DOUBLE HUNG 5600!

What is real to you? I heard recently about a woman who fell asleep in front of her T.V. Before she fell asleep, she had put a videotape of a log burning in a fireplace. You know, it’s one of those relaxation tapes. Well, evidently it worked because she fell asleep. Some time later she woke up a little bit, looked at the log burning, and thought the house was on fire. So she jumped up, grabbed her cordless phone, ran outside and called 9-1-1 for the local fire department. Well, the local fire department arrived, looked for any smoke pouring from the home, and when they couldn’t find any, they stormed inside. They saw the roaring blaze on the T.V. and immediately put it out - with the remote control. Sometimes, like this woman, we get confused about what’s real in life, don’t we? Somethings appear real but aren’t. Other things may be too good to be true but they are real. No matter how real the negative fire seems in your life, filter it out. See it for what it is. Then choose to be positive as you listen to life and make a positive life today.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Memory Lane Have you made a memory book for those who come after you? This is a project that’s better done sooner rather than later, and the quiet week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is perfect for getting started. Consider it a gift to future generations of your whole life in pictures and words. Things to include: Written text -- Whether you use typed and printed pages or write in longhand, it’s your words that have the most value. Photos -- Pick out some photos to include in your book and write about each one. Start at the beginning with your earliest photographs, which might include your parents. Include school photos through the years. Add in teenage heartthrobs, your wedding and pictures of your own children as they came along. Music of the times -- If you can’t remember the names of favorite songs or the year they came out, look online or even in your own record collection. News of the day -- Look online at history.com to refresh your memory of specific dates and how events affected you. Memorabilia -- Was your spouse or a parent in the military? Do you still have all the letters sent home? Consider adding some of them to the collection, or at least some selected quotes. NOTE: Are your photographs all in boxes? Your first step in preparing a memory book might well be to pick up a few of those special markers to write on the back of unidentified photographs. Then categorize them into subjects or time periods, and spring for a few photo boxes to put them in, or use 9 by 12-inch envelopes instead.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Love Thy Neighbor? Not These Dogs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German shepherd, “Sandy,” is a sweet-tempered dog who has a loud bark but is not aggressive at all. She will lie down once a visitor comes in and stop barking without my telling her to. However, every morning she goes over to a hole in our fence and waits until the neighbor’s dog is let out to play. Then, she’ll growl and bark like mad. The other dog will do the same, rushing up to the hole and snarling at Sandy. I’m afraid if they see each other in the street, they’ll fight. What can I do? -Jane T. in Dothan, Ala. DEAR JANE: Is your neighbor aware of the situation? What’s his or her take? If you haven’t talked about the dogs’ behavior with them yet, do so. Don’t issue any ultimatums, just say, “Have you noticed our dogs growl at each other through the fence? Does it worry you?” The easiest short-term solution, after talking to the neighbors, is to fix the hole in the fence. This might stop the territorial barking and growling, although neighbor dogs tend to bark at each other despite fences they can’t see through. If your neighbors agree, arrange a “play date” to see how your dogs act when they’re in the same space together. Both should be on a leash and controlled by their owner. If they show any aggression like snarling or lunging, separate them immediately. A fight could make the aggression worse. Your dog and the neighbors’ dog may be relegated to barking at each other through a fence that doesn’t allow them to see each other, in order to keep the peace. Q: I have a Jackie Gleason sweatshirt that reads “Baby, You Are the Greatest.” Is there any value for it? -- Dorothy, Julian, Calif. A: I checked several Internet auction sites and found hundreds of Jackie Gleason items being offered for sale, including his LPs, mostly priced in the $5 to $15 range; a comic book from 1956, $20; a collector’s plate featuring the cast members of “The Honeymooners,” $5; a coffee mug, $6; a 1962 Life magazine with Gleason on the cover, $6; and a sweatshirt like the one you own for $10. Gleason died in 1987 at the age of 1971 and is buried in Florida. His epitaph reads, “And Away We Go.” Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected]. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

COLLECTING By Larry Cox Frankoma Q: What can you tell me about Frankoma? Any value? -- Maxine, Mesa, Ariz. A: Frankoma began as the Frank Pottery Company in Sapulpa, Okla., in 1933. The company, under the direction of its founder, John Frank, produced vases, bowls and decorative figurals, all marked with the likeness of pacing leopard and the “Frankoma” mark. The entire operation was destroyed in 1938, and it is the early pieces from the pre-fire years that have collectors scrambling. The plant was rebuilt, and its later production is fairly common. A second destructive fire practically wiped out the business in 1943, and a third in 1983. Each time the company rebuilt. Typical prices are Donkey Mug, 1975, $35; batter pitcher, $40; Wagon Wheel plate, $7; wall pocket in Leaf pattern, $45; and vase in dusty rose, $35. In Arkansas and Oklahoma, interesting pieces of Frankoma occasionally can be found in thrift stores and at yard sales for only a dollar or two, much less than book value. *** Q: I purchased an early television set at a local flea market. It is a DuMont Model RA-103, a tabletop model with a 12-inch screen. When was it manufactured, and what do you think is its approximate value? -- Stan, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: I found your TV referenced in the Antique Trader Radio and Television Price Guide, edited by Kyle Husfloen (Krause, $19.99). Your TV was manufactured in 1947, and Hosfloen lists its value in the $300 to $400 range.

of Labor, the surveys go out to firms in six industry clusters this week. If your company receives a green survey, please respond promptly. In many cases, responses are as simple as placing a check in the box. The Labor Department will pool each firm's responses with data from other similar businesses. The final report will not contain any details from an individual firm, only group results. This is a key way for the employer community to help government assess the potential for green jobs and the training they require. Green industries have a ripple effect on all aspects of the economy. They spur new business opportunities as industries integrate clean energy technologies, practices and services. The survey targets these industry clusters: * Construction * Energy and environment-related manufacturing * Electric power generation, transmission and distribution * Professional services * Financial services and * Building services "Green jobs are important for New York's economic future, not only in terms of getting people back to work, but also to help citizens and businesses reduce energy usage," said Labor Department Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner. "This grant will help provide information that will help us make sure green businesses have the skilled workers they need to grow." The partners in this research project are: * The Department of Labor * The State University of New York's Office of Business and Industry Relations * The New York City Labor Market Information Service at the City University of New York Graduate Center * The Energy and Moneysaver Environmental Technology Shopping Guide Applications Center (E2TAC) at •14707 Allentown, NY the College of Nanoscale •14708 Alma, NY Science and Engineering •14715 Bolivar, NY (CNSE) of the University at Albany and •14721 Ceres, NY * The Advanced Energy Center •14770 Portville, NY at Stony Brook University •14774 Richburg, NY Consulting partners on this •14754 Little Genesee, NY initiative include: •14786 W. Clarksville, NY •14739 Friendship, NY (R.D.#1) * Business associations * Labor organizations •16748 Shinglehouse, PA * Utility companies and * Other key industry Moneysaver stakeholders

A stratified, random sample of employers in New York State got a letter that sends them to a dedicated web site to fill out the survey. In two weeks, they will get a reminder, along with a paper copy of the survey. For more information, contact the NYS Department of Labor hotline toll-free at 1-877-201-4693 or email [email protected]. f

RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW EXPERIENCE - THE FRESH AIR FUND! Make a New Year’s resolution that could benefit the entire family for years to come: volunteer with The Fresh Air Fund! Close to 5,000 New York City children visit volunteer host families for up to two weeks every summer through The Fund’s Friendly Town program in communities from Virginia to Maine and into Canada. In 2011, give your family a chance to spend time together, introduce your children or grandchildren to the importance of volunteering and make a difference in the life of an inner-city child. It might still be cold outside, but the time to sign up is now! “Visiting my host family is so much fun! I swim, spend time with my summer sister, camp out in the backyard and even write in a journal,” explained an 11-year-old Fresh Air child from Brooklyn. Since 1877, New York City children growing up in lowincome neighborhoods have experienced simple summer pleasures in rural and suburban communities through The Fresh Air Fund. By welcoming visitors into their homes during the summer, host families give Fresh Air children a break from the sometimes dangerous, hot and crowded city streets. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child, please contact Anne Beasley at 315-676-5796 or The Fresh Air Fund at 800-367-0003. You can also visit The Fund’s website at www.freshair.org to view photos and read testimonials of families who have experienced the joys of hosting a Fresh Air child. f

GAME COMMISSION URGES PARTICIPATION IN CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania Game Commission officials are urging wildlife enthusiasts to join the tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the United States in the Audubon Society’s 111th Annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), which will take place Dec. 14, through Jan. 5, 2011. “Bird enthusiasts, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists, will head out on an annual mission - often before dawn - to make a difference and to experience the beauty of creation,” said Dan Brauning, Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Division chief. “Each year, volunteers brave snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count, and they have made an enormous contribution to conservation to help guide conservation actions. “The data collected through this effort - which is the longestrunning wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - allows researchers, conservation biologists, and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey, it provides a picture of how the continent’s bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years.” Local counts will occur on one day between Dec. 14, 2010 and Jan. 5, 2011. Volunteers can pick the most convenient circle, or participate in more than one count. There is a specific methodology to the CBC, but everyone can participate. The count takes place within “Count Circles,” which focus on specific geographical areas. Each circle is led by a “Count Compiler,” who is an experienced birdwatcher, enabling beginning birders to learn while they assist. Also, those who live within the boundaries of a Count Circle can even stay at home and report the birds that visit their backyard feeders, or join a group of birdwatchers in a local field. “In either case, if you have never been on a CBC before your first step is to locate and contact your local Count Compiler to find out how you can volunteer,” Brauning said. Doug Gross, Game Commission ornithologist, noted that the CBC does contribute to conservation because it allows monitoring of bird species that spend winters in Pennsylvania. “Some of these species are much easier to count or monitor in winter because their breeding ground is so far north in areas where there are few people or roads to give access to habitat,” Gross said. “An example of this is the rusty blackbird that migrates from the Boreal Taiga Forests of Canada and Alaska to the southeastern United States in winter. Pennsylvania is on the northern edge of its winter range, and some CBCs do count this declining wetland songbird. Hawks also are more easily counted in winter and our state is a good place to see several hawk species in winter, including redtailed hawks and rough-legged hawks.” Gross also noted that the CBC is a good way to introduce beginners to bird identification. To view instructions on how to search for a circle and signup for an open count, visit the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) and click on “Wildlife” in menu bar at the top of the homepage, and then choose the “Christmas Bird Count” under the “Wild Birds and Birding” listing. Information also can be obtained from Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count website (www.audubon.org/Bird/cbc), or on the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology’s website (www.pabirds.org).

Chesterton who gave the following sage bit of advice: "Don't ever take a fence down until you know the reason it was put up." • When Richard Nixon first ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives (which he won in 1946), he funded his campaign largely with money he won playing poker while serving as a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II. • From 1863 until 1945, the city of Vicksburg, Miss., didn't celebrate the Fourth of July holiday. This is because during the Civil War, the Confederate city was surrendered to Union forces on that day, an event that was considered to be one of the turning points of the war. • It was once thought that when snakes went through their version of hibernation they rejuvenated themselves, and therefore that serpents lived forever. • There's talk everywhere these days about the growing problem posed by the fact that people in the U.S. are becoming more and more overweight. Interestingly, when the International Journal of Obesity was first published, in 1993, it was 509 pages long; the 2006 edition totaled 2,322 pages. Coincidence? • It was one Dr. Spencer Silver, a chemist, who invented the adhesive used today in Post-it notes, but he had no luck promoting his invention. Six years later, one of his colleagues, Art Fry, came up with a use for it that stuck (so to speak). While sitting in church one day, Fry's attention wandered from the sermon to the scraps of paper he used to mark his place in the hymnal, which kept falling out. Connecting his annoying problem and his friend's invention, the Post-it was born.

NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton

Denny Hamlin's (left) inspirational run was one of the season's highlights; Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s (right) disappointing finish in the points standings was a low, both personally and for the sport. (John Clark/ NASCAR This Week photo) 2010 Season's Highs and Lows HIGH: Jimmie Johnson won a record fifth consecutive Sprint Cup championship, which is even more impressive in that no one else in the sport's history has won more than three. LOW: The exhortation of NASCAR vice president Robin Pemberton -- "Have at it, boys" -- proved to be emblematic of the season that followed. An on-track feud between drivers Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski boiled over in both the Cup and Nationwide Series. No one was hurt, but the crashes were scary and obviously intentional. HIGH: Denny Hamlin's run for the championship was inspirational and heartbreaking. Hamlin persevered in spite of a knee injury that required surgery ... while he continued to race. He led Johnson by 33 points with two races remaining but wound up losing the championship by 39.

LOW: Dale Earnhardt Jr. continued to struggle. Ninety-three races have passed since his last victory. He will begin his fourth season at Hendrick Motorsports with his third crew chief, Steve Letarte. (A fourth, Brian Whitesell, took the reins just for one race.) He finished 21st in the standings and collected only three top-five finishes. HIGH: Another driver who didn't qualify for the Chase won the season's two most prestigious races. Jamie McMurray captured both the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. LOW: Upset at being criticized, NASCAR officials tried to fine two drivers, Hamlin and Ryan Newman, in secrecy. Naturally, word leaked out, leading some to wonder what else the ruling body was hiding. HIGH: The season's two races at Talladega Superspeedway produced a total of 175 lead changes. The individual numbers were 88 and 87, the two highest such totals in the sport's history. LOW: Two of the sport's more dignified drivers, Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton, exchanged blows after Burton inexplicably wrecked Gordon's Chevy under a caution flag at Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 7. It's difficult to buy Burton's explanation that he didn't do it on purpose. HIGH: The Raybestos Rookie of the Year in the Camping World Truck Series, Austin Dillon, actually won two races. LOW: The rookie of the year in Cup, Kevin Conway, never finished higher than 14th and was 35th in the point standings. HIGH: The most improved performance came from Kevin Harvick, who bettered his average finish from 19.9 in 2009 to 8.7 in 2010. Under the point system in place prior to 2004, Harvick would have finished the season with 295 points more than any other driver. LOW: Even though three of its drivers made the Chase, and Edwards won the season's final two races, Ford's NASCAR program still had a disappointing year. Chevys won 18 Cup races, and Toyotas won 12. Fords won four, and Dodge's one-team, three-car effort claimed two. *** Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. E-mail Monte at [email protected]. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

VETERANS POST By Freddy Groves - How You Can Help Homeless Veterans The last statistics I’ve seen indicate that on any given night, there could be a half million homeless veterans sleeping on the streets or in shelters. If you need services, call the nearest National Guard Armory or American Legion Post and ask for the date of the next Stand Down. If it’s not soon enough to help you now, or if they’re not holding one during cold weather, go to the closest library and use its computers to find www1.va.gov/Homeless online. You can also call National Coalition for Homeless Veterans at (800) VET-HELP. If you’re lucky enough to have a home, you can help homeless veterans through your closest VA Medical Center. Call Volunteer Services at any center and ask what they need. Homeless patients could use any number of items when they’re released from treatment: cold-weather coat, socks and underwear, lined jeans, gloves, hat and more. Ask what’s needed, and then provide it. It might be as simple as a pair of jeans in an uncommon size, a whole outfit of clothing with a few extra shirts, or a bag of personal-care supplies if the veteran is coming out of rehab and moving into a halfway-house situation. Sometimes homeless veterans being transitioned into an apartment of their own need “welcome home” supplies, such as cleaning supplies, dish towels, laundry basket, toilet paper, kitchen trash can, paper towels, sponges and more to get through the initial period before they’re on their feet. A female friend recently shopped for one of these baskets, and the total, even when loaded with extra items, came to less than $100.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Here’s Why You Need a Flu Shot Oh, we’re an obstinate bunch. It seems that the older we get, the less likely we are to listen to others who have our welfare in mind. A recent study indicates a whole lot of seniors don’t want to get an annual flu shot. Some of us come up with interesting excuses not to get the shot, mostly having to do with how bad we think the flu is going to be, our general state of health and whether we’re likely to get the flu, and how well we think the shot would work if we did get one. I can tell you one very compelling reason to get the flu shot: delay of first heart attack. This information comes from another study reported in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. It says that getting a flu shot early in the season brings a 19 percent reduction in the occurrence of acute myocardial infarction. Shots received after the middle of November had a smaller reduction, but a reduction just the same. The pneumonia shot didn’t do a thing. Consumer Reports’ health magazine also is getting into the act with a poll about why people don’t want a flu shot. One big reason cited is that last year’s flu season was a big nothing, especially because it hit younger people harder. What we need to remember, however, is that in a normal flu year, 90 percent of the deaths from flu are in the 65-and-older age group. Consider this, too: According Consumer Reports, if you have to go to the emergency room with a twisted ankle, there’s a 50 percent chance that your nurses won’t have had a flu shot. I also had the gutters cleaned a month ago. However, when we had a big rain two weeks ago, water leaked into the basement on the left side of the house -- the side I did the gutter extension on. What’s happening? Will a new gutter system solve the problem? -- Mary B., Chicago A: A gutter extension is an inexpensive way to direct rainwater away from the side and foundation of the house. And a twice-yearly gutter cleaning also helps keep gutters from overflowing where debris dams up. If your gutters are in good condition -- not cracked, broken, filled with debris or leaking extensively -- then a new gutter system is probably not the solution.

During the next rain, look at how the water drains away in your backyard. Does it drain back toward the house? In the area that the gutter extension drains, which direction does it drain? If the ground slopes back toward the house, no extension is going to stop that water flow. Next, inspect the foundation on the outside of the house and in the basement. A visual inspection is all that’s necessary. Do you notice any big cracks or damage outside or inside? Do you notice water pooling around the foundation? Finally, whether you see damage or pooling -- or not -- contact a foundation specialist to look at the problem. Foundation or yard drainage repairs can be expensive, but the damage that continual water seepage can do to your home is even more expensive. Additionally, contact the company that installed the gutter extension. If your drainage problem hasn’t been resolved, have them look at the problem as well. A simpler fix, like adjusting the gutter extension or improving the drainage area, might be all it takes. HOME TIP: Keep your home’s foundation free of debris and foliage growth by trimming shrubs and grass a foot back, to reduce the risk of water seepage. *** sinus cavities of the head could be OVERCOMERS subjected to a difference between CHURCH OF FAITH their own internal pressure and the Aiken, PA outside barometric pressure. Is your holiday shopping completed? Did you stick to your budget and use saved cash, or are you afraid to look at the stack of credit-card receipts you’ve accumulated? If you’ve reached the end of your budgeted money, yes ... you can stop shopping. Don’t buy another thing, even if you see a super sale. If you used credit cards because you didn’t save in advance, you’ll need a plan of attack to pay off the balance. Your first step will be to determine whether your credit-card purchases put your balance over 50 percent of your available credit. Going over that 50 percent amount can impact your credit score long term. If that has happened, do everything you can to immediately bring the balance below that 50 percent. Consider taking out a lower interest loan, perhaps at a credit union, to pay off the entire balance. If you’re expecting a tax refund and haven’t paid off the credit card by the time the check arrives, use it first to pay off the debt. If you’ve stayed under that 50 percent amount, break the balance into three payments and pay it off quickly. If you can’t clear the balance in three payments, at least make more than the minimum payment. There’s a place on your credit report that indicates whether you make more than

the minimum payments, and that helps your credit score. If your credit card statement after the holidays offers you a month of no payment, send a payment anyway. The interest meter never stops running, and the cost of your gifts will continue to rise. If you haven’t started your shopping yet, reconsider how much you’ll spend. Decide whether it’s possible to go all-cash this year, perhaps by not sending gifts to people outside your immediate family. Idea: Start a Christmas Club account at your bank or credit union for next year. Every month you’ll deposit a set amount, and by the next shopping season all of your holiday money will be waiting for you. The interest paid will be minimal, but you’ll have the satisfaction of having no credit-card debt after the holidays. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

It ‘s Tough Getting Old
By Ronda Addy As your canine companion gets older, their muzzle will turn gray, their hearing and vision will diminish, and their energy will wane. These are all natural signs of aging. Should you detect more severe changes in your dog, especially in their personality, you might want to have them tested for Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD). Similar to

Alzheimer’s disease, CCD stems from physical changes in the brain and strikes dogs age 10 and older. Dogs affected by CCD no longer learn, think or remember as they once did, which causes behavioral changes. Symptoms of CCD vary and often include: • Failing to respond to name or familiar commands • Failing to recognize or greet others or being startled by them • Staring at walls or into space and being

startled when the lights or TV is turned on • Forgetting familiar routines or tricks • Getting trapped under or behind furniture or stuck in corners • Appearing lost or confused in familiar places such as the backyard or house • Having trouble negotiating stairs or finding and using doors • Frequently shaking or trembling while standing up or lying down • Wandering or pacing aimlessly around the house • Engaging in repetitive, compulsive behavior • Walking around in circles compulsively, even at night • Barking for no reason or getting agitated easily • Sleeping less at night and more during the day • No longer caring about getting affection and walking away from it • Having accidents even after having just gone outside • Stopping to ask to go out • Forgetting the reason for going outdoors • Hesitating to take treats,

drink fresh water or eat fresh food If you notice any of these symptoms, take your dog to the vet. Some of these symptoms can be contributed to other diseases, and your vet will need to rule those out. There is no cure for CCD, but there is a drug treatment that can help. If your dog responds to it, they will need to be on the medication for the rest of their life. There are side effects, which you vet will discuss with you. They might also suggest changes in diet and food supplements to protect your dog’s brain cells. In addition to drug treatment, your vet might suggest you take some measures to make your dog’s life easier. Some of these may include: • Not moving or changing the furniture • Eliminating clutter to make a wide pathway throughout the house • Creating ramps where there are stairs • Recognizing your dog’s limits when it comes to introducing to them to new toys, food, animals or people • Sticking to a routine feeding, watering and walking schedule • Keeping commands short, simple and soft • Encouraging gentle, short, involved play sessions As your dog ages, it’s important to pay attention to their behavior and not to dismiss changes as signs of old age. You must be patient and empathize with how your dog must be feeling. Unlike people, they cannot voice their frustrations. Your continued love and respect are what they need the most. They’re still your best friend.

Did You Know?
By Ronda Addy With all of the hundreds of different dog breeds around the world, there are bound to be some interesting facts about dogs that you may not know. Let’s see how many of these you recognize. • As far back as 4,000 B.C., Afghan hounds were mentioned in some writings. • One of Britain’s oldest breeds is the bearded collie. • A Basenji does not bark; instead, it makes a yodeling noise. • A beagle’s nose is dark at birth and only turns pink as the dog leaves puppyhood. • The Boston terrier is a cross between the English bulldog and the white English terrier. • Servicemen returning from WWI introduced the boxer to the United States. • When fighting, the boxer strikes out with its front paws, thereby giving it its name. • The Cairn terrier was developed on the Isle of Skye

Safety First
By Ronda Addy You hear about people child-proofing their homes, but did you know you should also pet-proof your home? There are a lot of everyday household items that can be hazardous to pets. Before you bring a pet into your home, you should be aware of what exactly some of the hazards are. Let’s take a look at what items you need to be on the lookout for. While some of these food items are harmless to humans, they can be lethal to your pet. • Alcoholic beverages • Avocados, the skin and the pit • Caffeine • Chocolate • Cigarette smoke and tobacco products • Moldy food • Mushrooms • Raw meat

• Matches • Mothballs • Oven cleaners • Oven-heated no-stick cookware • Paint and related materials • Perfume • Pesticides • Propane • Spray starches • Suntan oils and lotions • Wax Indoor and outdoor plants look pretty, but they, too, can be harmful if digested by your pet. Ones you should be aware of include: • Amaryllis • Azaleas • Birds of paradise • Bulb flowers, like daffodils and iris • Calla lily leaves • Cherry trees, every part but the fruit • Eggplant, every part but the fruit • English ivy • Eucalyptus • Holly • Honeysuckle • Lilies • Lily of the valley • Mistletoe • Oak • Philodendron

• Poison ivy/oak/sumac • Rhubarb • Sweet pea • Yew It isn’t easy to tell if your pet has been exposed to or ingested hazardous materials. Some symptoms show up right away, while others can take weeks. If you suspect your pet has been exposed to or ingested any type of hazardous materials, contact your vet immediately. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

cats that do this could have a urinary-tract infection or diabetes. Snowball was treated for six weeks for a urinary infection and still continues to urinate outside of her box. I took her back to the vet to be tested again for urinary-tract infection and diabetes. Both tests were negative. The vet thinks she's just mad at us. I'm tired of this happening. Any suggestions? -- Michelle S., via e-mail DEAR MICHELLE: There's usually a good reason for a cat urinating regularly outside the litter box, and being "just mad" is probably not one of them. You did the right thing by having her checked and treated for a urinary tract infection, and checked for more serious diseases, so you've eliminated a physical issue that may have initiated the problem. Now it's time to address the behavioral issue -which has nothing to do with Snowball resenting you, but more to do with an association she's formed. First, get rid of both litter boxes (yes, the new one too). Thoroughly clean the area where they were located, and then get a new box. Next, monitor Snowball closely. As soon as she starts urinating anywhere other than her box, simply pick her up and place her in the box. Use soothing, encouraging language. She may be associating the box with the pain of her urinary-tract infection, so you need to reintroduce her to it. Remember also to thoroughly clean the areas that Snowball has urinated using an enzyme cleaner developed specifically for pet cleanup. It's available at pet stores. If she's urinated on carpet, you may need to treat the padding underneath as well. Cat Goes Everywhere But the Litter Box
By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My house cat "Snowball" has been having problems urinating in places other than her litter box. She loves rugs, towels, my daughters' beds, pillows and even her own bed. The vet suggested getting another litter box. She now has two. She will urinate on something within 1 foot of a litter box. There’s only one guy who should drive loaded.
When it comes to alcohol, it’s easy to be fooled by appearances. But the fact is, an “innocent” 12 oz. mug of beer or a “harmless” 5 oz. glass of wine is as guilty of causing intoxication as a standard 1 1/4 oz. shot of hard liquor. No matter what you’re drinking, one drink per hour sets the pace for responsible moderation. Eating foods that are rich in protein beforehand is another way to temper the effects of alcohol.
Johnston Tools, Inc. Hardware

But perhaps the most sobering fact of all, is that you really don’t have to drink to have a great time. This holiday season, be merry but wise. Use good judgment. Don’t drink and drive.
