SENIOR NEWS LINE: by Matilda Charles Should You Consult a Nutritionist? Have you ever consulted a nutritionist about your diet? It might not be a bad idea. I recently had an appointment with a nutritionist, and boy, did I learn a lot. As we age, many of us experience changes in smell and taste, tend to eat to kill hunger rather than for health and lose interest in food in general. Many of us don't get enough protein because we're stuck with the belief that it requires a big portion of meat. Not so. One of the most potent protein sources is a combination of beans and rice. And then there's the matter of food density. As we age, our appetites and capacity aren't what they used to be. If we fill up on food that has less nutritional value, we're robbing our bodies of what we need for health. Portion sizes can be confusing. They're smaller than you'd think. In many cases, a half-cup constitutes a portion. If weight control is a problem, overestimating the size of a portion can add to the difficulty of controlling those pounds. Fruit is our friend, although many of us get away from it as we age. And it apparently doesn't matter how we get the fruit -- fresh, frozen, dried, canned or pureed like applesauce -- because the nutrients are still present. Variety in foods, said the nutritionist, is one of the best ways of staying healthy. A consultation with a nutritionist might be ones of the best things you can do for your health. He or she will be able to assess your age, activity level, diet limitations and weight and come up with a food plan to keep you in top shape. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Seventeen percent of all the restaurants in the country are pizzerias. If you’re like 93 percent of Americans, you eat at least one pizza every month. Pepperoni is the most popular topping, followed by sausage, mushrooms, onions and olives. And a Gallup poll found that kids between the ages of 3 and 11 would choose pizza over any other food for lunch or dinner. • A newly married couple sued the upscale resort in Chile where they spent their honeymoon when a swim in the pool turned the bride’s waistlength blond hair green. • The oldest known skis were found, perhaps unsurprisingly, in Scandinavia. The experts say the skis were made about 4,000 years ago. • If you live in the state of Minnesota, you might want to keep in mind that it’s against the law to sleep with no clothes on. Thought for the Day: “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” -- Oscar Wilde (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

ALLEGANY COUNTY FALL CAREGIVER EDUCATIONAL SERIES ANNOUNCED Navigating Life Transitions Join the Allegany County Caregiver Coalition, Allegany County Office for the Aging, and Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network for this fall’s Caregiver Educational Series, Wednesday Evenings beginning September 29, 2010, from 5:30-7:30p.m., located at the Whitney Cafe, Belmont, New York. The six-week series is free and includes dinner, guest speakers and program materials to help family caregivers in their role of caring for a loved-one. “Are you providing unpaid assistance to a spouse, relative, or friend who is ill, disabled, or needs help with basic activities of daily living? If so, whether or not you live with the person you are helping, you are a caregiver, and this educational series is for you,” explains Helen Evans, Program Manager for the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc. “Caregivers play a vital role in our community, but often they can feel alone, confused and frustrated. Navigating Life Transitions is an opportunity to learn about local resources that can help caregivers, gain support from professionals and fellow caregivers, and a chance to relax.” “Topics have been chosen to help caregivers understand the full-spectrum of long-term care options; including how to keep a loved-one at home by making specific modifications to their homes, understanding the various levels of care such as homecare, nursing homes, and assisted living options, and how to financially and emotionally plan for end-of-life care and services,” continued Kim Toot, Office for the Aging Director. “Our intention is to help family caregivers with challenging decisions. An informed decision helps decrease stress and caregiver burnout.” October 20, 2010 - The Comfort of Home Allegany County Office of the Aging Experienced Care Coordinators will provide information on services to keep older individuals independent and safe in their own home. Services discussed will include information for Veterans, Medicaid and Medicare recipients and those in need of end-of-life care. October 27, 2010 - The Family Guide to Long-Term Care Settings Local Healthcare Professionals Ombudsman Coordinator, Lynn Oyer, will discuss advocacy for residents living in Long Term Care Facilities. The ship had an unusually low profile, rising from the water only 18 inches, and had a draft of less than 11 feet so it could operate in the shallow harbors and rivers of the South. • On Oct. 27, 1904, the New York City subway opens. The line traveled 9.1 miles through 28 stations. The subway opened to the general public that evening, and more than 100,000 people paid a nickel each to take their first ride under Manhattan. • On Oct. 28, 1922, the first-ever cross-country broadcast of a college football game is heard. Telephone lines carried a play-by-play of the matchup -- the Chicago Maroons versus the Princeton Tigers -- from Chicago's Stagg Field to radio receivers up and down the East Coast. • On Oct. 31, 1957, Toyota executives, hoping to saturate the American market, introduce their inexpensive Toyopet Crown sedans. The car was a flop. It could barely meet California's standards for roadworthiness, guzzled extraordinary amounts of gas and oil, and tended to shake violently, overheat and stall with little warning • On Oct. 29, 1971, guitarist Duane Allman, leader of the Allman Brothers Band, is killed when he loses control of his motorcycle and drives into the side of a flatbed truck in Macon, Ga. One year later, the band's bassist died in a very similar accident just a few blocks away. • On Oct. 26, 1984, at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif., Dr. Leonard L. Bailey performs the first baboon-to-human heart transplant, replacing a 14-day-old infant girl's defective heart with the healthy heart of a young baboon. The infant, "Baby Fae," survived the operation, but died of heart failure after 20 days • On Oct. 30, 1991, the so-called perfect storm hits the North Atlantic. The fishing boat Andrea Gail and its six-member crew were lost in the storm. The disaster spawned the best-selling book "The Perfect Storm" by Sebastian Junger and a blockbuster Hollywood movie of the same name. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc. STRANGE BUT TRUE: By Samantha Weaver • The next time you're in South Dakota, you might want to make a side trip to the town of Rosalyn. Visitors there can take a look through the International Vinegar Museum. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc. Working with 10 other wildlife agencies, the Game Commission announced that its interstate response team is broadening the coalition of partners to include researchers at Pennsylvania’s Bucknell University, Northern Kentucky University and Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in Massachusetts In essence, these researchers have been involved in the WNS response for the past few years, particularly Dr. DeeAnn Reeder at Bucknell. All have made significant contributions to the effort to shed light on how WNS affects bats. That involvement made these universities perfect partners in the ongoing interstate probe, which is funded by state wildlife agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Competitive State Wildlife Grants Program. “The Competitive SWG grant of 2009 included $200,000 for high-priority research,” explained Lisa Williams, coordinator for the grant for the Game Commission. “Our partners unanimously identified treatment and control of White Nose Syndrome as their highest priority, but we wanted to wait until the timing was right to use the funding most effectively. At this point, preliminary WNS treatment studies have been completed, and we are at a point where targeted funds should help us move forward in the search for an agent to prevent or control the impacts of WNS.” “White-Nose Syndrome has spread rapidly since first being identified near Albany, New York, in 2007, and the best course of action for Northeast and Mid-Atlantic wildlife managers is to continue combining forces and resources to search for answers to this complex problem,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “Time is of the essence, because mortality has been extensive, bats aren’t overly plentiful and their reproductive rates are extremely low - one pup per adult female per year.” A multi-state review team selected the two projects from eight high-quality proposals received in response to a competitive call for projects announced in June. Proposals were reviewed and selected by representatives from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, New York Department of Environmental Conservation, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and West Virginia Division

of Natural Resources. The focus of both projects is to further the development of prevention and treatment options for wildlife managers facing White Nose Syndrome. To date, there has been little recourse to combat this disorder in bat hibernacula. Wildlife managers have been eliminating or limiting visits and disturbances to colonies and studying the carcasses of afflicted bats to learn more about this disorder’s cataclysmic consequences. Many managers, particularly those on the leading edge of WNS, have wished for a more active way to combat the threat. “We understand that there is little possibility of treating bats effectively throughout the entire Northeast even if these projects are incredibly successful,” noted Cal Butchkoski, the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Diversity Section biologist who was involved in project selection. “But development of a prevention or treatment tactic could be useful in protecting specific high-priority colonies of bats threatened by WNS.” The projects selected by the interstate panel of wildlife managers were: Terbinafine dosage and safety in WNS infected Myotis lucifugus: Correlation of survival, drug tissue levels, and toxic effects. Alison Robbins. Michael H. Court and Flo Tseng. Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Massachusetts. The purpose of this project is to determine dosages of the antifungal drug terbinafine in WNS-infected little brown bats that increase survival rates during hibernation. Fighting the good fight against Geomyces destructans: Evaluating non-invasive anti-Gd treatments and testing the ability of WNS-rehabilitated bats to resist Gd infection during hibernation. DeeAnn Reeder of Bucknell University and Hazel A. Barton of Northern Kentucky University. The purpose of this project is to: 1.) test the efficacy and safety of non-invasive antifungal treatments for two species of bats, and 2.) test whether affected bats that have been successfully rehabilitated have effectively shed the fungus and can hibernate in a clean environment without regrowth of the fungus. “This heightened multi-state response improves what wildlife agencies already had set into motion in the northeastern United States, but as WNS advances into more states, the potential for harm and the consequences associated with having fewer bats become greater,” explained Williams. “If the large bat colonies to the south of us encounter WNS, funding will need to rise dramatically to meet the threat headon. At stake are our Eastern bats, with several species imperiled. What remains unclear is whether WNS can be stopped and if we have the resources needed to do it.” In Pennsylvania, when it strikes a hibernating population of bats, WNS typically results in greater than 95 percent mortality after just two years of infection. But what has been seemingly unstoppable in bats appears to have no ill-effect on humans, with the exception that folks are finding dead and dying bats around their homes and occasionally afield. For more information on WNS, Pennsylvania cave bats or to report a sick bat in your area, visit the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us/). Hyperlinks to all of these areas can be found either on the website’s homepage or in the “Wildlife” section under “Wildlife Diseases.”

Don Cady of Richburg was the winner which entitles him to a free lunch at the next luncheon. Answers: 1. Tool to square up a grindstone given by Elma Pangburn. 2. Ox Shoe given by Ray Payne. 3. Hand pump vacuum sweeper given by Dave Evans. 4. Hand clothes washer, manufactured 1873 in Richburg by Edwin S. Bliss Triumph Washer Co.

It’s an information jungle out there.
Nearly one American every minute is a victim of identity theft. The thieves don’t need much. A receipt you left behind. A bill mailed from your mailbox. A missing check. Information provided over the Internet to strangers. You get the idea.

Banks help catch and prosecute these crooks. You can help, too.
• Never give your Social Security number or credit information to anyone who calls you. • Tear up receipts and unused credit card offers. • Don’t mail bills from your mailbox. Thieves may use them to change your address. • Review your monthly accounts for fraud regularly. • Order copies of your credit report once a year to insure accuracy. • Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Don’t carry that information on you. • Report suspected fraud to your bank immediately.

For more information, call us. Or visit the Web site of the American Bankers Association at www.aba.com. Don’t get caught alone in the jungle.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • Great advice that will save you money: Lower the temperature of your water heater to 105 F. It’s hot enough for washing, but not hot enough to scald a small child or sensitive skin. • “Ever since we installed shaker pegs in the kids’ bathroom, the towels get hung up regularly. I think they used to have trouble putting the towels on the bar, and it’s easier this way.” -- E.S. in Oregon (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

TYPE O NEGATIVE BLOOD SUPPLY DROPS TO CRITICALLY LOW LEVELS October 12, 2010 - The American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region today announced that the supply of type O negative blood has dropped to critically low levels. Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations. Type O negative donors are needed now to help prevent the blood supply from further decline. In recent weeks, the Red Cross has seen a decline in collections, possibly due to torrential rain and flooding and early onset of seasonal illness. However, the need for blood has not declined. The Red Cross reminds donors that receiving a flu shot does not make a person ineligible to donate blood as long as they feel fine at the time of their donation. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The Red Cross New York - Penn Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to 120 hospitals and must have 1,200 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source. Eligible volunteer blood donors are asked to please call 1800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org/ to find a blood drive and to make appointments. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood. Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate. DOLLAR STRETCHER WANT TO LIVE BETTER on the money you already make? S.W. SMITH LIBRARY NEWS The Class of 1960 of the Port Allegany High School made a wonderful contribution to the Building Fund of the S.W. Smith Memorial Public Library. Last week a check for $3,795.34 was presented to the director of the fund. Particularly touching was the explanation on the notation line of the check- “With love!”. The gift represented the profit from the production “Moments to Remember” which the Class sponsored as a benefit for the Library. Dotty and Joel Anderson (Joel is a member of that Class) suggested the idea that Port Allegany people put on a musical revue of the songs the Class of 1960 sang and danced to during their high school days. The extravaganza was written, produced and directed by Paul Herzog of Coudersport who had produced a similar program in Coudersport. Auditions were held; decisions were made. About 50 (+ or -) adults and a few children were chosen and rehearsals began. The school auditorium holds 600 and it was sold out. It was fun watching the 1960 graduates arriving and greeting their old friends. The vibes were happy and jolly and made for a wonderful audience. Cast members said they fed from the exuberance of the classmates. The Board of Trustees, the Library Staff, the Friends of the Library and the director of the Fund Drive salute the Class of 1960, the participants, the volunteer coaches and the instrumental combo. What a great money donation; what a quality performance; what a good feeling for the community; what further programs may develop from this one? f

NASCAR THIS WEEK Racing in the Sprint Cup Series week to week is as tough for Regan Smith and Furniture Row Racing as it is for the points leader, Jimmie Johnson. Probably tougher. Still, given the limitations in resources at the small team, Smith is holding his own. Smith is 30th in the point standings and has made the field for every race. He is coming off his best finish of the season, a 12th at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. (With limited resources, Regan The 27-year-old Cato, N.Y., native Smith came away with his best was the 2008 Raybestos Rookie of finish of the season at Auto Club the Year. In 2008, Smith, then Speedway, finishing 12th. He overcame two early race penalties driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc., and took the lead briefly with 13 took the checkered flag a Cup race in Talladega, Ala. A controversial laps left. ) penalty for "passing under the yellow line" overturned the victory, which was awarded instead to Tony Stewart. The record books show Smith as finishing 18th. A late caution flag in Fontana put Smith's No. 78 Chevy near the front of the field in the Pepsi Max 400. Crew chief Pete Rondeau elected to change two tires while the leaders were all changing four. That left Smith in second place and with 13 laps remaining, he briefly took the lead. The worn left-side tires took a toll on Smith's performance, but it was worth a shot. "Two tires worked for us," said Smith. "We got the much-needed track position. Pete (Rondeau) made a really good call at the end. When we took the two tires, the car was pretty good. I was just lacking a little bit of grip to hold it for much more than that one lap. But to still

maintain 12th was pretty good. It's just frustrating to be so close to the top 10 and not get it." What made the comeback even more noteworthy was the fact that Smith had twice been penalized earlier in the race. "It was a roller-coaster day for us," he said. "We were running in the top 15 early and then got called for speeding twice on pit road, which moved us all the way back to the low 30s in track position. "I guess misery loves company."

Here's A Tip • If you have problems with tears and watery, stinging eyes when cutting onions, remove the skin under water. Cut the top off an onion, and submerge it in a small bowl of water. Remove the outer layer and the skin while it's under water. Take it out and chop. This should lessen your symptoms.

• "Keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. Your robe will be nice and warm. Hopefully it will make getting out of bed a little less harsh when it's freezing in the house." -- B.M. in N.Y.

Q: I am a great fan of Zachary Quinto of "Heroes." Now that the show has been canceled, what else can I see him in? Also, will there be a sequel to "Star Trek," and will he play Spock again? -- Marie K., Port Charlotte, Fla. A: Zachary will be back to reprise his role as Spock in the as-yetuntitled sequel to 2009's smash-hit reboot of the popular sci-fi series, "Star Trek." Pretty much all the principal stars are back on board for the follow-up movie, which is due to hit theaters in summer 2012. Quinto recently completed two movies, PHOTO: Zachary Quinto "Girl Walks Into a Bar" with Josh Hartnett and Danny DeVito, and "Margin Call" with Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons and Paul Bettany. Q: I haven't seen anything about "Sons of Anarchy" returning to FX. Please tell me it hasn't been canceled. -- Pam M., Southbury, Conn. A: Season three of "Sons of Anarchy" attracted almost 5 million viewers per week, making it FX's highest rated series ever, so you can bet it'll be back for a fourth season. Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and Katey Sagal all will return for a 13-episode season next year. I'll keep you posted on the exact date as it becomes available. Q: What can you tell me about actor Dermot Mulroney? I love his acting and wonder why we don't see more of him. -- Sharon F., Hamden, Conn. A: Dermot was slated to star in the "Rockford Files" reboot for NBC, but he was dropped when NBC execs were not satisfied with the pilot episode. Word is that Josh Holloway of "Lost" in is the running to take over the role of Jim Rockford. Dermot has been keeping busy, however,

We have tried to learn more about him at the library, but can't seem to find much. Can you tell me about his personal life: children, wives, when he died and where he was buried? -- Lisa S., Clarksville, Tenn. A: William Powell, who won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in 1935's "The Thin Man" (and again for "My Man Godfrey" and "Life With Father"), was married three times. His first wife, Eileen Wilson, bore him his only child, son William David, who committed suicide in 1968 after a period of poor health. He also was married to actress Carole Lombard from 1931-33, but his third and final wife, actress Diane Lewis, was the one who stuck. They were married from 1940 until William's death from cardiac arrest in 1984 at the age of 91. He is buried in Desert Memorial Park in Palm Springs, Calif. Other famous "residents" include Frank Sinatra and Sonny Bono, as well as William Jr. and Diane (who passed away in 1997). GOOD HOUSEKEEPING TWO Fast-Baked Apples with Oatmeal Streusel Cooking apples in the microwave, rather than the regular oven, yields plumper, juicier, less shriveled fruit -- and saves a big chunk of time! Baked apples have always been a favorite dessert in America. We've adapted Eliza Leslie's recipe from the 1848 edition of Directions for Cookery, and it's still good today. 4 large (about 10 ounces each) Rome or Cortland apples 1/4 cup (packed) brown sugar 1/4 cup quick-cooking oats, uncooked 2 tablespoons (chopped) dates 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons margarine or butter 1. Core apples, cutting out a 1 1/4-inch diameter cylinder from center of each, almost but not all the way through to bottom. Remove peel about

one-third of the way down from top. Place apples in shallow 1 1/2-quart ceramic casserole or 8-inch by 8-inch glass baking dish. 2. In small bowl, combine brown sugar, oats, dates and cinnamon. Fill each cored apple with equal amounts of oat mixture. (Mixture will spill over top of apples.) Place 1/2 teaspoon margarine or butter on top of filling in each apple. 3. Cook apples, covered, on Medium-High (70 percent power) until tender, 12 to 14 minutes, turning each apple halfway through. Spoon cooking liquid from baking dish over apples to serve. Serves 4. • Each serving: About 240 calories, 3g total fat (1g saturated), 0g cholesterol, 30mg sodium, 54g total carbohydrate, 0g dietary fiber, 2g protein. (c) 2010 Hearst Communications, Inc. • On Nov. 4, 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a step leading to the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The most splendid architectural find was a stone sarcophagus containing three nested coffins. Inside the final, solid gold coffin was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • “Slow cookers make great servers for hot cider and also hot chocolate. You can keep them on warm for as long as you like, and there’s no need to reheat -- it’s always the right temperature.” -- C.B. in Minnesota • Here’s a great idea: When you clean out your fish tank, use the water in your garden. Pour it on your plants or put in a watering can and use a little on each of your houseplants. • Store sour-cream and cottage-cheese containers upside-down. The contents will keep longer. This also works for larger yogurt containers. • Plastic grocery bags always come in handy. Store them in empty tissue boxes for the car or bathroom, or use an empty 12-pack soda box to store even more under your kitchen sink or in the garage. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • If you are whipping fresh cream, make sure you chill bowls, beaters and cream before starting. Get them good and cold. It will give the best results. • This is a great recipe for deer repellent: Mix up hot peppers, garlic cloves, liquid soap and water. Spray your plants with the mixture. It will not hurt the plants, but it will keep the deer (and other animals) from eating them.

Penn State Water Resources Extension Educator, Jim Clark, will discuss pre-drill water testing by gas companies and voluntary testing by landowners, how to test water quality, reading water test reports, and the use of accredited water labs. The latter part of the program will be dedicated to discussing research being conducted. Penn State and the Cooperative Extension have received funding from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Water Resources Research Center to study the potential impacts of Marcellus gas drilling on rural drinking water wells. Statewide, about 200 private water wells near completed Marcellus gas well sites will be selected for free post-drilling water testing of several water quality parameters.

Interested water well owners who meet the research parameters will receive water testing materials and instructions at the workshop. At the workshop, each water well owner will be asked to complete a short survey about their experiences with gas drilling. Water samples and completed surveys must be returned to the workshop site the following morning between 7 and 9 a.m. so they can be returned to the Penn State water testing *** ANGLICAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD 29 South St. at Stone St., Cuba, NY Services as announced.

laboratory. The samples will not be legal chain-of-custody samples required to legally document impacts of gas drilling. However, the results will be used for research purposes and to educate the landowner. To be eligible for the study and the free water quality testing, participants must meet all of the following criteria. They must: Own a private water well. No springs or cisterns can be included in the study. Have an existing Marcellus gas well - drilled and hydrofractured within about 5,000 feet (or one mile) of the water well. The well must be a Marcellus well, not a shallow gas well. Provide copies of a water test from a state-accredited water lab showing, at a minimum, pre-drilling concentrations of total dissolved solids, chloride and barium in the water well. Be willing to take and submit a sample from the water well on the morning after the workshop and return it to the workshop site between 7 and 9 a.m. Due to funding constraints, all eligible applicants cannot be promised inclusion in the study. Selection will be based on eligibility, geographic location and other factors. Participants interested in attending the workshop need to pre-register with Jim Clark at 814-887-5613 or [email protected] .
