CHEAPER LAMINATED CALENDARS In past years, we’ve used a full-year, laminated calendar on the side of our fridge. As convenient as it was, it had two problems. First, it was hard to write small enough with the dry erase markers. Second, it kept getting more expensive (nearly $30 now!). What to do? I went searching for a calendar that I could cut up and re-tape like a quilt. Finally, I found one that I was able to trim to 8” x 8” squares and piece together on the fridge. Using colored pencils (for each person), we can still erase and make changes as needed. We have our work schedules, events and appointments at a glance, as we’ve enjoyed for years. The cost of this 15-minute, high-tech replacement? Just $1! KEEPING TRACK OF DONATIONS When I donate items, I get a donation receipt, and I write down the information in my check register (what I donated and its value). At the end of the year, when I go through the check registers and copy down who I wrote donation checks to, I also copy down the donations of items. This really helps me at tax time. Maggie

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was British author and publisher Ernest Benn who made the following observation: “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.” • If you took all the other planets in our solar system and rolled them into one big ball, that ball would fit inside the gas giant Jupiter. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. NARCONON RECOVERY TIP #6 There are three things that can interfere with recovery from drug or alcohol addiction and if they are handled can aid in permanent recovery. Mental and physical cravings, for alcohol or drugs, is the first component that can interfere with recovery. The second area that can cause problems is depression that an addict suffers due to their addicted lifestyle that is combined with the difficulty of finding enjoyment in life without drugs and alcohol. And the third area that can inhibit recovery is guilt; the guilt that results from the harmful acts that the person commits while using drugs or alcohol. If these barriers are not addressed during treatment then successful recovery is nearly impossible. But with the right treatment these things can be fully handled and the individual will no longer have things in his life that can interfere with him being able to stay off drugs permanently. Everyone working together is what makes this program special! f NOW HERE'S A TIP: By JoAnn Derson • To keep sugar from lumping, keep a few crackers in the sugar canister. They ward off moisture, and they don't affect the taste of the sugar. • "Whenever my child has a scrape, cut or even a bruise, she likes to have an adhesive bandage put on it. But when it's time for the bandage to come off, she's shy about it. I use a cotton ball to apply baby oil to the bandage, and it slips right off. This works for the waterproof kind, too." -- L.K. in Missouri • Got wrinkled ribbon? Use a curling iron to straighten it out. Slip it over the ribbon and pull through slowly. PAGE 5 MONEYSAVER SHOPPING NEWS FEBRUARY 22, 2011 essay competition or by audition. The scholarship search engines on HESC.org can help you find them. Myth: Scholarships will reduce the amount of financial aid I'll receive. You must report all scholarships, gifts or other funds you will be using for college when applying for financial aid. Receiving one or more scholarships may change the amount of needbased financial aid you receive. At the same time, receiving a scholarship is more likely to reduce your need for loans. In many cases, receiving a scholarship will not affect your total financial aid package. Scam: We guarantee to get you scholarship aid - we'll do all the work. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Keeping this old adage top-of-mind will help you determine whether to use a scholarship-finding service. Most scholarship search services match your profile to lists of available scholarships, probably from many of the same sources you can access for free on the Internet. Be aware that most scholarship sponsors do not charge up-front fees to apply for funding, and no legitimate scholarship sponsor can guarantee you will win an award. Scam: We have information you can't get anywhere else. There are no secret sources of federal or state student aid. There is simply no need to spend several hundred dollars for free information you can find yourself. Scam: We need your credit card to "hold" your scholarship. This is a red flag...do not give your credit card information over the phone or online to anyone without getting information about their service in writing first. You may be setting yourself up for an unauthorized charge or withdrawal, or worse yet, for identity theft. You can learn more about scholarship myths and scams by visiting the www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/scholarship/ index.shtml About HESC: HESC is New York State's student financial aid agency, helping people pay for college by providing more grant and scholarship award money than any other state in the nation. At HESC's core are programs like the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), numerous state scholarships, the New York Higher Education Loan Program (NYHELPs), federal college access grants and a highly successful College Savings program. HESC puts college within the reach of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers each year through programs like these, and through the guidance it provides to students, families and counselors. In 2009-10, HESC helped more than 605,000 students achieve their college dreams by providing $4.4 billion in grants, scholarships and loan guarantees, including $901 million awarded through the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to nearly 398,000 students.

You may have received offers from individuals or companies to find scholarships or complete the federal financial aid application, the FAFSA for you...for a fee. The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) urges students and families to be aware of the services you are paying for when considering fee-based student financial aid services. Much of the information provided is generally available freely on Internet search engines and at www.hesc.org. HESC is the State's student financial aid agency that helps people pay for college. Be aware of these common scholarship myths and scams: Myth: We have the secret formula for getting more federal aid. The key to receiving federal financial aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid - the FAFSA. Note

the first word in FAFSA is "free." There is no need to pay for a service to prepare the FAFSA for you. The official form is at www.fafsa.gov, which you can access through www.hesc.org. There are no secret formulas and the amount of aid you'll receive, based on your financial need and expected family contribution, is the same regardless of who completes the application. Completing the FAFSA is easier than ever before. Plus, free FAFSA help is available at many community organizations throughout the State and at StartHereGetThere.org, HESC's student financial aid awareness campaign website.

Myth: Millions of dollars in scholarship money go unclaimed. In reality, almost all scholarships are awarded. As much as 85 percent of the "unclaimed" money is employer-paid education benefits that are not awarded because of highly restrictive requirements or timing. Myth: Only "A" students get scholarships. Students with higher grades can compete for academic scholarships, but many scholarship committees look for more than grades. Some scholarship requirements may include involvement in community or extracurricular activities; others may require a particular skill or talent. Myth: You need tons of community service and extracurricular activities to get scholarships. Many scholarship winners have distinguished themselves with their dedication to only a few activities and have developed leadership skills within those programs. Highquality involvement with one or two activities trumps lowquality involvement in many. Quantity isn't everything. Myth: Only the neediest students get scholarships. While many scholarships are based on financial need or heritage, there are many other scholarships based on merit, academic interest, written

Tire Inflation Is A Key Component To A Vehicle’s Performance.
You probably don’t give much thought to those little wheels that get you from point A to point B. How much do you know about these contraptions of rubber, fabric and tread? Take the tire quiz to find out. Which component of a tire gives it the strength it needs to stay seated on the wheel rim? • cap plies • steel belts • bead bundle Bead Bundle! The bead is a loop of high-strength steel cable coated with rubber. Along with giving the tire strength to stay seated on the wheel rim, it also enables the tire to withstand the forces applied by tire mounting machines when the tires are installed on rims.

DOLLARS AND SENSE BY David Uffington Like Your Smartphone? So Do Cyber Stalkers You saved for the phone, signed up for a monthly plan and now you’re all set. You have a new smartphone that not only lets you make and receive calls, but also send and receive text messages, find your place in the world with GPS and snap photos along the way. Those photos can be sent to your e-mail address, or to friends, your online photo album or your social media page. But all isn’t as it seems. The high technology that allows you to do all those things comes at a price: your security. Any photos you take will include Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) data, which reveals exactly where and when the photo was taken. For example, if you’ve taken all the correct security steps on your social media page and think you’re safe, think again. If you take a phone picture of your child’s Little League game or your house and upload it, that location is embedded in the photo for anyone to extract. It’s called geotagging, and it can lead someone right to your door. There’s a good chance that the GPS feature in your new phone was enabled by default: In other words, it comes this way out of the box. There are ways to disable the GPS in your phone. Check your user manual. If you have any doubt whatsoever that you can do this, take the phone back to where you bought it and insist that a tech do it for you. This isn’t a time to be unsure. Additionally, if you have added apps (applications) to your phone that use GPS, you’ll have to consider those as well. Having phones give away your location in a photograph isn’t the only way your security could be compromised. If you troll the Internet on your phone and go to the wrong site, a Trojan horse could be downloaded to your phone that allows someone to read your e-mail, grab your passwords and see your browser history. On the other hand, if you only want a cell phone to make and receive calls, consider one that doesn’t require a contract, allows you to buy pay-as-you-go minutes and doesn’t incur a monthly bill. See what your local wireless phone store has to offer.

NOW HERE'S A TIP: By JoAnn Derson • To clean artificial flowers, place the arrangement flowers first into a paper bag. Add a cup of salt and gather the opening of the bag around the stems of the flowers. Twist closed and hold tightly at the stems. Shake the arrangement vigorously. The salt beats the dust off the flowers. Hold the bag upside down for a second and shake lightly to make sure all the salt granules fall off into the bag, and then remove the arrangement. • "I purchase large pieces of cheese from my bulk retailer. I keep it fresh and mold-free by wrapping it in cheesecloth that I have sprayed with plain white vinegar." -- E.C. in Indiana (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

JIM KEADY WILL SPEAK IN THE ORVIS AUDITORIUM ON THE ALFRED CAMPUS Alfred, NY, February 2011- Alfred State College will welcome Jim Keady, who will speak on sweatshops and social justice, Thursday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. in the Orvis Auditorium on the Alfred campus. This event is open to the public free of charge. Keady’s presentation, “Behind the Swoosh: Sweatshops and Social Justice,” recounts his experience of spending one month in an Indonesian slum living with Nike factory workers on $1.25 per day, a typical wage, and his decades-long effort to end sweatshop abuses. He will also show audience members what they can do to get involved and join this fight for justice. Sponsored by Alfred State’s Kaleidoscope Coalition, Keady’s appearance will feature an interactive multi-media presentation including slides, role-playing, and powerful video footage. Along with personal accounts, the presentation includes the latest information on Nike’s horrible labor and environmental practices and challenges the audience to deal in human terms with the women, men, and sometimes children, who are the foundation of global manufacturing. Keady is an educator, activist, theologian, filmmaker, writer, and athlete. He is the director of Educating for Justice, Inc., a NJ-based nonprofit company that educates and organizes citizens to promote peace and justice in the world. For the past 12 years, Keady has focused much of his time and energy on improving the living and working conditions for Nike’s overseas factory workers. His work has been featured on CBS, NBC, Fox, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, HBO Sports, ESPN, the ABC, the BBC, NPR, WBAI, as well as in the NY Times, Newsday, Sports Illustrated, the Daily News, and countless other local radio programs and print outlets. Keady’s Nike

accountability campaign, TEAM SWEAT, can be found at www.teamsweat.org and he can be reached at [email protected] Keady holds a master’s degree with distinction in theology from St. John’s University (NYC) where he concentrated his studies in social ethics and pastoral theology. Keady also coached St. John’s men’s soccer team, at the time, the NCAA Division One National Champions. He was eventually forced to resign from his job because he refused to wear and promote Nike’s products as part of the school’s $3.5 million dollar endorsement deal with the sportswear giant. Prior to his work with EFJ, Keady taught high school religion for five years at schools in New York and New Jersey. He also played and coached soccer at the youth, high school, college, and professional levels. Jim has also been involved in electoral politics and from 2005-08 served as a councilman in the City of Asbury Park, NJ. He has spent time traveling the globe and doing volunteer work in Asia and Europe with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. In addition to his graduate degree from St. John’s, he holds a bachelor of science degree in psychology from St. Joseph’s University. In 2001, the Mario Savio Foundation (CA) recognized and honored Jim’s work for justice, naming him the “Young Activist of the Year.” Jim is currently producing a feature length independent documentary film and writing a book, both titled, SWEAT, which will detail his decade-long work of advocacy on behalf of Nike’s overseas workers. “This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in corporate social responsibility, business ethics, global leadership, social justice, civic engagement, and activism,” says Ashley Kehoe, director, of Civic Engagement and Student Leadership Programs at the college. It’s that time when happy couples hear music ... but, before the bells, before the prelude to the wedding march is heard ... comes the prelude to all that will make your wedding day ideal. Look to the advertisers in this special wedding planner to find a world of ways to make your day a dream come true!

million. For wedding cakes, nothing can top the $20 million masterpiece of Nahid La Patisserie Artistique and Mimi So. The cake appeared in 2006 at the Luxury Bridal Show in Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Decked with jewels, it was not intended to be eaten. The tab for flowers for the average wedding can run in the hundreds of dollars, but the most expensive wedding bouquet cost way more, about $125,000. The red and white bouquet features 90 gemstones, nine diamonds and a star-shaped ruby and is on display on the sixth floor of the Ruby Plaza in Hano, Vietnam. Money is not always an object in wedding planning. It is hard to imagine someone spending millions of dollars on a once-in-alifetime event, but it does happen, often with celebrities and the wellto-do. Sometimes the marriage works, and sometimes it doesn’t, begging the question if over-the-top weddings are worth it.

or other related theme. Flavor options include Grandma’s favorite sugar cookie recipe, gingerbread, brownies, pumpkin, sour cream-any rollout recipe that lends itself to cookie cutters. The decorated cookies can then be personalized with the couple’s names, initials or wedding date. The unique confections can be displayed on a central table, serve as centerpieces on guests’ tables or placed at each place setting. Rather than serving cake slices, some couples opt for a tiered display of doughnuts or cupcakes. In addition to the unique presentation, one advantage to serving cupcakes or doughnuts is the variety available for individual preferences. Serving dessert is also easier since guests can help themselves to their favorite treat. A dessert table is another popular option for the wedding meal. The couple can offer their favorite selections of cheesecake, fluff, mousse, trifle, pudding and other sweets. Displayed on varied levels of pedestal plates, the desserts create an unexpected, attractive presentation. Covering the table with coordinating fabric and interspersing small bowls of mints, candies and nuts complete the festive look. Having a small cake on each table allows guests to serve themselves. These cakes, which can double as centerpieces, can be simply decorated eightinch layer cakes or they can be thematically decorated-purses, hearts, ships, dresses, baseballs, etc.-to reflect the couple’s unique interests. The originality of the creations will be a topic of conversation long after the wedding day. Not to be tossed aside, however, is the traditional tiered cake. Flavors, fillings, textures, frosting and design all work together to present a culinary delight. No longer do guests anticipate a white cake with white butter cream frosting at a wedding. Bakeries offer such a wide range of options that no wedding cake should ever be predictable. Brides and grooms have the opportunity to add a distinctive touch to their wedding day celebration. Not only will guests remember what the bride wore, but they will undoubtedly remember how personal and unique the reception was-especially the dessert.

$20,000 to $30,000. For many folks, the figure is staggering. For others, it is a mere pittance. There have been many weddings costing in the millions of dollars throughout history, but the most expensive to date belongs to that of Vanish Mittal and Amit Bhatia. The six-day affair was held in France in 2004 and cost $55 to $60 million. Mittal’s father, the Indian Steel Maharajah, picked up the tab for the affair, which included performances by Sha Rukh Khan and Kylie Minogue. Next to a multimillion-dollar wedding, a $12 million wedding dress might seem like nothing. The Diamond Wedding Gown from Renee Strausse and Martin Katz Jewellers featured 150 carats of diamonds and was the most expensive in the world. It was shown at the Luxury Brands Lifestyle Bridal Show in 2006, while the secondmost expensive wedding dress was shown at Dubai’s Fashion & Diamonds Show. Designed by Yumi Katsura, the gown featured a thousand pearls and one of only two five-carat white gold diamonds in the world. It was valued at $8.5

By Tresa Erickson After all of the showers, parties and wedding festivities, many couples have had enough and are ready to get on with the private celebration of their union at their honeymoon. You may feel like this is where you will be and scoff at your mother’s suggestion for a postwedding brunch before you dash off on your honeymoon. Before you put the kibosh on the idea, consider the following. A post-wedding brunch offers the bride and groom many opportunities. It gives them the chance to connect with guests they missed out on the day before and catch up on all of the details of the event, like little Jimmy

Continue The Celebration

breaking hearts on the dance floor. It also gives them the chance to personally thank all of those who assisted with the wedding preparations and those who took time off to travel to the wedding. A post-wedding brunch also offers benefits for attendees. It gives someone like Aunt Gladys who may have wanted to be a part of the wedding festivities the opportunity to do so and provides out-of-town guests with a good breakfast before they set off for home. It also provides guests with another opportunity to connect and catch up with each other. While some couples choose to end the public celebration of their union with their wedding reception, others choose to continue the celebration the next

morning with a postwedding brunch. Should you decide to go this route, keep it simple. The wedding is over. There is no need for you to get all gussied up and put on an elaborate affair. Most guests will be leaving for home right afterwards. Restrict invites to out-oftown guests and close family and friends and select a time for the brunch between 8 and 10 o’clock. This will give guests plenty of time to sleep in. Finally, serve a wide range of breakfast foods to suit all tastes. A post-wedding brunch can be a fun way to unwind before you take off on your honeymoon. Give the idea some thought, and if time and budget permit, go for it!

By Tresa Erickson You just got engaged, and already your mind is whirling with ideas for your wedding. Along with setting a date and choosing a venue, you will have to select wedding attendants. As the bride, you will probably want to start the process with your maid or matron of honor. For some brides, selecting a maid of honor is a no-brainer. There is no one more suited for the job than their one and only sister or their best friend since kindergarten. For others,

the decision is much more difficult. They have several sisters and close friends, plus a ton of cousins. In that case, the best course of action is to select a person who can fulfill all of the obligations of the job. Traditionally, maids of honor have a variety of responsibilities. Some of these may include: • Assisting the bride with much of the wedding planning, including choosing a reception venue, decorations and flowers • Helping the bride shop for a wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses • Addressing the wedding invitations • Making or assembling the wedding favors • Hosting the bridal shower and bachelorette party • Attending the rehearsal and helping out at the rehearsal dinner • Decorating and cleaning up the reception site • Receiving the flowers and handing out all of the bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres • Helping the bride and bridesmaids get dressed and making sure they get where they need to be at the appropriate time • Holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony • Witnessing the marriage license • Standing in the receiving line • Taking part in the wedding photos • Toasting the couple at the reception • Dancing with the best man and other guests Depending upon your wishes, the maid of honor may have more or fewer duties to perform. Sit down and decide exactly what you would like your maid of honor to do. Make a list of their duties and a list of potential candidates for the job. Then start comparing the lists. Be honest in your assessment of each candidate on your list. You need a person who not only will be willing to carry out the duties you assign but do them on time. You may love your little sister, but if she is a procrastinator, she may not be the best candidate for the job. Your older sister, on the other hand, might make a better choice because she is so timely. Consider each candidate’s personal situation as well. What kind of

commitments does she already have? If your older sister is a wife and mother, works full time and heads several committees, she may be too busy to serve as your matron of honor. If she is pregnant, she may be too tired and sick to perform the duties required. If she is going through a difficult divorce, she may not have the energy to devote to you and your wedding. Choose someone who doesn’t have as much on her plate to be your maid of honor. If you plan to lean heavily on your maid of honor, make sure you choose someone who lives close enough to you to get the job done. If you live in the Midwest, don’t choose a cousin who lives on the coast to be your maid of honor. It will be hard for her to serve as the center of support from so far away. Choose that dependable friend who lives just down the street. Choosing a maid of honor takes time. Don’t rush the process, and once you have a found someone and she has agreed to serve as your maid of honor, make sure you communicate your wishes to her. If you want her to take an active role in the wedding planning, say so. If you would prefer she sit on the sidelines until the actual wedding day, let her know that. Give her a list of all of the tasks she will be responsible for and check in with her often to see how things are going.

By Tresa Erickson You’re getting married again, but this time, it is for keeps. You have found

The Second Time Around

your soul mate, and the two of you want to express your love for each other and exchange vows in front of everyone you know. You’re definitely going to have a wedding, and as the bride, one of the first questions you have is what type of dress and accessories to wear. This is your second wedding, after all. You’re not supposed to wear white, right? Wrong! The notion that women getting married again should not wear white is passé. A symbol of joy and commitment, white makes an excellent choice for a wedding dress color the second, third or subsequent time around. Off-white, ivory and pastels are also popular. Brides can even disband with light colors altogether and go for bolder, deeper colors, like burgundy, dark green or red. The dress chosen should reflect the time, size and tone of the wedding, as well as the bride’s personality, lifestyle and fashion sense. It should also flatter her body type, playing up her strengths and downplaying her weaknesses. As for accessories, brides getting married again may go with almost anything but a blusher. Experts advise against this and suggest brides that want to wear a veil let it trail down their back. For those who choose not to wear a veil, hats, hair ornaments and fresh flowers make excellent substitutes. When it comes to the dress and accessories for your second wedding, you practically have free reign. You can go with the traditional or spread your wings and try something new. You may wear a gorgeous beaded white dress with a long train or a short red dress with spaghetti straps. It is entirely up to you. Just make sure you look stunning!

All visitors welcome! tffb VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves Fiduciaries: The Big Money Grab or Fiduciary Abuse A Texas couple, one of them an attorney, was indicted last summer for stealing more than $2 million from veterans they were sworn to protect. They’d been declared fiduciaries and legal guardians for veterans who’d been deemed incompetent to handle their own

affairs. According to the 26-count indictment, this couple had been at it since 2003. But what of veterans who are declared incompetent without any due process whatsoever? The Department of Veterans Affairs took a married couple who didn’t need money-managing help, said the veteran was 100 percent disabled with PTSD and declared him incompetent and in need of a fiduciary representative. With the stroke of a pen, this couple is no longer capable of making decisions about their money? In another case, a son (with a power of attorney) had been handling his veteran father’s money for many years. Suddenly, a doctor said the veteran was incompetent and the VA assigned an attorney to manage his money. The attorney grabbed the money in the account and put it into another one, which the son has no access

to. All this without a hearing, without input from family and without the knowledge of the veteran. The abuses go on and on, they include: --Veterans forced to accept a fiduciary situation they didn’t ask for, don’t want and weren’t told about in advance. --Veterans who have their utilities cut off because the fiduciary hasn’t paid the bills on time. --Spouse fiduciaries who have been sued because the VA has appointed two fiduciaries, and the other one wants the money. The Veterans Administration Office of the Inspector General (VAOIG) is great at nabbing those who steal from veterans, but what about the VA itself forcing veterans into fiduciary relationships against their will? When will it look at that?

ELIMINATING MILDEW SMELLS There is a difference between removing mildew odors and cleaning an item. If the item has been washed and still has a mildew odor, then it is not exactly dirty. I was given some almost brand new coats that my friend had washed. She had them hanging at the top of her basement stairs. The basement smelled of mildew, and when I brought the coats home, I placed them in my basement to sort through the next day and found my basement smelled like mildew. I poured straight vinegar in a bowl. Then I took a thin hand towel, dipped it in the vinegar, wrung it out lightly, and swung the towel in the air throughout the basement. I repeated the process many times, and at the end, I left the remainder of the vinegar in the bowl with the hand towel to evaporate in the next couple days. The following day there was no mildew smell in my basement! The coats smelled normal again, too. M.E.

Reader Advisory: the National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the above classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer “employment” but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. Taking Control Of Debt: Practical Tips
by John Addison (NAPSA)-Whether it’s a matter of convenience or instant gratification or just keeping up with the neighbors, it’s easy to find yourself in debt, buying things you don’t really need. The really bad news is that an item purchased in a second on credit can often take years to pay off. The Real Cost Of Debt Consider the following: If you have a $3,000 balance at 19.8 percent interest and you pay the minimum of 3.5 percent of the balance, or $20.00 - whichever is greater -and you make no new purchases, it will take more than 10 years to pay off the loan. Plus, you will end up paying more than $2,300 in interest charges. When Compound Interest Works Against You While compound interest can be a powerful tool, working for you when saving, it can also work against you when applied to a debt. When you pay just the minimum balance on a credit card, for instance, each month, your new balance is the principal plus the interest and that amount gets compounded over and over again. Tips On Managing Debt • Use the right card Credit cards are a fact of life. The key is to use the kind that you pay off each month. That can help keep you out of unmanageable debt. And don’t use it on a whim, only when you must. • Do you really want to co-sign?-Co-signing a loan for someone is a big responsibility. Take a deep breath and think twice before you do it. If the other person defaults on the loan, you are responsible for repayment. Failure to pay can hurt or ruin your credit. Also, cosigning a loan will count

against your debt ratio and could cause you to be refused an auto or home loan. • Let your lender know when things change-If your marital status changes or any other situation in which you have a joint account changes, contact your lender immediately. Any joint accounts that you signed off on are usually still yours. • Know what you are agreeing to - Before you sign a credit card application, make sure you know what the “cost of the credit” really is. It’s usually best to go with the card with the lowest annual fee and the lowest interest rate. John Addison is co-CEO of Primerica. For more information, visit www.primerica.com.

Uncle Sam Wants You To Save For Retirement
(NAPSA)-If you ever feel your finances are too stretched to save for retirement, there could be good news for you. The Saver’s Credit-a little-known tax credit made available by the IRS to low- to middleincome workers-could make saving for retirement more affordable than you think. It may reduce your federal income taxes when you save for retirement through a qualified retirement plan or an individual retirement account (IRA). “The Saver’s Credit is particularly great because it offers many workers an added incentive to save for their future retirement, while potentially lowering their tax bill today,” said Catherine Collinson, president of the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies®. Here’s how it works: #1. Check Your Eligibility For singles, anyone earning up to $27,750 in 2010 or $28,250 in 2011 is eligible. For the head of a household, the income limit

is $41,625 in 2010 and $42,375 in 2011. For those who are married and file a joint return, the income limit is $55,500 in 2010 or $56,500 in 2011. You must be 18 years or older by January 1 and cannot be a full-time student or be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return. If you fit within these parameters, the Saver’s Credit may be for you. Depending on your filing status and income level, you may qualify for a nonrefundable credit of up to $1,000 (or $2,000 if filing jointly) on your federal income taxes for that year when you contribute to a 401(k), 403(b), 457, 501(c)(18)(D), SEP or SIMPLE plan, or an IRA. #2. Save for Retirement If your employer offers a retirement plan, make sure you enroll. Or open a traditional or Roth IRA with the financial institution of your choice. If you are enrolled in your employer’s retirement plan, you may already qualify for the credit. In general, for every dollar you contribute to a qualified retirement plan or IRA, up to the lesser of the limits permitted by an employer-sponsored plan or the IRS, you defer that amount from your current overall taxable income on your federal tax returns. #3. File Your Tax Return and Claim the Credit When you prepare your federal tax returns, you then claim your Saver’s Credit by subtracting this tax credit from your federal income taxes owed. If you use a professional tax preparer, ask about the Saver’s Credit, called the “Retirement Savings Contributions Credit” on Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040NR. Or, if you use tax preparation software, be sure to use Form 1040, Form 1040A or Form 1040NR to file your return. The Saver’s Credit is not available with Form 1040EZ, although the IRS has included instructions with the EZ form directing you to a different form if you choose to claim the credit. Lastly, if you prepare your tax returns by hand, start with Form 8880, “Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions,” to determine your credit rate and corresponding credit amount. Then use Form 1040 or Form 1040A to file your return. Transfer the amount of the Saver’s Credit from Form 8880 to line 50 of Form 1040, line 32 of Form 1040A or line 47 of Form 1040NR. Have questions? See IRS publication 590, ask a tax professional or log on to the IRS website at www.irs.gov. The 11th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey found that only 12 percent of full-time American workers with an annual household income of less than $50,000 are aware that the credit exists. Don’t overlook Uncle Sam’s Saver’s Credit. It may help you pay less in your current federal income taxes while

saving for retirement. For more details on the Saver’s Credit and online retirement planning calculators, visit the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies(r) at www.trans america-center.org. The Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® is a nonprofit corporation.

Experience For Less
By Tresa Erickson Most parents dread the thought of their teenagers driving. They look forward to their teens becoming more independent, but they hate the big bucks they’re going to have to shell out to insure their teens. Insurance companies generally don’t view drivers as experienced until they turn age 25. Only then do insurance premiums start dropping. In the meantime, you have to insure your teen so they can get experience driving. Here are some tips for keeping costs low. Steer clear of expensive cars. Sure, every teen dreams of owning a flashy, new car, but that can spell big bucks in the insurance realm. The newer the car and the more horsepower it has, the higher the insurance premiums will be. Get your teen a decent used car, preferably one that is heavier and safer to drive, and save on insurance costs. Pay for the car in full, and you may be able to save even more by carrying liability insurance only. Shop around for the lowest rates possible. Insurance companies compete, and you may be able to find a really good deal. Don’t skimp so much, however, that you lose out on good service. You need an agent who will work with you to get you the best rates and will be there for you when you need them. Consider adding your teen to your car insurance

Telephone Assistance
Taxpayers may also order current and prior year tax forms, instructions and publications by calling 1-800TAX-FORM (1-800-8293676). Taxpayers may ask tax questions by calling the toll-free customer service line at 1-800-829-1040 for individual tax issues or 1800-829-4933 for businessrelated tax issues. TTY/TDD users may call 1-800-8294059 to ask tax questions or to order forms and publications. Taxpayers can also listen to information with little or no waiting by calling TeleTax toll-free at 1-800-829-4477 to hear pre-recorded messages in English or Spanish covering various tax topics or to check on the status of a refund.

policy or going with a higher deductible. Yes, you will have to pay more for the addition to your policy, but probably not as much as you would for a new policy for your teen driver. If you would rather your teen have their own car insurance policy, keep costs low with a higher deductible. Yes, you will have to pay out of pocket for minor repairs, but the savings in premiums may make up for it. Get all of the discounts you can. Tell your agent about all of the safety features on your teen’s car. Many insurance companies offer discounts for car alarm systems, airbags, gear locks and the like. Tell your agent about any driver’s training your teen has received. Many insurance companies offer discounts for driver’s training. Tell your agent about your teen’s good grades. Many insurance companies offer discounts to teens with good grades on the basis that they will be more responsible drivers. Finally, emphasize the importance in driving safely to your teen. The more careful they are, the less likely they will have an accident and their insurance rates will increase. The same goes for violations. Encourage your teen to observe the speed limit and the rules of the road. The fewer tickets they get, the less likely their insurance rates will increase. These are just some of the ways you can keep insurance costs low for your teen driver. There may be others. Speak to your insurance agent
