Guide permits cost $25 for residents and $50 for nonresidents. Based on updated regulations, anyone convicted of a violation of the Game and Wildlife Code or Game Commission regulations within the last 10 years is ineligible to obtain a guide permit. Applicants who have been convicted of a violation of the Game and Wildlife Code or Game Commission regulations within the last 10 years will be rejected. Guides may provide assistance in locating or tracking elk, and calling for elk, but they may not harvest an elk. Permit applications may be obtained from the Game Commission’s Harrisburg headquarters by calling 717-783-8164, or by contacting any of the Game Commission’s six region offices. The Board of Game Commissioners created the elk guide permit to allow experienced individuals, especially those who are familiar with or live in the elk range, to serve as guides for those who receive an elk license. Guides are not required for those who only plan to accompany an elk license recipient, or those who plan to aid a successful elk hunter to remove an elk from the field.

As it turns out, this isn't true. Drains are so small that the Coriolis effect has no measurable influence at all. It's the shape of the sink and whether or not it's level that determines the direction of the drainage.
COLLECTING: By Larry Cox: Postage Stamps Q: Two years ago, my husband purchased a Lena Liu Butterfly mobile in the Fancyful Flights series. It was manufactured by Bradford and came in sets. I received the first four sets, but the series was retired before I was able to complete it. Where might I find the final set? -- Monika, Southbury, Conn. A: Your best bet would be to check eBay. I contacted several dealers who specialize in Lena Liu items, but none had the butterfly mobile. You aren't the first person to contact me about the Bradford Exchange and issues the company has discontinued and which are no longer available.

COLLECTING: By Larry Cox: Postage Stamps Q: I have been trying to find someone who knows the value of older postage stamps. I do not want to leave this collection at someone's house or business. I would not want to be cheated out of any money that would be due to me. How expensive would it be to insure this collection? -Susan, Port Orange, Fla. A: Let me begin my answer by stating that most established stamp dealers are not dishonest crooks. In fact, many will gladly provide you with references. If you're still hesitant to deal with an expert in the field, your next move is to purchase a good price guide. Two I think are superb and basic are The Official Stamp Collector's Bible by Stephen R. Datz (House of Collectibles, $22), and The Blackbook Price Guide to United States Postage Stamps by Marc Hudgeons and Tom Hudgeons (House of Collectibles, $7.99). To insure your collection, you need to consult with the insurance agent who insures your home. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • "I store my sleeping bags in the garage with my tent. The tent is in a bag to keep all the pieces together, but the sleeping bags are just rolled up and secured. To keep them dust-free, I store them in pillowcases, which allow the material to breathe so it won't get musty, but it keeps them clean and ready to use." -- C.A. in Florida • Use the plastic lids from large coffee cans underneath bottles of cooking oil or syrup in kitchen cabinets. This way, anything that drips down the side goes on the lid, not on the cabinet. • Too much soap in the washer? Sprinkle suds with salt to disperse, and then rewash. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • If you live in an area where it is humid and your outdoor light bulbs are susceptible to rusting, give the bulb threads a light coat of petroleum jelly before screwing the bulb in. It will keep the metal from rusting and will make it easier to remove the bulb when the time comes to change it. Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Most Back Pain Stops on Its Own DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 78year-old, semiretired man. I am very active and look a lot younger. I work part-time as a truck driver delivering auto parts to garages. Now I am out of work because of pain in my lower back. The pain runs down to my foot. I have been diagnosed with sciatica. My doctor sent me for an MRI, and it showed a bulging disk. What is the best remedy? I use ice packs, heating packs and hot packs. I am on crutches to take pressure off my leg. Would surgery help? -- J.S. ANSWER: Back pain is one of the leading problems that send people to doctors. Most cases of back pain go away on their own, even if they’re due to things like a bulging (also called herniated or ruptured) disk. Even though your back hurts, you can be as active as your pain allows. Don’t sit for prolonged periods; sitting puts more pressure on your back than does standing or walking. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. Continue with heat, cold or alternating heat and cold, whichever gives you the most pain relief. Tylenol or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.) can make you more comfortable. If the pain doesn’t let up in six weeks, you have chronic back pain. Sciatica is pain that travels from the back down the leg to the foot. It comes from pressure on the sciatic nerve. In your case, the pressure most likely comes from your bulging back disk. Back disks are cartilage pads placed between adjacent backbones to absorb the shock those bones take from our walking, bending and pushing. The disk has a tough outer ring. Gelatinous material makes up the inner core. If there’s a break in the outer ring, the inner core pushes through -- a bulging, herniated or ruptured disk, whichever term you want to use. If sciatica doesn’t resolve on its own, a doctor can inject the back with cortisone to reduce inflammation. That can relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. The procedure is called an epidural. Surgeons, aided by a microscope, can remove the bulge through small incisions, about an inch long. This technique is called a microdiskectomy and usually is quite successful. The booklet on back problems covers this topic in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2010 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

“Rat: A Novel” By Fernanda Eberstadt (Alfred A. Knopf, $25.95) Reviewed by Katy B. Olson In an enchanting but deserted farm collective in southern France’s Pyrénées-Orientales, 15-year old Celia Bonnet grows up exploring and finding trouble alongside her fiercely beautiful, hot-blooded mother. Celia -or Rat, as she prefers to be called -whiles away her days getting into scrapes with the local boys, cutting school and dreaming of her absent English father, the son of a glamorous model and celebrity, whom she has never met. But when Rat comes upon her mother’s latest boyfriend abusing her adopted brother Morgan, she is forced to leave her own childhood behind in order to save 9-year-old Morgan’s. Along the way, the unlikely young pair winds up on a mission to discover the missing part of Rat’s murky past in acclaimed author Fernanda Eberstadt’s latest novel. Rat and Morgan hustle their way across the south of France -encountering all sorts of wanderers, from politically active twentysomethings to middle-aged English vacationers, and scrounging food where they can -- on their journey toward the safety that Rat’s father’s London home promises. Author Eberstadt’s prose is gorgeously constructed, simple but effective; her description of the countryside is fluent and effortless. And her heroine, Rat -- and all of Rat’s fears and hopes -- radiates the universal promise and shadow the accompanying fear of adventurous 15-year-olds (and those who are 15 at heart!) everywhere. A memorable novel and a rare fitting read for teens and their parents alike, Rat is a romantic adventure, a beautifully European escapade told in sparse, gorgeous style. CLEANWAYS PLANS FALL RECYCLING EVENTS PA CleanWays of McKean County is planning three fall clean up events. The group will sponsor an unwanted medication collection event on September 25th, a tire recycling event on October 2nd, and an electronic recycling event on November 6th. Each of these events requires the community’s involvement to be successful. On Saturday, September 25th, the Drug Enforcement Agency is holding a “National Drug Take Back Program”. PA CleanWays, the McKean County Sheriff ’s Office, Penn State Extension, and the Conservation District have registered the Penn State Extension Office in Smethport as the official McKean County site for this event. Area residents can bring their unwanted medications from 10am to 2pm to the Extension Office on Route 6 just west of Smethport for proper disposal. It is important to note this collection is just designed for disposal of pills. No liquids, sharps, creams, or patches, etc. will be accepted. The Sheriffs office will be on site with a disposal box. Residents will enter, open their own pill bottles and empty them into the box. Participants will take their own containers away and no pre-registration for this event is required. The participating organizations want people to know not to flush unwanted medications down the drain or toilet. These substances are showing up in small amounts in our water resources. In addition, prescription medicines are increasingly being illegally used by young people. This is a chance to benefit young people and the environment by properly disposing of unwanted prescription pills. On Saturday, October 2nd, PA CleanWays will once again hold a tire recycling event. The event will be held from 8am to Noon at the McKean County Fairgrounds in East Smethport, PA. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required by calling the Penn State Extension Office in Smethport. Car tires will be accepted for 0.75 per tire and truck tires for $2.00 per tire. The rims can be on or off. These are the same prices as last year. Each person can register up to 12 tires. Township Officials, who would like to dispose of tires at the event, need to provide a copy of their liability insurance policy and also the number of residents who contributed to the number of tires they are registering. The PA Department of Environmental Protection Household Hazardous Waste Program provides a grant to help fund this event. Mosquitoes known to carry “West Nile Virus” can breed in discarded tires and this is a great opportunity for people to properly dispose of unwanted tires and make our communities safer. Finally, PA CleanWays is planning an electronic recycling event in the Bradford area for Saturday, November 6th, 2010. This event will be held from 10am to 2pm. They are working with a company called JVS Environment and are currently looking for a site to host this event in the Bradford area. The company charges $5.00 per computer monitor and $1.00 per diagonal inch of TV. So a 20 inch TV would cost $20.00. All other electronics would be accepted free of charge.

In order to determine truck space needed, the group is asking businesses to pre-register at the Penn State Extension Office with a rough estimate of material. Individual residents would not need to pre-register. Again, each of these recycling events requires the community to get involved to be successful. If there are questions about the events you can contact Extension Educator, Jim Clark at the Penn State Extension Office or Heather McKean at the McKean County Conservation District, both offices are located in Smethport. Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce. f STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was existential psychologist Rollo May who made the following sage observation: "It is an ironic habit of human beings to run faster when we have lost our way." • Two countries are tied for the nation encompassing the most time zones. It's no surprise that Russia is one of them, but it seems odd that the other would be France. It's true, though; once you take a look at a map of French territories around the world, you'll see. There are French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean, the island of Reunion off the east coast of Africa, various holdings in the Caribbean, and New Caledonia off the east coast of Australia, among others. • If you had to choose, would you rather be bitten by a skunk or sprayed by one? The creatures can't do both things at once. • Yes, there's a word for it: The plastic tips you find on shoelaces are known as aglets. • If you're a professional flute player, it's likely that your instrument is made from sterling silver, 14-carat gold or platinum. • A snail's teeth are located in rows along its tongue (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

SAVE $60 ON LUNCH THIS MONTH I work with 20 others in our unit at the local hospital. Typically a lunch costs an employee about $5 to $6. Multiply that times 20 and each day our unit spends $100 to $120! And each person spends $100 to $120 per month! We established a schedule of lunch “ladies.” We each take turns at providing a lunch, inclusive of bottled waters. I now spend about $40 on my assigned lunch day (to feed 20 people) and I receive a month’s worth of lunches in return, saving at least $60 each month! It’s worked out really great! -O.

WAREHOUSE PRICING
We did the homework for you, and can’t wait to see you here at Paul Brown’s! Quite simply, warehouse pricing saves you time and money. Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Brown’s! With the power of the internet, today’s car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize what’s a good deal and what’s not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot, we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, that’s where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value. We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelly Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelly Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Don’t wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days.

GAME COMMISSION TO HOLD DRAWING FOR ELK LICENSES HARRISBURG-Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe said the agency’s public drawing for the 2010 elk hunting licenses will be webcast beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. To view the drawing, a “Live Elk Drawing” icon will be posted on the agency’s website (http:// www.pgc.state.pa.us) for individuals to click on and watch the drawing. In order to watch the live feed, you will need to have Flash Player installed on your computer. If you do not
have Flash Player installed on your computer, please go to this link: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Once Flash Player has been installed, you will be able to properly view the live feed of the drawing. “Each year, tens of thousands of individuals apply for an elk license,” Roe said. “Unfortunately, not all of them can make it to the public drawings. And, due to financial limitations, we are only able to send notification letters to those who were selected to receive an elk license. By webcasting the public drawings, we hope to allow more people to view this drawing without having to travel to the agency’s Harrisburg headquarters.” Beginning at 10 a.m., the agency will conduct the public drawing to award 50 elk licenses. Roe also noted that those who have submitted applications can check to see if they were selected, by Sept. 17, thanks to the new Pennsylvania Automated License System (PALS). Presently, the status for all individual’s applications for elk licenses is listed as “Pending.” Once the database is updated, which is expected by Sept. 17, those who were selected for an elk license will see the status changed to “Awarded,” as well as the designation of the Elk Hunt Zone and whether they were awarded an antlered or antlerless elk license. Those not selected will see the status changed to “Unsuccessful.” To access the information, go to the Game Commission website (http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/ ), and click on the blue box in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage. Click on the “Purchase License Permit and or Application/Replace License and or Permit” option, which includes the ability to “Check on the status of any Lottery Application,” scroll down and click on the “Start Here” button at the bottom of the page. At this page, choose one of the identification options below to check your records, fill in the necessary information and click on the “Continue” button. Click on the appropriate residency status, which will display your current personal information. At the bottom of the page, choose the “Check on the status of any Lottery Application” button, and then hit “Continue.”
“While this may seem like a lot of clicking and box checking to get to the information, the system is designed to protect an individual’s personal information, while at the same time enabling that person to check on the status of his or her applications, as well as their antlerless deer license applications,” Roe said. “Prior to PALS, the only way to know for sure that you were awarded an elk license was to attend the public drawings, wait for a letter in the mail or to call the Game Commission. “This year, thanks to PALS, we will be able to update the data files for each license buyer shortly after the elk public drawing is completed so that license buyers will be able to see for themselves if they were drawn for one of the 50 licenses.”

JILL JACKSON'S HOLLYWOOD By Jill Jackson HOLLYWOOD ... Lets have a look at some of your favorite stars: Julie Andrews was born in England in 1935. She only attended high school, no college. Her stage debut was in a play titled "Starlight Roof" in 1947. Her film debut was in "Mary Poppins" in 1964. At age 8, she had a fully formed adult throat and a four-octave voice. "The Sound of Music," in which she played Maria, was the highest grossing film of its day, and today it is still pulling in the big numbers whenever it is rerun. For those of you who have never seen this magic, find it and enjoy. ... And here is something you might not know: Andrews and her husband Blake Edwards adopted two Vietnamese girls during the Vietnam War. This multi-talented lady also has written two children's books, "Mandy" and "The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles." AND I betcha didn't know that she tried to shed her Mary Poppins image by baring her breasts in "S.O.B." in 1981. She won the Oscar for "Mary Poppins," so that was a hard image to shake. Sandra Bullock was born in Arlington, Va., in 1964. Her mother was a European opera singer, so as a child Sandra was shuttled back and forth between Austria, Germany and the U.S. In high school, she was a cheerleader and was voted "the person most likely to brighten your day." She attended East Carolina University and the Neighborhood Playhouse. ... Did you know her role in "While You Were Sleeping" was originally meant for Demi Moore? But Demi's salary demands were too high, and the role went to Sandra.
No tax on footwear & clothing
... Sandra can chalk up some interesting activities in her life. She spent time in a rehabilitation clinic to prepare for her role in "28 Days." She also took a job as a waitress to pay the bills till her career took off. (Many young actresses and actors are doing the same.) George Clooney was born in 1961 in Lexington, Ky. He attended Northern Kentucky University. Can you believe one of his original jobs was cutting tobacco? He also sold insurance door to door. His father is a former newscaster, and his aunt was famous singer Rosemary Clooney. As you know, he got his big break as an intern on the TV show "ER." "Gorgeous" has had one marriage, many relationships and a potbellied pig named Max (who sadly passed away several years ago). BIZARRE THINGS STARS HAVE DONE: Emilio Estevez has seen "Jaws" more than 70 times. ... Warren Beatty has memorized the complete works of Eugene O'Neill. ... Madonna once dyed her hair a different color every day of the week. ... Larry Hagman has spent several Independence Days parading along the beach in a gorilla suit banging a drum. ... Anthony Quinn ran backward for half a mile every day. ... Robert Redford has booked whole rows of seats on a plane so he doesn't have to speak to fellow passengers. *** BITS & PIECES: Phyllis Diller once said, "My photographs don't do me justice. They look just like me." ... And would you believe a casting director once told Cary Grant that his neck was too thick and he was bowlegged. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

COLLECTING By Larry Cox Q: I have a collection of old baseball cards of major-league players from 1944 through 1958. Do they have any value? -- Albert, Dillwyn, Va. A: There are several excellent price guides for baseball cards. One of the better ones is The Standard Catalogue of Baseball Cards edited by Don Fluckinger, which features information about 15,000 sets and more than 1 million card values. What movie(s) are you most looking forward to? Go to www.celebrityextraonline.com/p/ fall-movies.html and let your voice be heard! *** Q: Who are the celebrities on this season of "Dancing With the Stars," and who do you predict will walk away with the mirror ball trophy? -- Edna J., West Palm Beach, Fla. A: As usual, the lineup of competing celebrities is quite diverse this year. We have: singer/ songwriter Michael Bolton, R&B singer/actress Brandy, comedian Margaret Cho, ex-Laker Rick Fox, actress Jennifer Grey, actor/singer David Hasselhoff, actress Florence Henderson, Kyle Massey of Disney Channel's "Cory in the House," former first daughter of Alaska Bristol Palin, "The Hills" star Audrina Partridge, reality-show star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and ex-quarterback Kurt Warner. Given that Jennifer Grey had an excellent dance teacher back in 1987 (the late Patrick Swayze for "Dirty Dancing"), she might have a leg up on the competition. Of the men, my money is on "The Hoff." *** Q: Has "Happy Town" been canceled on ABC? I got hooked on it with the first episode, but it has been replaced with "Castle" in the same time slot. -- Josie H., via email A: Citing the ever-popular reason of poor ratings, ABC canceled "Happy Town" at the beginning of the summer, despite a stellar cast that included Steven Webber and Sam Neill. ABC didn't even let it stick around long enough to air all eight episodes on TV; the final two episodes can be watched online at ABC.com. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

David Hasselhoff Q: I'm a big fan of "Ice Road Truckers" on the History Channel. I am especially fascinated by Lisa, the young female driver who manages to keep up with the "big guys" and do her job as well as any of them. What can you tell me about this gal? -- Bernard B., Palm Springs, Calif. A: Lisa Kelly, 29, is in her second year of traveling on the dangerous, icy roads of "Ice Road Truckers." The former motocross champion and pizza-delivery driver certainly can hold her own within this "good-ole-boy" occupation, but she does have to constantly prove herself to her peers. The selfproclaimed tomboy was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., and attended one semester of college at Cornerstone University until circumstances led her to driving the big rigs. She has been married to husband Traves since September 2008. *** Q: I am so excited for the fall movie season to begin, as I am getting a little tired of all these high-action, shoot-'em-up summer blockbusters. Which fall movies are you most looking forward to? - Renee G., via e-mail A: Without a doubt, No. 1 on my list is "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 1," which opens Nov. 19. I'm also looking forward to "Nowhere Boy" (Oct. 8), "RED" (Oct. 15), "The

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: As you can see from my address, I live in the Deep South. I coach highschool football as well as teach two history classes. I worry about heatstroke in my players because of the high temperatures here. Any suggestions on preventing this? -L.P. ANSWER: Your concern is justified. Between 1995 and 2007, 25 high-school students and five college students died from heatstroke while practicing football. These fatalities occurred in the first week of practice. It takes a good two weeks for people to acclimatize to heat. My best advice is to consult these Web sites for definitive tips: www.nata.org (NATA is the National Athletic Trainers Association) and www.acsm.org (the American College of Sports Medicine). I'm positive your school has a computer.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Heart Failure Patients Need Activity, Not Rest DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I carry the diagnosis of congestive heart failure. Medicines have made me feel pretty good. My wife thinks that I should do nothing. If I do much more than sit, she is all over

me. A little bit of activity isn't dangerous, is it? If I don't do something, I am going to turn into a blob of fat. -- R.K. ANSWER: You're in a boat with 5 million other Americans who have chronic heart failure. Heart failure means the heart doesn't pump enough blood with each beat to supply the body with

oxygen. Shortness of breath on slight exertion is a principal sign. Rest used to be the rule for heartfailure patients. Too much rest, however, deconditions the body and makes it even more difficult for a heart-failure patient to do things that are part of everyday life, like walking and a few household chores. You have to ask your doctor what limits you should be bound by. If there's a supervised exercise program for heart-failure patients in your area, join it. Many hospitals sponsor such programs. I encourage you to become active. You'll find that regular exercise permits you to do more than you believed you could do. Congestive heart failure -- a common consequence of heart disease -- is discussed at length in the pamphlet on that topic. ***

Many other thyroid problems exist, so I can't say this with absolute assurance. It depends on her thyroid condition and what kind of medicine she's taking. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. WELLSVILLE, NY, SEPTEMBER 2010-THE AUTOMOTIVE TRADES Department of Alfred State College (Wellsville Campus), in conjunction with Tenneco, is sponsoring a “Drive and Ride” event on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wellsville Campus. This event is open to the public free of charge. An obstacle course will be set up in the front area of the campus and Tenneco will sponsor a session of interactive automotive technology demonstrations and drive experiences, including a fleet of identical vehicles running on a customdesigned temporary road course. The Drive and Ride activity offers participants the chance to drive two cars, comparable in every way but one: one car will have its original shocks and one car will be equipped with Monroe premium shocks. Drivers will evaluate their performance on a road course constructed on campus to test driving skills-look out for those speed bumps, pedestrians, and wildlife! There will also be prizes available, including certificates to the campus bookstore. All students will receive information in their mailboxes and arrangements will be made for commuters to join in the fun too. It’s great fun and a chance to win prizes. Feel free to join the Wellsville Campus in this great event. Faculty, staff, students (from both campuses) and individuals from the community are welcome to join the fun! The Automotive Trades Department hopes to see everyone on Sept. 20! Information sessions/clinics are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Auto Trades Department at (607) 587-3117.

The amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, were influenced by the English Bill of Rights of 1689. • On Sept. 23, 1846, at the Berlin Observatory, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovers the planet Neptune. The blue gas giant, which has a diameter four times that of Earth, was named for the Roman god of the sea. It completes an orbit of the Sun once every 165 years. • On Sept. 21, 1938, without warning, a powerful Category 3 hurricane slams into Long Island and southern New England. All told, 700 people were killed by the hurricane, nearly 9,000 homes and buildings were destroyed and nearly 3,000 ships were sunk or wrecked. • On Sept. 26, 1945, Lt. Col. Peter Dewey, a U.S. Army officer with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in Vietnam, is shot and killed in Saigon. Dewey was the head of a seven-man team sent to Vietnam to search for missing American pilots. He was the first of nearly 59,000 Americans killed in Vietnam. • On Sept. 22, 1953, the first four-level (or "stack") interchange in the world opens in Los Angeles, at the intersection of the Harbor, Hollywood, Pasadena and Santa Ana freeways. It consisted of 32 lanes of traffic weaving in eight directions at once. Today, the interchange's cost of $5.5 million would pay for just 250 feet of urban freeway. • On Sept. 24, 1969, the trial of the "Chicago Seven" begins. At the height of the antiwar and civil-rights movements, young leftists had organized protest marches at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and were thus accused of conspiring to incite a riot. In 1970, the convictions and contempt charges were overturned on appeal. • On Sept. 20, 1973, Billie Jean King defeats Bobby Riggs, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, in a widely publicized exhibition tennis match dubbed the "Battle of the Sexes." The match was set up after the 55-year-old Riggs routed Australian star Margaret Court four months' earlier on Mother's Day. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton what the problem was," said Vickers, "but we were able to fix it. ... I'm going to be back in the No. 83 and very excited to be back with Red Bull." Vickers, who has mostly stayed away from the track, has spent off time traveling and working out. "My main priority is getting back to racing next year," he said. "I've been given a gift. Things happen for a reason. I've had some time to think back and look at my career, both personally and professionally. I don't think I'll change a lot when I come back, but I do think I will change some. I'm probably going to tolerate a lot less, but at the same time there will be areas I will tolerate a lot more -just depends on what it is. I have a new appreciation for life. I'm looking forward to it. I feel great and can't wait to race." Vickers, from Thomasville, N.C., expects to be off blood thinners by January, at which point he will get back in a race car and begin testing to prepare for the 2011 season. "What I love to do is race," he said. "It is not only my job, but my passion. I've been missing that need for speed, the competition, my people and friends in the industry, but at the same time, it has been nice to take a break." *** Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. E-mail Monte at

Brian Vickers, center, fell ill in May and had to cut his season short. Now, the driver plans to be back in 2011 after heart surgery. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) Vickers Sets Return After Heart Surgery Brian Vickers, who made the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2009, competed in only 11 races this season. After a 10th-place finish at Darlington Raceway on May 8, he fell ill. Doctors discovered that Vickers, 26, had developed blood clots in his left leg, left finger and lungs. A regimen of blood thinners made it impossible for him to compete in his No. 83 Team Red Bull Toyota. Recently, Vickers underwent successful surgery to repair a small hole between the two atriums of his heart. He also was diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome, in which blood flow is restricted because a vein and/or artery are pinched. After surgery, a stent was placed in a vein on July 13 to open it. Now, however, Vickers expects to return to full-time competition next year. "Not only did we figure out

Easy Cinnamon Rolls (Sticky Buns) 1/2 stick margarine or butter, melted 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup nuts, chopped 1 tablespoon water 1/2 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon (to 1 1/2 teaspoons) cinnamon 2 cans (11-ounce) refrigerated regular or buttermilk biscuits 1. Take 2 tablespoons melted butter with the brown sugar, nuts and water and place in the bottom of 10-inch Bundt pan. 2. Mix white sugar and cinnamon together. Dip each biscuit lightly in rest of melted butter, then into sugar and cinnamon mixture. 3. Place each biscuit on end in Bundt pan; pinch tips or sides of biscuits slightly together (this helps prevent ring from falling apart when served). Bake at 400 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes. After baking, turn biscuit ring out onto plate. Serve immediately. (Or cool the rolls to serve later. Reheat to serve if you like.) Stuffed Peanut Butter French Toast 2 large eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup peanut butter 8 slices white bread 1 banana, sliced diagonally 1 tablespoon margarine or butter 1. In pie plate, with fork, beat eggs and milk. Spread peanut butter on the eight slices of bread. Top 4 slices of bread with banana slices. Top with remaining pieces of bread, to make 4 sandwiches. 2. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, melt butter on medium. Dip sandwiches in egg mixture to coat. Add sandwiches to skillet and cook for 6 minutes, or until golden on both sides. Drizzle with maple syrup. NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson • Get the extra lotion out of the bottom of a pump bottle by setting the bottle in hot water and pouring it into a small bowl. Dip your fingers in and apply. • “To get the dust off of a bunch of silk or artificial flowers, try placing them in a medium-size paper bag to which you add a quarter cup of salt. Close up the bag, then shake vigorously. The salt will attack the dust!” -- I.K. in Montana
• Try covering windows with thicker, denser material for curtains in the summer. It can block the sunlight from coming in and heating up your home. In the winter, do the reverse and have a nice set of sheers that will let the warming sunlight in.

In January of 1969, Mrs. Emily L. Cooke, Executive Director of the Mc-Cam-Po Area Girl Scout Council, Inc., sent to the Moneysaver these photos of then Senior Girl Scouts from our area. Following are segments from the accompanying article. The summer of 1969 offers a variety of wider opportunities, and one automatic benefit of all of them is meeting girls from every area of the country and every sort of background. Among the events and the girls going to from Mc-Cam-Po Council are the following: Cathryn Rosen, Bradford, and Linda McKnight, Bradford, going to “La Asamblea De San Diego”, San Diego, California. This assembly will offer exploration of the culture and heritage of the first settlement in California on its 200th anniverary. Karen Ray, Bradford, is going to “Creative Arts Conference” at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. This conference takes advantage of that city’s abundant cultural opportunities.
Patricia Lindstrom, Bradford, will be going to a conference entitled “The World of People--Let’s Talk” in Akron, Ohio. This will focus on human resources and human relations in today’s world. Susan Eisenman, Bradford, will be going to a “Wilderness Encampment” in the Monogahela National Forest, near Elkings, West Virginia. (The Bradford Girl Scouts are in Senior Troop #21; Miss Naomi Carlson is their Senior Adviser.) Teresa Nash, Olean, has been selected as First Alternate to go to a conference on Marine Biology which will take place on Catalina Island off the shore of Southern California, and will feature trips to laboratories and museums, plus study at the University of California School of Oceanography. (Teresa is in Senior Troop #14, Olean; Miss Helen Cutler is her Senior Adviser.)
