of underground comics legend Robert Crumb is like a geek’s “Grey Gardens.” Not only is this a brilliantly loving portrait of a man who almost singlehandly created the underground comics movement, it is also a moving insight into Crumb’s bizarre and troubled family.

Special features include nearly an hour of deleted footage and two commentary tracks: A new track with Terry Zwigoff, and a commentary track from 2006 with Roger Ebert and Zwigoff. It’s worth mentioning that one of Crumb’s closest friends, comics artist Harvey Pekar died on July 12 and also was the subject of the magnificent documentary/biopic: “American Splendor,” which stars Paul Giamatti as Pekar. Even if you aren’t a comics fan, you simply must watch these films. They are more than just a rundown of the artists’ works, they are great movies in their own right. “ M a x Headroom: The Max Complete Series” Headroom (Unrated) -Finally! The ground-breaking, cult cyberpunk series from the 1980s is now on DVD. Both seasons, all 14 episodes, digitally remastered. Matt Frewer stars as Edison Carter, an investigative journalist in a dystopian near-future where television networks control every aspect of civilization -- including the government. While investigating a network’s subversive scheme to control society using Blipverts (1-second commercials), Carter’s consciousness is uploaded to a computer, creating the manic, rogue element known as Max Headroom. “Max Headroom” was a show ahead of its time and was no match in the ratings against powerhouses like “Dallas” and “Miami Vice,” so it was canceled after a few episodes of its second season. *** WORTH A RENTAL “Date Night” (PG-13) -- Steve Carell and Tina Fey star in this uneven farce about a New Jersey

couple who hope to add a little spark to their ho-hum marriage by having a date night in the city, but wind up being mistaken for another couple who are blackmailing a crooked politician. So, what could’ve been a hilarious film about a couple dealing with all the frustrations that go with trying to get around New York (a la “The Out-of-Towners”), we get a ridiculous, unbelievable chase movie that makes absolutely no sense. What saves “Date Night” are the performances by Fey and Carell. Their chemistry and comedic timing elevate a poor script and make the film watchable. I w o u l d n ’ t recommend this DVD as something you’d want in your collection, but it’s worth a rental. COLLECTING By Larry Cox Q: Where can I learn more about four Beatles records I have from

the 1960s? -- H.B., Albuquerque, N.M. A: One of the better references is the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975, compiled by Tim Neely (Krause, $34.99). This hefty 1,375-page guide lists more than 150,000 pop, country, rock, rhythm and blues, and, yes, Beatles recordings. You also might want to scan “The Beatles Digest,” also published by Krause.

As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

It isn’t all movies and TV studios and stars and their homes. Try some small ethnic communities. There’s Chinatown, and Little Tokyo, and Koreatown. All with many restaurants featuring food of their countries and shops laden with goods also native to their countries. Then there is Olvera Street downtown, where the city was founded. Shops and shops laden with everything imaginable from shoes to candles. Add strolling Latinos singing and playing Mexican music, and you just might see a celeb out sightseeing -- just like any other tourist. Nicolas Cage is an excellent actor. Strangely, he’s a very uninteresting interview. On “The Late Show” with David Letterman he didn’t talk about owning a home in the old New Orleans Garden District and all the other actors living there, or the goings-on and the restaurants and the gorgeous food. He did mention his uncle, the great Francis Coppola. Aside to Penelope R. of Atlanta: You ask what Lake Bell is doing. Good question. I know she co-stars in the adult TV comedy “Childrens Hospital,” but not much beyond that. She moved from the building in which I live a couple of years ago. Of all the trophies -- Oscar, Emmy and etc. -- the Screen Actors Guild award is the most beautiful. A gorgeous gold male figure, holding the Mask of Comedy in one hand, Tragedy in the other. The event isn’t until late fall, but already votes are being taken. Sela Ward has joined the cast of “CSI: New York.” She will play an international investigator in from Washington. And longtime star Melina Kanakaredes is exiting the show. Try that name in your spelling bee. At the risk of being called Madam Scrooge, I’m on a rampage. I’m sick of hair. On every show and everywhere in the business it’s long, straight and parted in the middle, looking like it has been on an ironing board, and used as a shawl with the little-nothing dress. Someone said to me, “What do you want, the old short crinkle cut?” (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Construction crews are coming to the end of their busy season and looking for work to keep themselves going over the cooler months, especially the winter. Before you begin: Take written bids from at least three contractors. Be detailed in your specifications when it comes to the type of wood you want, the model and color of cabinets, the number of coats of a specific paint, etc. Ask for references of any contractors you interview, of course, and call them. Ask if the project was completed on time and at the promised cost. But don’t stop there. While it’s still warm and crews are out, drive around your area and make note of the addresses of homes where work is being done, as well as the company name and phone number of any work vehicles in the yard. When the projects are complete, approach the homeowners and ask whether they were satisfied with the work. They might even show you around to see the completed project. Make sure any contract you write is for a fixed price that includes materials and labor. That way you know the bottom line. If you sign a standard contract, read it carefully. Remember: If it’s not in writing, it doesn’t exist. Don’t agree to any clause that can change the deadline, price or materials on your job. While it’s tempting to save money by acting as your own general contractor, you may be happier in the long run if you hire a residential general contractor with the expertise to order supplies and hire and schedule sub-contractors. Remember that while the general contractor will be responsible for a lot of things, you can’t step completely out of the process. With liability insurance and workers’ comp, for example, all crews who step foot on your property need to produce a copy of their certificate before they begin work. When new materials show up, be there when it’s being unloaded and look for damaged or missing material. The general contractor also is responsible for paying the sub-contractors, so you need to require a performance bond to be in place for all levels of contractors. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Thank you to Kathy Cooley, pharmacist at Buchanan Brothers’ Pharmacy in Eldred, Pa. She called and identified the man in this photo as her father, William (Bill) Walther. Bill was the owner of Gustafson’s Drug Store in Eldred from 1953 until his death in 1967. This photo was probably taken in 1964 or 1965 as the soda fountain counter had not been taken out yet.

NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton High hopes for Jeff Gordon

Now through July 31st

Former NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon (right, with team owner Rick Hendricks) is second in the standings despite not winning a race. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) Jeff Gordon's hometown could be considered Vallejo, Calif., where he was born, or Pittsboro, Ind., where he grew up. Based on his record there, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is another place where Gordon feels right at home. He has won NASCAR's annual visit to the Brickyard a record four times. (As an aside, Gordon has won five times at Infineon Raceway, the track closest to his birthplace.) Gordon's most recent Indy victory occurred in 2004. In the five races since then, though, Jimmie Johnson has won three times and Tony Stewart twice. Forty-eight races have passed since Gordon's last victory anywhere. He won at Texas Motor Speedway on April 5, 2009. Still, a winless Gordon is better than most drivers who have won multiple races this year ... literally. Gordon, 38, ranks second in the

Sprint Cup point standings, trailing only Kevin Harvick, and has more top-five finishes (10) than any other driver. "Our team's been consistently running up front," said Gordon. "We just haven't had the car to win or all the pieces as a team to get ourselves into victory lane. "At times we've had the car. For whatever reasons -- blame it on me, blame it on incidents, I don't like to point fingers -- but we haven't gotten to victory lane. We think we've got some things up our sleeve for Indy, but I'm sure that's what a lot of guys out there are thinking." Only five drivers -- Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarbrough -- have ever won more races at NASCAR's highest level than Gordon. Three more victories would put him ahead of everyone except Petty and Pearson. But it's been "82 and holding" ever since the 2009 Texas victory. Some have speculated that the end of Gordon's career is near. He disputes this. "Man, I do (feel old) when I get out of that race car and everything aches," he said, "but no, I mean, I'm still enjoying the sport very, very much. I feel like I'm way more comfortable with where I'm at in the sport today. That's fun. I like all the years of experience that now I get to benefit from. "The only thing I'd change right now is getting some of those wins back. It's tough. It's very competitive. We know we've got to pick up the pace."

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING Grilled Sweet Potatoes We steam and slice sweet potatoes and then give them a turn on the grill to create this deliciously unexpected side dish. 2 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled if you like 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper Parsley, for garnish 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered, direct grilling on medium. 2. In 5- to 6-quart saucepot or Dutch oven, place collapsible steamer basket and 1 inch water. Cover saucepot; heat water to boiling on high on range top. Cut sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch-thick diagonal slices. 3. Place potato slices in steamer basket; reduce heat to low. Cover saucepot and simmer 12 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are just fork-tender; do not overcook. (Potatoes can be steamed a day ahead and refrigerated until ready to grill.) 4. Transfer potato slices to jelly-roll pan; brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper to season both sides. Place potato slices on hot grill grate. By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Don’t Let Bladder Rule Your Life DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I, like the letter-writer P.G., had to run to the bathroom constantly in order not to have an accident. I wanted to see my grandson graduate from college, so I consulted a urologist. He sent me to a place where treatments with an electrical probe were given. I went for six weeks and also did Kegel exercises. The quality of my life changed for the better, and now I square dance and do aerobics. Incontinence is no longer a problem. -- E.M. ANSWER: Electrical stimulation of the pelvic muscles has successfully allowed many women to regain bladder control. It doesn’t work for all, however. The stimulation strengthens muscles that keep the bladder closed, and controls overactive bladder wall muscles that contract forcefully and frequently. Another technique is a device that delivers electric current to spinal nerves in the lower back. If those nerves respond to the current and keep the bladder closed, then a small unit is implanted under the skin for a permanent solution to this problem. One such device is called the InterStim. NECKLACE EXTENDERS When I purchase a necklace and it is too short for some clothing, I add a large paper clip to each end and it makes it longer. The collar or your hair covers the clip. It really helps to convert the necklace to different lengths. Just remember to “crimp” the clips. You wouldn’t want to lose the necklace. -Wendy B.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • For sunburned skin, try using cold mayonnaise as a balm. And next time, wear sunblock! • "I know it's still summer, but I am gearing up for the holidays early. I have been taking advantage of sales all year long to purchase fun, interesting and inexpensive items so that when December rolls around, I will not be caught off guard (or out of cash!). It's not too late to start now." -- S. in Washington • When giving pills to dogs, try this old trick: Hide the pill in peanut butter. It masks the scent and taste of most pills, and will work for many dogs. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
