STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • Before H. Ross Perot became a successful businessman -- and had a brief, somewhat less successful career as a politician -- he broke horses for a living. • Fireflies start to glow in order to attract a mate, and they die soon after finding one.

In the morning, I fix my cup of coffee and get all my pills together. Then I set the bottles on the opposite counter. In the evening, I prep the next day’s pot of coffee and move the bottles back to the coffeemaker. If they are by the coffeemaker, and it’s not set up, I have not taken them yet.” -- M.R. in Florida • Help for mosquito bites: Try rubbing a bit of Vick’s Vapo-Rub into an itchy mosquito bite. The menthol will soothe the itch. • Purchase a set of inexpensive Frisbees at a discount store and use them as food plates in the car or at the picnic table. They can be “filled” with a snack or more, and they travel well, since there is a nice-size “lip” to keep food in place. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

DONNA’S DAY: CREATIVE FAMILY FUN By Donna Erickson Teachable Moments Are Everywhere “Stop, everyone -- a teachable moment,” called out the dad as he and his three school-age kids screeched to a halt on their bikes to check out an unusual scene in our neighborhood. Parked in the middle of a front yard was an enormous drilling rig spattering and spewing mud and water to reach heat 180 feet below the ground for the creation of a new geothermal heating and cooling system for the house. It was a “science 101” lesson in action, as the workers explained to the curious family how they were tapping into the free energy beneath the earth’s surface. Teachable moments abound when you keep a watch for interesting people, places and things in your own community. Here are some ideas to keep kids’ and adults’ minds sharp this summer: --In the morning, take your kids on a mystery outing. Walk or ride by bike, car or public transportation. Give them clues along the way and let them guess as you go. Exciting and unique destinations might be a construction site, fishing wharf or a local historical fort where people are dressed in period clothing, or to view the city from an observation deck of a tall building. --Visit a farmers market to show your child how to choose, weigh and pay for locally grown fresh produce such as tomatoes, zucchini, onions and lettuce. On the way home, talk about where the same vegetables are harvested other times of the year, when it is winter where you live. For dinner, prepare some of the locally grown food, such as corn on the cob. Let kids brush melted butter on the corn with a small, natural-bristle brush when it’s ready to eat. --As the summer progresses, remember special times and keep the do-together fun alive with an ABC memory game. Start with someone in the family who recalls something she did or saw that starts with an “A.” Continue through the alphabet as memories trigger stories of outings, sleepover camp and ballgames. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. To find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.com and link to the NEW Donna’s Day Facebook fan page. Her latest book is “Donna Erickson’s Fabulous Funstuff for Families.”

WAREHOUSE PRICING
We did the homework for you, and can’t wait to see you here at Paul Brown’s! Quite simply, warehouse pricing saves you time and money. Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Brown’s! With the power of the internet, today’s car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize what’s a good deal and what’s not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot, we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, that’s where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value. We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelly Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelly Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Don’t wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days.

stepping in to take her place. “We are delighted to have Sela joining ‘CSI: NY,’” ‘showrunner’ Pam Veasey announced in July. Ward will play an “experienced investigator from Washington, D.C., whose work is driven by her empathy for the victim.” *** Q: I am so happy that season 2 of “Dark Blue” has started back up on TNT. What can we expect for the new season? -- George F., via email A: Star Dylan McDermott told me: “We looked at the first season to see what worked and what didn’t work. We decided to make the show a little lighter in tone, added more humor, and the introduction of Alex Rice as my love interest. We’ve opened it up to a wider audience. It’s still gritty and dark, but adding and making changes opened up the show a lot.” *** Q: Is it true that Steve Carell is leaving “The Office”? Why? The office will be so empty without him! -- David G. in Pennsylvania A: It’s sad, but true. Everyone’s favorite worst boss will be leaving the show when his contract expires in May 2011. He explained to E! Online that he just felt it was time. But don’t worry, as Steve explains: “It certainly doesn’t mean the end of the show. I think it’s just a dynamic change, which could be a good thing, actually. Add some new life and some new energy. I see it as a positive in general for the show.” Some good news on the casting front, though, is the return of Amy Ryan as Holly for eight episodes, as well as Melora Hardin as Jan (no word as of yet on how many episodes). I can’t wait to see how Michael handles this one! *** Q: I thought Edward Norton was fabulous as Bruce Banner in “The Incredible Hulk.” Why won’t he reprise his role in Marvel’s “The Avengers”? -- Jason J., via e-mail A: The usually private actor recently took to his official Facebook page to discount any rumors that might start swirling because he won’t be the Hulk in “The Avengers.” According to his statement, Marvel did extend the offer for Edward to reprise his role in the new movie, however, he didn’t go into detail as to why the negotiations broke down. He did state: “It seems it won’t work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in ‘The Avengers.’ I sincerely hoped it could happen and be great for everyone, but it hasn’t turned out as we all hoped. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at [email protected]. CCMH & POTTER COUNTY HOSPICE HOSTED A RETREAT FOR CHILDREN Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and Potter County Hospice hosted a retreat at the Patterson Cancer Care Center for children who have dealt with grief due to death, divorce or other loss. The second annual Lifetimes Retreat featured activities for the children as a means to express their feelings and work through the grieving process. Children played a spider web game, made age-appropriate bereavement packets, wrote letters to loved ones and “sent them to heaven” via helium balloons, and drew pictures of what makes them sad and “erased their sadness” with water balloons. “Hospice decided to start Lifetimes Retreat because kids grieve too but they grieve differently than adults,” said Bonnie Kratzer, director, home health and hospice. “Through the retreat we give the kids an avenue to allow grieving and talking with other kids going through the same losses. We hope that kids feel that it’s ok to grieve for their loved ones and know that others have the same feelings that they have.”

ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-reviewed evaluation which is conducted by board certified physicians and medical physicists. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their finds to the ACR’s committee on accreditation, which provides the practice with a comprehensive report. as we are likely to get. Lamarr was more than just a beautiful woman, Barton writes. Her talent for mathematics led her to co-develop spread-spectrum technology during World War II, an innovation that is still used today in mobilephone and Wi-Fi communications, as well as a radio-controlled torpedoguidance system. Lamarr, who died in 2000, was much more complex than the simplistic image often portrayed, and that is why she continues to fascinate. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc. Throughout the 1940s, Lamarr was epitome of glamour and sex appeal and had one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood. Her image dominated magazine covers, her misadventures made international news headlines and her hyper-sexualized roles seemed to mirror her own tumultuous life. Lamarr was born in Vienna in 1914, the pampered daughter of a DAYS 2010 Jewish banker. After several insignificant roles, she appeared in Old Home “Ecstasy,” a notorious Czech art Days 2010 will film issued in 1933. It launched her go down in acting career. In Hollywood, she history as the eventually co-starred in several year that ended major productions that included with a splash. “Boom Town,” “White Cargo” and Saturday was Cecil B. Her first challenge was to separate the real Hedy Lamarr from the myths, an especially difficult task since much of what was reported about the actress during her lifetime -- even the “facts” published in her 1966 autobiography “Ecstasy and Me” -are full of inaccuracies. FDIC’s Consumer Newsletter The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation puts out a free quarterly newsletter for consumers. The latest edition includes: --An overview of consumer protections on credit cards. The article lists eight pitfalls to avoid, including keeping an eye on your credit limit, periodically using all your credit cards (only keeping the ones you really need) and staying vigilant about your interest rate when it comes to fixed versus variable-rate cards. In addition to the new changes to credit-card fees, the Federal Reserve Board is considering a new rule that would ban card issuers from charging penalty fees in excess of the amount in question on a consumer’s bill. This would include over-the-limit fees and late-payment fees. Keep an eye on this one as final decision is to be made near the end of August 2010. Check www.federalreserve.gov for updated information. --The risks and costs of borrowing with a reverse mortgage. Aimed at seniors, this article covers the many potential pitfalls of taking out a reverse mortgage. One point the article makes is that not all reverse mortgages have the protection of the government. --Questions to ask when brokers or agents make deposits for you. If you have a brokerage account, a broker there may make a deposit for you or purchase a Certificate of Deposit in your name. The concern is whether the money is going into an account at a financial institution protected by the FDIC. Another concern is about protection of your existing funds. If, for example, your money is put into a bank where you already have funds and that new amount takes your balance over the protected limit, you won’t be completely covered. The reason: The new amount is added to your existing balance. The FDIC consumer newsletter can be accessed online or a paper copy can be mailed directly to you. You can receive e-mail notifications that online issues are available, and news stories can be downloaded to your MP3 player. Archive editions also are available online. Additionally, if you have e-mail, you can opt to receive the “Consumer Tip of the Week,” practical tips to help you stay informed about consumer-finance issues. Check online at www.fdic.gov or call 1-877275-3342 to subscribe. Citizen of the Month The August citizen of the month is Tina Crandell of Rixford. Tina has lived in the area all her life. She has fond memories of growing up in Duke Center where she enjoyed tobogganing on the hill with her family, and holding the banner for the marching band. When Tina was in high school, she won the Betty Crocker award. Tina enjoys the small community with friendly people. Tina drives an ATA bus county wide during the day. Tina was on the school board for 12 years. Tina’s family includes a daughter, Nikole, son in law, Conal, and a grandson named Liam. Tina is quite happy with the way things are in our community, but agrees a community pool would be a benefit. She enjoys going out with her friends in the evenings for dinner, shooting handguns at targets, and hanging out with her family. We caught up with Tina while she was supporting a community event. While we look up to Tina, she looks up to Leo Angevine. Leo keeps pushing forward, trusting God for grace. We thank Tina for all she has done for our school district and community. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • The first Wal-Mart was located in the town of Rogers, Ark. When it opened in 1962, it had a total of 16,000 square feet of space. Today, there are Wal-Mart Supercenters all over the United States, and they measure at least 100,000 square feet and can range up to 220,000 square feet. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

COUCH THEATER -DVD PREVIEWS
By DNA Smith PICK OF THE WEEK “Temple Grandin” (Unrated) -- “Temple Grandin” is one of those little gems of a film that most people haven’t heard of or seen -- but should. Unless you have HBO, you’ve probably never heard of this delightful biopic. Claire Danes stars as Temple Grandin, a woman born in 1947 with classic autism, one of the most severe forms of the affliction. At the time, autism was diagnosed as a type of schizophrenia and mothers were blamed for the child’s condition, often being accused of being too cold and unfeeling toward the child. When Temple is finally properly diagnosed with autism, her mother (Julia Ormond) rejects the doctor’s suggestion to institutionalize the girl and instead devotes her energies to raising Temple to live a normal, fulfilling life. And Temple does just that. She not only attends university, eventually earning a Ph.D, she also becomes the foremost designer of humane slaughterhouses. “Temple Grandin” is a better-than-average biopic, mostly because it treats the subject with gentle humor and respect, and doesn’t fall into the trap of sentimentality or hagiography. Claire Danes’ performance is brilliant, and she definitely deserves an Emmy. If after watching the film, you want to learn more about Temple Grandin, I strongly recommend renting a copy of Errol Morris’ documentary series “First Person.” One of the episodes is devoted to Temple, and she tells her story in her own words as to how her autism gave her a unique insight and empathy toward cows, and how it gave her the ability to design the slaughterhouses so humanely and efficiently. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc by Wilson Casey 1. Is the Book of Ezra in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Daniel 4, who had the vision of a tree growing higher and higher until it could be seen by everyone? Silas, Josiah, Nebuchadnezzar, Solomon 3. Which book could be summarized, “God, why don’t you stop bad things from happening”? Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Malachi 4. What hour mentioned in the Bible means the last possible moment something can be done? 1st, 3rd, 11th, 12th 5. From Judges 6, where did Gideon encounter an angel? Prison, Oak tree, Temple, Well 6. What was Adam’s occupation in Eden? Preacher, Shepherd, Carpenter, Gardener ANSWERS: 1) Old; 2) Nebuchadnezzar; 3) Habakkuk; 4) 11th; 5) Oak tree; 6) Gardener (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky Q: I just finished reading the book “One Day” by David Nicholls and absolutely loved it. Is it being made into a movie? -- Darla E., via e-mail A: I loved the book as well and am happy to report that the movie adaptation is currently filming in England. Anne Hathaway stars as Emma, and Jim Sturgess is Dexter. The film will follow the story of Dex and Em, two university classmates who meet on graduation night in 1988, and fall in and out of each other’s life over the next two decades. In a clever storytelling convention, each chapter lets the reader explore the protagonists’ lives on July 15 of each year, beginning on that fateful day after graduation. *** Q: Dustin Hoffman has always been one of my favorite actors. What does he have coming up? -- Julie F., Denver A: HBO landed the award-winning actor for its new series, “Luck,” which is about the horseracing world: the owners, jockeys and gamblers. Filming begins this fall, and the show co-stars Dennis Farina and Nick Nolte. The pilot episode will be directed by Michael Mann, of “Miami Vice,” “Heat” and “Public Enemies” fame. *** (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Asthmatic Cat Needs Veterinarian’s Opinion DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was wondering what kind of medicine to give a cat that has asthma. My cat “Jack” had an asthma attack last night. Are there any home remedies I can use? -- Cathy S., via e-mail DEAR CATHY: Only your veterinarian can determine the right medicine to give to your cat. It’s very important that you take Jack to the vet for a complete checkup in the next few days. (If he seems distressed or continues to have trouble breathing, take him to vet right away.) Tell the vet the symptoms Jack had during his asthma attack -- any wheezing, distress or odd behavior before the attack, and any weakness or lethargy before, during or after. If he has shown the symptoms before, describe when they occurred and the intensity. Don’t try to diagnose Jack’s problem yourself, and don’t try a home remedy until a proper diagnosis has been made. There are some very important reasons for this. First, cats can “wheeze” due to something as benign as a hairball, or as serious as an undiagnosed heart problem. Only your vet can tell. Second, the type of problem, and its extent, is a big part of determining what medicine to give the cat. Only your vet can do this. This is not to put down home remedies for pets. Many owners swear by homeopathic remedies developed to treat common pet issues like anxiety, and every cat owner knows how most cats react to catnip -- an herb that can be grown on a windowsill. But most acute illnesses need professional medical diagnosis and treatment so Jack can recover quickly and return to a healthy norm. Send your pet questions and tips to [email protected], or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • “If you have to give your child medicine that he or she doesn’t like, let the child eat half of a Popsicle first. Then give him the medicine, and let him have the other half. This is especially helpful during fevers or with vomiting, when you want to stave off dehydration. Ice pops are easier fluids to ingest, and the cold interrupts the bad taste of the medicine.” -- M.L. in Arkansas • “You can buy fancy hide-a-keys for your home that look like rocks, etc., and have a hidden compartment. But you don’t have to go to the expense if all you want is to have a spare emergency key. Put a copy of your house key in a watertight container, such as a small, plastic

Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people. • On Aug. 25, 1939, “The Wizard of Oz,” which will become one of the best-loved movies in history, opens in theaters. Though the scenes in Kansas were shot in traditional black and white, Oz appears in vivid Technicolor, a relatively new film process at the time.

If you submit an application, and do not receive a letter from the School District within three business days, please contact Ms. Mary Jo Kreiner in the Superintendent’s Office at 887-5543. The Child Nutrition Program is open to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or special needs. If you believe that you have been treated unfairly in receiving food services for any of the stated reasons, write immediately to the Secretary of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. 20250. Families are encouraged to apply for free or reduced-price meals. Information and applications are sent home at the beginning of each year regarding qualifications for free and reduced-price lunches. If your financial situation should change during the year, contact Ms. Mary Jo Kreiner in the Superintendent’s Office at 887-5543 for information. Families may apply for these programs at any time during the year. This information is held in strict confidence. Because all students have an account and go through the lunch line in the same way, others in line cannot tell when a student is receiving free or reduced meals. Families that have children attending a public school district can apply for free or reduced price school meals through the National School Lunch Program online using the Internet! This can be done using COMPASS. COMPASS allows Pennsylvanians to apply for social service programs, such as Food Stamps (FS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Energy Assistance, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), etc., online. Families can use COMPASS to apply for free or reduced price school meals only, or they can apply for other services at the same time (FS, TANF, etc.). Since your child attends the Smethport Area School District, which is a public school district, you can apply for free or reduced price school meals online by going to the COMPASS web site at www.compass.state.pa.us or you can continue to use the paper “Household Meal Benefit Application” if you prefer. If you apply for free or reduced price school meals through COMPASS, you do not need to submit a paper application.

Elementary Lunch Policy If an account has a negative balance, no extras or doubles may be purchased. Negative balance reminder slips will be given to the Elementary students to take home every couple of weeks. Any cafeteria charges over $10.00 will result in an Elementary student’s lunch consisting of a white milk and cheese sandwich. The account will continue to be charged. The Elementary homeroom teachers will be notified prior to lunch for students who owe $10.00 or more. They will be given a slip to give to the students letting them know they will receive a cheese sandwich lunch. The students will need to give these slips to the cafeteria server to receive their lunch. All money should be taken to the cafeteria in the morning before 10:00 a.m. Any money brought to the cafeteria will be applied towards the negative balance. No money will be accepted through the lunch lines. No Elementary students may participate in field trips at the end of the year unless the account is paid in full. All accounts must be paid in full at the end of each school year. There are no Ala Carte items in the Elementary Cafeteria except milk; however, a student who purchases lunch may also buy extra menu items. Extra menu items are any single item on the menu or a second lunch. Students are charged for any extras that they choose and must have money in their lunch account to cover these. Students receiving free or reduced meals may also buy extras if there is money available in their account. Any student who receives free lunches and purchases a milk only is charged $0.35. The milk is NOT free when purchased without a lunch. If a student forgets his/her home-packed lunch or money for lunch, he/she may charge a lunch. Charges are discouraged and should be covered with an account deposit as soon as possible. If a parent does not wish their child to buy extras or a double lunch, they may request this in writing to the Food Service Director, who will then put a “block” on the account. Phone calls will NOT be made to parents. However, parents may call the Food Service Director at the school between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. to check on an account balance at 887-5012 ext. 309 or through the MealPay system online at www.mealpay.com or by phone at 1-866-734-4691 (please have student ID# when calling). A reminder to parents or guardians that if your financial status changes throughout the year, you are encouraged to call 887-5543 to request a lunch form be mailed to you. All charges must be paid by the end of the school year. Any money left in accounts at the end of the school year will be available to the student at the beginning of the next school year. Students may bring lunches from home rather than eating a cafeteria-prepared lunch. It is assumed that such a lunch has the parent’s approval. However, it is requested that no soda pop be brought to school to drink at lunch time. Also, students bringing candy, potato chips, corn chips, and so forth should only bring enough for themselves. Many parents do not want their child(ren) to eat such food at lunch time, so we request that students not share any item with their friends. With the Point of Sale system, we encourage parents to send in lunch money for their child’s account in advance. Charges are discouraged. PLAN COOL GAMES TO BEAT THE HEAT Whether you're organizing a family reunion, a birthday party picnic or a barbecue at a neighborhood park, summer heat can affect even the best-planned party. To keep everyone smiling, play "Ice Meltdown." Grab some ice cubes from the freezer or a picnic cooler and give one ice cube to each player. See who can melt his or her ice cube first. The ice must be touching the player's body at all times until it's completely melted. But you can't put it in your mouth! Play "cooperative water balloon volleyball." First, set up a volleyball or badminton net and make some water balloons. To play, toss a water balloon from one side of the net to the player(s) on the other side. The object of the game is to see how many times the water balloon can be thrown over the net without breaking. Or, if you need a little change of pace, play "non-cooperatively" by trying to make the other side miss catching the water balloon. Either way, players are guaranteed to get wet and cool off. Note: Make sure to dispose of all balloon pieces properly. OUTDOOR STORY TIME When young cousins or friends come to visit overnight, enjoy the longer days of sunlight and read favorite children's bedtime stories outside before tucking them all into bed indoors. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • "I love to clip coupons, which I take to the store in a reusable plastic envelope. To remember to use the coupons, when I get to the store, I take out my debit card and put it in the envelope with the coupons. This way, I can't pay without being reminded to whip out those little money-savers!" -Y.L. in South Carolina • If you need to truss a chicken or turkey, just use dental floss. NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton

Former IRL champion Sam Hornish Jr. has had his highs and lows since he started racing in the Sprint Cup in 2008. (John Clark/ NASCAR This Week photo) So, So Close for Sam Briefly, it appeared as if Sam Hornish Jr. might pull the Pennsylvania 500 out of his hat. Or helmet. When all the leaders pitted late in the season's latter Pocono Raceway event, Hornish's Dodge remained on the track. Then it began raining. Had the rain not dissipated, Hornish would have won for the first time at NASCAR's highest level.

It didn't happen. Hornish yielded the lead to Greg Biffle, who ran away from the field in the final laps. Without the benefit of having pitted for fresh tires, Hornish slumped to an 11th-place finish. Hornish's career best was a fourth-place finish at Pocono on Aug. 3, 2009. A native of Defiance, Ohio, Hornish switched full-time to NASCAR in 2008 after winning two Indy Racing League championships and the 2006 Indianapolis 500. The Sprint Cup going has been tough. Hornish finished 35th in the 2008 point standings and was 28th in '09. Through 21 races this year, he ranks 27th. "I feel like some of that is due to me," said Hornish. "I feel like some of that is just the transition from the old car to the new (NASCAR chassis design) and how the team did it. "We've had highs and lows. We go out there and lead laps, go out there and finish fourth. ... I feel like we can do it, it's just how do we

get a little more luck on our side. We have to take our bad days and make them a 20th. Thirty-fifthplace bad days are what kill us." Before the season began, Hornish answered questions about the NASCAR experiment of another prominent IRL driver, Danica Patrick. Speaking from the perspective of someone who knew, Hornish said, "I'm sure she's not going to have any problems dealing with the media. Racing out there on the track is a different thing. Running against 42 other cars ... I wish her well." The Sprint Cup Series represents the big leagues of American racing. "Nobody's going the other way," said Hornish, referring to the IRL. Though his strategy didn't quite work, Hornish had one of his better, if disappointing, days at Pocono. "We've been playing catch-up," he said, "and we want to get to the point where people play catch-up to us."

His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. E-mail Monte at [email protected]. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Aug. 18, 1958, Vladimir Nabokov's controversial novel "Lolita" is published in the U.S. The novel, about a man's obsession with a 12-year-old girl, had been rejected by four publishers before G.P. Putnam's Sons accepted it. • On Aug. 16, 1977, Elvis Presley dies in Memphis, Tenn. He was 42. The death of the "King of Rock and Roll" brought legions of mourning fans to Graceland, his mansion in Memphis. Doctors said he died of a heart attack, likely brought on by his addiction to

prescription barbiturates. • On Aug. 17, 1987, Rudolf Hess, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's former deputy, is found strangled to death in Spandau Prison in Berlin at the age of 93, apparently the victim of suicide. Hess was the last surviving member of Hitler's inner circle and the sole prisoner at Spandau since 1966. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was librarian and essayist Frederick Saunders who made the following sage observation: "Pride, like laudanum and other poisonous medicines, is beneficial in small, though injurious in large, quantities. No man who is not pleased with himself, even in a personal sense, can please others." (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • Earthquakes occur at a rate of roughly one every minute around the world. About eight of those every year are considered to be major, registering above 7.0 on the Richter Scale. • If you're a sailor you're probably familiar with the hazards of being out on the water: high seas, storms, hidden reefs. You probably wouldn't count whales among the dangers, but you'd be wrong. It seems that on a recent day sail out of Table Bay Harbor in South Africa, a couple on a 30-foot sailboat were whale-watching when one got too close for comfort. A 40-ton whale they had been viewing breached right next to the boat and landed on the deck, breaking off the mast and then thrashing around before sliding back into the water. The whale lost some skin and blubber, but was otherwise unharmed; the couple were lucky to still have a seaworthy craft and made it safely back to the harbor. • Statistics show that the average 5year-old boy today weighs about 10 percent more and the average 5year-old girl about 8 percent more than children of the same age in the 1980s. • Those who study such things say that the word "daisy" started out as "day's eye" and was shortened over the years. Similarly, "God be with you" became "goodbye" and "whole be thou" became "hello." *** Thought for the Day: "To avoid situations in which you might make mistakes may be the biggest mistake of all." -- Peter McWilliams NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • "Get a wonderful shine to your hair by rinsing it with cool water and vinegar. NEWS FROM AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION IN NEW YORK Lung Association Funds & Promotes Lung Disease Research Application Deadline for Nationwide Award & Grant Program is October 21 Albany, NY (08/04/2010)(readMedia)-- The American Lung Association in New York announced that application materials for the American Lung Association’s Nationwide Awards and Grants Research Program are available online at Proposal Central and can be accessed at https://proposalcentral.altum.com The goal of the Awards and Grants Program is to stimulate cutting edge research that will reduce the burden of lung diseases, including asthma, COPD and lung cancer, on patients and their families. “Our mission at the American Lung Association in New York is to save lives by preventing lung disease and improving lung health,” said Scott T. Santarella, President and CEO of the American Lung Association in New York. “Funding research focused on lung disease through our Nationwide Awards and Grants Program is absolutely vital to fulfilling our important mission. These awards help ensure that lung disease research is intensified so that we can not only alleviate the pain of those who suffer from lung disease, but find better treatments and cures.” Santarella explained that the majority of the awards granted by the Lung Association support trainees and/or junior investigators early in their careers. This helps ensure longterm commitments to lung disease research and helps to maintain an adequate supply of scientists dedicated specifically to lung disease. For more information on the 2011-2012 award and grant program offerings, or to learn more about the Lung Association’s Research Program, visit www.lungusa.org/ finding-cures/. The application deadline is October 21, 2010. f

NO PRESSING NEEDED Sometimes all my clothes don’t dry at the same time in the clothes dryer. Rather than run the cycle longer, I simply lay the damp items on the dryer while I run the next load. They usually dry completely by the time that cycle is done. I also use an indoor clothes rack for all intimate apparel and everything with spandex in it. They last much longer dried without heat. To help them dry faster, you can run a small room fan, but I simply dry them in my home office where the fan is on anyway. Often with a little “finger” pressing, no ironing is needed. -Barbara in Wallingford, CT

PRESCRIPTION DRUG ADDICTION TREATMENT NEEDED MORE THAN EVER The most recent wave of drug addiction happens to be those drugs prescribed by physicians. There are several reasons for this. The availability of prescription drugs and the direct advertising to consumers plays a role. The phrase “buyer beware” is of the utmost importance when one is talking drugs, no matter the condition they are taken for. Prescription drug addiction treatment has been more and more needed as more and more consumers are taking increasing numbers of drugs. The Narconon program is a successful drug treatment program for prescription drugs and as such they have seen an increasing number of prescription drug addicts coming to them for help. A survey done by the National Institute on drug abuse reports that 48 million people-about 20 percent of the U.S. population-aged 12 or older had used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons in their lifetimes. When one considers these numbers it is no mystery why so many Americans are showing up in drug rehab hooked on their doctors prescriptions or those obtained off the street. Pain is the usual reason one begins taking prescription painkillers. However, unless the underlying reason for the pain is addressed either structurally, as in setting a bone, or nutritionally or pathologically, the patient continues to suffer long-term and more and more relies on prescription pain killers to ease the pain. The unfortunate part is that as one continue to take pain killers, they cease to deaden the pain as they initially did, requiring the user to use larger and larger doses. The result can be addiction. The Narconon program addresses prescription addiction by first having the person medically examined to locate any underlying deficiencies or illnesses. The person is then helped with nutritional supplements that aid withdrawal and gentle physical techniques that assist withdrawal. The program’s next step is removing the drug residues from the person’s body with a safe sauna program that is nutritionally balanced and has been proven to do just that. The personal issues the person was having that led to his addiction are then addressed so that he can become more able in life and have the knowledge he needs to handle life’s problems and not have to resort to drug use as a solution. Underlying stress is often a cause of many physical ailments that may have led to the need for pain pills to begin with. By doing the full Narconon program, the person is able to come off of drugs and live a happy drug-free life. If you know of someone struggling with prescription drug addiction or would like to find out more about the Narconon program contact Narconon today at 877-237-3307. fb

Never lived in. $15,000. 814-5982885. No land contract. tfc NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • Weatherproofing in the winter makes good sense -- nobody likes the feel of a chilly draft. But weatherproofing is just as important during the summer if you use air conditioning. You might not feel that cold air leaking outside, but your power bill sure does. • Whip your butter to stretch it out. Soften sticks to room temperature and whip it to twice its volume using an electric mixer. Store in a large, sealable plastic container. • "The secret to extra-light pancakes and waffle batter is carbonated water. Use club soda in place of regular water and you'll see a big difference." -- M.F. in Tennessee • "To use the last bits of shampoo and conditioner in my bottles, I add a little water and shake them. I also cut open the bottle of lotion when it has a pump top. There's always so much left when the bottle won't pump any more out." -- A.R. in Oregon (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

They concluded that if current trends continue, 86 percent of adults in this country will be obese by 2030. ***

Copyright 2010 Dollar Stretcher, Inc. -E. in PA BEFORE YOUR GARAGE SALE I have a suggestion for making the most out of your yard sale. When you go through your stuff, set aside good items that you know will bring in high dollar. Advertise those items on Craiglist first. I have sold many things that way. At a yard sale, they would have only brought in $5 to $10, but I got $25 to $30 for them on Craigslist. Also, advertise your yard sale on Craigslist. It is free, and you can list a lot more items. -D.P.
