Smethport, Pa. Call 814-887-5400. 4/6p HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo HOLLYWOOD -- Doris Day is back. The tabloids couldn’t wait to scream headlines that “Doris Day is broke!” and “Doris Day makes a comeback at 86 because she has to!” Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is, Doris was approached by Sony to allow it to release tracks she recorded back in 1985. At first she declined, but when she heard the totally re-mastered tracks, she reconsidered. She decided to move forward with the project as a tribute to her late son, Terry Melcher, who died in 2004 from cancer. The Beach Boys’ Bruce Johnston worked with Terry on producing the tracks, which include “Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries,” “You Are So Beautiful,” “Disney Girls” and “I’ll See You In My Dreams.” Doris is still among the all-time top-10-grossing actresses in film and was Oscar-nominated for “Pillow Talk” (1959), in which she starred with her friend Rock Hudson. Doris often has been mentioned for an honorary Oscar, but has refused to agree to accept the award on the show. Now that she’s posed for photos to accompany the new album, called “My Heart,” maybe it will lead to recording a new album and appearing in public again. She currently lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif. *** Jennifer Aniston will direct and star in “The Goree Girls,” a musical drama set in the early 1940s. Based on a true story, it’s about a group of Texas women who form a country-western band in prison. The cast includes Jennifer Landon (Michael Landon’s daughter), former Destiny’s Child member and two-time Grammy winner Kelly Rowland, Pam Tillis (daughter of country legend Mel Tillis) and “Grey’s Anatomy” stars Ellen Pompeo and Sandra O. Aniston will unveil her singing pipes in the film. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. MT. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel *** • On Sept. 27, 1854, two ships collide off the coast of Newfoundland, killing 322 passengers and crew. The wooden-hulled Arctic was severely damaged when it slammed into the iron-hulled steamer Vesta. In trying to beach the ship, the Arctic’s captain ran over several lifeboats, causing even more people to drown. *** • On Oct. 1, 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, home of such natural wonders as the 2,425-foot-high Yosemite Falls, rock formations Half Dome and El Capitan, and three groves of giant sequoias, the world’s biggest trees. *** • On Sept. 28, 1938, auto inventor Charles Duryea dies in Philadelphia at the age of 76. Duryea and his brother Frank designed and built one of the first functioning gas-powered automobiles. Charles insisted on taking full credit for the brothers’ innovation and said that Frank was “simply a mechanic.” *** • On Sept. 26, 1957, “West Side Story,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. “West Side Story,” a reinterpretation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, tells the tale of a love affair between Tony, who is Polish American, and Maria, a Puerto Rican, set against an urban background of interracial warfare. *** • On Sept. 29, 1969, the U.S. Army drops murder charges against eight Special Forces soldiers accused of killing a Vietnamese national. The case against the Green Berets was dismissed for reasons of national security when the CIA refused to release highly classified information. *** • On Oct. 2, 1985, Rock Hudson, a Hollywood romantic leading man during the 1950s and ‘60s and later a TV star, dies at the age of 59 from an AIDS-related illness. The 6-foot-5 Hudson rose to fame starring in such films as “Giant” (1956), for which he received an Academy Award nomination. *** • On Sept. 30, 1999, large doses of radiation are released at Japan’s Tokaimura nuclear plant, an accident caused by a serious error made by workers at the plant. Instead of pouring 5 pounds of powdered uranium into nitric acid, workers poured in 35 pounds. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAGE 5 Quite simply, warehouse pricing saves you time and money . Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Browns! With the power of the internet, today’s car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize what’s a good deal and what’s not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot, we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, that’s where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value . We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelley Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelley Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Don’t wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days. MONEYSAVER SHOPPING NEWS SEPTEMBER 13, 2011

Eldred, Pa. eowc HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo HOLLYWOOD -- Can you believe a remake of the classic 1964 Audrey Hepburn/Rex Harrison film “My Fair Lady”? Originally, Keira Knightly was to star, but she’s out in favor of the new “it girl,” Carey Mulligan. The screenplay, by Oscar-winning “Sense and Sensibility” screenwriter Emma Thompson, is an update that will reveal more of Eliza Doolittle’s past. Why Carey Mulligan as Eliza? She was Oscar nominated for “An Education” (2009), has “Drive” with Ryan Gosling making the film-fest rounds, and just completed “Shame” with Michael Fassbender. Mulligan is now shooting “The Great Gatsby,” in 3D, in Sydney, Australia. She plays Daisy Buchanan to Leonardo Di Caprio”s Jay Gatsby (in 1974 it was Mia Farrow and Robert Redford). Directed by “Moulin Rouge’s” Baz Luhrmann, the film also stars Tobey Maguire. “My Fair Lady” won eight Oscars, including best actor and best picture. Why remake it? If the new version doesn’t measure up, will they rename it “My Spare Lady.” Send letters to Tony Rizzo’s Hollywood, 8306 Wilshire Blvd., No. 362, Beverly Hills, CA 90211. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • “I love to have sauteed, sliced mushrooms, and I use my egg slicer to get perfect slices. It’s very handy and much easier to use than doing it with a knife.” -- K.P. in Arizona *** • You can use a soft cloth dampened with vinegar to clean greasy stains off of suede shoes. This also works on patent leather. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “Signing Their Rights Away: The Fame and Misfortune of the Men Who Signed the United States Constitution” by Denise Kiernan and Joseph D’Agnese • Reviewed by Larry Cox In their previous book, award-winning writers Denise Kiernan and Joseph D’Agnese documented the fate of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Their latest book fast-forwards to the summer of 1787, as 39 cranky, mistrustful men meet -- once again in Philadelphia -- to ratify the United States Constitution. Agreeing on a new constitution was anything but a slam dunk. It was a turbulent time. The United States found itself on the verge of political collapse. American citizens faced runaway inflation and even the foreclosures of their homes and businesses. It was a turning point in the history of this country, and almost everyone realized that the only solution was a governing framework with enough power to truly work. To accomplish this, the delegates had to put aside their differences and compromise, but that was easier said than done, especially considering how different many of them were. For example, David Brearley of New Jersey wanted to erase state boundaries and start over, Henry Williamson of North Carolina believed in aliens, Governor Morris of New York was a playboy who didn’t let his peg leg get in the way of making a play for Dolly Madison, and John Rutledge of South Carolina was so unstable he attempted suicide twice. Added to the mix was Rufus King, the original Ralph Nader, a perennial candidate who ran for president and vice president every chance he got, losing every time, and Robert Morris of Philadelphia, who despite helping to finance the American Revolution, ended up in debtor’s prison and died penniless. How they found common ground to ratify the U.S. Constitution, the world’s oldest living Constitution, is a fascinating story documented by two gifted historians. Kiernan and D’Agnese make both this period and the men who pulled off this incredible achievement exciting and entertaining.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver • If you’re an arachnophobe, you may not want to read the following tidbit: There are some species of spider that dine on fish -- and catch them, too. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Are you serious all the time? Do you take your work seriously? I hope you do. I hope you love what you do and do what you love as you Work Positive. I hope your work bursts forth from your passion, something you care deeply about in life. I hope your work is important. And for these reasons and a thousand more, I hope you take your work seriously. Now let me ask you another question–Do you take yourself seriously? I hope not. I hope you realize that you can’t be right all the time...and that you don’t have to be. I hope you see yourself for who you are–a unique, one-of-akind, special-gifted individual who’s one in 6.5 billion who lives on a planet full of others created the same way. I hope you give yourself peace so you can Live Positive in your own skin. I hope you laugh at yourself as often as possible, because if you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? Today as you Work Positive, take your work seriously, but as you Live Positive, please don’t take yourself so seriously. Enjoy making a positive life! DOLLARS AND SENSE by David Uffington INSURANCE INVENTORY The best time to do an insurance inventory is before trouble strikes, and the best place to store your inventory list is somewhere other than your home. Should you have a claim, photos and written documentation are your best evidence of property you own. PHOTOS: If you have a digital camera, your task will be made easier if you buy an additional memory card. Take all your photos with that memory card in the camera, and then store the card in a bank box or another safe place. If you have a film camera, you’ll need to print out your photos and store those. There are two steps to taking insurance photos: what easily can be seen, and what’s hidden. Stand in the middle of each room and take photos in a circle around you. That’s the easy part. The next step involves opening closet doors and drawers and taking pictures of the contents. Your best bet is to have the camera set on the largest photo it will take, often larger than 3000 by 2000 pixels. The reason is that you’ll be able to take photos of the back of electronics, such as televisions and stereos, or the bottom of collectibles such as china, and have the model and serial numbers available when you blow up the photo. Don’t forget to inventory the contents of your garage or attic, as well as any sheds on your property. Photograph the exterior of your home and your vehicles. Another method is to use a video camera, but be sure your aim is steady. Still photos are preferable, as studying each one will allow you to clearly see which items you also need to add to your paper inventory list. PAPER: Print out online (or get from your insurance agent) an inventory form to jog your memory about what you own and need to document. List each item. Receipts are likely stored with your warranty information, but you’ll need them for any claims of loss. Receipts will show the date of purchase as well as the cost. Keep everything in a bank box or another safe location: A copy of the memory card with your inventory photos (or the photos themselves), copy of insurance policies and your paper inventories.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American humorist Evan Esar who made the following extremely sage observation: “Anger is the feeling that makes your mouth work faster than your mind.” • The Ghirardelli company, now renowned worldwide for the fine chocolate it produces, originally was a purveyor of mustard and spices. • Frank Lloyd Wright was an unusually prolific architect. During the 70 years of his professional career, he designed a whopping 500 buildings. • You might be surprised to learn that author Norman Mailer, best known for his novel “The Naked and the Dead,” majored in aeronautical engineering when he was in college.

• In 1826, the eastern part of Texas declared its independence from the United States, calling itself the Republic of Fredonia.

NASCAR THIS WEEK - By Monte Dutton STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver • Thomas Jefferson was an inventor as well as a statesman, but he refused to take out patents on any of his ideas. He believed that inventions should benefit all of humanity, not just himself. • According to those who study such things, the average American believes the ideal age -- that is, the best year of his or her life -- is 32. And when 30-somethings are asked when old age begins, the majority of men say it's in the late 60s, while more women believe old age begins in the 70s. • That iconic symbol of the Old West, the Pony Express, was based on the mail system used throughout the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. However, the Mongol riders often covered 125 miles in a single day, which was faster than the best record held by a Pony Express rider. • In Nazi Germany, it was illegal to name a horse "Adolph." Jeff Gordon celebrates with a burnout in his No. 24 Chevrolet after winning the Sprint Cup Series AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sept. 6. (Getty Images photo) Gordon Gets One Back It's so easy to get all misty-eyed. Jeff Gordon outdueled Jimmie Johnson -- his teammate, friend, protege and nemesis -- to win the rain-delayed AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Since Johnson first roared into the NASCAR spotlight in 2002, the two have competed together in 352 Sprint Cup races. Johnson has won twice as many (54-27) and finished ahead of Gordon in 55.1 percent. Johnson has won five straight championships, and Gordon hasn't won any. His four all were before Johnson arrived. When Johnson arrived, everything changed for Gordon. It's so tempting to proclaim, while awash in sentimentality, that happy days are here again. They may be, but it's been 10 years since Gordon's fourth championship, and the Chase hasn't even started. He doesn't have Johnson on the ropes, and others have just as much a stake in dethroning the perennial champion. No one has Johnson on the ropes. He's finished in the top 10 in five straight races, fourth or better in four of them and second in two of the last three. Oh, by the way, he's the points leader. All of that having been noted, the Tuesday race, run at shortly after 11 a.m., with millions of fans at work and nestled in neither recliners nor grandstand seats, was a great memory for those who'll have one. In NASCAR, seldom has so much been witnessed by so few. Gordon had that Jimmie Johnson Sinking Feeling and somehow managed to shake the fever. A winner of 85 races has been in a lot of parades, few of them on Tuesdays, and it appeared as if Johnson was going to rain on it. But Gordon held on, against all expectations, and it was a grand and righteous spectacle. "Not too many people get to do that these days, and I didn't think I was going to be able to do it, either," said Gordon, and the "that" translated to "beating Jimmie Johnson." Meanwhile, Johnson's hands were reportedly trembling when he climbed out of his car. "Man, that is what racing is all about," he exclaimed "That was a lot of fun." Gordon held on by his wits, for dear life, with all he had and by the hair of his chinny-chin-chin. If he holds off Johnson for 11 more weeks, it'll be magic. If Johnson wins again, it'll be expected. *** Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. Email Monte at [email protected]. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

As oil, gas and mineral rights holder, a group’s concerns can be addressed and dealt with greater bargaining strength than an individual’s wishes in a lease agreement. Compare the process to the negotiations a milk co-op, a buying club, or a timber consortium goes through. It’s all done because if it’s not the little guy gets caught in the squeeze...sometimes without even knowing it until it’s too late...especially true when leasing. Rights holders across the state lines listed above have established numerous production units (640 AC) as members of the 4-County Leasing Group. These parcels have been put together by large and small acreages from 2 acres to those holding 1,000’s. Purposely avoiding industry-friendly leases

written by company lawyers and often peddled by the friendliest landmen one can ever hope to meet, the 4-county group has used professionals to develop, market and negotiate its own lease. It is the people who live here, who enjoy everything this region has to offer, that can best determine what clauses will protect their interests. It is the professionals representing us that provide the legal terminology needed to ensure a solid lease. Recent national news highlighted the fact that Marcellus recoverable gas has been underestimated by 4,100%. It’s also known the Utica shale (another gas-bearing layer below the Marcellus) is up to 400’ thick in our region...much thicker than the Marcellus. In some locations both Utica and Marcellus recoverable shales are being tapped on the same wellpad. With this mother-lode of recoverable gas it’s clear why over two dozen foreign countries have invested in this gas play. County Leasing Group. Rights holders wanting to learn more about their leasing options within a group setting can mark September 15th and 29th on their calendars. Co-exprise Energy Inc., Wexford, Pa (the company working for 4-County members) will be giving a presentation at the Fire Hall, 121 S. Puritan Ave., Shinglehouse, PA. This is a company that does not get paid unless the clients get paid. Clients are not required to sign a lease document that does not meet the criteria set forth. Personal, public and commercial decisions regarding leasing rights acreage will have far-reaching effects on this region. They bring the promise of jobs in all fields related to supplies and services for personnel involved...this as well as additional personal income. Mini Eggplant Pizzas the Italian Way One of the joys of raising kids is making new friends with others who also are raising kids. When my three were preschoolers, I regularly met up with neighborhood moms at the bus stop in the morning or for ballgames at the park and story time at the library. As the kids grew, so did the friendships. Six of us still make a point of getting together throughout the seasons to celebrate our birthdays. One recent gathering was particularly memorable. Instead of meeting at a restaurant, we donned aprons in one of our kitchens and huddled around the center island for a cooking lesson taught by neighbor Cristina Garrasi Mazzei, an energetic mom from Italy. "To an American eye, Italy might seem the same, with pasta and pizza wherever you go," she began. "But for food lovers, it's a country waiting to be discovered! Each region has its unique flavors and cooking techniques. For example, the taste of a simple ricotta cheese can vary from place to place," she said. As she shared her passion for Italian food, she emphasized that using fresh, seasonal ingredients is key to tasty meals. That's when she showed us how to transform eggplant into a light side dish called Pizzette di melanzane, common in the Compania region, where she is from. Like a pizza minus the crust, these mini eggplant pizzas are tasty and versatile. Now that eggplants are plentiful in our markets, find Italy and the Compania region on a map in your home, and have fun preparing this easy and authentic Italian recipe with your kids.

• To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. The foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. • “I recently did a little work on my car, and afterward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage.” -- A Reader, via email • Add a fabric-softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. While you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. You also can use a cotton ball scented with your favorite essential oil or even perfume. • If you have trouble threading needles, try spritzing some hairspray on your finger, and twist the end of the thread. It will keep the fibers together and stiffen it enough to be easily threaded. • It's still possible to save a bit of money on car maintenance if you can’t change your own oil. Learn common add-ons that you will be offered at oil-and-lube places. Air filters are surprisingly easy to replace on your own, and so are windshield wipers. Very often, the staff of auto-supply chains will lend you tools or even assist you right in the parking lot. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

MINI EGGPLANT PIZZAS (PIZZETTE DE MELANZANE) 1 large eggplant, about 1 pound 3/4 cup tomato puree 4 cloves fresh garlic, chopped Salt to taste Dried oregano, to taste 1 cup coarsely shredded mozzarella cheese, or a 4-ounce bag Parmigiano Reggiano (optional) 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. 2. An adult should cut the eggplant into 1/2-inch-thick rounds. Arrange them on a lightly oiled baking sheet. 3. Like constructing mini pizzas, let kids spoon the tomato puree over each round. Scatter the garlic and oregano, sprinkle salt to taste and top with mozzarella. Add Parmigiano Reggiano, if you wish. 4. Bake rounds in the oven for 25 minutes or until mozzarella has melted completely and bubbles. 5. Serve immediately as a light side dish with a summer pasta salad and other fresh vegetables. Makes 8-10 mini pizzas. As an alternative, Cristina suggests serving the mini pizzas cold in a sandwich. Note: If your child is like her young daughter, omit the garlic until he or she develops a taste for it. (c) 2011 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.

HOLLYWOOD -- Went to Zsa Zsa Gabor and Prince Frederick Anhalt's 25th anniversary party in their Bel-Air home. Phyllis Diller, 94, and "Batman's" Cat Woman, Julie Newmar, 78, were the first to arrive. Robert Blake sat at the piano, and sang and danced. Quincy Jones, producer of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "Mad TV," as well as Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video and album, sat with me poolside. He's such a nice man, and he didn't refuse any of the 50 people who wanted photos taken with him. Judge Charles Rubin, who Zsa Zsa only received in her presided over her cop-slapping bedroom, though none of the trial 22 years ago, revisits Zsa Zsa above saw her. However, Judge Gabor at her 25th wedding Charles Rubin, who sentenced her anniversary celebration. to community service 22 years ago for slapping a cop, was shown into her boudoir ... go figure! Connie still does her club act and has several successful businesses, including the beauty product "Forever Young." Ann-Margret, 70, did "Bye, Bye Birdie" and "Viva Las Vegas" with Elvis. Sixteen films later she was Oscar-nominated for "Carnal Knowledge" with Jack Nicholson and won praise for The Who's "Tommy." She was in the film "Lucky" with Colin Hanks out last month. REMEMBER WHEN?

FLASHBACK By Mick Harper 1. How did the Bay City Rollers get their start in the U.S.? 2. How many times did the Rolling Stones appear on the “Ed Sullivan Show”? 3. Who released “Dance to the Music” in 1968? 4. Which band had its only No. 1 hit with “Sweet Child o’ Mine”? 5. What group released “Sylvia’s Mother,” and when? 6. Who wrote “Baby, What a Big Surprise” in 1977? Answers 1. They appeared via satellite for the launch of ABC’s “Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell” in 1975. Their song “Saturday Night” went to No. 1 months later. 2. Six times. The Stones’ riotous crowds and questionable lyrics often caused problems for Sullivan. 3. Sly & the Family Stone. The song reached No. 8 and made Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. 4. Guns N’ Roses, in 1987 In a recent BBC poll, the song was voted to have the “greatest guitar riff ever.” 5. Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, in 1972. It’s said that Shel Silverstein wrote the song about a real Sylvia who ended their relationship to marry another. 6. Peter Cetera of the group Chicago wrote and sang lead vocals on the song, backed up by Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel ? On Sept. 24, 1890, faced with the eminent destruction of their church and way of life, Mormon leaders reluctantly issue the “Mormon Manifesto” in which they command all Latter-day Saints to uphold the laws of the nation and abandon polygamy.

NOTICE
As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

It is flow blue in the Pelew pattern and is marked as British made. What makes it extraordinary is its shape. It is a long decagon shape. -- Beth, Sun City, Ariz. A: Your teapot was probably made in East Challinor, England, in about 1840, and is quite desirable. I spoke to several collectors who seem to agree that in good to mint condition, it might be worth as much as $1,500. Be aware, however, that today’s soft economy has depressed many values in the collectible marketplace, including vintage pieces of flow blue.
